The Chicago Bears could end up with this excellent offensive linemanRyan Heckmanon March 14, 2022 at 1:17 pm

Today is the day NFL free agency officially begins, with the legal tampering period kicking us off. The Chicago Bears aren’t expected to make any huge splashes during the first wave, but that doesn’t mean we won’t be surprised.

Beyond any free agent options, the Bears also have some key trade possibilities. Last week, general manager Ryan Poles got the Bears started in that realm by trading star pass rusher Khalil Mack.

But, now, they could end up trading for another player if they so choose. Dallas Cowboys offensive tackle La’el Collins has reportedly been given permission to seek out a trade, and if there is no deal in place, then the team will release him.

Whether it’s via trade, or signing him after he’s released, Collins should be a Bear. There are already two teams interested according to the latest rumor, but no word on which teams those are.

Ryan Poles should do what’s necessary to bring La’el Collins to the Chicago Bears.

The Cowboys are apparently souring on Collins and wish he would “take his job more seriously,” whatever that means.

Regardless of the Cowboys’ relationship with Collins, the reality is, he’s an excellent offensive tackle. Last year, he earned an 82.0 grade from Pro Football Focus and only gave up two sacks on 671 snaps played.

Pro Football Network’s Tony Pauline recently wrote that he’s been told the Cowboys “would accept anything in return for Collins, even a late-round pick.”

If that’s the case, then Poles should be on the phone right now. Adding Collins to the opposite side of the line as Teven Jenkins would give this team two great anchors for a few years, as Collins is still only 28 years old.

Larry Borom would then be a fantastic backup who could potentially take over for Collins down the line.

Cutting Collins now would only save the Cowboys a little over $1 million against their cap, but if they designated him as a post-June 1 cut, that number would grow to over $5 million. Still, it’s not a ton of savings for a guy who has been as consistent as Collins has been over his career.

Aside from missing a handful of games last year and all of 2020 with a hip injury, Collins has been pretty dependable. That’s potentially the only worry, here. Is Collins healthy? If he is, then he’s well-worth a late-round pick, rather than just waiting until he’s cut.

NBA Power Rankings: Are the Nets and Warriors back?on March 14, 2022 at 1:28 pm

As college basketball prepares to kick off the men’s and women’s tournaments this week, the NBA is quietly entering the home stretch of the regular season. And while the Phoenix Suns have run away with the Western Conference, the Golden State Warriors trail the Memphis Grizzlies by just half a game — with Draymond Green set to return this week after a two-month absence.

The Miami Heat are on top in the East, but the Philadelphia 76ers and Milwaukee Bucks are 2.5 games back. The Sixers have been surging lately, though they did suffer a blowout loss to the Brooklyn Nets in Ben Simmons‘ return to Philadelphia.

Can the No. 8 Nets build on that momentum with Kevin Durant back in the lineup and climb the standings in the final month of the season? Can the Los Angeles Lakers build on LeBron James‘ recent play and make a late-season push?

Our experts break down all 30 teams one month before the playoffs begin.

Note: Throughout the regular season, our panel (Tim Bontemps, Jamal Collier, Nick Friedell, Andrew Lopez, Tim MacMahon, Dave McMenamin and Ohm Youngmisuk) is ranking all 30 teams from top to bottom, taking stock of which teams are playing the best basketball now and which teams are looking most like title contenders.

1. Phoenix Suns
2021-22 record: 54-14
Previous ranking: 1

With their win Wednesday against the Heat, the Suns became the first team this season to clinch a playoff berth. At 54-14, the Suns are well on their way to clinching home court through the entire 2022 playoffs. Phoenix has a 7.5-game lead on the Western Conference’s No. 2 team (Memphis) and a 9.5-game advantage over the Eastern Conference’s No. 1 seed (Miami). — Lopez

2. Miami Heat
2021-22 record: 45-24
Previous ranking: 2

Miami has plenty of time to rest this week with only two games — against the Pistons and Thunder — on the schedule. The good news for the Heat is that Victor Oladipo is finally back in the lineup and has shown flashes of solid play in limited minutes. Coach Erik Spoelstra will have plenty of time to get his veteran group in position for a drive into the playoffs over the next few weeks. — Friedell

3. Memphis Grizzlies
2021-22 record: 47-22
Previous ranking: 3

2 Related

Dillon Brooks had 15 points and four assists in Sunday’s win over the Thunder, his return after missing two and a half months due to an ankle injury. Coach Taylor Jenkins inserted Brooks right back into the starting lineup and will gradually ramp up his minutes. Brooks has been the Grizzlies’ second-leading scorer over Ja Morant‘s career, but his presence is more essential on the other end, as he’s by far Memphis’ best on-ball defender. — MacMahon

4. Golden State Warriors
2021-22 record: 46-22
Previous ranking: 6

Coach Steve Kerr’s group is getting back on track after winning three straight. Klay Thompson poured in 38 points in Saturday’s win over the Bucks. Jordan Poole hit several big shots in Thursday’s win over the Nuggets and “Jackie Moon” provided a comedic assist prior to Tuesday’s win over the Clippers. Golden State is also expecting Draymond Green back on Monday, and James Wiseman started his G League rehab stint in hopes of soon making his season debut. — Friedell

5. Milwaukee Bucks
2021-22 record: 42-26
Previous ranking: 4

The Bucks are getting a huge reinforcement to their lineup this week when center Brook Lopez returns to action for the first time since opening night. Lopez required back surgery in December and has been limited to just one game this season. Milwaukee has missed his presence on defense, where the Bucks have slipped to 13th in defensive rating, the lowest they have ever been under coach Mike Budenholzer. — Collier

6. Philadelphia 76ers
2021-22 record: 41-25
Previous ranking: 5

Thursday’s blowout loss to Brooklyn exposed the concerns about this roster post-James Harden trade, name it’s sometimes-porous defense. Sunday’s overtime win against Orlando again showed that it’s going to take some time to develop their chemistry. Up next? An MVP showdown between Nikola Jokic and Joel Embiid in Philadelphia Monday night. — Bontemps

7. Boston Celtics
2021-22 record: 41-28
Previous ranking: 8

Even after Boston’s last-second loss to Dallas on Kevin Garnett Day Sunday, the Celtics have to feel good. They sit just 1.5 games back of second place in the East and continue to look like a completely different team from the one that teeter-tottered its way to a .500 record through the first 50 games. — Bontemps

8. Dallas Mavericks
2021-22 record: 42-26
Previous ranking: 10

The Mavs have gone from miserable to magnificent in clutch situations this season. They ranked last in the league in clutch defensive efficiency (130.1) and net rating (minus-34.5) after a Feb. 2 overtime loss to the Thunder. Since then, Dallas ranks first in those two categories (78.9 defensive efficiency, plus-48.8 net rating). Dallas has won 10 of 12 games that qualify as clutch in that span, including Sunday’s comeback in Boston, when the Mavs held the Celtics scoreless for the final 2:37. — MacMahon

9. Utah Jazz
2021-22 record: 42-25
Previous ranking: 7

The Jazz are fighting to hold home-court advantage in the first round, but finding rest for Mike Conley also must be a priority down the stretch of the regular season, as Utah needs him fresh to have real hope of making a deep playoff run. Conley, 34, has averaged only 7.7 points on 25.6% shooting since the All-Star break. He has been sitting one game of back-to-backs. — MacMahon

10. Chicago Bulls
2021-22 record: 41-26
Previous ranking: 9

Bulls guard Alex Caruso picked up right where he left off in his first game since Jan. 21, with 11 points, four assists and four steals in a win over the Cavs on Saturday. Chicago’s defense enjoyed an immediate boost with Caruso’s presence in just his third game since Dec. 20. Saturday marked the first time since Caruso’s last game against the Bucks that the Bulls have held an opponent under 100 points. — Collier

11. Denver Nuggets
2021-22 record: 40-28
Previous ranking: 11

The Nuggets won 12 of 14 games before dropping two straight to Golden State and Toronto. Coach Michael Malone’s team hasn’t lost consecutive games since a three-game slide at the start of February. Denver didn’t have Aaron Gordon in the loss to Toronto and was without Will Barton against the Warriors. Still, Denver knows it can execute, defend and rebound better than it did in those two losses. The Nuggets lead Minnesota by 1.5 games for the sixth spot. — Youngmisuk

12. Brooklyn Nets
2021-22 record: 35-33

Monday, March 14
Nuggets at 76ers, 7:30 p.m.
Bucks at Jazz, 10 p.m.

Wednesday, March 16
Mavericks at Nets, 7:30 p.m.
Celtics at Warriors, 10 p.m.

The soap opera of the Nets’ season hit a high point in recent days. Kyrie Irving dropped an efficient 50 points in a win over Charlotte on Tuesday. Kevin Durant and Irving dominated Joel Embiid and the Sixers on Thursday while holding James Harden to a 3-for-17 performance as Ben Simmons watched from the bench. Durant dropped 53 on the Knicks on Sunday — and then called out NYC Mayor Eric Adams as Irving watched from his courtside seat because of the city’s vaccination mandate. — Friedell

13. Cleveland Cavaliers
2021-22 record: 38-29
Previous ranking: 12

The Cavs continue to stumble and hold just a one-game lead over No. 7 Toronto for the last automatic playoff bid. They’ve lost eight out of 11 and have had to reconfigure their lineup with Jarrett Allen going out with a broken left middle finger, adding Kevin Love to the starting group after he had carved out an efficient niche off the bench. — McMenamin

14. Toronto Raptors
2021-22 record: 37-30
Previous ranking: 15

A week ago, Toronto seemed like it had little chance of getting out of the play-in. Now, after sweeping a road back-to-back in Phoenix and Denver, coupled with Cleveland continuing to spiral down the standings, the Raptors are suddenly within striking distance of the East’s top six. — Bontemps

15. Minnesota Timberwolves
2021-22 record: 39-30
Previous ranking: 13

The Timberwolves are coming off one of their best wins of the season — a 17-point comeback to defeat the Heat on the road on Saturday night. It avenged a disappointing loss the previous night against the Magic and gave Minnesota its first win of the year when trailing by such a large margin. — Collier

16. LA Clippers
2021-22 record: 36-34
Previous ranking: 14

After a lackluster loss to the Knicks followed by a tough loss at Golden State, the Clippers pulled off another double-digit comeback to beat the Wizards. Reggie Jackson had a tough game in a loss at Atlanta but then played one of his more controlled games in a win at Detroit. With 12 games remaining in the season and the Clippers looking like they will likely be the eighth seed, coach Ty Lue admitted that the Clippers will likely find time to rest some of their vets like Jackson down the stretch. — Youngmisuk

17. Atlanta Hawks

Trae Young put on another spectacular performance on Sunday night in a 131-128 win against the Pacers. Young had 33 points in the first half, setting a new career high for points in a half. He finished with 47 points on just 20 shots. He was 13-of-20 from the field with seven 3s, while going 14-of-14 from the free throw line. It was Young’s seventh 40-point game this season — he trails only Joel Embiid (10) and Giannis (8) for the most in the NBA this year. — Lopez

18. Charlotte Hornets
2021-22 record: 33-35
Previous ranking: 19

Because Washington and New York have steep climbs in the race for the play-in tournament, the Hornets can feel secure that they’re going to be in it for a second straight year. But Charlotte needs to get Gordon Hayward healthy — he’s missed more than a month with an ankle injury — and has work to do avoid a 10th place finish and the tall task of winning two road games to make the playoffs –– Bontemps

19. Los Angeles Lakers

Previous ranking: 18

Anthony Davis will begin on-court workouts Monday, just shy of four weeks since he suffered a sprain in his right foot. While Davis told reporters Sunday he is “very optimistic” he’ll be able to make it back before the season ends, LeBron James said that might not be enough to fix this Lakers team. “It puts a band-aid on some things, but I mean, we just haven’t had enough chemistry, enough time with our group to be able to know exactly who we are and who we can become,” he said. “AD definitely helps, but it’s not the answer to all the questions.” — McMenamin

20. New Orleans Pelicans
2021-22 record: 28-40
Previous ranking: 20

With Brandon Ingram dealing with a right hamstring injury and CJ McCollum in health and safety protocols, the Pelicans’ offense sputtered after winning four straight out of the break. They got back on track with Sunday’s 130-105 win over Houston. Backup point guard Jose Alvarado had 16 points, 10 assists and 6 steals in the win, becoming the third player in franchise history to hit those marks in a game, joining Baron Davis and Chris Paul. — Lopez

The Wizards’ play-in hopes are slipping away. Washington lost the first three games of its western swing. They blew a double-digit lead to the Clippers again, watching them score the final 11 points of the game. Then LeBron James ruined Kyle Kuzma and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope‘s reunion with the Lakers with a 50-point night. Making matters worse, the Wizards followed that up by giving up 44 points to Josh Hart in a 127-118 loss to Portland. The Wizards trail Charlotte by three games for the 10th spot with 16 games left. — Youngmisuk

22. New York Knicks
2021-22 record: 28-40
Previous ranking: 23

New York has turned things around over the past week or so, playing much better and ripping off a few victories. While the play-in tournament seems unlikely — the Knicks are still five games out of 10th in the East — at least there’s the ability for the Knicks to create some positive momentum over the final few weeks of the regular season heading into the offseason. — Bontemps

23. San Antonio Spurs
2021-22 record: 26-42
Previous ranking: 24

When the Spurs defeated the Jazz on Friday night to make Gregg Popovich the NBA’s all-time leader in regular-season coaching victories, they did so by accomplishing something they hadn’t all season. Entering the fourth quarter, the Spurs trailed 74-64 before coming back to win. According to ESPN Stats and Information research, it’s the first time all season the Spurs trailed by 10 entering the fourth quarter and won the game. They were 0-33 prior to that in such situations this season. — Lopez

24. Portland Trail Blazers

Portland picked up its first victory since the All-Star break after Josh Hart tallied a career-high 44 points against Washington. It remains to be seen how many more wins the Blazers will get in the next few weeks with Anfernee Simons (knee) out for at least a couple more weeks. Justise Winslow has been sidelined and Jusuf Nurkic and Damian Lillard remain out. — Youngmisuk

The Chicago Blackhawks need to blow up the roster nowJames Mackeyon March 14, 2022 at 11:00 am

Missing the playoffs is imminent for the Chicago Blackhawks. With the trade deadline fast approaching, the Hawks should consider blowing it up and setting the future in full rebuild mode.

After finally naming a full time GM, it is time for the Hawks to use that to their advantage. They need to trust the decisions he makes so they can try to get the correct return for trading big stars.

With so many bright stars in Rockford (who have made a few appearances in the NHL) and with Kane and Toews needing new contracts, offloading to a contender this season makes sense.

Lukas Reichel’s first year between the Blackhawks and Ice Hogs has been strong. At this point, in 39 games he’s averaging about 1 PPG. He is the team leader in goals with 16, assists with 22, and points with 38. It has been a magnificent year s far.

Shortly behind him is Ian Mitchell. Mitchell has also seen time in the NHL and the AHL over the past two seasons. He has 18 assists, 8 goals, and 26 points in Rockford. In Chicago, he has 8 points in 47 games with 3 goals and 5 assists.

Collin Delia has been a strong goaltender in the AHL with 302 goals against in 111 games. He is sporting a 2.80 GAA and a .908 SV% which is outstanding. Delia has a 3.69 GAA and a .903 SV% in 26 NHL games.

It is time for the Chicago Blackhawks to rebuild the entire roster of players.

The Hawks have younger pieces in the locker room that they can keep. Alex DeBrincat, Dylan Strome, Kevin Lankinen, and a few players in Rockford could be kept because they need to focus on their development. Moves like this could set the future head coach up for success in the years to come.

At this point in the year, not enough games remain for the Blackhawks to contend and push for the playoffs. In a division as strong as the Central and a Wild Card race as tight as the Western Conference’s, the Hawks are toast.

Even if the Hawks did make the playoffs, a first-round exit is basically guaranteed at the hands of the Colorado Avalanche.

This Chicago Cubs division rival makes a huge tradeVincent Pariseon March 14, 2022 at 12:33 am

The Chicago Cubs are in a highly competitive NL Central Division. The Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals will likely duke it out for the top spot but the Cubs could fight hard with the Cincinnati Reds for third place.

That third-place spot could mean a postseason berth in 2022 now that there is an extra playoff team in the CBA. That means the Cubs have to pay attention to every move that their division rivals make over the next few weeks.

The Cincinnati Reds made a rather notable move on Sunday when they made a trade. They traded Sonny Gray and Francis Peguero to the Minnesota Twins for Chase Petty. It is a very interesting trade for both teams when you consider their rosters.

The Twins were horrid in 2021. They were probably the most disappointing team of the season based on expectations. They couldn’t pitch at all so they traded for Gray but that doesn’t even come close to fixing the lack of arm talent on the team.

Landing Francis Peguero is an okay move for them as they could use as many minor league arms as they can get right now. He could turn into a very good pitcher one day but he will start in the minors for them.

#MNTwins acquire Sonny Gray from CIN in exchange for Chase Petty pic.twitter.com/ZBbG5tStRS

— Minnesota Twins (@Twins) March 13, 2022

The Chicago Cubs have a division rival selling off good pieces already.

As for the Reds, which is the real concern for the Cubs, it seems like they are retooling. They probably don’t see 2022 as a competitive year if they are training Sonny Gray for a top prospect. Gray is a great pitcher and the prospect that the Reds got is awesome but the timing is notable.

Chase Petty was the Minnesota Twins’ first-round pick in 2021 so you know he is a supremely talented young player. If the Reds develop him properly, it could prove to be very smart. However, it will prove to be a move that screams rebuild because Gray is yet another good player who is off their team now.

With the pitching staff that the Cubs have, it is possible for them to keep up with the Reds as long as their bullpen is good enough and they can score some runs. With the way that the Reds are running their business, that is entirely possible.

Vinnie Hinostroza dominates at the NHL Heritage ClassicVincent Pariseon March 13, 2022 at 11:29 pm

Outdoor NHL games are some of the best events put on in the sports world these days. On Sunday, the Buffalo Sabres took on the Toronto Maple Leafs in Hamilton, Ontario. It was a tremendous game led by Vinnie Hinostroza who is a former Chicago Blackhawks forward.

He is also a native of Bartlett, Illinois so it is so cool to see him have a game like that on the big stage. Whenever local athletes dominate like that on the big stage, it is something to be happy about.

Hinostroza had two goals and an assist in Buffalo’s 5-2 win over the Leafs. Each team was wearing an awesome throwback sweater as they honored the great game of hockey in its natural elements.

When you look at the standings of the NHL’s Atlantic Division, you can see that the Leafs are significantly better than the Sabres so this was a very fun game dominated by the underdog. Auston Matthews had his nightly goal but that was about the extent of Toronto’s offense.

— Buffalo Sabres (@BuffaloSabres) March 13, 2022

The Blackhawks should have done what they can to keep Vinnie Hinostroza.

The Sabres have had a tough year. Hinostroza’s team is loaded with young talent that is trying to build towards the future. They have the longest playoff drought in the NHL and they just traded their superstar, Jack Eichel.

It will be interesting to see what Hinostroza’s future with that team is. You were able to see on the big stage some of the stuff that he has the ability to do in the NHL. He is a skilled gritty player that has carved out a nice career so far.

The Blackhawks could really use a player like him right now. He had extra motivation playing for his hometown team but they traded him away to get rid of Marian Hossa’s contract. When they got him back, he was good but they didn’t retain him so he went to Buffalo.

He has bet on himself with his current one-year deal with the Sabres and it could pay off for him. By the end of the year, it is fair to assume that he will get another NHL contract in 2022-23 and possibly beyond. As the best active player from Illinois, it is easy to root for him.

Chicago Bears reportedly interested in free agent WR Christian KirkRyan Heckmanon March 13, 2022 at 8:30 pm

When the 2022 edition of NFL free agency opens its doors on Monday for the legal tampering period, the Chicago Bears will be hot on the trail of a handful of wide receivers.

One target has already emerged in Pittsburgh Steelers free agent JuJu Smith-Schuster. As of Sunday morning, the Bears were one of the top teams interested.

Beyond Smith-Schuster, the Bears are looking at a few other options.

One of those options became clearer on Sunday when Arizona Cardinals beat reporter Johnny Venerable tweeted that the Bears have been in on 25-year-old wide receiver Christian Kirk.

The Chicago Bears have been interested in Christian Kirk for weeks now.

— Johnny Venerable (@JohnnyVenerable) March 13, 2022

Christian Kirk would be a solid free agent addition for the Chicago Bears, but at the right price.

Just within the last couple of days, multiple reports have stated that the former Texas A&M standout would receive $15 million per year in his next contract, which would be a hefty amount to pay for a guy who hasn’t been a true number one option — and likely won’t be.

Kirk is a speedy, shifty wideout who can gain a whole lot of yards after the catch and when in open space. He’s a nice deep threat to compliment Darnell Mooney, leaving the Bears with a decision on who comes in to play the slot.

Over four seasons in Arizona, Kirk has compiled 236 receptions on 358 targets, accumulating 2,902 yards and 17 receiving touchdowns. He’s also shown an ability to take a jet sweep or two for some good yardage.

Back in 2018, when Kirk was coming out of college, a lot of Bears fans wanted Kirk in Chicago after he had a strong showing at the Combine. Since being drafted by Arizona, the Cardinals haven’t used Kirk for much more than a second or third option, depending on the year.

Kirk could absolutely provide value to the Bears, as head coach Matt Eberflus wants to get younger and faster. He’s after guys who know how to run and run quickly. Kirk fits that mold, and he would also potentially give some value on special teams.

Depending on what the Bears do with Jakeem Grant, Kirk could become their main return specialist. He was a monster return man in college and has since returned a total of 51 punts in four seasons with the Cardinals.

If Poles and the Bears pursue Kirk, expect a deal to look similar to a 4-year, $55 million contract. Next year, the Bears are currently projected to have over $140 million in cap space as it stands. So, going forward, they could afford a move like this — especially if it helps get Fields to where he should ultimately be.

Cubs add reliever Chavez on minor league dealon March 13, 2022 at 8:49 pm

MESA, Ariz. — The Chicago Cubs have signed Jesse Chavez to a minor league deal that includes an invitation to big league camp, adding the veteran reliever after he had a strong year with the champion Atlanta Braves.

The 38-year Chavez posted a 2.14 ERA in 33 2/3 innings last season after being called up for a start in June. He also pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings in the postseason.

Chavez appeared in 32 games with Chicago in 2018, going 2-1 with a 1.15 ERA over 39 innings.

The right-hander was waived by the Los Angeles Angels at the end of spring training last year. He signed with the Braves last April and made 13 appearances for Triple-A Gwinnett before returning to the majors.

Then Chavez’s possible landings spots for 2022 were put on hold with the lockout.

“I was on a high after last season and then kind of get stuck in no man’s land for a few months,” he said Sunday. “Then you had to pick up right away and (decide) where are we going to go.”

Chavez is expected to provide a veteran presence in what could be a young bullpen.

“I’ll take what I have learned throughout the years and try help these young guys so they can have a long successful career,” Chavez said. “I’m up for anything. I’m personable and easy to talk to. There is no wrong conversation you can’t have out there in the bullpen, especially for the young guys. The hardest part is asking the question and I’ve been there.”

Chavez made his big league debut with Pittsburgh in 2008. He is 44-60 with a 4.44 ERA in 511 games for nine major league teams.

“Being able to put this uniform on, walk through the ivy and those gates was awesome,” he said. “And I want to do it again.”

Patrick Kane makes history again in Chicago Blackhawks winVincent Pariseon March 13, 2022 at 5:18 pm

Things have not gone particularly well for the Chicago Blackhawks since winning the Stanley Cup in 2015. It was their third Cup in 6 years so there wasn’t much to complain about but now it is getting worse. They are getting worse as their stars get older with little to look forward to. However, Patrick Kane continues to put on a show.

Kane is already considered to be one of the greatest players in franchise history and he still has a lot of hockey left. By the time he is done, he could be considered to be the greatest player in team history and American history.

On Saturday, the Blackhawks went into Canada’s capital and beat the Ottawa Senators pretty well. The final score was 6-3 and Kane had a major influence. He had three assists in the game which was pretty special to see. He helps everyone he plays with succeeding which is the sign of an elite player.

He now has 49 assists on the season which is incredible for him playing on this horrid team. It is exciting because he continues to make history as time goes on as well. His first assist of the game came on a Jonathan Toews goal and it was a big milestone.

The assist passed Bobby Hull for second all-time on Chicago’s scoring list. He was previously tied with him at 1153 but that point passed him up. He blew past it by adding the other two assists to get his total to 1156. He now only trails Stan Mikita who has an incredible 1467.

Patrick Kane is one of the greatest players in Chicago Blackhawks history.

When you thought of the all-time great Blackhawks players ten years ago, Hull and Mikita were at the front of it. Now, Kane is right there in the mix. So is Jonathan Toews who scored the goal that helped Kane pass Hull which is amazing theatre. Hockey is romantic.

It is going to be really hard for Kane to pass Mikita. He might reach that point total in his career but will he do it with Chicago? He only has the rest of this year and next year left on his deal. He might want to remain a Blackhawks player forever but how realistic is that?

Either way, we get to enjoy him in Chicago for now. He has been a pleasure to watch for all these years with good teams and with bad teams. He still has a few other records within reach but the main thing is getting this Blackhawks team back into contention. It is still nice, however, to celebrate a legendary Chicago player like Kane.

Chicago Bears taking risk by targeting free agent JuJu Smith-SchusterRyan Heckmanon March 13, 2022 at 4:12 pm

The legal tampering period of NFL free agency begins Monday, and the Chicago Bears are already in the midst of some big rumors. The tampering period, for those who do not know, is essentially a two-day window where teams and players can negotiate contracts before they are allowed to become official.

New general manager Ryan Poles has stated, though, that he and the Bears will not likely be involved in the first wave as there are going to be some big, hefty contracts handed out.

However, Poles also said that before the decision to trade Khalil Mack was finalized. Now that the Bears have entered a rebuild, getting younger and establishing weapons around Justin Fields is top priority.

Sunday morning, a rumor surfaced about where Pittsburgh Steelers free agent wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster could end up, and the Bears were mentioned as one of the top four landing spots.

The Chicago Bears are interested in signing free agent wideout JuJu Smith-Schuster, but should tread carefully.

Smith-Schuster only appeared in five games last season before he went on injured reserve with a shoulder injury. But, the 25-year-old wide receiver is ready for a healthy offseason and could be entering a new era in his young career.

One of the biggest question marks regarding Smith-Schuster has had to do with his maturity level, or lack thereof. In the past, Smith-Schuster has been in headlines with his social media-inspired dances — specifically doing them on opposing teams’ logos.

He has since then called it quits in respect to his dancing, and there are a lot of Steelers fans out there who have seen the former USC Trojan take a step forward in his maturing. If he is indeed past all of the questions about his attitude or maturity level, then maybe Smith-Schuster is worth pursuing.

Other than his personality question marks, Smith-Schuster has truly only had one high-level season of production. That’s the other caveat to any team that signs him. Are they going to get that same guy who went for 111 receptions, 1,426 yards and seven scores back in 2018?

Going after a guy who has only had one top-level season, in terms of productivity, is definitely a risk. Put aside any character questions for a moment — this would certainly be a risk by Poles, if he ends up signing the 2017 second-round pick.

While the Steelers have been in rumors as to whom their next quarterback could be, the possibility of re-signing Smith-Schuster also remains. With Diontae Johnson and Chase Claypool as other top options, Pittsburgh could choose to move on from Smith-Schuster if they felt comfortable with those guys.

The Bears, meanwhile, could use a big-bodied slot receiver as a target for Justin Fields. Remember, he is still only 25 years old and would fit the direction Poles is trying to drive.

Chicago Bears (Mike Dinovo-USA TODAY Sports)

The dust has settled. The Chicago Bears are really moving forward without Khalil Mack.

When general manager Ryan Poles decided to trade Mack, he signaled that a rebuild was imminent. Fortunately, the Bears aren’t in a bad position.

The Bears have one thing that many teams don’t have when entering a rebuild, and that is a young, franchise quarterback like Justin Fields.

Now, it’s all about building around Fields. Poles dealt Mack in order to take some pressure off the salary cap in future and to also obtain some extra draft capital.

What players will be available for the Chicago Bears with the pick they received in the Khalil Mack trade?

In the Mack trade, the Bears received two picks from the Los Angeles Chargers: A second-round pick this year and a sixth-round pick next year. The second rounder this year lands at pick no. 48.

At that spot, the Bears very well could land a starter for years to come. This year’s draft class is one of the deeper classes in recent memory, and all four of the top rounds possess plenty of starting talent.

Chicago’s holes go way beyond just one or two positions now, but everybody is focused on a few key needs. The Bears have to surround Fields with wide receivers to play alongside Darnell Mooney. They also need offensive line help, and one could argue at any position up front.

Defensive line and linebacker are also now areas of need after the Bears released guys like Eddie Goldman and Danny Trevathan. Of course, cornerback remains a hot spot, too.

At that pick no. 48, the Bears will have some attractive options to meet some needs. Let’s take a look at a few select players who could be available at that point in the 2022 NFL Draft.
