Analyzing team statistics from 1st half of Blackhawks’ 2021-22 season

DENVER — After 41 games that felt more like 410, the first half of the Blackhawks’ 2021-22 season finally concluded Saturday.

It’s a half-season the 15-19-7 Hawks would love to forget but that shouldn’t be forgotten, albeit because of the sexual-assault scandal, fallout and lessons learned rather than because of the poor on-ice results.

Even on the ice, though, it was a struggle, with the coaching change from Jeremy Colliton to Derek King improving but not entirely fixing the problems.

Here’s a comprehensive breakdown of the Hawks’ team statistics at the season’s midway point.

Even strength

The Hawks rank 32nd in goals per 60 minutes at 2.04. That’s easily the ugliest number from their first half. Only five other teams — the Islanders, Canadiens, Canucks, Coyotes and Flyers — are even below 2.30.

They’re not much better at the things that build up to scoring goals, ranking 28th in shot attempts, 30th in shots on goal, 29th in scoring chances and 32nd in expected goals, per Natural Stat Trick.

Digging deeper, the Hawks’ scoring struggles may stem from their one-dimensional offense. As has been the case for years, they’re dangerous on the rush, ranking 11th in controlled offensive-zone entry rate and 12th in shot attempts in transition (per data analyst Corey Sznajder’s tracking). But excluding rush situations, they rank 32nd in shot attempts in all other situations — like cycling and forechecking — combined.

Defensively, the Hawks are a more respectable but still below-average 21st in goals against per 60 minutes at 2.94. They’re 26th in shot attempts allowed, 21st in shots on goal allowed, 24th in scoring chances allowed and 16th in expected goals allowed.

They’ve been steadily trending up in those regards under King, however, and actually rank fifth in the league — behind only the Canucks, Kings, Avalanche and Islanders — in goals against per 60 (2.36) since King took over Nov. 6. They’re also 18th in scoring chances allowed and 14th in expected goals allowed under King.

Comparing their offensive and defensive outputs, their 45.1% scoring chance ratio ranks 28th — ahead of only the Red Wings, Flyers, Senators and Rangers — but marks a slight improvement over their 30th-ranked 44.7% ratio last season.

Special teams

The Hawks’ power play ranks 19th in the league with an 18.9% conversion rate, down from 21.7% last season.

The ‘PP’ unit falls roughly in the middle of the pack in shot attempts (20th), shots on goal (17th), scoring chances (18th) and expected goals (15th). Their strategy is primarily based on cross-seam passes; they’ve attempted the fifth-most such passes, per Sznajder.

The penalty kill, meanwhile, ranks 25th with a 76.0% kill rate, similar to last year’s 76.8% finish. That unit ranks 23rd in shots attempts allowed, 22nd in shots on goal allowed, 27th in scoring chances allowed and 18th in expected goals allowed.

Adding the ‘PP’ and ‘PK’ rates together, the Hawks’ special-teams effectiveness score comes out to 94.9, which ranks 23rd; naturally, 100 is the average. But they are somewhat balancing that out with a plus-11 differential in power plays drawn vs. conceded.

Goaltending

Despite Marc-Andre Fleury’s individual excellence in recent months, the Hawks’ team goaltending — like everything else — also falls below average across the board.

Their .903 team save percentage ranks 24th, and their .809 team save percentage against high-danger shots ranks just slightly higher at 21st. In terms of goals saved above average, Natural Stat Trick’s all-inclusive evaluator of goaltending performance, the Hawks’ minus-8.4 team total ranks 24th.

Although the Hawks’ defense hasn’t been great, as discussed above, it has helped Hawks goalies face the eighth-fewest rush shots and 14th-fewest rebound shots against.

Note: Backup goalie Kevin Lankinen was placed on injured reserve Sunday with a right hand injury he suffered Saturday and is expected to miss a few weeks. Arvid Soderblom was called up to be Fleury’s new backup.

Bucks’ Allen banned 1 game for foul on Carusoon January 23, 2022 at 10:12 pm

The NBA suspended the Milwaukee BucksGrayson Allen for one game on Sunday for his flagrant 2 foul on Alex Caruso that caused a fractured wrist for the Chicago Bulls guard.

The league punished Allen, who was ejected from the Bucks’ 94-90 victory over the Bulls on Friday night after receiving the flagrant 2 foul, for what they deemed was “unnecessary and excessive contact” according to a news release. Allen will serve his suspension during the Bucks next game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday.

Caruso is scheduled to have wrist surgery on Monday that will sideline him for six to eight weeks.

“Nothing is changing from what happened the other night to where we are now, and the best thing we can do as a team is just move on,” Bulls coach Billy Donovan said during a video conference before Sunday’s game against the Orlando Magic. “That’s really the only thing we have control over. “I feel bad for Alex that he’s going to be out this long more so than anything else.”

Friday was the first time this season Allen, who is in his first season with the Bucks, has been called for a flagrant foul and only the second time in his NBA career. In 2019, he was ejected from a Summer League game for picking up two flagrant fouls within seconds of each other.

The suspension will cost Allen his $27,963 game check, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks.

Although the Bulls are poised to be without Caruso and Lonzo Ball, who is scheduled to undergo knee surgery this week, they could be getting some reinforcements back soon. Zach LaVine and Javonte Green are both expected to meet the team on Monday in Oklahoma City. Donovan said there is “a chance” both players are available to play.

“Provided everything goes well,” Donovan said. “We’ll see where they’re at physically.”

Michael O’Brien’s Super 25 high school basketball rankings for Jan. 23, 2022

There are two suburban teams are at the top of the rankings. Glenbard West and Glenbrook South are a combined 42-1 and the only loss was the Hilltoppers’ narrow win over the Titans.

Will the suburbs be able to bring home state championships in March?

Glenbard West is clearly the Class 4A favorite. The Hilltoppers have done a nice job with their schedule this season. They have two games still open. It’s imperative that they find some tough teams to play, because Kenwood will be healthier and likely much better in March after playing in the city tournament.

Simeon remains the heavy favorite in Class 3A, although Hillcrest is steadily improving and should be a real challenge in a possible supersectional matchup.

National rankings

National rankings for high school teams are insane and not worth getting worked up about. I watch hundreds of games in the area every winter and it is difficult to rank those teams. Ranking the top 25 teams in the country is an impossible task that doesn’t make any sense.

Individual player rankings receive a lot more attention. They are breathlessly discussed all spring and summer at the shoe company tournaments. Fans subscribe to websites to read about recruits and colleges spend thousands of dollars a year on recruiting services.

So what is going on with Braden Huff? Glenbard West’s 6-9 senior is now the clear leader in the Player of the Year race and arguably the area’s best prospect since Talen Horton-Tucker (who was also weirdly low in the national rankings).

Huff is not in ESPN’s top 100 rankings. Yorkville Christian’s Jaden Schutt is No. 47, Thornton’s Ty Rodgers is No. 52 and Young’s AJ Casey checks in at 56.

247sports has Rodgers at 54, Schutt at 60 and Casey at 67. All the way down at No. 95 is Huff. That’s laughable. I guess we should throw the national player rankings in the trash as well.

Huff isn’t stressed about it all. He’s signed with Gonzaga, one of the top programs in the country.

“I’m really exited about where I’m headed and my future,” Huff said. “I do see [the rankings] and I use that as a chip on my shoulder but at the end of the day rankings don’t truly matter.”

Worried about Simeon?

Last week I touted Simeon as Glenbard West’s equal or better. My opinion hasn’t changed after the loss to Glenbrook South on Saturday. The Wolverines were without Wes Rubin, their 6-8 center. The junior averages a double-double and would have been a major factor in the post against Glenbrook South’s Nick Martinelli. Rubin won the prestigious A.C. Williamson award at Pontiac, which is very rare for a junior.

At this point in the season the top tier of Glenbard West, Simeon, Kenwood and Glenbrook South is clear. They’ve been the top four teams in the Super 25, in whatever order, since Dec. 12.

Curie, New Trier, Young and Hillcrest make up a really solid second tier and after that it is anyone’s guess. Although Wheaton Warrenville South appears nearly unbeatable with its relentless defense.
