Chicago police work the scene where a 14-year-old boy was shot and killed in the 2200 block of W. Adams St. on the Near West Side, Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2021. | Tyler LaRiviere/Sun-TimesTyler LaRiviere/Sun-Times

Three people people were killed — including two 14-year-old boys — and 11 other people were wounded by gunfire in Chicago Wednesday.

One of the boys, Javion Ivy, was outside in the 2200 block of West Adams Street when someone shot him in the abdomen, police said. He was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital.
The other boy was standing on the sidewalk in the 1400 block of South 73rd Street in Englewood when someone in a passing dark-colored car opened fire, police said. He was struck in the head and transported to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he later died.
A woman was shot to death Wednesday night, also in Englewood. The 29-year-old was sitting in a parked car in the 7400 block of South Vincennes Avenue when two people approached and opened fire about 7 p.m., police said. She was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Four people were wounded in a shooting in Parkway Gardens on the South Side around 11:40 a.m. A group of people were on a sidewalk in the 6300 block of South King Drive when someone wearing a red jogging suit approached and started firing, police said. A 73-year-old man was shot in the leg and a 51-year-old woman was struck in the back, police said. Both were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in fair condition. A male whose age was not immediately known suffered a gunshot wound to his arm, police said. He was taken to the same hospital. Later, a 46-year-old man showed up at the University of Chicago Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his leg. His condition was stabilized.
Three people were wounded in Little Village on the Southwest Side. Just before 2 p.m., two boys, both 17, and a man, 68, were in the 4000 block of 26th Street when a dark-colored car pulled up and someone inside opened fire, police said. One teen was struck in the shoulder and leg and taken to Stroger Hospital, police said. The other teen suffered a graze wound to the abdomen and was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said. The man was struck in the left knee and taken to the same hospital. All three victims were listed in good condition.

At least three other people were wounded in shootings across Chicago Wednesday.

Five people were shot, one fatally, Tuesday in Chicago.

Lukas Reichel is on his way to the Chicago BlackhawksVincent Pariseon January 13, 2022 at 12:00 pm

The Chicago Blackhawks are set to play the Montreal Canadiens tonight. They are on a two-game winning streak after defeating both the Vegas Golden Knights and Columbus Blue Jackets. That came after a very embarrassing loss to the Arizona Coyotes who are one of the two worst teams in the National Hockey League.

The team competing with the Coyotes for that distinction of the worst is the Montreal Canadiens. Ironically, as mentioned before, the Habs are in Chicago to take on the Hawks. Chicago is better than them in every way right now but they have to go out there and prove it.

Unfortunately, with a record of 13-16-5, they sit 10 points out of a playoff spot in the Western Conference. They have no chance of making it to the postseason this year. They are going to sell off any unrestricted free agents and continue to build toward the future.

Speaking of the future, their top prospect Lulas Reichel is very promising. He was selected by the Hawks with the 17th pick of the first round in the 2020 NHL Draft. Playing with the Rockford Ice Hogs this season, he has 11 goals and 9 assists for 20 points in 20 games.

The Blackhawks have recalled forward Lukas Reichel from the @goicehogs and assigned him to the taxi squad ? pic.twitter.com/woN7tyD8r5

Lukas Reichel will make his NHL debut tomorrow vs. Canadiens, Derek King says.

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) January 12, 2022

Lukas Reichel is going to be a great player for the Chicago Blackhawks.

It is very hard to be a point per game player in the AHL just like it is in the NHL. For Reichel, it is even more impressive because of the fact that he is still 19 years old and won’t turn 20 until May. He has a very bright future if he keeps up this trajectory.

The Blackhawks confirmed that he has been called up from the Rockford Ice Hogs. He is going to make his NHL debut tonight against the Montreal Canadiens. They didn’t call him up to use him in a depth role or have him sitting on the Taxi Squad for longer than a day.

This is an exciting moment for Reichel and for Blackhawks fans. However, don’t expect him to stick with the team for very long. It would be pointless to burn an entire year of his NHL entry-level deal. After nine games, letting him get to ten would be a waste. This team isn’t going anywhere and it would be better to retain him for as long as they can.

The Blackhawks are in trouble as the future doesn’t appear to be as bright as some may think. With that said, there are some really good young players to consider a part of the future core. The Blackhawks want Reichel to be a part of that. We can only hope that he is.

Harden on blowout of Bulls: ‘We’re that good’on January 13, 2022 at 12:01 pm

CHICAGO — The Brooklyn Nets left no doubt about just how good they can be when Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden are playing together in Wednesday night’s 138-112 demolition of the Eastern Conference-leading Chicago Bulls.

“We’re that good,” Harden said, when asked whether he was surprised at how quickly the trio’s chemistry has come together. “We got a chance to be that good. We just haven’t had enough of it. I think last year we probably had 15 games maybe together, a little more, a little less. And this year only two. We haven’t had a real bulk of a season — y’all can consistently see how great we can be. And we’re working on that. We need to get to that point.”

While Harden acknowledged that even he isn’t sure just how much better the trio can be, he is confident they will develop even more cohesion as the Nets work Irving back into the fold.

“We just got to do it,” Harden said. “Since I’ve been here it’s been crazy, a lot of ups and downs, honestly. From last year coming into this year, we haven’t had any consistency for any reason but … we’re not far at all. We’re all killers. We attack. But we’re all unselfish. We like to just make the right play. So it won’t take long at all. We just got to be out there on the court and be out there doing it.”

The Nets came into this game with an 0-8 record against the top four teams in the Eastern and Western conferences. Their 39-19 outburst in the third quarter broke open the game and was the most they had outscored any opponent in one quarter all season.

“You definitely want to play great against the best teams in the league for sure,” Durant said. “Especially after losing last game, we wanted to bounce back no matter who it was against. But it’s good to come in here and a tough environment and get a W. This team has been extremely hot lately … you can feel it, [fans] are starting to understand that Chicago Bulls basketball is back, so for us to come in here and win in this fashion, it meant a lot to us.”

Durant noted that he believed the key for the Nets was being locked in on the defensive end, which has been an issue for the team over the past few weeks. With Irving back — after the Nets reversed course last month and allowed him to return to the team despite the fact he’s not vaccinated against COVID-19 — the Nets’ confidence is suddenly sky high again. Irving didn’t waver in the belief that the Nets could still be a serious title contender despite the fact that he can play in only most road games because of New York City’s vaccination mandate.

“We had an unbelievable resolve I felt like all night,” Irving said. “We were in that flow where it gets dangerous for other teams or our opponent.”

Harden is still holding out hope that Irving will be able to play in home games at some point in the season.

“I’m going to give him the shot,” Harden said with a smile.

In the short term, Nets coach Steve Nash left open the possibility that Durant and potentially a few other veterans might sit Thursday night as the Nets complete their second back-to-back of the week against the Oklahoma City Thunder. In the long term, Wednesday offered another glimpse of just how great the Nets can be when their stars are clicking on all cylinders.

“These games can definitely give a team confidence,” Nash said. “Give ’em mojo and something to build on, but it can also not. So it’s in the bank. We’ve shown that we can perform this way, we’ve shown the type of spirit and energy we can bring to the game, the purpose. Now we got to build on it. … We raised our level. We competed. We rose to the occasion, and now we move forward and hopefully it is a moment in time that helps us get to another level.”

Bulls’ Jones helped off with knee injury vs. Netson January 13, 2022 at 12:45 pm

CHICAGOBulls forward Derrick Jones Jr. had to be helped to the locker room during Wednesday’s 138-112 loss to the Brooklyn Nets after landing awkwardly on his right leg 36 seconds into the game.

The Bulls announced Jones would not return for the remainder of the game due to a right knee injury. Head coach Billy Donovan did not have an update on Jones after the game.

Jones had been in Chicago’s starting lineup the past six games while filling in for Javonte Green, who has been sidelined with a strained groin. Jones is averaging 6.5 points and 3.5 rebounds while shooting 58% in his first season with Chicago.

The Bulls are also missing guard Alex Caruso, who was still in the league’s health and safety protocols before Wednesday’s game. Donovan said he did not expect him to play in Friday’s game against the Golden State Warriors.

“It’s going to be tough because you can’t replace those guys,” Bulls guard Zach LaVine said after the game. “It’s always been a next-man-up mentality that we’ve had. It’s something we’re going to have to do because it’s not like anybody is going to feel sorry for us having some guys out. Everybody’s had guys out.”

Bulls embarrassed in loss to the Nets, and now have to move on

This was the stage that Zach LaVine has wanted to be on for years.

A nationally televised game, the United Center at a fever pitch, and the three-headed monster of Kyrie Irving, James Harden and Kevin Durant in the building for bragging rights atop the Eastern Conference.

A meaningful game in January.

And not the pretend “meaningful games” that former coach Jim Boylen would try peddling to the masses, passing off two teams battling for a 10th seed play-in spot as meaningful. No, Nets-Bulls – and a Nets team with it’s “Big Three” for just the 16th time since its creation – each looking to make a statement about their place in the conference’s power structure.

One did and the other was embarrassed.

Thanks to a shock-and-awe 43-8 run in the second half, the Nets hammered the home team, handing the Bulls their worst loss of the season in the 138-112 laugher.

As for that three-headed monster? Durant finished with 27 and Harden with 25. Irving was held in check with just nine. The Bulls’ “smaller three” were led by LaVine’s 22 and DeMar DeRozan’s 19.

“I don’t think you throw it out, I think you own it,” coach Billy Donovan said of the loss. “I think our guys have worked really hard up to this point to be where we are in the standings, and I think with that there’s an even greater responsibility.

“We have to understand and learn that these are some of the things I’ve been talking about from a defensive standpoint. … I’m not saying we didn’t want to win the game but we have to understand how to play in games like this.”

It didn’t help that the Bulls lost starting forward Derrick Jones Jr. minutes into the game to a right knee injury, and did so at a position that was already thin.

Alfonzo McKinnie stepped in and through the first half the Bulls showed they could trade punches with the Nets. Until they couldn’t.

“Understand we got our ass kicked [Wednesday],” DeRozan said. “It’s how we bounce back from it. Let it sink in, let it suck, let it hurt. It seemed like everything went wrong, obviously it had to with the run they went on. Everything was on us.

“We’re going to get every team’s best shot.”

The hope is they can take that shot, despite what it looked like against the Nets (26-14). Donovan feels like LaVine will be able to, especially when it matters.

“He is the ultimate team guy,” Donovan said, discussing what LaVine has transformed into. “He just tries to play the right way.”

That’s been on display this entire season. Heck, it was on display since the summer when LaVine joined Team USA for the gold medal run in the Olympics.

The Tuesday dominance over Detroit was just the latest example of why Donovan has seen his All-Star continue to mature.

A 10-shot, 10-point game in the past would have irked LaVine. Instead, LaVine was all smiles, still grabbing nine rebounds and handing out seven assists, with his only concern being getting the W.

“I think he realizes there’s probably a little bit more help around him than maybe he has had with Vooch [Nikola Vucevic] and DeMar,” Donovan said. “He can go hunt shots because he can get his shot any time he wants to. But he really is very, very much invested in winning. He’s very much invested in the team. And he wants to do things that are sustainable for a long time.”

The next step is doing against the league’s elite. Losses to Dallas and Brooklyn in the last week show that this group is blinking for the first time this season. It’s about getting back on track.

“We got an ass-whooping,” LaVine said. “It happens sometimes. The third quarter killed us. Go back look at the film. It’s just something to get you a little more hungry.”

Shaq sells stake in Kings, may be ‘back someday’on January 13, 2022 at 4:18 am

Shaquille O’Neal, who became a partial owner of the Sacramento Kings in 2013, announced on social media Wednesday that he has officially sold his interest in the NBA club.

O’Neal, 49, who retired from the NBA in 2011 and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016, posted on his official Twitter page that in order to pursue a business interest in the sports gambling world, he had to leave the Kings.

“As a result of a new business endeavor, I was required by NBA rules to sell my interest in the Sacramento Kings. I want to thank the fans, the city of Sacramento, Vivek Ranadive and the entire Kings organization for our great partnership. I loved being an owner of such a forward thinking organization and I hope to be back someday,” O’Neal tweeted. “I was fortunate to have Arctos help me with this transaction. I’m sure they will be a great partner for Vivek, the Kings and the NBA going forward.

“Till we meet again…”

According to the Sports Business Journal, O’Neal will be featured in WynnBet’s advertising campaigns and as the face of a new “ShaqPot” free-to-play prediction game sponsored by the sportsbook.

Along with appearing in television, print and digital promotions, the Sports Business Journal also reported that O’Neal will appear on WynnBet-sponsored podcasts produced at a casino in Las Vegas.

In an August interview with Complex.com, O’Neal spoke highly of his prospects with WynnBet, especially as sports gambling gains a stronger presence across all media.

“We believe WynnBet is going to be the next big player in sports betting and iGaming space. And I’m all about challenges,” he told Complex. “I’m all about good business. I’m all about helping people, making people smile and I thought this was a great opportunity to get in this space.”

The four-time NBA champion made the announcement on a night when one of his former clubs, the Los Angeles Lakers, met the Kings in Sacramento.

The Kings entered Wednesday’s game at 16-27, tied for 12th place in the Western Conference with the New Orleans Pelicans.
