Sources: Suns to start hotline amid investigationon January 25, 2022 at 5:38 pm

print

As the NBA nears the fourth month of its investigation into the Phoenix Suns and majority owner Robert Sarver, the team is working toward creating a confidential internal hotline in the coming weeks for employees to report complaints, team sources told ESPN.

On Monday, a Suns executive explained to colleagues that the reason for creating the internal hotline is because “no one actually uses the NBA hotline at all,” the sources told ESPN. (Other NBA teams also have internal hotlines.)

The Suns did not respond to a request for comment.

In 2018, in the wake of Sports Illustrated’s reported allegations of harassment and violence toward female employees inside the Dallas Mavericks organization, the NBA created a confidential hotline for team and league employees to voice concerns of improper conduct.

In ESPN’s November story, which outlined allegations of a sometimes toxic and hostile workplace during Sarver’s 17-year tenure in Phoenix, NBA spokesperson Mike Bass said the league had not “received a complaint of misconduct at the Suns organization through any of our processes, including our confidential workplace misconduct hotline or other correspondence.”

The NBA did not respond to a request for comment.

Employees were made aware of the NBA’s hotline in a February 2018 email from Suns team president and CEO Jason Rowley. It was noted in the email that the callers have the option to remain anonymous, but a disclaimer was included: “Note that if you make an anonymous complaint, someone could still guess your identity from the circumstances or other information you provide.”

Strip Down for a Good Cause With Cupid’s Undie Run In FebruaryJulie Caion January 25, 2022 at 2:38 pm

In a ballpark of charitable winter activities, Cupid’s Undie Run is coming to town on February 19. The annual dip into the frigid Lake Michigan benefits 7,500+ Special Olympians who compete year-round in Chicago. While you won’t be dunking yourself into the lake like The Polar Plunge, Chicago’s other iconic winter activity, there’s an equally chilly challenge. The “brief” midwinter fun run has a little twist if the name didn’t give it away––runners are clad in bright and bold underwear for this Valentine’s Day week activity.

Putting the “fun” in fundraisers

Every February, thousands across the U.S. strip down to their skivvies and party, go for a mile-ish run, and party some more. Cupid’s Undie Run proceeds to go toward finding a cure for those affected by neurofibromatosis, a rare genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body and affects 1 in every 3,000 births.

The fundraising event donates 100% of the net proceeds to the Children’s Tumor Foundation, the world’s leader in neurofibromatosis research. Cupid’s is also partnered with Joe Boxer and Tito’s Handmade Vodka.

Party, run, and party some more

Cupid’s Undie Run is not limited to Chicago—the fun run series spans from coast to coast. Runners can show off their best undies from the warmer climates of Los Angeles and Phoenix to snowy Philadelphia and New York. You can also register as a virtual runner and run from anywhere in the world. Start a team, join a team, or run solo. Either way, you’re bound to make new friends!

Unlike bigger races that start in the morning, Cupid’s Undie Run starts at noon with drinking and dancing at Sluggers World Class Sports Bar in Wrigleyville. Get your heart rate going before you strip down, lace up, and head out at 2 p.m. to run about 1 mile. When you’re done, the party continues at Sluggers so you can warm up and celebrate that mad dash with more booze and dancing until 4 p.m. Registration for Chicago is open at $45 and increases to $50 on February 12.

How it started…

Cupid’s Fun Run had its start in 2010 when a group led by co-founders Brendan Hanrahan, Chad Leathers, and Bobby Gill ran through the chilly streets of D.C. to raise money for neurofibromatosis research. They ran in their undies to bare (almost) all in solidarity with those affected with neurofibromatosis, who can’t cover up their tumors.

How it’s going…

Since then, Cupid’s Charity was created and became a recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit, having raised over $21.7 million to date and bringing awareness of neurofibromatosis. The support, heart, and grit of 108,600 undie runners over 225 events across the country helped make this possible. Last year, Cupid’s raised over $3.5 million! Donations can be made in the name of a participant, a general donation, or a sponsorship.

Warmer Weather Vacations To Plan In 2022Alicia Likenon January 25, 2022 at 2:41 pm

With temperatures in the teens and snow in the forecast, there’s never been a better time to escape the Windy City! But planning a getaway can be daunting. That’s why we’ve rounded up some of the top warmer weather vacations that are only a short flight from Chicago. So you can spend less time traveling and more time soaking up the sun. Check out these hot spots to visit ASAP.

Scottsdale, Arizona – Flight time: 3 hrs 50 mins

Craving a little mountain skyline? Then you’ll fall head over heels for this southwest gem. Start your day off right at U.S. Egg (pro-tip: their omlettes rule). Next, put on your party pants and make your way downtown to historic locations like the Rusty Spur Saloon, Old Town Tavern, and The Grapevine Restaurant & Karaoke Bar. Don’t worry, we’ll make this one easy for you. I mean, we do have a site there after all!

Palm Springs, California – Flight time: 4 hrs 30 mins

Like any desert city, you’ll want to pack short sleeves for the day and hoodies at night! Head to Cheeky’s for delectable cinnamon rolls or a world-famous bacon flight. Then sip on festive rum-filled cocktails at the Bootlegger Tiki. And end your evening devouring organic, farm-to-table Provençal fare at Farm

Playa del Carmen, Mexico – Flight time: 3 hrs 30 mins

International travel doesn’t have to be hard. By staying at a luxury resort, you remove the hassle of renting a car, finding restaurants, and other touristy things. Plus, onsite COVID testing makes returning home easy. Look into Banyan Tree, Nizuc, or Unico Riveria Maya for the ultimate beach vacations.

Hollywood, Florida – Flight time: 2 hrs 56 mins

A short drive from the Ft. Lauderdale airport will get you to this sunny location! Be sure to cruise the Hollywood Boardwalk on the weekends for prime people-watching. Stop into Cafe Club for a hipster breakfast or lunch. And go Fins Up at Margaritaville restaurant with an iconic boat drink (warning: they’re strong!). Wrap up your day with a sunset dinner overlooking the water at GG’s

San Francisco, California – Flight time: 4 hrs

Home to the Pink Ladies featured in Full House (RIP Bob Saget), this city isn’t exactly tropical. But with mild temps and stunning vistas, we had to include it on our list! Pop by Ritual Coffee for a pour-over that’ll change your life. Grab lunch at Soulva for fast causal Greek epicness. And make dinner reservations at Hog Island Oyster Co. located inside the Ferry Building.

Austin, Texas – Flight time: 2 hrs 35 mins

Over the years, this popular city has grown into a tech hotspot with awesome eats. One rule: you gotta get your fill of the best BBQ at LeRoy and Lewis. Oh, and you’ll also want to explore the House of Curiosities (keep Austin weird) and catch a round of chicken sh*t bingo at The Little Longhorn Saloon (again, keep Austin weird). Fun fact, we have a site here, too!

Rumors of Chicago Bears hiring head coach before GM debunkedJordan Campbellon January 25, 2022 at 4:45 pm

The Chicago Bears have entered the third week of their search for the team’s next general manager and head coach as the team has lined up second round interviews with both general managerial candidates and head coaching candidates.

This week, the Bears are expected to meet with Kansas City Chiefs executive Ryan Poles, Tennessee Titans executive Monti Ossenfort, and New England Patriots executive Elliot Wolf for a second interview regarding their general manager vacancy. Concurrently, the Bears are also expected to meet with head coaching candidates Jim Caldwell, Matt Eberflus, and Dan Quinn for a second time this week.

As the Bears have begun the third week of their search process, criticism has emerged over how the team is conducting this search. Being that list of finalists for the Bears’ head coaching vacancy emerged prior to the Bears finalizing their first round interviews with prospective general manager candidates, it seemed likely that the team was going to hire a head coach prior to hiring a general manager. Such a move would signal the same mistake that the Bears made in 2015 when there was common belief that John Fox would be the head coach at the time that Ryan Pace was hired as the team’s general manager.

Despite the perception of the Bears’ search, 670 The Score’s Matt Spiegel reports that the Bears will indeed hire a general manager prior to hiring a head coach. Spiegel also confirmed that prospective general manager candidates have already met with prospective head coach candidates.

Have heard that the Bears will absolutely hire a GM first, before a head coach. And the GM will be involved in picking the coaching finalists, and eventual coach. Some GM candidates and coaching candidates are getting the opportunity to talk to each other in the process.

— M@ (@MattSpiegel670) January 25, 2022

Rumors of the Chicago Bears making a mistake by hiring a head coach before hiring general manager appear to have been debunked.

If history is any indicator, the Bears must hire their general manager before hiring their head coach. The last time that the Bears opted for a pre-arranged marriage, it was between Pace and Fox. Fox only lasted three years as the Bears’ head coach, and by the third year, it was clear that Pace was ready to move on from the veteran head coach as the general manager did not even include the coach in the 2017 Draft preparation process. Hiring the head coach prior to the general manager will only guarantee that the general manager will be able survive at least one head coach being that he wasn’t allowed to pick his desired candidate.

The idea of the prospective general manager candidates meeting with prospective head coach candidates is encouraging. Reason being that if the Chicago Bears Bears truly are going to hire a general manager prior to hiring the head coach, they will need to act fast in terms of hiring a head coach. The general manager already having spoken with a prospective head coach would only expedite that process.

81-year-old woman dies in fire in Avalon Park

Fire crews responded to a house fire in the 8200 block of South Cornell Avenue around 2 a.m. Tuesday.

An 81-year-old woman died in a house fire in Avalon Park early Tuesday after she tried to escape but collapsed near a door leading outside.

Fire crews found her on the kitchen floor of a home in the 8200 block of South Cornell Avenue, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said.

The woman had suffered severe burns and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she died, police said. Her name has not yet been released.

A neighbor on East End Avenue first spotted the fire around 2 a.m. and called 911, Langford said. It’s unclear how long the fire was burning before then.

With temperatures in the single digits, crews encountered one frozen hydrant but were able to access other hydrants that were flowing freely, Langford said.

Crews quickly spotted the woman and removed her, he said. She was in cardiac arrest and had third-degree burns. It appeared that the woman had been burned in another room before collapsing in the kitchen, Langford said.

She lived by herself and had a son who lives out of town, Langford said.

The fire may have started in the basement, Langford said, but investigators were waiting for water to subside before investigating further.

The home had no smoke detectors, he said.

8215 Cornell preliminary report indicates fire may have started in basement. No smoke detectors found. Victim found only a few feet from exit. Smoke alarm could have provided enough warning to allow safe escape. Are yours working? pic.twitter.com/t77BZDPNqZ

Since firing general manager Ryan Pace on Jan. 10, the Bears have interviewed at least 13 candidates to take his place. Tuesday, they moved into the second round of talks.

Since firing general manager Ryan Pace on Jan. 10, the Bears have interviewed at least 13 candidates to take his place. Tuesday, they moved into the second round of talks, interviewing the Chiefs’ Ryan Poles again, this time at Halas Hall.

The Bears also want to talk to the Titans’ Monti Ossenfort and the Patriots’ Eliot Wolf again, per NFL Network. The Colts’ Morocco Brown, who talked to the Bears’ five-person search committee Monday, is also considered a candidate.

More than two weeks since the firing, here’s a timeline of how we got to this point:

Jan. 12: The Bears talk to their first GM candidate, Browns vice president of player personnel Glenn Cook. He was a one-time Cubs draft pick — in the 46th round in 2009.

Jan. 13: Champ Kelly, the Bears’ assistant director of player development, and Browns vice president of football operations Kwesi Odofo-Mensah both interview for the job.

Jan. 14: Jeff Ireland, the Saints’ assistant GM and a former Bears ballboy whose uncle was a legendary Bears scout, interviews for the job.

Jan. 15: Titans director of player personnel Monti Ossenfort interviews.

Jan. 16: One day after the Bills’ first-round playoff win, assistant GM Joe Schoen interviews with the Bears.

Jan. 17: Colts assistant GM Ed Dodds interviews.

Jan. 18: Eliot Wolf, a Patriots executive and son of former Packers architect Ron Wolf, interviews for the job. His father praised him as ready for the job.

Jan. 19: Ran Carthon, the 49ers’ player personnel director, talks to the Bears about the vacancy. Dodds withdraws his name from consideration for the Bears job.

Jan. 20: Former Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie, who is now a Dolphins executive, meets with the Bears.

Jan. 21: Poles talks to the Bears for the first time, two days before his Chiefs defeat the Bills in the second round of the playoffs. The Giants hire Schoen to be their GM.

Jan. 24: The Bears interview two of the most qualified candidates in their search, Steelers vice president of football and business administration Omar Khan and Colts college scouting director Morocco Brown. Brown worked for the Bears as assistant pro personnel director from 2001-07.

Chicago Bulls rookie Ayo Dosunmu stays hot, has historic night in OKCBenjamin Hudyon January 25, 2022 at 3:00 pm

As of late, the Chicago Bulls have struggled mightily as they go through one of their worst stretches of games of the entire year (winners of 3 of their last 10). With many players out due to injury, one player keeping them afloat has been rookie Ayo Dosunmu. Ayo continued his hot stretch of games on Monday night, having a huge part in the Bulls win over the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Ayo, who is a graduate of Morgan Park high school in Chicago and a former player at the University of Illinois; has been a fan favorite all season long because of his hometown roots and his play on the court. Dosunmu continued his impressive rookie campaign by making history against Oklahoma City.

Ayo broke a 40 year-old Bulls rookie record by going 9 for his first 9 shot attempts on the floor, a record previously held by Orlando Brown. Dosunmu finished the game with 24 points, 8 assists, 5 rebounds, while shooting 71% from the field. Those are pretty impressive numbers for a rookie who was taken in the second round. He also added to his magical night by hitting a half court shot at the end of 3rd quarter as time expired

The Bulls are going to need Ayo Dosunmu big-time going forward.

Having Ayo Dosunmu play like this as only a rookie is huge for the Bulls as they go forward into the later half of the season. With all the injuries and diversity the Bulls have faced recently, its huge to have a player like Ayo step up while some of the bigger stars of the team are out. The Bulls were lucky to get Javonte Green and Zach Lavine back tonight, but they are still missing key players like Lonzo Ball, Alex Caruso, and Derrick Jones Jr. amongst others.

It also just goes to show how much of a true steal that Ayo was in this past draft. Ayo has been arguably a top 10 rookie this season, and is able to contribute big minutes for the Bulls. The Bulls truly got first round talent in the second round, and give credit to the front office for seeing the flashes in the kid out of U of I.

Most of all, it’s just a great story for the Chicago Bulls. To have a hometown kid like Ayo be one of the top pieces on a contending team in Chicago is something that the fans will always get behind. When you go to the United Center it’s crazy to see the amount of Ayo jerseys and shirts that the fans all have on already in his rookie season.

As the season progresses and we head towards the playoffs, it will be fun to continue to watch Ayo Dosunmu’ progression into a true NBA talent. He shows signs and flashes on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball that any NBA team would want. Ayo will have to continue to be one of the teams top players until we get back some help. It just goes to show, that the Bulls got a true steal in the hometown kid from Chicago.
