Chicago Bulls drop tough one to Memphis, fall to 2nd in EastAnish Puligillaon February 27, 2022 at 1:59 pm

The Chicago Bulls entered action Saturday night on top of the Eastern Conference and riding a 6 game winning streak. DeMar DeRozan had two streaks going, one of consecutive 30 point games, and another of 35+ point games on greater than 50% shooting. Unfortunately, against Memphis, historically DeMar’s toughest opponent, the latter streak came to an end at 8 games – a new NBA record.

DeMar started cold, as did most of the Bulls, going 0-7 from the floor before finishing 10 of 29 for the game with 31 points. Much like Toronto, the Grizzlies are a team built on their length and physical presence inside. They lead the league in offensive rebounding and from the jump, it was clear their ability to get second-chance points would be a huge factor in this game. Steven Adams had a double-double by the halfway point of the second quarter.

For much of the game, Zach LaVine was the one who kept the Bulls in striking distance with his play while the team around him struggled to find their groove. Then in the fourth quarter, they found something defensively that was able to slow down Ja Morant, who had been going absolutely crazy until that point – ultimately ending with a new career-high of 46 points.

Recently, much of the talk has been about DeMar DeRozan doing Jordan-esque things in the house that Jordan built, but on Saturday night, it was Ja who transported Bulls fans back to 2010 with his play so reminiscent of Derrick Rose’s early MVP years.

The Bulls came back in this game in the fourth quarter, erasing at one point a 17 point lead, and cutting it down to one. Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, and Coby White all got going and nearly pulled off a stunner, but in the end, it was Memphis’ physical interior defense that sealed the deal.

This loss, coupled with the Miami Heat’s victory over the Spurs, caused the Bulls to drop to second in the eastern conference as they now trail Miami by one game. Their next four games will be against Miami, Atlanta, Milwaukee, and Philadelphia – a tough stretch that the Bulls need to maneuver if they want to hold their position in the conference standings or elevate back into the number 1 seed. Philadelphia and Milwaukee trail the Bulls by 3 games and 4 games, respectively so a cold stretch this upcoming week could see the Bulls slide as far as the fourth or fifth seed.

However, there were positive takeaways from this game. Zach looked better, Tristan Thompson made his presence felt and has showcased his value to the team, but most importantly, we are getting to see the difference health makes for this Bulls roster (Click here for Bulls injury updates).

The Chicago Bulls must get fully healthy in order to take down the top teams.

The last time the Bulls played Memphis, a little over a month ago, their starting lineup was Ayo Dosunmu – Coby White – DeMar DeRozan – Alfonso McKinnie – Nikola Vucevic. They had Malcolm Hill, Troy Brown Jr, Tony Bradley, Marko Simonovic, and Matt Thomas coming off the bench. In a game that was a blowout, the reserves actually came back and made the final score respectable, a 13 point loss.

However, in their second matchup, the Bulls were much healthier, and the Grizzlies needed a superhuman effort from Ja to escape with a victory – and the Chicago Bulls are still not healthy. This time, DeMar had more support, and the Bulls could keep it close, but there is still more room to improve.

Take the rotation between Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu, for example. Against Atlanta, Ayo had it going and as a result, he played over 30 minutes compared to Coby’s 20. However, against Memphis, Ayo had a rough game and it was Coby who got the lion’s share of the minutes. The problem? It still puts a ton of pressure on one of them when the other is having an off night because the Bulls still have no guard depth.

When Caruso and Lonzo come back, Billy Donovan will have the luxury of being able to mitigate the ebbs and flows of Ayo and Coby’s play because their pressure to provide will be lessened by the reintegration of Lonzo and Caruso back into the rotation. That makes a huge difference in games like this one against Memphis where Ayo played 22 minutes but couldn’t get anything going.

The Chicago Bulls still have a lot of room to grow and they still need to learn how to consistently beat good teams, which they’ve struggled doing all year. Much of that has to do with health, as we saw in their two losses to Memphis, but as they slowly get their pieces back, we’re going to see that this team stacks up well against any team in the NBA and has as good a chance as any to represent the East come June.

The Chicago White Sox are rumored to be pursuing Kris BryantTodd Welteron February 27, 2022 at 1:00 pm

The Chicago White Sox are rumored to be diving into the outfield free agent pool once the Major League Baseball lockout ends.

The Sox have internal options to address this position of need. Adam Engel, Andrew Vaughn, and Gavin Sheets can fill that outfield spot if needed. Prospects Micker Adolfo and Yoelqui Cespedes also provide depth in right.

The problem is those five options do not exactly put the Chicago White Sox over the edge enough to win the World Series.

Engel had healthy in 2021, Vaughn and Sheets have limited experience in right, and it is unknown if they can play good defense. Adolfo projects to be a better trade piece to get pitching help than be the player that puts the Chicago White Sox over the top.

Cespedes needs some at-bats in the minors before he is ready to make a meaningful contribution.

That is why the Chicago White Sox might look to four available free agents who can not only make the necessary impact to help the Sox not only repeat as AL Central Division champions but help win the World Series.

The Sox could be looking at a big name Chicago is familiar with. The Athletic’s Jim Bowden is predicting the Chicago White Sox to be active in the Kris Bryant sweepstakes.

When the lockout finally ends watch for the #Rockies #Mariners and #WhiteSox to be heavily involved in the free agent outfield market for: Kris Bryant, Nick Castellanos, Michael Conforto and Seiya Suzuki.

— Jim Bowden? (@JimBowdenGM) February 25, 2022

Bowden is the former Cincinnati Reds and Washington Nationals general manager so he still maintains connections in baseball’s inner circle.

This is really the first time the Southsiders have been linked to Bryant. Prior to the lockout, Bryant was mostly linked to the New York Mets and Seattle Mariners.

Mets, Angels and Padres are among many teams to have shown interest in star free agent Kris Bryant, whose marketing is now percolating, Mariners, Phillies, Rockies, Astros among others who have checked in.

— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) December 2, 2021

If the Chicago White Sox signed Bryant, it would signal to the fan base and the other 29 teams that they are serious about winning the World Series in 2022.

Bryant would not come cheap. He projects to sign for an annual base salary of around $23 million. He is also a Scott Boras client.

The price might be worth it to acquire a former MVP, a four-time All-Star, World Series winner, and a player with a career of 28.7 Wins Above Replacement (WAR).

Fangraphs.com’s ZIPs projection has Bryant declining at the plate over the next three seasons so there is a buyer beware.

In the short term, he can help the Chicago White Sox with their ground ball problem. Bryant has a career 43% fly ball percentage. He does play well in right field with just four career errors.

He can also man third base and left field. That is vital on days the White Sox have Eloy Jimenez as the designated hitter or Yoan Moncada needs a day off.

Would Bryant signing with the Chicago White Sox ruin his Chicago Cubs legacy?

Bryant coming back to Chicago’s south side probably would not jeopardize his Cubs’ legacy.

The Chicago Cubs organization mistreated him when they manipulated his service time. That left a bad taste in Bryant’s mouth that he never could get over. The Cubs organization could have at any time made a significant offer to get Bryant to stay on Chicago’s north side. That offer never came according to Bryant.

Kris Bryant to the White Sox confirmed. A team in Chicago will finally appreciate him 🙂 https://t.co/3MQtyEugIo

— Matt Crawford (@Mattheius2783) February 25, 2022

Bryant helped end the curse in 2016 when the Cubs finally won the World Series after a 108-year drought.

If Cubs fans want to hate on Bryant because their front office never showed him the money, that is fine. Remember, the Cubs did not win a World Series for over a century until Bryant started playing third base and the outfield at Wrigley Field.

Please keep that in perspective in case Bryant decides on returning to Chicago but on the Southside.

Chicago Bears Rumors: Tarik Cohen a name to watch on potential cut listRyan Heckmanon February 27, 2022 at 12:00 pm

Over the next couple weeks, the Chicago Bears have the potential to create even more cap space than they’re currently projected to have when free agency opens up on March 16.

There are quite a few players the Bears may end up cutting ties with in order to create upwards of an additional $20 million in space, depending on the combination of players they part ways with.

One recent article written by Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic mentions a handful of players who could be let go, with nose tackle Eddie Goldman being the most notable and obvious.

But, according to this rumor, Chicago could very well end the waiting period on running back Tarik Cohen.

The Chicago Bears should choose to cut ties with running back Tarik Cohen and move forward with their running back room.

Cohen is set to count $5.75 million against the cap in 2022, and he has not played a game in almost two full seasons. After tearing his ACL, Cohen clearly suffered an unknown setback which the Bears kept fairly under wraps.

Should the Bears choose to cut Cohen, they would save $2.25 million. That doesn’t sound like much, but considering the Bears could use that money to re-sign Jakeem Grant, it makes a whole lot of sense.

Grant is coming off an All Pro season in which he was one of the league’s most exciting return men. After the Bears traded a late-round pick for Grant last year, he took over the return specialist role and never looked back. Grant even went for a couple of explosive plays on offense when called upon.

Not only does it give the Bears flexibility to bring back Grant in Cohen’s place, but it locks in David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert as the team’s one-two punch at running back.

If Cohen returned this season, he would muddle the waters at the running back position. Cohen, when healthy, does present the option to give his offense a quick, speedy offensive weapon. But, Montgomery has become one of the NFL’s top running backs and Herbert proved he was worth giving touches to as a rookie.

The Bears would have clarity at running back, should they cut Cohen loose. Saving the cash is only part of the equation.

Last, the Bears simply cannot wait around for Cohen any longer. It sounds a bit cold-hearted to say something like that, but his return has taken far too long. He deserves a job after Chicago, but the Bears have to move on.

Morant sets Grizzlies mark with 46 to beat Bullson February 27, 2022 at 4:35 am

CHICAGOMemphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant broke the franchise record for most points in a regular-season game with 46 on Saturday night as he powered his team to a 116-110 victory over the Bulls.

Morant broke Mike Miller‘s previous record (45 points) set in 2007. The third-year guard set the overall record for points in the playoffs last season, when he scored 47 points in a Game 2 loss to the Utah Jazz.

Against Chicago, the Grizzlies hung on after letting a 17-point lead shrink to one to come away with the win after losing two in a row. They also stopped Chicago’s six-game winning streak.

Morant surpassed his previous regular-season career-high of 44 points. He scored 20 points in the third quarter and made 15 of 28 shots.

Steven Adams added 12 points and a season-high 21 rebounds, and the Grizzlies frustrated DeMar DeRozan even though the five-time All-Star scored 31 points.

That gave DeRozan 10 straight 30-point games, the longest such streak by a Bulls player since Michael Jordan did it in 10 straight from Dec. 25, 1990, to Jan. 14, 1991. But he was 10 of 29 from the field, ending his NBA-record run of eight games of scoring at least 35 while shooting 50% or better.

Zach LaVine scored 28 points in his second game back after missing the final three prior to the All-Star break because of his ailing left knee.

Memphis led by 17 in the third, with Morant going off in the quarter. He made 7 of 14 shots, including two 3s and a soaring alley-oop dunk near the end of the period.

It was a 16-point game early in the fourth when the Bulls reeled off a 14-0 run, with DeRozan hitting two free throws to cut it to 101-99 with 4:38 remaining.

Chicago’s Coby White cut it to 106-105 when he nailed a 3 with about 2:30 remaining. Morant then hit two free throws before DeRozan drove for a layup.

Desmond Bane hit a 3 to bump the lead to 111-107. The Bulls’ Nikola Vucevic made a foul shot, and Bane and Morant missed jumpers before LaVine hit two free throws to cut it to 111-110 with 25.5 seconds remaining.

Tyus Jones then hit a pair for Memphis to make it a three-point game. DeRozan argued a no-call after he missed in the lane and picked up his second technical after getting one earlier in the game, earning an ejection.

Morant, who got fouled by LaVine in the scramble, then made the technical free throw and two more foul shots to bump the lead to 116-110 with 5.3 seconds remaining.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.

Why go on writing about mystery-writing now?

Why go on writing about mystery-writing now?

Source: Reusableart.com

The world is very different from the way it was just last week. The Russian invasion of Ukraine is being talked about as the largest military action in Europe since World War II.

But my most recent post was part of my series on the book “How to Write a Mystery.” My next one will be, too. But first, I just want to write about why I want to stick with the topic.

One of several other books I have about the history and craft of writing mysteries (or detective stories, as some prefer to call them), “The Golden Age of Murder” by Martin Edwards (London, 2015, Harper Collins), describes the state of society after World War I and as World War II loomed. One of the more biographical chapters, “Echoes of War,” describes the effects of the war on Mac Fleming (husband of Dorothy L. Sayers) and Monty Miller (brother of Agatha Christie).

So how could stories about murder become known as games in those previous ’20s? Edwards wrote, “The bloodless game-playing of post-conflict detective stories is often derided by thoughtless commentators who forget that after so much slaughter on the field of battle the survivors were desperately in need of a change. For a decade or so, detective fiction offered no so much cosiness as a form of convalescence, until people were ready to write and read about terrible events on the field of battle.”

Convalescence sounds good right now. Detectives in stories have solutions at the end of the book, and I can tell how soon the solution will come when I look at where my bookmark is.

The great writers from “between the wars” stayed active to various degrees during the second war. Agatha Christie wrote “Curtain” and “Sleeping Murder,” the last cases for her detectives Hercule Poirot and Jane Marple, respectively, during World War II in case she died in the bombings — but she died in 1976.

So puzzles with solutions can feel good when the world doesn’t seem to be providing solutions. Checking on the explanation in Edwards’ history of the genre makes me feel better today as I go from listening to Rhys Bowen’s Constable Evans solving murders in Wales to reading Laurie King’s Mary Russell (and her husband, Sherlock Holmes) investigating in 1920s Morocco.

Whether I’m listening to the story or reading it, I feel better than the more literally mysterious stories from Ukraine — and elsewhere — on news broadcasts.

So I’ll go on with “How to Write a Mystery.” Its essays may introduce you to new authors, and thus new puzzles. Also, it’s so logical — and I’m sure I’m not the only person starving for logic just now,

I moved to Chicago from the south suburbs in 1986. I have diverse interests, but I love writing about what I’m interested in. Whether it’s a personal interest or part of my career, the correct words to get the idea across are important to me. I love words and languages — French and Scottish words enrich my American English. My career has included years as a journalist and years working in museums, and the two phases were united by telling stories. I’m serious about words and stories. So here I am, ready to tell stories about words and their languages.

Ukraine’s freedom fighters

Ukraine’s freedom fighters

“We will fight to the end.”

Valor. Brave. Heroic. Patriot. Putin obviously didn’t count on people willing to fight until death for their freedom. Here are just a few of soldiers and civilians who are holding out against the presumed capitulation of the sovereign nation to Putin.

God bless them all.

Marine battalion engineer Vitaly Skakun Volodymyrovych blew himself up on a bridge to stop the Russians from advancing in Ukraine.

Heroic Ukrainian border guards tell Russian navy, “Go fuck yourself.” And here.

“Trump Praises Putin, Leaving Republicans in a Bind”

So says the New York Times. Let’s not debate the source. Trump said it. It’s another reason that Republicans need to disqualify this jerk. Republicans have plenty of other viable, attractive candidates. If Trump runs again, Republicans will lose. They’ll toss away their best chance in years to be in charge of three branches of the federal government.

Chicago Blackhawks win on hat tricks from Kane and HagelVincent Pariseon February 26, 2022 at 6:42 pm

The Chicago Blackhawks expected to play a fast and skilled game against the New Jersey Devils on Friday night. With Kevin Lankinen and John Gillies in net for both sides, you were able to go in thinking there would be a lot of goals. There was.

Chicago prevailed with an 8-5 win. There is a lot of skill amongst the two forward groups on these two teams. Each team also has a couple of defensemen that can move the puck well and help create offense. That was all on full display in this game.

The Devils saw some of thier players have awesome games. Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt were each outstanding as they combined for five points in the game. This team is going to be very good if these guys continue to develop at this pace.

It wasn’t enough in this one, however, as the Hawks were able to pull out a win on home ice. Patrick Kane, Alex DeBrincat, Seth Jones, and Brandon Hagel all had huge games which allowed the Hawks to get their victory.

Jones and DeBrincat each had three assists but most of the goal-scoring came from Hagel and Kane. Each of them went into the final two minutes of the game with two goals apiece. They both remarkably hit an empty net to secure a hat trick.

Patrick Kane and Brandon Hagel were outstanding in the Chicago Blackhawks win.

A double hat trick is pretty rare and it is very hard to lose a game where you get one. It was a very good game in terms of entertainment and the Hawks were able to be the victor. Neither team is going to the playoffs but they each have solid pieces to build around.

One thing that was incredibly notable about the game is the play from the American-born players on both sides that have a chance at an Olympic or World Cup roster. Hughes, Kane, Jones, and DeBrincat all combined for 10 points. Team USA has a lot to look forward to and these guys are a big reason for it.

The Hawks are going to try and keep the home cooking going as this win over the Devils snapped a three-game losing streak and they were all at the United Center. They play four of their next five games there too and it starts with the St. Louis Blues on Sunday.

That is going to be a day game against a very good team. The Blues present a much tougher challenge in terms of a team game so the Hawks will need their best. You can expect that Marc-Andre Fleury will be in the net for this one. It is another very good matchup for the home fans in Chicago.
