Newborn baby found dead in duffle bag outside Near North Side firehouse

A newborn baby was found dead in a duffle bag early Saturday outside a firehouse in River North, police said.

About 5 a.m., the baby boy was found in the 1000 block of North Orleans Street and was pronounced dead at the scene, Chicago police said.

The baby was found outside a firehouse that holds a specialized unit, according to Chicago fire spokesman Larry Merritt.

Area Three detectives and the Cook County medical examiner’s office are investigating.

In Illinois, parents have up to 30 days to hand over their infant at a “Safe Haven” location if they can’t care for their child or choose not to — no questions asked.

Under state law, Safe Haven locations include hospitals and emergency care facilities, as well as police and fire stations with staff on duty.

When a newborn is left at a Safe Haven location, the child is brought to the nearest hospital, where the baby will receive a physical examination and necessary medical care. The child will eventually be released to an adoption agency.

Sam Lafferty hoping to retain sizable role during ‘fresh start’ with Blackhawks

The start of Sam Lafferty’s Blackhawks tenure wasn’t ideal.

One day after his Jan. 5 trade from the Penguins, he arrived in Chicago and tested positive for COVID-19, leaving him stuck in a hotel room in an unfamiliar city and absent from what was supposed to be his first road trip with the Hawks.

“It was pretty crazy, a tough bounce,” he said Friday. “But luckily, it was only five days. I should be in the clear for the next 90 days or so, so [it’s] nice to get it out of the way in that sense.”

(Lafferty referenced a rule where the NHL does not resume testing players who recover from COVID until 90 days later.)

The 26-year-old forward finally made his Hawks debut Thursday against the Canadiens — although it was heavily overshadowed by Lukas Reichel’s simultaneous debut — and played a sizable 15:17 of ice time.

He’d averaged just 8:43 per game during his 10 appearances earlier this season with the Penguins, despite generating a solid 57.1% scoring-chance ratio at even strength with them. He continued that Thursday by being on the ice for five Hawks chances and just two Canadiens chances.

[The trade was] still bit of a shock to the system, but when I heard it was Chicago, I was super excited,” he said. “Just a fresh start is huge. I can come in here and hopefully carve out a role with this team. Everyone’s been really good to me so far, so I want to return the favor and play some good hockey.”

Lafferty started Thursday on the fourth line but was bumped up to the third-line center role, in between Henrik Borgstrom and surging Philipp Kurashev, on Saturday against the Ducks. He also has immediately stepped in on the penalty kill.

Interim coach Derek King views Lafferty as best-suited at center, citing his strong skating as the main reason why, and Lafferty himself also named his skating and speed as the “cornerstones” of his game.

“If I’m given an opportunity to show what I can do, I’m looking forward to that,” he added. “Hopefully we can keep it rolling here.”

Why the Chicago Bears must pass on Brian FloresJason Parinion January 15, 2022 at 9:35 pm

Not long after the Miami Dolphins surprisingly fired head coach Brian Flores, the market immediately heated up with multiple teams pursuing the young coach.

One of those teams was the Chicago Bears, who interviewed Flores on Friday for their head coach vacancy.

Many Bears fans were immediately in on Flores, who showed some promise in his three seasons with the Dolphins. Numerous sources even had Flores as the top choice for the Chicago job.

One of those was NFL insider Ian Rapoport, who mentioned that he felt that Flores would “do a great job in Chicago” on the Pat McAfee Show.

Flores was 24-25 with the Dolphins, with a winning season in two of his three seasons. He led the Dolphins to a 10-6 season in 2020 and was 19-14 in the last two years.

Brian Flores has been named as a top candidate for the Chicago Bears head coaching position. Here’s why they must pass on him.

Alas, most of Flores’s success has been a result of the defense. Flores, a defensive coach himself, has struggled to produce a reliable offense in his tenure with the Dolphins. At times, Flores even employed a dual-offensive coordinator scheme in an attempt to improve the offense.

Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa has been in the bottom third of most major quarterback stats and the Fins were ahead of only the New York Jets, the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Houston Texans for yards per game in 2021 and only four other AFC teams for points per game this year.

While some of that is attributed to the team’s horrendous offensive line, it shouldn’t be overlooked on Flores’s resume.

In addition to an underwhelming offense, Flores reportedly had numerous rifts with players and the coaching staff. Some reports even suggested that he had stopped talking to some individuals way back in November.

While a blunt coach who demands more is never a bad thing in the game of football, it’s concerning when that results in division instead of unity in an organization.

And that’s not the only potential character flaw in Flores.

According to insider Jordan Schultz, Flores and troubled quarterback Deshaun Watson have been in “constant contact” and could end up together in numerous organizations.

Developing story: Deshaun Watson and Brian Flores have been in constant communication trying to navigate a scenario where they go to the same team, per sources. Watson “trusts and likes” Flores and has been adamant internally that he’d like to play for him next season. https://t.co/HhBScUy85m

— Jordan Schultz (@Schultz_Report) January 15, 2022

No. Absolutely not. None of that for the Chicago Bears, please.

Most importantly, Watson belongs nowhere near an NFL organization given the twenty-two pending lawsuits against him. Watson may find himself in a court room at any given time and has no business being employed by anyone other than the state penitentiary if any of the accusations are true.

And if Flores is this hellbent on working with Watson, that’s a major red flag for many reasons.

Watson hasn’t played a down in the NFL since January of 2021. That would mean nearly two years between snaps. Even if he is able to play, Watson could bring a dark cloud over the locker room with the off-field questions and legal issues surrounding him.

That’s another strike against Flores and his apparent apathy towards locker room and organizational unity.

The Bears need to focus on developing young quarterback Justin Fields, and a defensive coach who has struggled to generate a productive offense in three years and has had numerous rifts with the coaching staff and players is not anyone that the organization should be pursuing.

There’s just too many red flags around Flores to even pursue a second interview, and today’s news about his seeming obsession with coaching Watson is deeply concerning for numerous reasons.

It’s time to move on and find someone who will work with Fields, even if that means altering a coaching philosophy or style of coaching in order to bring out what’s best in him and the team.

Related Story:Three candidates for the Chicago Bears to replace Ryan Pace

The Bears just rid themselves of a head coach whose “my way or the highway” method alienated numerous quarterbacks and produced an awful offense for the past three seasons. The last thing they should be doing is pursuing another coach who’s unable to develop a quarterback or focus on the overall well-being of the locker room.

Bulls: No structural damage to LaVine’s kneeon January 15, 2022 at 7:16 pm

print

CHICAGOBulls guard Zach LaVine is not expected to miss significant time after an MRI to his left knee showed no structural damage on Saturday morning.

LaVine will be reevaluated early next week, the team said. LaVine did not travel with the team for its game Saturday night in Boston, and he will begin targeted therapy on his knee before the Bulls can offer a more definitive timeline.

LaVine landed awkwardly while grabbing an offensive rebound during the first quarter of Friday’s game against the Golden State Warriors. He took an intentional foul on the next play before taking himself out of the game.

The Bulls were optimistic following Friday’s game that LaVine had avoided a major injury, but wanted to proceed with caution considering LaVine tore the ACL in the same knee in 2017 while playing for the Timberwolves.

In 38 games for Chicago this season, LaVine is averaging 24.9 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists while shooting 49% from the field.

MRI shows no structural damage in left knee of Bulls guard Zach LaVine

The Bulls couldn’t avoid another embarrassing performance on national television on Friday, but they did avoid a catastrophic injury to their season.

The team confirmed initial reports on the Zach LaVine left knee injury, saying that his Saturday MRI showed no structural damage for the All-Star guard. He will be reassessed next week, and a better timeline will be made available.

That’s a huge sigh of relief for the Bulls, who despite back-to-back blow-out losses, sat atop the Eastern Conference, thanks in large part to the play of DeMar DeRozan and LaVine.

It was in the first quarter in the eventual 138-96 loss to Golden State that LaVine grabbed an offensive rebound and later told his coach that he felt discomfort in the knee that was surgically repaired back in 2017, when he tore his anterior cruciate ligament.

Rather than force the issue, LaVine committed the intentional foul to get the stoppage, and headed straight to the locker room with trainer Arnold Lee. Billy Donovan did confirm after the game that LaVine had been dealing with normal soreness that comes with an NBA season in mid-January, but nothing with the knee that was concerning enough to keep him sidelined.

That obviously changed for LaVine after grabbing the rebound.

The initial feeling throughout the franchise, however, was the injury was a small setback for his season rather than a long-term concern, and the MRI showed that was the case.

LaVine will be a free agent this offseason, and has hundreds of millions on the line. Dealing with knee soreness and swelling for the last month when it was just maintenance and time spent with the training staff was one thing, according to a source, but the feeling he had with the knee Friday was next level.

Meanwhile, LaVine did not travel to Boston for Saturday night’s showdown with the Celtics and the start of a two-game road trip, leaving the Bulls to continue that next-man-up mentality.

Although, these are some big shoes to fill.

Much like he did last season, LaVine has been one of the more efficient scorers in the NBA, averaging 24.9 points per game and doing so by shooting 49.1% from the field and 41.2% from three-point range.

What’s excited the organization, though, is what he’s also evolved into in Year 2 with Donovan on the defensive side of the basketball.

Still, in a no-excuses league, Donovan wasn’t about to make excuses for his team moving forward without LaVine.

“There’s enough for us to compete better than we did [Friday],” Donovan said. “We have to build habits as a team on the things that we can control – transition defense, communication, blocking out, pulling across, taking care of the ball. Those are things that have nothing to do with injuries and people being out.”
