HOF coach Bill Fitch, champ with Celts, dies at 89on February 3, 2022 at 7:21 pm

Legendary Hall of Fame coach Bill Fitch, who coached some of the NBA’s biggest names and helped guide Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics to an NBA championship in 1981, died at the age of 89 on Wednesday.

Fitch, a two-time NBA Coach of the Year, was named to the Top 10 Coaches of All-Time list when the NBA celebrated its 50 greatest players during the league’s 50th anniversary. Fitch was 10th all-time in wins among NBA coaches until Doc Rivers passed him in December of 2020.

The NBA announced the passing of the Fitch on Thursday.

“The NBA mourns the passing of Hall of Fame coach Bill Fitch, an NBA champion with the Boston Celtics and a two-time Coach of the Year,” the league posted on Twitter. “Bill served 25 seasons as an NBA head coach and mentored countless players and coaches. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends.”

During his 25 years as an NBA head coach, Fitch helped turn around several franchises. He coached the Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics, Houston Rockets, New Jersey Nets and LA Clippers.

He began his NBA career as the first head coach of the expansion Cavaliers in 1970, guiding them to the playoffs three times after winning just 15 games in their inaugural season. He earned his first NBA Coach of the Year honor in 1975-76, guiding the “Miracle of Richfield” team to 49 wins and the Eastern Conference Finals.

Fitch was named Celtics head coach in 1979-80, just after Boston had drafted its latest franchise star in Bird. In their first season together, Fitch, Bird and the Celtics went 61-21 and reached the Eastern Conference Finals, resulting in his second NBA Coach of the Year honor.

“Fitch’s deep knowledge of the game, toughness, and dry wit made him a perfect fit for Boston and the Celtics,” the Celtics said in a statement Thursday. “Fitch had already built a reputation as a turnaround artist, and his ability to get the best out of his players paid immediate dividends as Fitch orchestrated what was at the time the best turnaround in NBA history, vaulting to a 61-21 record. … The Celtics family mourns his loss as we celebrate his legacy.”

After an offseason that yielded Robert Parish and rookie Kevin McHale, Fitch guided the Celtics to 62 wins, beating the Rockets in the 1981 NBA Finals for Bird’s first championship and Fitch’s only title.

“Bill was a complicated, Vince Lombardi-type guy who didn’t give a damn about the opposition and always made us believe,” former Celtics forward Cedric Maxwell told the Boston Globe on Thursday. “He was Kevin Garnett before Kevin Garnett. Kevin always said it was us against them, and with Bill Fitch it was us against them.”

After winning 61, 62, 63 and 56 games in his four seasons with the Celtics, Fitch joined the Rockets in 1983-84. Houston had won just 14 games the season before but drafted Ralph Sampson first overall in the 1983 draft. Fitch guided Sampson and Hakeem Olajuwon to the NBA Finals in 1985-86, losing to the Celtics.

Fitch wasn’t done helping turn around franchises. He joined the Nets and won just 17 games in his first season in 1989-90, but he led a group that included Kenny Anderson, Derrick Coleman and Drazen Petrovic to 40 wins and the 1992 playoffs.

Fitch’s final NBA stop was with the Clippers. He won 17 games in his first season with the franchise in 1994-95 but helped the team reach the playoffs after winning 36 games in 1996-97.

Born in 1932, the Iowa native led his teams to the NBA playoffs 13 times and finished with a 944-1,106 record during his NBA coaching career. Known to some as “Captain Video” for his love of studying game tape, Fitch coached in college at Minnesota, Bowling Green, North Dakota — where he coached Phil Jackson — and his alma mater Coe College.

NBA unveils redesigned Kobe Bryant Trophyon February 3, 2022 at 7:21 pm

The NBA unveiled a redesigned Kobe Bryant Trophy — awarded to the All-Star Game’s Most Valuable Player — on Thursday afternoon.

The league revealed the trophy two weeks ahead of the NBA All-Star Game, which will take place Feb. 20 in Cleveland.

The trophy, which was renamed after Bryant in the wake of his death two years ago, has a base with four levels on top of it and was created by artist Victor Solomon.

It has been given several elements to incorporate accomplishments from throughout Bryant’s legendary 20-year NBA career, including:

o An eight-sided base, representing the No. 8 jersey Bryant wore for the first half of his career. The base is 2 inches tall, referencing his 2002 All-Star Game MVP, and has 18 stars to represent his 18 All-Star selections.

o The first level brings the height up to 7 inches tall, referencing his 2007 All-Star Game MVP, and has 24 stars to represent both the number of All-Stars and No. 24, which he wore over the second half of his career.

o The second level makes it 9 inches tall, referencing his 2009 All-Star Game MVP, and has 10 stars representing both the 10 starters in the game and Bryant’s No. 10 Team USA jersey.

o The third level gets it to 11 inches tall, referencing his 2011 All-Star Game MVP, and has five stars representing his five NBA titles with the Los Angeles Lakers.

o A 2-inch fourth level, representing his two NBA Finals MVP awards, has a single star for Bryant being named the NBA MVP in 2008.

The NBA and Solomon also released their remodeled versions of the rest of the trophies handed out over All-Star Weekend, including: the celebrity game MVP; the Rising Stars Challenge MVP; the clutch challenge, a new shooting competition; and trophies for winning the skills challenge, dunk contest and 3-point contest.

All-Star Weekend will take place Feb. 18-20 in Cleveland. The starters for this year’s game were announced last week, and the reserves from both conferences will be announced Thursday night on TNT.

LeBron James and Kevin Durant, who are the two All-Star team captains for a second consecutive season, will then draft their respective All-Star teams next week.

ESPN to have all-woman crew for Warriors-Jazzon February 3, 2022 at 4:26 pm

Beth Mowins made ESPN history in 2017 when she was the first woman to call a “Monday Night Football” game. She will again be part of a network first when ESPN produces an NBA game announced and directed by all women.

Mowins will work the Golden State WarriorsUtah Jazz game with analyst Doris Burke and reporter Lisa Salters on Wednesday (10 p.m. ET, ESPN). In addition, 33 other women will handle production roles on site in Salt Lake City and in the control room from ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut.

“I think it’s exciting to kind of celebrate,” Mowins said. “There are a lot of the women that have been around the league for a while, and then others like me that are kind of new to it.”

Mowins said she believes the time is coming when having a game called and produced by a majority crew of women will be routine.

“I think it’s important to still celebrate some of these big milestones, but I really do believe we’re getting closer to the day where it won’t be such a big deal and it will be very natural and very comfortable,” Mowins said.

Mowins has been with ESPN since 1994. She has mostly worked on college football, basketball and the Women’s College World Series, but started calling NBA games this season. Burke is one of ESPN’s top NBA analysts and has worked the last two NBA Finals on ESPN Radio. Salters will be the lead sideline reporter for ABC’s coverage of the NBA Finals.

“To work alongside these women and see the depth of talent we have in a variety of roles on this NBA property is incredibly rewarding,” coordinating producer Sara Gaiero said. “Each of these women make regular, valuable contributions to our NBA productions. I am so excited to watch them do what they do best — document an NBA game at the highest level.”

The Chicago Blackhawks don’t deserve Marc-Andre FleuryVincent Pariseon February 3, 2022 at 2:00 pm

The Chicago Blackhawks started the night with a very bad look. Rocky Wirtz was asked a question at a Town Hall meeting about Kyle Beach that he shoved to the side and freaked out over. People want to know what the team is doing to make sure that this doesn’t happen to a future player and he really messed up an opportunity to show that the team is moving forward.

Wirtz should be ashamed of himself. This was as bad of a look for him and his family as this franchise tries to be better. It really makes it seem like they don’t care and it is just ugly to listen to.

Someone like Marc-Andre Fleury doesn’t deserve to be a part of this. He is an incredible human being that is well known and liked across the league. They are horrid off the ice right now and they are also very bad on the ice.

The team in front of Fleury plays like garbage on a nightly basis. It reached a boiling point on Wednesday night against the Minnesota Wild. They were very soft in front of him and let the Wild control play the entire night. As a result, they were blown out 5-0 at home.

The Chicago Blackhawks don’t deserve to have Marc-Andre Fleury on their team.

Not a single goal that Fleury gave up was his fault. The first goal was a power-play goal in which the Wild did a good job passing the puck with the man advantage before taking advantage of a very nice goalie screen.

The second goal was a goal in which Mats Zuccarello was allowed to stand alone in front of Fleury and accept a pass from Jordan Greenway behind the net. Fleury had no chance as the Hawks were just too easy to play against on this play.

On the third goal, Zuccarello made another great play to deke Connor Murphy off his skates and make an amazing pass to Kirill Kaprizov who wouldn’t miss. Seeing two players as good as Zuccarello and Kaprizov basically do what they want in the offensive zone is incredibly bad.

For the fourth goal, a nice play was made by Matt Boldy to take advantage of some bad coverage. As a result, Kevin Fiala was able to accept a pass that sprung him on a breakaway where he would score to make it 4-0. The rest of the game was a formality from that point on.

The fifth goal was the worst of them all. The Blackhawks were so soft on the puck that before the announcement of Fiala’s goal was finished, the Wild were able to take advantage. A rolling puck was never able to clear the zone and five Blackhawks just watched it make its way to Nico Sturm’s stick who would bury it.

This goal was one that cause Marc-Andre Fleury to slam his stick and leave the ice. Collin Delia came in to relieve him of his duties as Fleury had a mini-meltdown in the tunnel. This is exactly what Marc-Andre Fleury doesn’t deserve.

Between the off-ice issues along with the bad play on the ice, this team is no fun to play for. There are plenty of teams that need Fleury and would give up something for him. He has never missed the playoffs in his NHL career so the Hawks really should do him a solid and just move on.
