The Chicago Bears will not play on Super Wild Card Weekend next yearVincent Pariseon January 18, 2022 at 12:00 pm

We just watched a very fun set of games during the NFL’s Super Wild Card Weekend. There was a lot of drama all over the country as each of the teams tried to make their way to the Division Round next weekend.

The Green Bay Packers and Tennessee Titans each had a bye after securing the top seeds in the NFC and AFC respectfully. They are each legit Super Bowl contenders as they are now getting ready for their first playoff opponent.

Each game had its own storyline which made it an incredibly entertaining weekend. There was drama all over the place which is something that makes the NFL so special. Whoever wins the Super Bowl is going to be proud because this league has so many great teams and players.

AFC

In the AFC round, the very fun and entertaining Cincinnati Bengals defeated the Las Vegas Raiders in a very controversial game. There were some debates over the rules and calls on certain plays but Joe Burrow’s team prevailed.

The other two games in the conference were blowouts. The Buffalo Bills absolutely destroyed the New England Patriots and the Kansas City Chiefs throttled the Pittsburgh Steelers. Each of those games sort of went exactly as expected so there wasn’t much surprise.

Both the Patriots and Steelers had incredible runs over the last 20 years but the Bills and Chiefs got the best of them. Now, those two will face each other next week and the Bengals will play the Titans.

NFC

Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers absolutely steamrolled the Philadelphia Eagles. The defending champions are off to the second round as Brady has clearly proved that it was mostly all him in New England. The Bucs were 7-9 in 2019-20 and magically haven’t lost a playoff game since Tom’s arrival.

What can go wrong will go wrong for the Dallas Cowboys. They were down big to the San Francisco 49ers but they almost came back. Some very poor decisions and bad penalties allowed San Francisco to hang on.

For the first time ever, we had a playoff game featured on Monday Night Football. It was a battle between the Los Angeles Rams and Arizona Cardinals. Unfortunately, it was another predictable blowout as the Rams defeated the Cardinals by a score of 34-11.

Next week, the Green Bay Packers will host the San Francisco 49ers while the Los Angeles Rams head down to Tampa Bay to take on Tom Brady’s Buccaneers. It should be a lot of fun to see how that goes.

The Chicago Bears are not nearly as good as any of these teams right now.

The Chicago Bears have no chance of playing on Super Wild Card weekend in 2022-23. They don’t currently have a coach or a general manager but those roles will be filled in short order. When that new duo comes in, a lot of work needs to be done.

Chicago has the foundation set (they hope) with Justin Fields. He has all of the raw physical talents that need to develop into an NFL-caliber quarterback. Until that happens, and it won’t overnight, the Bears have no shot.

When you watched these teams that made the postseason, it was clear that the Bears are so far away from all of them. They hope that they have a better quarterback than some of them which is a nice start but they have a long way to go before they are a playoff team again. Seeing them turn it around quickly is possible but don’t count on it. It would be fun but it doesn’t seem realistic.

Magic’s Mosley disappointed to miss MLK Dayon January 18, 2022 at 6:35 am

Orlando Magic coach Jamahl Mosley expressed disappointment over the timing of his entrance into the health and safety protocols on Monday — his first Martin Luther King Jr. Day as an NBA head coach.

The Magic hosted the Portland Trail Blazers, and two of the NBA’s five Black head coaches who are in their first season — Mosley and Chauncey Billups — expected to be on the sidelines in Orlando on Monday night.

“This is such a big day — with meaning behind myself and so many others having this opportunity because of what Dr. King fought for,” Mosley told ESPN on Monday. “Our locker rooms are represented by his dream. His words, example of leadership, fight for equality and strength are just as important now as they were then.”

Billups hosted Mosley on his recruiting trip to the University of Colorado in 1996, and the two CU stars had a shared pride in becoming head coaches in the same hiring cycle last spring.

“I’ll really miss being out there against Chauncey, a fellow Buff,” Mosley told ESPN before the game.

Mosley and his top assistant Nate Tibbetts entered protocols on Monday, clearing the way for assistant Jesse Mermuys to serve as the acting head coach in the Magic’s 98-88 loss.

All five of the Black head coaches who are in their first season were scheduled to be active on Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Mosley, Billups, the Boston Celtics‘ Ime Udoka, the Washington Wizards‘ Wes Unseld Jr. and the New Orleans Pelicans‘ Willie Green.

Both Mosley and Unseld were unable to coach due to entering protocols.

QB Johnson returns to Clemson as rare transferon January 18, 2022 at 6:10 am

Dabo Swinney has finally dipped into the transfer portal to bolster his roster, and he did it by bringing back a former Clemson football player.

Quarterback Hunter Johnson, a onetime top recruit, will return to Clemson after spending the past four seasons at Northwestern. The move was first reported by 247 Sports.

The move adds needed depth to Clemson’s QB room a year after D.J. Uiagalelei struggled and the team lost three games, in addition to failing to take home the ACC championship for the first time since 2014. Clemson also signed four-star quarterback Cade Klubnik, who figures to compete for reps this spring.

Swinney has long avoided adding transfers and was vocal in his frustrations this season at being asked repeatedly why he didn’t use the portal to add depth to a team that lacked experience in several key areas, particularly on offense.

“I wouldn’t do anything differently,” Swinney said in October 2021. “I’m not opposed to the transfer portal. If I was at another school, that might be all I signed was transfer portal guys. … But I’m at Clemson, and we’ve been able to sign great kids that we believe in. … If we need to use the portal, we’ll use it. But I’m not going to do something just to do something.”

Johnson signed with Clemson in 2017 out of Brownsburg (Indiana) High. He was rated as the No. 1 overall pocket passer by ESPN. He played a limited role as the Tigers’ third-string QB as a true freshman before announcing a transfer in the spring of 2018, after future No. 1 overall NFL draft pick Trevor Lawrence arrived on campus.

From 2018 through 2021, Johnson appeared in 10 games at Northwestern, including eight starts. He won just two of those starts, completing 48% of his throws with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Johnson said he was initially planning to apply to Clemson’s MBA program and had approached Swinney about serving as a graduate assistant in 2022. Swinney instead asked if he’d be open to playing another season.

“I’m really looking at this as an opportunity to come in and help the team in any way I can,” Johnson said.

Johnson said he’s set to join Clemson on campus in May.

Clemson’s backup QB in 2021, Taisun Phommachanh, entered the transfer portal in December.

Seth Jones’ absence finally catches up to Blackhawks in loss to Kraken

Jones tested out of COVID-19 protocols Monday but missed his fourth straight game, and the Hawks’ undermanned defense cracked without its biggest minutes-eater in a 3-2 shootout loss.

SEATTLE — For three games, Seth Jones’ absence didn’t seem to be hurting the Blackhawks nearly as much as expected.

On Monday, however, it did.

The Hawks’ defense was gradually worn down by the Kraken to the point of exhaustion, and Marc-Andre Fleury’s constant heroics in goal eventually proved unable to save them. The 3-2 shootout loss ended their four-game winning streak, as well as the Kraken’s nine-game losing streak.

“We were sloppy,” interim coach Derek King said. “We had moments where we looked good, but then there were moments where we were tired. The travel was a little bit crazy for us. We’ll have to get these guys plenty of rest.”

The Hawks’ January schedule has been relatively forgiving so far in terms of quality of competition. Monday marked their fourth consecutive game — and fifth in their last six — against opponents either currently in, or who finished last season in, the bottom four of the NHL.

But in terms of travel, with nine games (across all four time zones) over the past 17 days, it has been intense.

It’s plausible the Hawks might’ve started looking ahead late Monday, in between huffed breaths, to their three-day break that begins Tuesday. During the third period and overtime combined, the Kraken dominated shots on goal (19-6), scoring chances (23-7) and high-danger scoring chances (12-0).

“We’ve got guys coming off of COVID, or you’re playing a lot, you travel, you’re back and forth [on a] four-hour flight,” King added. “It catches up to you.”

Seth Jones did, at least, finally test out of protocol Monday back in Chicago, King said. He should presumably be ready Friday against the Wild.

Jake McCabe, who initially tested positive for COVID the same day as Jones but never developed symptoms and tested out quicker, was able to return Monday. However, he looked somewhat “off” — in King’s words — during his 19:09 of ice time.

He produced some good shifts, such as one where he broke up a developing chance and then delivered a big hit to help exit the zone. He also endured some bad shifts, such as one where Ryan Donato blew past him in the neutral zone and scored on the rush to tie the game, 2-2.

“They took over the game in the third,” McCabe said. “That second [Kraken] goal was a tough one for me personally to swallow — I got stuck in no man’s land. … [I was] just a little rusty here and there on some plays, but overall not too bad.”

King oddly elected to remove upward-trending rookie Jakub Galvas from the lineup to fit McCabe, keeping in Caleb Jones.

That decision backfired. Caleb Jones struggled mightily, finishing with a 12.5% even-strength scoring chance ratio (one for, seven against) in addition to numerous turnovers and a third-period penalty.

King first excused Caleb Jones’ poor performance as a result of his frequent bouncing in and out of the lineup this season. That didn’t exactly check out, because Jones played four straight games during his brother’s absence. King later acknowledged that fact.

“He’s got to take advantage…when we have some ‘D’ that are not healthy and he gets a chance to play,” he said.

That is one benefit from Hawks’ four games without Seth Jones: they were able to see which defensemen could handle bigger roles when needed.

Galvas, who produced a 52.0% scoring chance ratio (and saved a goal Saturday) while averaging over 20 minutes in his three games, showed he could. So did Riley Stillman, who has diversified and improved his game noticeably since last spring.

Caleb Jones, conversely, fell completely flat. Ian Mitchell did very little against the Blue Jackets in the first game of the four and never received another opportunity. Nicolas Beaudin was tellingly never used at all.

Blackhawks notebook: Marc-Andre Fleury’s stellar January keeps getting better

Marc-Andre Fleury made 35 saves even as the Blackhawks lost Monday. | AP Photo/Ted S. Warren

Fleury is now 4-0-1 with a .956 save percentage over his last five starts, including a heroic effort in Monday’s 3-2 shootout loss.

SEATTLE — Coming off a perfect 3-0-0 week with a .957 save percentage, Marc-Andre Fleury was named Monday morning the NHL’s second star of the week.

The veteran goalie then delivered arguably his most heroic performance yet this month on Monday afternoon in the Blackhawks’ 3-2 shootout loss to the Kraken.

“It was probably a good thing ‘Flower’ was on his game, because he got us a point tonight,” interim coach Derek King said.

With the worn-out Hawks inundated in their own zone throughout the first and third periods, then again in overtime, Fleury almost singlehandedly carried the team through 65 minutes of hockey.

He twice robbed Kraken leading scorer Jared McCann in crucial third-period moments, first on a backdoor play on the power play — Jake McCabe would later describe it as “one of the saves of the year” — and later on the first penalty shot in Seattle history.

“I was just sitting on the bench, watched the replay, and I was like, ‘What is he doing out there?’” Dominik Kubalik said. “It’s unbelievable. I’m not saying I was expecting [some shots were] already going in, but somehow he always made a save. For sure, he gave us the point.”

Although his shutout streak of over 119 minutes — dating back to Thursday against the Canadiens — was snapped late in the second period, he still finished with 35 saves on 37 shots.

That was in spite of the fact he’s still “winded” by his COVID-19 infection two weeks ago, King said, and not feeling 100% healthy.

In January overall, Fleury is now 4-1-2 with a .927 save percentage. His plus-3.8 goals-saved-above-expected rate over that time period ranks fifth in the league, and his .881 save percentage against high-danger shots is tied for sixth.

Kane supports DeBrincat selection

Seeing Patrick Kane not only not selected but not even listed on the fan-vote ballot for the All-Star Game was jarring, even though the chosen Hawks — Alex DeBrincat is already in and Seth Jones is a fan-vote candidate — do make sense.

After all, Kane had basically become an annual All-Star before the pandemic hit, attending six straight from 2015 to 2020. But he doesn’t seem to mind his 2022 exclusion. He will get an extra weekend of rest out of it.

“[DeBrincat is] the guy who was most deserving on our team, and he’s been our best player this year, so it’s fitting he’s going,” Kane said Saturday.

DeBrincat, meanwhile, said he was excited for his first career appearance — while acknowledging the Hawks “have a couple of guys who probably could’ve went.” And the trip to Las Vegas will outweigh a few days of rest.

“I’m a young guy,” he said. “I can take the weekend to go have some fun. … I don’t think there’s any chance I‘ll say no. It’s an honor, and I can rest on an off-day or something.”

Reichel’s smooth transition

After his expected Sunday reassignment, Lukas Reichel readjusted back to the AHL seamlessly Monday, recording a goal and an assist in the Rockford IceHogs’ 5-3 loss to the Chicago Wolves.

“It’s just [about] the reps, the ice time, the practice time,” King said, explaining the benefit of Reichel spending most of his time there. “We do a lot of development stuff down there, whether it’s edge work [or] puck skills.”

Henrik Borgstrom took over Reichel’s first-line center spot Monday between Patrick Kane and Brandon Hagel, and Mike Hardman slid into the lineup in Borgstrom’s place.

Bulls drop a fourth-straight game, showing little fight in Memphis

Besides a dust-up involving Grizzlies star Ja Morant and Bulls big man Tony Bradley, the visiting team didn’t offer up much resistance after the first quarter.

With 5:32 left in Monday’s game, there was finally some aggressiveness from the Bulls.

Unfortunately, not the type of fight that was going to win them many games or popularity contests from around the league.

With Memphis taking advantage of the lackluster Bulls effort most of the afternoon, Grizzlies star Ja Morant was trying to split defenders and get to the rim. Bulls reserve big man Tony Bradley stuck his leg out, appearing to put a road block up around Morant’s knees, leading to the two players locking up.

Some jersey tugging, a basketball shoved into the chest, and eventually Memphis big man Steven Adams playing bouncer, physically moving Bradley backwards from his teammate, resulted in Morant and Bradley each getting technical fouls, as well as Bradley getting the flagrant foul for the attempted leg sweep.

When that’s the memorable moment for a team on an afternoon, it’s about to be a bad day at the office.

That’s what it was for the Bulls, falling 119-106 to the Grizzlies, and losing their season-high fourth-straight game.

Three of which now fall into the embarrassing category.

The latest culprit? Shaky second-quarter offensive possessions and trouble taking care of the basketball.

“I thought it was our offense,’’ coach Billy Donovan said. “I thought we kind of got bogged down with some possessions there that weren’t great, and then the other thing too is the turnovers really hurt us. When you look at their team there’s three things that significantly stand out – the first is the offensive rebounds. They get out in transition, they run really well. And when you turn the ball over and you miss shots it allows them to get out.’’

That’s how a 20-20 game after one became a laugher going into the locker room at the half.

Not only did Memphis outscore the Bulls 38-25 in that second stanza, but did it exactly the way Donovan warned his team they would: Turning Bulls misses into quick outlet passes and easy baskets.

Then factor in the Bulls had 12 turnovers in that first half that led to 13 points, and it was a recipe for disaster.

“I think just paying attention to detail,’’ guard Coby White said of the meltdown. “During that time we had a couple bad turnovers, but also a couple makes and we just didn’t get back in the second quarter. We just fell apart in transition. We didn’t get matched up.’’

There’s no questioning that the Bulls (27-15) were up against it in the finale of this short two-game road trip, having just 10 players available and still missing the likes of Zach LaVine, Lonzo Ball, Alex Caruso and Javonte Green.

Not easy to deal with in taking on most teams, let alone a Memphis team that has been one of the best in the league since Thanksgiving, especially on the defensive end.

But it was essentially the same roster that took the Celtics to the brink on Saturday in Boston, having a chance to win that game at the buzzer.

Monday, they looked beaten getting off the pregame bus.

“We never lost hope,’’ White said. “We thought we could fight our way back like we did in Boston, but we just can’t have those lapses. We’re going to make mistakes, things are going to happen, but just not as many mistakes as we made.’’

DeMar DeRozan led the Bulls with 24, but center Nikola Vucevic had a day to forget, going 2-for-13 and finishing with seven points.

“No matter who is out on the court, whatever we got, as long as we have five guys who play hard then we’ve got a chance to win any game,’’ White said. “We got a lot of people out, but other teams had a lot of people out earlier this year. We’re not using that as an excuse.’’
