Sources: Turner likely out beyond trade deadlineon January 19, 2022 at 3:02 pm

Indiana Pacers center Myles Turner is expected to be sidelined beyond the Feb. 10 trade deadline with a stress reaction in his left foot, complicating the franchise’s hopes to deal him prior to the offseason, sources told ESPN on Tuesday.

The Pacers, who announced the injury Tuesday, said Turner would be re-examined in two weeks for the stress reaction. Sources said the recovery time could be approximately one month.

Turner is expected to get a CT scan in two weeks to check on the healing, sources said, and that’ll help to clarify a timeline for return. Turner, 25, has been central to the Pacers’ plans to reshape an underachieving roster in a trade.

A stress reaction isn’t an injury that will frighten teams away from Turner, but his inactivity and recovery time could temper offers to the Pacers — and perhaps a deal around the NBA draft in June could be a better avenue to bring back maximum value. The Pacers have been discussing several veterans in trade talks, including Turner, Domantas Sabonis and Caris LeVert, sources said.

Turner, who has led the NBA in blocks during the 2019 and 2021 seasons, has averaged 12.9 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.8 blocks this season.

Basketball Hall of Famer Lusia Harris dies at 66

Harris helped Delta State University win three straight national titles in the 1970s and earned a silver medal for the United States at the Montreal Olympics in 1976. Harris was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992 as the first Black woman to earn that honor.

Lusia Harris, who became the only woman to be officially drafted by an NBA team and scored the first points in women’s basketball history at the Olympics, died Tuesday, her family announced. She was 66.

“We are deeply saddened to share the news that our angel, matriarch, sister, mother, grandmother, Olympic medalist, The Queen of Basketball, Lusia Harris has passed away unexpectedly today in Mississippi,” the family said in a statement. “The recent months brought Ms. Harris great joy, including the news of the upcoming wedding of her youngest son and the outpouring of recognition received by a recent documentary that brought worldwide attention to her story.”

Harris, who died in her native Mississippi, was drafted by the New Orleans Jazz in the seventh round in 1977, but didn’t try out for the team because she was pregnant at the time. The San Francisco Warriors tried to draft Denise Long in 1969, but the NBA blocked it because she didn’t meet the criteria to be drafted — in part because of her gender.

Harris helped Delta State University win three straight national titles in the 1970s and earned a silver medal for the United States at the Montreal Olympics in 1976.

Harris was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992 as the first Black woman to earn that honor. She was later enshrined into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999.

“She will be remembered for her charity, for her achievements both on and off the court, and the light she brought to her community, the state of Mississippi, her country as the first woman ever to score a basket in the Olympics, and to women who play basketball around the world,” the statement said.

Harris averaged 25.9 points and 14.4 rebounds at Delta State, lifting the team to a 109-6 record during her time there. She’s still the school’s all-time leader in scoring (2,981 points) and rebounding (1,662).

Harris was named to the U.S. women’s team in 1975. The following year, women’s basketball made its Olympic debut and Harris scored the first points in the first game of the tournament.

She was the subject of a 2021 short film titled “The Queen of Basketball” that detailed her career.

Only one Chicago Blackhawks player made the All-Star GameVincent Pariseon January 19, 2022 at 2:00 pm

The National Hockey League All-Star Game is always one of the most fun days on the calendar. Each team in the league is sending at least one player to represent their team in a 3 on 3 tournament that features one team per division. Of course, the Chicago Blackhawks are a part of Team Central Division.

Normally when you think of the Blackhawks at the All-Star Game, Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith, or Corey Crawford come to mind. Well, two of those four are no longer with the team. Toews and Kane were both left off the team as well so it is a new era in town.

Kane is still having a really good year but Alex DeBrincat deserved to be in over him. This is his first time making it to the big event and he should be proud. He is currently having an elite goal-scoring season with 23 goals and 9 assists for 32 points in 39 games.

The assist total is low but he is on pace for 48 goals which would be amongst the league leaders if he reached that number. He has the ability to score thanks to his shot and his compete-level around the net.

The Chicago Blackhawks have an All-Star level player in Alex DeBrincat.

DeBrincat is going to be surrounded by elite talent. He will share a bench with his Central Division teammates in Kyle Connor, Kirill Kaprizov, Clayton Keller, Jordan Kyrou, Nathan Mackinnon, Joe Pavelski, Cale Makar, Juuse Saros, and Cam Talbot. It is a very good team that has a legit chance to win the thing.

That list of players was the initial roster that came out. The NHL conducted a “Last Man In” vote for fans to vote in one more player per division. Seth Jones was Chicago’s representative on the ballot to try and get another Hawk in but he was beaten out by Nazem Kadri of the Colorado Avalance. That confirms that only one Blackhawks player will be there in Vegas.

To be honest, whether DeBrincat is the right choice or not, the Hawks only deserve to have one player in the All-Star Game. This team has been mostly pathetic for the entire season and has no business being put in the spotlight in a positive way. However, seeing DeBrincat get this opportunity is going to be a lot of fun.

You already heard about the awesome team that he gets to play on and there are some great players on the other teams as well. Stars like Connor McDavid, Auston Matthews, and Leon Draisaitl amongst others will show their stuff as well. This is a must-see event for all hockey fans around the world.

Chicago Cubs 2022 betting odds are not very encouragingVincent Pariseon January 19, 2022 at 1:00 pm

The Chicago Cubs are coming off of a very difficult year. They got off to a promising start before things started to unravel. After that, they traded away most of the core that won the World Series for them in 2016.

Javier Baez, Anthony Rizzo, and Kris Bryant were all traded away to end an era. They even sent Craig Kimbrel, Ryan Tepera, and Andrew Chafin away for good measure. It wasn’t a lot of fun to be a fan of the team during that time.

That left Willson Contreras, Kyle Hendricks, and Jason Heyward amongst others to figure it out and finish out the season with pride. They also saw guys like Frank Schwindel and Patrick Wisdom have outstanding seasons which allowed them to be at least watchable.

However, they made some interesting moves this offseason that have confused the baseball world. They have done things that suggest that they are rebuilding but also have done things to suggest that they are trying to win. The oddsmakers at WynnBett have set some odds that are not very encouraging.

The odds are not in the Chicago Cubs’ favor heading into the 2022 season.

The Cubs are going to have a hard time in 2022. They are currently sitting with the 24th best odds of winning the World series in a league with 30 teams. They are tied with the Minnesota Twins at +8000. They are only ahead of the Kansas City Royals, Texas Rangers, Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Baltimore Orioles on this list.

It isn’t ideal that they are projected (by the odds) to be the fourth-best team in the NL Central Division. Unfortunately, it is a result of their own bad decisions that they have made since sinning the World Series in 2016.

The over/under win total on the season is sitting at 72.5. It isn’t like they are being looked at as a 60 win team but it is still a horrid look if they don’t even reach 73 wins. They should be able to hit the over on that but it might also depend on how they handle the trade deadline as well. If they start trading off pieces like Willson Contreras, all bets are off on how bad they will be.

Meanwhile, the odds are pretty good for the team on the other side of town. The Chicago White Sox are in the top ten for World Series odds and the over/under for wins on the year is at 91.1. That team is doing great right now.

They were so good in 2021 with some bad injuries to key players so surpassing that should be relatively easy if they stay healthy. Things have turned in Chicago as far as the two baseball teams go and decision-making on both sides has a lot to do with it.

A University of Chicago police officer shot and wounded a man who opened fire in Hyde Park late Tuesday morning, officials said. An officer had stopped to investigate someone on foot with a handgun near the corner of 53rd Street and Woodlawn Avenue. The gunman opened fire as the officer stepped out of his vehicle, according to a statement from the university. The officer returned fire and struck the man. He was taken in critical condition to the university’s medical center with several gunshot wounds.
Three people were seriously wounded in a shooting in West Woodlawn on the South Side. Two men, 23 and 38, and a 38-year-old woman were shot about 4:55 p.m. in the 6200 block of South Langley Avenue, police said. The younger man was shot in the face, and the older man suffered a gunshot wound to the leg. Both were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where they were in critical condition.
