Sources: Bulls’ LaVine to see specialist for kneeon February 13, 2022 at 4:21 pm

Chicago Bulls All-Star guard Zach LaVine is traveling to Los Angeles to get further evaluation on his left knee but still hopes to participate in next Sunday’s All-Star Game, sources told ESPN.

LaVine has been experiencing discomfort in the knee for several weeks, and although a January MRI showed no structural damage, there’s certainly a level of concern within the organization, sources said.

LaVine was chosen to the second All-Star Game in his career and is averaging 24.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.5 assists so far this season. LaVine and Bulls teammate (and fellow All-Star) DeMar DeRozan have been the league’s highest-scoring team duo this season, averaging 52.3 points, according to ESPN’s Stats & Information.

LaVine appeared to struggle through Friday’s victory over Minnesota, shooting 5-of-14 and noticeably wincing on the floor. LaVine sat out Saturday’s victory over Oklahoma City, and he missed consecutive games against Indiana and Philadelphia on Feb. 4 and 6. He will miss games on Monday and Wednesday ahead of the All-Star break, sources said.

The Bulls are withstanding numerous injuries to the backcourt this season, including Lonzo Ball (meniscus tear) and Alex Caruso (fractured wrist), who are out several weeks after undergoing surgery. The team also lost forward Patrick Williams to a wrist injury early in the season, although he’s expected to return this year.

Through it all, the Bulls are 36-21, one game behind first-place Miami in the Eastern Conference standings.

ESPN NBA reporter Jamal Collier contributed to this report.

Has Joe Burrow raised expectations for Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields?Todd Welteron February 13, 2022 at 3:44 pm

Joe Burrow might be on top of the football world but in Week 2 he was shaking off three interceptions in a loss to the Chicago Bears. It was Justin Fields who made a key run late in the game to seal the 20-17 victory.

How things have changed since September 19th, 2021 at Soldier Field.

The Chicago Bears completed a disappointing 2021 season. They finished 6-11, then fired head coach Matt Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace.

Fields finished his rookie campaign with 1870 passing yards, seven touchdown passes, and 10 interceptions.

The Cincinnati Bengals won the AFC North. Burrow has the Bengals in the franchise’s third Super Bowl appearance.

Talk about a turn-around for a downtrodden franchise.

Cincinnati finished 4-10-1 in 2020. Burrow’s rookie year ended with a horrific knee injury. He came back in his second season to throw for 4611 yards, 34 touchdowns, and 14 picks.

Burrow’s leap from year one to year two may have raised the stakes for all quarterbacks entering their second year like Chicago Bears young buck Justin Fields.

Kansas Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson’s great sophomore campaigns already raised expectations on second-year quarterbacks. Now there is Burrow taking his team to a Super Bowl to add even more pressure.

In many ways, that is unfair to Fields. He will be playing for a new coaching staff. Also, Nagy’s coaching this season did not do much in terms of grooming Fields as a great quarterback.

You will still get those fans and pundits that will expect any of these 2021 first-round pick quarterbacks to produce like Burrow next season. Especially Fields, who has some parallels with Burrow.

Both played in the College Football Playoff Championship game-Burrow won his game, while Fields lost. Both were questionable as to whether their college success would translate well to the NFL game. Both played their rookie seasons behind bad offensive lines–Burrow is still playing behind a poor offensive line.

Yet, Burrow is one victory away from winning a Lombardi trophy.

It would be great if Fields could elevate his game next season and lead the Chicago Bears to the Super Bowl. He probably won’t have the same second-year situation Burrow had this season.

Fields is going to be entering next season with probably a whole new wide receiver and tight end corps. Darnell Mooney and Cole Kmet are the only players under contract expected to return who caught a pass from Fields. Dazz Newsome is the only other receiver currently under contract with a chance to make the roster.

Unless the Chicago Bears do an about-face and re-sign Allen Robinson, Fields will have to build chemistry with at least four new receiving targets.

Burrow already had thrown passes to Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd last season. Then the Bengals added his former LSU teammate Ja’Marr Chase in the draft.

While Burrow was out with his knee injury, he was still able to study more and more of the offense he currently operates. Fields will have to learn a whole new offense and one that will be opposite from Nagy’s offense.

The good thing is Fields’ new offensive coordinator is Luke Getsy, who is from the Kyle Shahanen, Sean McVay, and Matt LaFleur coaching tree. Burrow’s head coach and offensive guru, Zac Taylor, comes from that same coaching chain.

Fields gets a chance to play in a quarterback-friendly offense but it usually takes a season or two for that offense to get rolling.

Plus, Fields has a few more weaknesses he has to clean up before he is ready to guide a team to a Super Bowl. He has to get rid of the ball quicker. He has to cut down on his fumbles. He still has to get better at reading defenses, understanding his line protections, and be comfortable with the difference between NFL open and college open when it comes to throwing to his receivers.

Thankfully, the Chicago Bears appear to have put together a better coaching staff than he had last season to help clean up those weaknesses.

Instead of expecting a Burrow-like second-year leap, a better hope is he plays somewhere between like Jalen Hurts’ or Josh Allen’s second season.

Hurts was not perfect this season but he played well enough to help get the Philadelphia Eagles into the playoffs. Allen took a better leap than Hurts in his second season, but still not enough to get the Buffalo Bills to the Super Bowl.

The hope is Fields grows into the quarterback we saw in the second half against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but it may take time. It probably means not going to the Super Bowl in year two like what Burrow accomplished.

A World’s Fair For Chicago?

A World’s Fair For Chicago?

I know it’s a crazy idea but…

At the tail end of the 19th century Chicago picked itself up from the ashes of a devastating fire and proudly invited the world to pay a visit to the Columbian Exposition in what is now Jackson Park. If you ask me, it’s time to think about doing it again.

The fate of our cities is up for grabs.  Covid and the internet technology have created incentives that pull us apart.  Empty office buildings and shuttered businesses are the norm. What comes next, for Chicago and for all the cities of the world?  That’s exactly the question a World’s Fair could address.

There are a myriad of reasons that World’s Fairs have gone out of fashion over the last century, but the most obvious is money. Events like this have traditionally been money losers.

But, on the other hand- it seems obvious that bringing people to see Chicago is good forChicago.  To steal a phrase from the movie “Jerry Maguire”,  Chicago in the summer is a city that has you at hello. It’s a city to fall in love with. But you’ve got to see it to believe it.

I’m one of those who thinks our newly minted slogan “Chicago Not in Chicago” is on the wrong track. It may grab us a place in the minds of others, but better to go for their hearts. The best way to get people to fall in love with Chicago is draw them to Buckingham Fountain, where they will surely look around in awe and say to themselves, as so many have, “Wow! I didn’t realize what a beautiful place this is.”

The evolution of cities and their place in the story of civilization is a mega-topic and an unfolding story.  History has placed us at an inflection point. A world’s fair could be a forum that invites creative contributions to that story, and in the process serves as akick starter for the next stages in Chicago’s story-a grand project that can help us all in our return from the virtual to the real.

Predicting the winner of an outstanding Super Bowl LIVVincent Pariseon February 13, 2022 at 1:00 pm

The Chicago Bears are going to be watching the Super Bowl from home once again. They are a long way away from being a team that makes a deep run but a quick turnaround could also be on the horizon thanks to the development of Justin Fields. We will see.

Super Bowl LIV is going to be a game played between two teams that can teach the Bears a lesson. For the Los Angeles Rams, you could say that the Bears could have been just like them. Instead of trying with Mitch Trubisky, they could have evaluated things better and moved on quicker just like LA did with the Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford trade.

Then there are the Cincinnati Bengals. They were a very bad team in 2019 and 2020 before becoming a legit Super Bowl threat in 2021. That is because of the fact that they drafted Joe Burrow. The Bears have a similar situation with Justin Fields and they hope they can have a similar result.

When it comes to predicting the outcome of the game, it is incredibly difficult because of the fact that each team has shown signs of explosiveness. With that in mind, there is one fact about each team that just can’t be ignored.

Super Bowl LVI is certainly loaded with talent on every side of the football.

The Bengals have some serious issues with their offensive line. Burrow was sacked nine times by the Tennessee Titans and they still managed to win. The difference is that Matthew Stafford will be able to take advantage a lot more than Ryan Tannehill.

It is also fair to say that the Rams’ defensive line is a lot better than the Titans. With guys like Aaron Donald, Leonard Floyd, and Von Miller amongst others in the mix, Burrow might have a really long game running away from these guys. It feels like that is going to be the difference.

As mentioned before, if the Rams do get to Burrow with regularity, they should be able to take advantage a lot more than the Titans did. Stafford should have a fun game throwing to Odell Beckham Jr. and Cooper Kupp to the point where they will put a lot of points on the board.

For that reason, the Rams are going to win this game. It might be close early but Los Angeles is going to be able to pull away. A 35-14 victory for the Rams is my locked-in prediction. It would be Stafford’s first Super Bowl and it would come just one season after leaving Detroit. The Rams pushed all of their chips in and now is their time to get it done.

Calls of morning birds

Calls of morning birds

I heard a bird calling, two notes, bright and clear in the early morning light. TWEE, twee. What could it be?

Thanks to Cornell Media Lab and All About Birds, I was able to identify the bird call–It is the call of the male black-capped chickadee! You can learn more about chickadees, and hear what their calls sound like here

And, there he is, now, under the eaves of the house next door.

Chickadees are more winter colored than the little brown sparrows that live around here. They are light gray and white, with a black cap and throat.

And here are the sparrows, too, all puffed up in the cold, hopping on the roof, chirping at my window. They blend in perfectly with the brown ground, after the snow has melted.

You can read more about sparrows here.

They are our companions through winter, even as we dream of spring.

And here’s a mourning dove!

Years ago, one bright and sunny January morning, there was a conference of mourning doves on the mulberry tree out by the alley. I counted 18 of them in one tree. I had never seen so many before! I have never seen so many since.

Cotton Mather: Puritan Cleric With Blood on His Hands

Today’s the birthday of Cotton Mather

Whom ‘Satan and Sinners’ whipped into a lather.

His glory’s been dimmed in our history’s files

For never condemning the Salem Witch Trials.

10 Best Places to Get Breakfast & Brunch in Logan SquareJulie Caion February 11, 2022 at 2:56 pm

As one of Chicago’s most popping hoods with diverse art, music, community, and culture, it’s no surprise you’ll also find great grub in Logan Square. A good breakfast or brunch always starts the day off right and Logan Square is chock-full of delicious options — so many, in fact, that it would take you until dinner time to choose where to go. So we did the grunt work for you and narrowed it down to the 10 best places for breakfast & brunch in Logan Square. Tell me: are you team omelette or team egg benedict?

2333 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60647

The Chicago Diner is one of the city’s most popular vegan-vegetarian eateries. It first opened in Lakeview in 1983 at the disbelief of many who thought the concept itself was bizarre. In the style of a classic diner with vintage ads, neon lights, and comfort food, the meatless menu was what confounded folks, but naysayers be damned as the diner grew to be popular and successful. In fact, the Chicago Diner expanded into Logan Square with its second location, which features a full bar with nine taps.
