This weekend, Chicago Bears fans are spending another consecutive weekend watching playoff football without their hometown team.

One of these days, though, the Bears will be back playing late-January and early-February football. Hopefully sooner than later, but for now, we sit back and watch.

A common factor in the four teams left this Championship Weekend is that each squad has at least one top-tier wide receiver. The hottest names in football this weekend include guys like Ja’Marr Chase, Deebo Samuel, Cooper Kupp, Tyreek Hill, and others.

For the Bears to get back to the top, it is pretty clear: this team needs additional talent at the wide receiver position. When free agency kicks off, the Bears will be saying goodbye to Allen Robinson and immediately looking for a replacement to start next to Darnell Mooney.

Championship Weekend has a future few free agent wide receivers the Chicago Bears could choose to pursue.

Aside from those four names listed above, this weekend will feature even more talent at the receiver position — and some of them could be looking for a new team after this season is over.

The Bears will be looking at a pretty thin receiver room, with Mooney being the only major name under contract for 2022. Chicago will be facing their own free agent decisions with guys like Jakeem Grant, Damiere Byrd and Marquise Goodwin.

It is likely the Bears bring at least one of those guys back, and hopefully it’s Grant. After an All Pro season as a return specialist, Grant also proved he could be a weapon on offense when given the opportunity.

Beyond Mooney and Grant, though, the Bears would have their work cut out for them to fill in the gaps. Chicago would still need major work done at the receiver position. So, what about one of these options playing this weekend?

Chicago Bears must boost secondary under Matt EberflusPatrick Sheldonon January 30, 2022 at 1:00 pm

A glaring weakness of the Chicago Bears last season was their secondary. After allowing Kyle Fuller and Buster Skrine to move on, they entered the 2021 season with a clear void in the boundary corner position as well as nickel corner.

As the season went on, instability came to define the position group. A combination of injuries and personnel decisions (some very questionable ones at times) significantly undermined the unit’s chances of success and led to a paltry number of interceptions.

In fact, the entire secondary only manage six interceptions in 2021, five of which came from the safety group. Only one of the team’s total came from the cornerback position, which matched the total number of interceptions from the defensive end position.

Needless to say, the team will need to improve in the secondary under new head coach Matt Eberflus who places a strong emphasis on turning the ball over.

Last season the Indianapolis Colts defense, led by Eberflus who served as their defensive coordinator, registered 19 total interceptions, eight of which came from their cornerbacks.

No doubt the skill of their unit opted a large part in that but so did the sheer number of opportunities. The Colts defense lined up in nickel formation — meaning five total defensive backs — second-most in the league at 77.2 percent. For the non-math majors like me, the Colts were in nickel (not their base defense) more than three-quarters of the time.

Bears defense vs. Colts defense 2021:

Cover 2 %:

– Bears: 8.7% (19th)
– Colts: 15.2% (9th)

Mostly zone concepts for both otherwise, similar rates.

4-3 %:

– Bears: 3.2% (20th)
– Colts: 21.4% (8th)

Colts in nickel (4-2-5) at second-highest rate in NFL (77.2%)

— Brad Spielberger, Esq. (@PFF_Brad) January 27, 2022

It goes without saying that solidifying the nickel position, as well as depth across the secondary, will be critical this offseason.

As of now, there are only seven cornerbacks under contract for the 2022 season. They are, Jaylon Johnson, Duke Shelley, Kindle Vildor, Bopete Keyes, Thomas Graham Jr., Lamar Jackson, and Michael Joseph.

Jaylon Johnson is a lead-pipe lock to start next year, but beyond that, the entire position group is up for grabs. Now you’d think Graham has a very good chance to earn himself a starting spot based on his performance in the last few games of the season, but he will have to prove he can do that for a sustained period of time to earn the trust of the new coaching staff. Vildor got an infinite number of chances, very possibly because he was a draft pick of the previous regime, as was Duke Shelley. New general manager Ryan Poles will not be encumbered by sentimentality as he did not select either player.

As you can see, the Bears — in particular Poles — will have their work cut out for them to remake the secondary, and could have a number of spots to fill. One approach could be to bring back a player from the 2021 roster who may not be under contract for 2022. Two players that fit that description who I believe are worth bringing back are Marqui Christian and Deon Bush. Christian, although listed as a safety, has the versatility to play the nickel position as well and even line up on the boundary if necessary. I believe Christian was in part, a victim of the high turnover in the secondary as the coaching staff tried to find a combination they liked. With some stability, Christian could certainly be a major contributor to the secondary.

Speaking of major contributors, there may not have been a greater super-utility player on the Bears than Bush. He played very well when called upon to play safety, and is a special teams dynamo. He does whatever the team asks, and his versatility, as with Christian, can go a long way in filling multiple needs with as few players as possible.

Next:5 mistakes Eberflus must avoid

This will be an interesting and challenging offseason for the Bears new staff, and I think I speak for everyone when I say we are anxiously awaiting to see how it all turns out.

One reason Tom Brady retiring low-key helps the Chicago BearsRyan Heckmanon January 29, 2022 at 8:17 pm

Fortunes may be shifting in the NFC as we speak. Tom Brady is officially retiring from the NFL after 22 seasons, while the Chicago Bears look to be headed in a brighter, newer direction.

The Bucs got what they wanted out of Brady, and he from them. Brady won a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay last year, beating Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Now, the NFC likely has one-less playoff team to worry about — opening the door for the Bears.

But, that’s not the immediate reason this retirement affects a team like Chicago. With Brady retiring, that means there will be some significant offensive free agents who may choose to sign elsewhere.

With Tom Brady retiring, the Chicago Bears now have a much greater shot at signing a free agent like Chris Godwin.

One of Brady’s go-to receivers for the past two seasons has been Chris Godwin. Along with Mike Evans, Godwin has been as dependable as they come. The duo may be the most prolific pairing of receivers Brady has ever worked with. Sure, Randy Moss on his own was better, no doubt.

But, now the Bucs might have a difficult time trying to bring Godwin back for future seasons. Last season, Godwin played under the franchise tag. Unfortunately, his season ended with an ACL tear late in the year. He will enter free agency in March and, quite possibly, may end up making less money than he would have pre-injury.

Maybe, the injury doesn’t mean a whole lot, though. It didn’t mean much when Allen Robinson endured the same exact injury. The Bears still signed him to a fairly rich contract four years ago.

Even if the Bucs offered Godwin a multi-year deal, he would have a whole lot of uncertainty at the quarterback position without Brady.

In Chicago, though, Godwin would know exactly who is leading the team under center. It’s Justin Fields’ team — and a receiver like Godwin would be the perfect addition for the second-year quarterback.

Over the past three seasons with Tampa, specifically, Godwin has broken out as one of the better receivers in football. The 25-year-old has amassed 249 receptions for 3,276 yards and 21 touchdowns during that span.

Godwin, alongside Darnell Mooney, would instantly give Fields a top-10 duo in football.

It’s not just Godwin who might choose to sign with another team, though. Tampa has a couple other key free agents who could help the Bears.

Center Ryan Jensen and tight end O.J. Howard are both unrestricted free agents as well, and both would be tremendous additions to the Bears.

Without Brady, the Bucs are going to have a difficult time bringing back some of their top offensive free agents. Their direction is now muddled, while the Bears are establishing a clear vision under new general manager Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus.
