Blackhawks lose again to Avalanche after furious comeback falls short

The Blackhawks put forth three admirable performances against the Avalanche this month.

They lost all three.

A furious comeback attempt Friday — embodying their opponent’s name by unleashing 23 shots and four goals in the third period — fell just short in a chaotic 6-4 loss, squandering their last chance to avoid a season sweep against arguably the NHL’s best team.

“We’ve played some pretty good teams [this month],” Brandon Hagel said. “We’ve got to find a way to win. Nobody wants to just keep losing and say, ‘Oh, we played well, we played well.’ We still want to be in that playoff race, and we’re not too far behind. We need to string some games together, and these are the games we need to win.”

After nearly winning in regulation before being undone by Cale Makar’s wondrous overtime winner back on Jan. 4, then maintaining stout defense in a near-impossible venue in their 2-0 loss Monday, the Hawks displayed a whole new kind of rebuke to the Avalanche’s usual dominance Friday.

After falling behind 3-0 early in the third period, the Hawks pulled within one on three separate occasions — thanks to two goals from a vintage-looking Patrick Kane and two more from Hagel — only to have the Avalanche answer back each time.

“What [Colorado] wants is to create turnovers and go straight up, and they did that on us in the second period,” Erik Gustafsson said. “At the start of the third, we just said we’ve got to dump it in and go get it. And we did that. We pinched a lot with the ‘D,’ and had a high third guy, so we’ve got to keep going like that.”

With the crowd of 17,992 on its feet in the final minute, Hagel had three golden chances to complete his hat trick, likely force overtime and blow the roof off the arena, but Avs goalie Pavel Francouz stood tall.

All told, it was still one of the Hawks’ best offensive performances of the season, finishing with 65 shot attempts and 43 on goal.

“These guys have to buy into [our approach] every night,” interim coach Derek King said. “Some nights it’s on and off, on and off. But for the most part, I really do like their compete [level]. The biggest thing for us is we’re not quitting. Three months ago, two quick goals [against us] like that, their shoulders would’ve been down. But they stuck with it.”

Khaira closer

Hawks forward Jujhar Khaira — who has been out since Jan. 18 with a lower back injury — returned to practice during morning skate Friday, but he’s not quite ready yet to play.

“There’s no point in rushing it,” King said. “[If he] comes in the lineup, plays two shifts, gets hit or gives a hit, then he’s out and now we’re shorthanded. So we’ll make sure he gets a couple good solid practices here and then we’ll look at it again.”

Defenseman Riley Stillman, meanwhile, might miss another two to three weeks with his evidently serious left shoulder injury.

Wednesday meeting

The three most important people in the Hawks’ current leadership structure — chairman Rocky Wirtz, CEO Danny Wirtz and business president Jaime Faulkner — will speak to the “greater vision of the organization moving forward” at a “townhall-style event” at the United Center next Wednesday before the Hawks’ game against the Wild.

The Wirtzes will be making their first public comments since the sexual assault scandal investigation ended in October. Faulkner will make her first public comments since speaking to the Sun-Times in December 2020, shortly before her hiring.

Bulls’ Billy Donovan petitioning for Ayo Dosunmu in Rising Stars Game

Ayo Dosunmu doesn’t have the minutes of a Scottie Barnes, the scoring of a Cade Cunningham or the interior defensive impact of an Evan Mobley, but try telling his head coach that the second-round pick from Illinois is not one of the top rookies in this year’s class.

“I think he’s played as good as any rookie in this league,” the Bulls’ Billy Donovan said on Friday. “I’m not going to get into the talent or who’s better, who is more talented, who is having a better year, but from what I’ve seen I think we would all have to agree that if the draft took place today, he’s undoubtedly a first-round draft pick minimum.

“So we feel really fortunate that we could end up at that point and time selecting where we did to get a player like him, and I think he’s done an amazing job really all year long, but certainly with some of the guys we’ve had out with what he’s had to do absorbing minutes.”

Donovan would also like to see Dosunmu get a chance to take part in the All-Star Weekend’s Rising Stars Game, even with the new format.

Instead of Team World vs. Team USA, there will now be a pool of 12 NBA rookies, 12 NBA sophomores and four NBA G-League Ignite players, and the group will be broken into four teams to play a mini tournament.

Donovan is hoping that Dosunmu’s value as a defender, as well as his versatility to play either guard spot opens some eyes when it comes time to pick the rookie group for that game, but either way continued to be thrilled to have the former Morgan Park High School standout on his roster.

“A lot of times second-round draft picks don’t automatically play,” Donovan said. “Now I think two things: One, I think Ayo has really earned his way, so he’s on the floor because he’s earned it, and then obviously we’ve had Covid and different issues we’ve had to deal with and he’s stepped up, but I think you could probably tell right from the beginning people had an unbelievable amount of respect for him, even going back to training camp before we ever played a game.”

Dosunmu remained in the starting lineup for Lonzo Ball, and will likely continue to do so with Ball undergoing knee surgery Friday morning, and in that six-to-eight week window for a return.

“I think [Dosunmu] has done a great job for us and he deserves a lot of credit,” Donovan added. “And certainly consideration for that All-Star Game, that rookie/sophomore game.”

Captain speaking

By now the Zach LaVine video of the guard taking control of the team flight’s intercom system to announce that DeMar DeRozan had been named an All-Star starter has been seen by many.

Donovan loved the moment.

“It was great,” Donovan said. “[LaVine] flipped on the lights. I think it speaks to the bond and chemistry that those two guys have with one another. I’m personally really happy for DeMar. He has played incredibly well for us the entire year. Certainly provided great leadership and great play on the court. I think people got a chance to see his commitment to his teammates with what he did for Ayo and going to his jersey retirement [at Illinois]. It also speaks to Zach that he was just as happy for DeMar as well, which was great to see on the plane.”

Minute man

Javonte Green remained on a minutes limit, recently returning from a groin injury this last week, according to Donovan.

It was 23-25 minutes the first two games, and was bumped up to the 24-26 range against the Spurs. Donovan said that the plan is to move the minutes up “incrementally.”

76ers’ Embiid, once 50-1, now favorite to win MVPon January 29, 2022 at 1:33 am

print

Less than 2 weeks after being a 50-1 longshot to win NBA MVP, Philadelphia 76ers All-Star Joel Embiid is now the favorite (+260) at Caesars Sportsbook.

Embiid, listed at 50-1 on January 16, is in the midst of a 16-game stretch in which he is averaging 34 points and 10 rebounds per game. The Sixers big man vaulted former MVPs Stephen Curry (+300) and Giannis Antetokounmpo (+325) in the last few days.

Denver Nuggets All-NBA big man and last season’s MVP Nikola Jokic has the fourth-best odds at +400 while Memphis Grizzlies rising star Ja Morant is fifth at +1400.

Starting with preseason favorite Luka Doncic, Embiid is the fifth different player to be the favorite in the season’s first three months.

Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant became the favorite on January 16, just before suffering a knee injury and starting a shift in the MVP odds that has seen Curry and Giannis each hold the top spot this month. As of Friday night, Durant has the sixth-best odds at +3000.

Embiid emerged as the MVP favorite last season before a knee injury sidelined him for 10 games.

NBA issues second stat correction this weekon January 29, 2022 at 12:36 am

print

The NBA issued its second correction of the week Friday, after bettors spotted a stat-keeping omission in Thursday’s Minnesota TimberwolvesGolden State Warriors game.

Several bettors posted screenshots on social media of wagers on over 0.5 steals for Edwards against the Warriors and questioned a play early in the first quarter. On the play, Edwards intercepted a pass from Golden State’s Stephen Curry, who was being pressured by Karl Anthony-Towns near the sideline. Anthony-Towns was initially credited with the steal. On Friday, the NBA took away a steal from Anthony-Towns and credited it to Edwards.

It’s the second time this week the NBA issued a correction after bettors pointed out a stat-keeping error. In Monday’s Utah JazzPhoenix Suns game, Chris Paul was erroneously credited with an assist. On Tuesday, after bettors voiced frustration on social media, the NBA took the assist away from Paul and credited it to Bridges.

Sportsbooks like BetMGM and DraftKings, official betting partners of the NBA, typically settle bets based on the official box score released the day of the game. If the NBA changes a stat the next day, bets are not impacted.

FanDuel, however, was honoring Friday’s correction on the Edwards’ steal and paying out wagers based on the change. Bets that included under 0.5 steals for Edwards, initially graded as winners, were not changed, according to a FanDuel spokesperson.

Mentor says Bears coach Matt Eberflus ‘can handle the heat and the pressure’

Not long after he accepted the Bears’ head coaching job Thursday morning, Matt Eberflus called his mentor Gary Pinkel, the former Missouri coach. On the most important day of his professional life, Eberflus told Pinkel how much he meant to him.

It reminded Pinkel of the conversations he used to have with the coach who changed his own life, late Washington legend Don James. When he made the College Football Hall of Fame earlier this month, Pinkel called James’ widow and was so emotional that she had to be the one to comfort him.

Pinkel played for James and then coached under him at two stops. Eberflus did the same under Pinkel, playing his senior year for his first-time head coach at Toledo and then staying to coach under him. When Pinkel left for Missouri, Eberflus went too, becoming one of the nation’s youngest defensive coordinators at 30.

“It was a very emotional conversation …” Pinkel said. “I tend to see the same thing when [Eberflus] sits there and tells me some of the things he told me. It’s kinda overwhelming on both sides. I’m putting a sticker up for Don James because that’s where it all started. I’m ready to pass the baton on. Down the road here, Matt Eberflus might very well, possibly, be doing the same thing 10 years from now. It’s pretty exciting.”

But first, he’s got to coach his first game in the NFL. Eberflus, 51, has never been a head coach at any level, much less at the pinnacle of the sport. The Bears are betting that he grows into the role alongside 36-year-old general manager Ryan Poles, who was hired two days before the coach.

“I think he can handle the heat and the pressure,” Pinkel said. “Every head coach can say he handles pressure well. They’re lying — 60, 70 percent of them actually don’t cope with it. Eventually it doesn’t allow them to do their job. He will stay poised.”

When Pinkel accepted the Toledo job in 1991, he stopped by the Washington football office to say goodbye to James on the way to the airport. As he was leaving, he turned around and asked James if he had any advice.

James took his glasses off and stared at him coldly.

“He said, ‘When things get down — and, he said, it’s gonna really really get tough — you gotta focus every day on waking up and doing your job minute-by-minute,” Pinkel said. “‘You can’t let anything in. Because if you let anything in, you’re never gonna make it.’ …

“It was the greatest advice I’ve ever had in my life. You gotta be able to handle that part of it. I think [Eberflus] will do well.”

Why?

“There’s no question who the boss is — it doesn’t deviate,” Pinkel said. “But at the end of the day he’s a good person that cares about people. … You want players to get committed? They’re not going to get committed until they know you care about them. Not gonna happen. That’s the way he will be, because that’s the way he is with people. I don’t care who it is, he’s going to demand excellence.”

Pinkel envisions Eberflus combining college and pro tenets — he was a linebackers coach for the Browns and Cowboys before spending the last four years as the Colts defensive coordinator — to “create his environment of commitment and work ethic and being a great teammate.” Andy Reid, he said, has established that kind of culture in Kansas City.

Eberflus will borrow from the coaches he’s played and coached under: Pinkel, the Cowboys’ Jason Garrett, the Browns’ Eric Mangini, the Colts’ Frank Reich and even Nick Saban, who coached him his junior year at Toledo.

Pinkel said he noticed something special about Eberflus in his first year as Toledo’s head coach. Before his senior year, Eberflus told Pinkel he might want to be a college coach one day. The former walk-on and Toledo native was the best player on the Rockets that season — he was voted captain and won team MVP — and then jumped into coaching. He was a Toledo student assistant and a graduate assistant for a year apiece, and joined the Rockets full-time in 1994.

“And as he matured more,” Pinkel said, “it was really interesting to see him grow.”

Eberflus was intense as a player and has that streak as a coach, too.

“He has what you have to have,” he said. “I believed in him.”

Pinkel knows defensive-minded coaches need help in the modern NFL, though.

“The offensive staff is going to be really important,” Pinkel said. “The coordinator, quarterbacks coach, offensive line coach — those guys are key, key people. I think he understands that.

“A lot more offensive coordinators get hired [as head coaches] in this business — we all know why — than defensive coordinators. I think he’s excited by the plan that he has to get the right people to the right spots. I think that’s critically important.”

Pinkel thinks he’s ready. We’ll find out soon enough.

“He’s just really excited for this,” Pinkel said. “He’s been waiting for so long to have this opportunity.”

Chicago Bears have target on rival coach Luke Getsy for OCJordan Campbellon January 28, 2022 at 10:11 pm

The Chicago Bears will have a press conference on Monday to formally introduce former Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus as their new head coach, and former Kanas City Chiefs executive Ryan Poles as their new general manager. In the meantime, Eberflus and Poles are attempting to complete the team’s revamped coaching staff.

On Friday morning, it was reported that Poles met with Houston Texans’ quarterback coach Pep Hamilton. Hamilton was rumored to be the desired offensive coordinator had the Bears named former Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell as their new head coach. The Bears were believed to be excited over the plan that Caldwell had for second-year quarterback Justin Fields. Even without Caldwell in the fold, the Bears may be looking to utilize that plan.

While Hamilton was believed to be the first interview that the Bears head regarding their offensive coordinator position, all eyes will be on the interview that Eberflus has on Saturday. Eberflus is scheduled to meet with Green Bay Packers’ passing game coordinator Luke Getsy.

Getsy has been popular within the coaching cycle over the past 24 hours after former Packers’ offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett became the head coach of the Denver Broncos. There was an expectation that Getsy would either join Hackett’s staff or be elevated to the offensive coordinator position with the Packers but the Bears are attempting to throw a wrench in those plans. In fact, the Bears have prioritized the hiring of Getsy and Tom Silverstone reports that there is an offer on the table.

According to a source, #Packers QBs coach/passing game coordinator has an offer to become offensive coordinator under new #Bears coach Matt Eberflus. It’s his job if he wants, a source said. Benefit over GB is that he could call plays.

— Tom Silverstein (@TomSilverstein) January 28, 2022

The Packers would be unable to block the Bears from hiring Getsy as the move would serve as a promotion. While Getsy would likely hold the offensive coordinator position with the Packers, he would not be the play-caller as that responsibility would remain with head coach Matt LaFleur. With the Bears, Getsy would have full control of the offense.

The Chicago Bears may look to their rival, the Green Bay Packers, in finding and offensive coordinator to lead the offense under head coach Matt Eberflus.

As is the case with an offensive coaches on a team with an elite quarterback, in this case Aaron Rodgers, there is a question as to whether the offensive success is attributed to the quarterback or the offensive coaching staff. However, with Getsy, he has already received an endorsement from Rodgers. During a conversation with the Clarion Ledger in 2018, Getsy explained the relationship between he and Rodgers.

“I really enjoyed my time with [Rodgers]. I was truly lucky and truly blessed to have an open dialogue with him,” Getsy said. “We grew close and it truly was a blessing to be where I was. He’s a great teammate, a great friend and he is a really good man. He truly is.

“I think he is reserved enough that people may think he kind of turns people off, but, no, he’s energetic, he’s enthusiastic, he’s charismatic, he’s hilarious. He’s got a lot going for him.”

Getsy joining the Bears’ coaching staff would serve two purposes for the team. The first, and most, important purpose is that the Bears would have a young and emerging offensive mind in Getsy to oversee the development of Fields and evolution of the team’s offense. The other purpose serves more of a long-term interest for the Bears as a hiring of Getsy may be a precursor to Rodgers leaving the Packers this off-season.
