The foot in the mouth edition of The Month In Review

Goodbye to February, winter and standard time. Hello to March, spring and daylight savings time. On this first day of the new month, it’s a good time to look back at February and some of the idiocy that was said. You might think that because it’s the shortest month of the year, it couldn’t be too bad, but unfortunately, you’d be wrong.

Here’s a peek at some folks who sadly spoke these words and either regretted it or they should have regrets:

We start with Donald Trump, because why change. It began with Trump calling Putin clever and continued with this, “Of course he’s smart. But the real problem is our leaders are dumb. Dumb. So dumb.”

When the entire world is rallying with Ukraine and against Russia and Putin, the former guy doubles down. Nothing new. Remember Helsinki?

Next comes a Trump sycophant, Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin. Here’s his musings on the situation in Ukraine:

“I do think we need to take a look at what all led up to this. I don’t think Vladimir Putin would have moved on Ukraine were it not for the weakness displayed ― certainly by the Biden administration, but by the West in general. Nancy Pelosi, Ret. Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman and Rep. Adam Schiff used Ukraine as a pawn in their impeachment travesty.”

This is from a guy who decided it would be a patriotic way to spend the 4th of July in Moscow…and not the one in Idaho.

Next is Fox News pundit Tucker Carlson. Before the invasion he came up with this:

“It may be worth asking yourself since it is getting pretty serious, what is this really about? Why do I hate Putin so much? Has Putin ever called me a racist? Has he threatened to get me fired for disagreeing with him?”

As things became dicier, Tucker tried to walk back this take, but as he should have known, once it’s out there, it’s always out there. Plus, Russian state television is now using his words as disinformation from the government to its people as a way to rationalize their attack on Ukraine.

Enough about Russian politics, although there are many more examples that can be used. Let’s try sports and Middle East politics. There’s a potential new Golf association that is based in Saudi Arabia and backed by huge Arab bucks. They’ve tried to poach current PGA players but have been met with almost unanimous turn downs. One exception is legendary player Phil Mickelson. Let’s look at what Left had to say:

“They’re scary motherfuckers to get involved with. We know they killed Khashoggi and have a horrible record on human rights. They execute people over there for being gay. Knowing all of this, why would I even consider it? Because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reshape how the PGA Tour operates,”

So this is all about the money, right? He was willing to hook up with murderers for more dollars in his pocket? Phil has made more than one hundred million dollars in PGA winnings. $100,000,000! When you add in his sponsorships that total grows to over eight hundred million. $800,000,000!!! And that’s not enough for him? He needs to hook up with dudes he calls “scary motherfuckers” to add more to his already bulging bank account? To use his own word, ‘greedy motherfucker!’

Since making this statement, he’s tried to take a lot of it back. Phil said the interview was ‘off the record’ which still doesn’t make his words any better. The blowback has been huge. He’s lost most of his major sponsors. While he hasn’t been suspended from playing, Phil will be taking some time off from golf to take stock of himself and try to become a better person. Good luck with that. It’s incredible how a guy who was one of the most popular figures in Golf and just last year won a major tournament at the advanced sports age of fifty-one, has squandered all the goodwill he’s built up over the last three decades.

Let’s take a look at one more dude who opened his mouth and regrets it. That would be MOI!!! What could I possibly say that would cause this? Here ya go:

The day before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, I needed to put gas in the car. I stopped by my local gas station and the gas price was $3.79. The next day, after the Russian troops crossed the border, I drove past that same gas station. The price of gas was $3.99…a twenty cents increase. In fact, I noticed all the gas stations in the area had the same price. These Mickelson-Esque words crossed my mouth:

“Motherfucking Putin! Motherfucking oil executives!”

Such lovely thoughts, right!?….even if I was talking to myself, which happens a lot! But after thinking it over, I came up with my own response to myself: “Twenty cents a gallon is a small price to pay for democracy.”

I’m off the hook, right? HA!

There were so many more people regretting their words but let’s settle on this group of five. Tom Cotton, Scottie Pippen and Marjorie Taylor Greene are off the hook. I’m sure you’ll get another opportunity to embarrass yourselves in March. I’m looking forward to hearing those words.

That’s it for the twenty-eight days of February. See you with the next edition of The Month in Review in thirty-one days.

Every five years or so I decide to update this section. I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for close to ten years. The last time I did this I was close to sixty years old. Now I’m just a few months away from the big 7-ZERO. Scary AF!!! I’m pretty sure I won’t be doing an update when I hit 80, but you never know. But until then, lets just be grateful.

Fantasy basketball and NBA betting cheat sheet for Tuesdayon March 1, 2022 at 4:58 pm

The ESPN fantasy and betting cheat sheet is your pregame destination for our best intel and data to help you make smart fantasy and wagering decisions. NBA game odds are provided by Caesars Sportsbook and fantasy advice is based on ESPN 10-team leagues.

Jump ahead: Game of the night | Picks and props | Analytics edge

What you need to know for tonight’s NBA slate

Count Out Kyrie: Kyrie Irving has exclusively played road games but was unable to travel to Toronto due to the vaccine mandates in Canada. Cam Thomas scored 20-plus points six times in Feb. and should get extended run tonight.

Rocket Ship: Garrison Mathews quietly averaged 11.7 points per game in Feb. and knocked down multiple triples in four straight to close the month. His most recent game? 17 points (in 26 minutes) with four made 3’s against the same Clippers team he faces tonight.

Stephen Cousy: The Mavericks aggressively denied and doubled Stephen Curry in Sunday’s epic comeback, a strategy that led to him quickly passing to open shooters. Minnesota employed a similar approach to James Harden last Friday, resulting in 12 dimes. With Draymond Green and Klay Thompson sidelined for tonight’s matchup against the Timberwolves, Curry’s assist prop (7.5) appears attainable. He paced the Warriors with 68 passes on Sunday — well above his season average of 49.6 and 27 more than any teammate.

1 Related

That’s the Point: With Kevin Porter Jr. questionable for tonight’s game against the Clippers, Dennis Schroder could shine as the team’s lead distributor. He flirted with a triple-double in this role against the Clippers on Saturday and has averaged 7.8 assists since joining Houston at the deadline.

Next Mann Up: With Norman Powell out, Terance Mann has averaged 16 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 2.7 APG, 1.7 SPG and 33 MPG over a six-game sample. He has at least one steal in nine straight games and multiple swipes in six of those. Mann — who is rostered in just 22% of leagues — is an ideal streaming option for tonight’s matchup against the Rockets.

Bogdan Balling: Bogdan Bogdanovic has been the main statistical beneficiary from John Collins‘ absence in Atlanta’s rotation over the past five games. He’s averaged 28.2 combined points, rebounds, and assists during this time. With Collins listed as doubtful for Tuesday night, Bogdanovic could play an important role against Boston tonight. — Jim McCormick and Kyle Soppe

Game of the Night

Line: Mavericks (-5.5)
Moneyline: Mavericks (-220), Lakers (+180)
Total: 217 points
BPI Projected Total: 220 points
BPI Win%: Mavericks (68.6%)

Doug Kezirian and Joe Fortenbaugh break down all of the action you need to watch in the NBA. Listen!

Key players ruled out: Anthony Davis, Avery Bradley

Notable: Everyone is aware of the struggles in Los Angeles, but how about the printing press that the Mavericks have been of late? They’ve covered eight of their past nine, with under tickets cashing in six of those nine games.

Best bet: Luka Doncic over 50.5 total points + assists + rebounds

Doncic averaged 34.7 PPG, 10.3 RPG, and 8.8 APG in Feb with a 42% usage rate. He should thrive against the Lakers, who have struggled defensively against point guards all season. Doncic averaged 25.0 points, 9.3 assists, and 7.0 rebounds in his past three games against the Lakers. — Eric Moody

Best bet: Mavericks -5.5.

The Lakers and Mavericks are moving in opposite directions right now. The Mavs have won seven of their last nine games, with an average scoring margin of +7.7 points during that stretch. The Lakers have lost five of six games with an average margin of -7.5. The Lakers lost by 28 points at home in their last outing, and could bounce-back, but the levels of play suggest the Mavs should have the advantage tonight. — Andre Snellings

Breaking down the rest of the slate

Line: Wizards (-3.5)
Moneyline: Wizards (-170), Pistons (+150)
Total: 218 points
BPI Projected Total: 219.5 points
BPI Win%: Wizards (56.8%)

Key players ruled out: Kristaps Porzingis

Notable: The Wizards may be without the services of Bradley Beal and struggling to cover spreads at home (1-8-1 in their past 10), but four of their past five games in front of their home crowd have gone over the total.

Best bet: Kyle Kuzma over 35.5 total points + assists + rebounds

Kuzma has scored 30 or more points in his last two games. He averaged 21 PPG, 8.8 RPG and 4.3 APG per game in Feb. with a 27.2% usage rate. The Pistons rank 25th in points allowed per 100 possessions while giving up a high percentage of offensive rebounds to opponents. — Moody

Line: Celtics (-6.5)
Moneyline: Celtics (-265), Hawks (+215)
Total: 223.5 points
BPI Projected Total: 219 points
BPI Win%: Celtics (70.7%)

Key players ruled out: none

Notable: The NBA is a game of runs and the Hawks are on one. They’ve seen five straight games go over the total, this coming on the heels of an 11 game stretch that saw nine of 11 Atlanta games go under.

Jayson Tatum has averaged 30.7 PPG in three games against the Hawks this season. Maddie Malhotra/Getty Images

Best bet: Jayson Tatum over 38.5 total points + assists + rebounds

Tatum has averaged 30.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists in three games against the Hawks this season. The Hawks rank 24th in points allowed per possession, allow a high effective field goal percentage and don’t create turnovers. Tatum is positioned to have a big game on Tuesday night. — Moody

Line: Raptors (-8.5)
Moneyline: Raptors (-365), Nets (+280)
Total: 219 points
BPI Projected Total: 218.5 points
BPI Win%: Raptors (73.2%)

Key players ruled out: Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, Ben Simmons, OG Anunoby

Notable: It’s a rematch of last night, but this time it’s north of the border and that matters. The Nets have covered three straight on the road and have seen the over come through in each of their past five away games.

DFS value: Pascal Siakam ($8300 on FD, $8900 on DK)

Siakam has averaged 21 PPG, 9.0 RPG, and 5.3 APG over the past 15 games while playing 37.4 MPG this season. The Nets are near the bottom of the league in terms of defense, allowing 113.4 points per 100 possessions and a high number of offensive rebounds. You can build a strong DFS lineup around Siakam. — Moody

Line: Warriors (-1)
Moneyline: Timberwolves (-110), Warriors (-110)
Total: 231 points
BPI Projected Total: 235.5 points
BPI Win%: Timberwolves (50%)

Key players ruled out: Draymond Green, Klay Thompson

Notable: The Warriors opened February by covering as 6.5-point dogs in San Antonio, but they managed just one cover for the rest of the month.

Best bet: Stephen Curry over 39.5 total points + assists + rebounds

Curry averaged 24 PPG, 7.7 APG, and 4.2 RPG in Feb. The Timberwolves are the worst team in the league when it comes to defensive rebounding and Curry and the Warriors should be able to benefit from the additional shot attempts. — Moody

Best bet: Under 231 points

The Timberwolves Home/Road scoring split has been one of the surest bets in sports for the past month. Minnesota and their opponents have combined to score more than 244 PPG on the road for their last 15-plus road games, but at home, both teams have combined to average about 25 PPG fewer. This game is in Minnesota, where these two teams combined for 218 points the last time they faced off. — Snellings

Line: Clippers (-7)
Moneyline: Clippers (-290), Rockets (+230)
Total: 229.5 points
BPI Projected Total: 219.5 points
BPI Win%: Clippers (60.5%)

Key players ruled out: none

Notable: The Clippers failed to cover on Sunday in a 99-98 win over these Rockets, but they had covered each of the five games prior. Potentially more noteworthy: Sunday’s game marked a fourth under in six games for the Clippers (directly following an 8-1-1 run for the overs).

Best bet: Ivica Zubac over 23.5 total points + assists + rebounds

Centers have been very successful against the Rockets this season with an average of 25.7 PPG, 15.7 RPG, and 3.6 APG. Zubac could be set for a big game. He averaged 13.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks in his past two games against the Rockets. — Moody

Analytics Edge

BPI highest projected totals

1. Golden State Warriors (117.7 points)
2. Minnesota Timberwolves (117.7 points)
3. Toronto Raptors (112.7 points)

BPI lowest projected totals

1. Brooklyn Nets (105.8 points)
2. Atlanta Hawks (106.5 points)
3. Los Angeles Lakers (107.1 points)

BPI top probability to win (straight up)

3 free agent cornerbacks connected to new Chicago Bears leadershipRyan Heckmanon March 1, 2022 at 4:00 pm

Chicago Bears (David Banks-USA TODAY Sports)

This week, the football world will be solely focused on one thing and one only: the 2022 NFL Combine. There are plenty of prospects to watch this week, and much more intrigue than recent years with the Chicago Bears having a new general manager.

Ryan Poles will be heavily involved in the scouting combine, no doubt, but there’s also a huge, key portion of the offseason coming up in just two weeks — NFL free agency.

The Bears have countless holes to fill this year, and they’ll have a decent amount of money to work with to do so. But, Poles will have to be cautious. Recent leadership teams have handed out some hefty contracts which may seem regrettable, and Poles doesn’t want to do that.

Fortunately, he and his brand-new staff have a lot of connections from the organizations they have come from. Poles and Matt Eberflus certainly have options in free agency.

The Chicago Bears could pursue a handful of free agent cornerbacks connected to their new leadership team.

One position which the Bears could use their previous relationships and connections to bolster is at cornerback. Cornerback is arguably the most precious need for this team at the moment, probably tied up there with wide receiver and offensive line.

The two most notable names in the cornerback room are Jaylon Johnson and Thomas Graham Jr., both who present plenty of longevity and potential in the Bears’ secondary.

But outside of those guys, the Bears don’t have a lot to work with and should definitely seek some veteran help. If they chose to go the free agency route, there are three particular cornerbacks which the Bears could pursue, all of whom are familiar with one or more of Chicago’s leadership.

Chicago Bulls currently look severely outmatched by Miami HeatRyan Heckmanon March 1, 2022 at 1:32 pm

If the NBA playoffs started today, the Miami Heat would finish as the number one overall seed, as they are currently two games ahead of the Chicago Bulls.

That 2-game lead looked like a much larger gap on Monday night, though, when the Heat dominated the Bulls pretty much start to finish.

Miami was without veteran and 6-time All Star point guard Kyle Lowry for this one, but it didn’t even matter. Gabe Vincent stepped in for Lowry and played starting-caliber ball for the Heat, finishing with 20 points including four three-pointers.

The Heat used a balanced attack to beat Chicago as they have for pretty much the entire season. The Bulls took this loss 112-99, but at one point were down by 24 in the first half.

If the Chicago Bulls want to compete with the Miami Heat down the line, they’ll need to take a different approach.

Being without Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso hurt the Bulls in this one. Chicago’s defense hasn’t been the same since those two went down to injury, and Monday night was especially noticeable.

Miami used screens all night long without much push-back from the Bulls, and Nikola Vucevic was especially susceptible to these plays. Whether it was Vucevic failing to step out and help, or getting beat by his man off a screen for an easy bucket at the rim, it was a long night for the big guy.

Even DeMar DeRozan had a tough night, which is out of the norm and very odd for Bulls fans to see. DeRozan finished shooting 7-for-16 and only 18 points, ending his infamous streak of 30 or more.

DeRozan wasn’t the only one who was off, though, as the Bulls were pretty bad on both sides of the floor. All five starters finished with a negative plus/minus, and most of them were just flat-out terrible numbers. DeRozan, for example, finished with a -19 while Javonte Green was a miserable -27, a team-worst.

The bench wasn’t much better for the Bulls, as the Heat outscored them 49-23 in bench points. It was a clear-cut drubbing which ended up much closer than the game felt.

Obviously, fans can point to Caruso and Ball, stating that this team will look much different when those two are back. But, this is still a playoff race. The Bulls are living in the here-and-now, and while they’re also still waiting on Patrick Williams to return, the Heat have also sustained plenty of depth issues this season.

But, a team like Miami has been able to push through. Will the Bulls be able to end this 2-game drought, get back to form and learn to play with the best in the East before it’s too late?

5 big-play Chicago Bears wide receiver targets at 2022 NFL CombineRyan Heckmanon March 1, 2022 at 12:00 pm

Chicago Bears (Photo by Alika Jenner/Getty Images)

March is upon us, and it is finally time to get ready for the 2022 NFL Combine. For the Chicago Bears, it’s an exciting week full of optimism as the organization participates under new leadership.

In his first year as Bears general manager, Ryan Poles goes in with a fresh philosophy and a desire to build mostly through the draft as he looks to surround quarterback Justin Fields with as much talent as possible.

This year’s Combine begins today, as players arrive and take their measurements while the real action starts on Thursday.

This year’s Combine is an exciting one, as we haven’t seen a true NFL Combine since 2019 where players, coaches and executives could all be there in person without many limitations. One of the positions in which Bears fans will be watching closely? Wide receiver.

The Chicago Bears have to add explosive, proven talent at the wide receiver position, and the 2022 NFL Combine features plenty.

The Bears’ current depth at wide receiver isn’t much, as it’s essentially the Darnell Mooney show. Aside from Mooney, the Bears have last year’s sixth-round pick Dazz Newsome under contract.

But, other than those two, it’s a bare cabinet. They need plenty of help, here.

Fans love watching the Combine for a variety of reasons, but one of the favorite sets of drills is without a doubt the receiver portion. Whether it’s wondering if we’ll see a history-making 40 time, a vertical leap that catches us off guard or how this year’s prospects look catching the football, this is a fun group each year.

The 2022 class is full of talent, but the Bears need specific players who can make big plays in several ways. Chicago could use speed and a large catch radius on the outside, and shiftiness with yards-after-the-catch potential in the slot.

Five specific receivers should stand out to Bears fans this week, especially considering their current draft capital.

WASHINGTON — The Washington Wizards signed guard Tomas Satoransky on Monday.

Phantom Limb Syndrome is mysterious and quite interesting

Phantom Limb Syndrome is mysterious and quite interesting

Phantom Limb Syndrome is when you still have sensation in the area amputated. I had gangrene due to lupus and had to have amputation of my toes on my right foot, in addition to the fingers on my left hand and the second finger on my right hand.

This is the result of having lupus. Lupus is an autoimmune disease that affects the internal and external organ systems. There is no cure yet but research is ongoing and I’m a part of thousands of people who are affected (mostly women of minority and men diagnosed with discoid lupus which targets the skin).
Currently, I’m suffering from numbness and tingling in the above areas and that’s when the Phantom Limb Pain occur. Whenever I feel pain or discomfort I automatically reach to alleviate the pain on the limbs that are not there. I’ve read a few articles on the subject which says the brain and spinal cord send signals to the affected areas.

Thankfully, I’ve never been the type to quit. I haven’t cried profusely yet but moments of “what if” visits me from time to time. I’ve come to the conclusion that as long as I have lupus, to accept the challenges that comes along with it.
