Albert Pujols is a Chicago Cubs division rival once againVincent Pariseon March 28, 2022 at 5:04 am

There have been a lot of good players to come through the National League Central Division over the years. Even the Chicago Cubs have had a few of them but the opponents have also had a lot. One of the best ever was Albert Pujols during his time with the St. Louis Cardinals.

It has been a long time since he played for them, however, as many of his recent years have been spent with the Los Angeles Angels before being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2021. They made a deep playoff run but his stay there was short-lived.

Now, Pujols is back in the NL Central as he has signed a one-year deal worth 2.5 million dollars with the St. Louis Cardinals. He is returning back to the place where it all started for him. At 42 years old, you have to think that this is his final year playing with the team where he became a legend.

This is going to be so cool for fans of baseball. He currently has 679 home runs which is good for fifth all-time. He is one of only nine players to ever reach the 600 plateau and only trails Alex Rodriguez by 17 home runs for fourth all-time. He had 17 in 2021 so it could be close if he has a good year (for his 42-year-old self standards).

He’s coming home.

The Chicago Cubs are going to be division rivals with Albert Pujols once again.

Of those 679 career home runs, 445 of them came with the Cardinals. He did most of his damage there in his prime and now he will try to finish his career on a high note with that team. He isn’t going to terrorize the Cubs as he once did as a division rival but he can still make life hard on the opponent.

In his career, he has hit 57 home runs against the Cubs. That is the second-most against any team as he only has more against the Houston Astros. The Astros were also his division rival with both the Cardinals and Angels (they switched to the American League) so it makes sense why he had slightly more against them.

The division is going to be interesting this year as the Cubs try to prove a lot of people wrong. Pujols will certainly give the Cardinals a morale boost but they had intentions of winning the division before this news.

It will come down to them and the Milwaukee Brewers (unless the Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, or Cincinnati Reds pull off a miracle). As annoying as it might be for Chicago fans to see him back in Cardinal red, this is so cool for baseball. Pujols is truly one of the greats.

Wolves’ Prince fined $15K for gesture on courton March 27, 2022 at 10:31 pm

NEW YORK — The NBA has fined Minnesota Timberwolves forward Taurean Prince $15,000 for making an obscene gesture on the court.

The league announced the fine Sunday.

It stemmed from an incident that occurred at the end of the third quarter during the Timberwolves’ 116-95 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night. Prince and Dallas’ Luka Doncic both got technical fouls for barking at each other.

Prince scored 14 points off the bench as the Wolves stopped a two-game losing streak.

Rays acquire OF Ramirez in trade with Cubson March 26, 2022 at 3:33 am

MESA, Ariz. — The Tampa Bay Rays acquired outfielder Harold Ramirez in a trade with the Chicago Cubs on Friday.

Ramirez batted .268 with seven homers and 41 RBI in 99 games with Cleveland last season. He was acquired by the Cubs for cash in November.

Chicago got minor league infielder Esteban Quiroz in the deal with Tampa Bay. The 30-year-old Quiroz hit .268 with 12 homers and 48 RBI in 68 games with Triple-A Durham last year.

A native of Cartagena, Colombia, Ramirez, 27, is a .271 hitter over parts of three seasons with Miami and Cleveland. He ranked sixth among NL rookies with 116 hits for the Marlins in 2019.

White Sox’s Mercedes (hand) out 6-8 weekson March 26, 2022 at 2:40 am

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Chicago White Sox designated hitter Yermin Mercedes will miss the start of the season because of a left hand injury.

A CT scan on Friday showed a hamate fracture in Mercedes’ hand. The team said he will have surgery Monday, and his projected recovery time is six to eight weeks.

The 29-year-old Mercedes was one of baseball’s hottest hitters at the beginning of last season, batting .415 with five homers and 16 RBI in 22 games in April. He angered Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa by homering on a 3-0 pitch from a Twins position player in the ninth inning of a 16-4 win at Minnesota on May 17.

Mercedes eventually cooled off, hitting .150 (16 for 107) over his final 31 games with Chicago before being demoted to Triple-A Charlotte on July 2.

After he was sent down, Mercedes announced he was quitting the game, and then returned to the Knights a day later.

Chicago Bears trade Nick Foles in one of these 3 dealsRyan Heckmanon March 26, 2022 at 12:00 pm

Over the course of free agency thus far, first-year Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles has taken his time in turning over this roster.

The first big move came with a bang, as he made the crucial, tough decision to trade pass rusher Khalil Mack to what has become an AFC powerhouse in the Los Angeles Chargers.

Other than trading Mack, Poles has taken things slow. One of the more recent moves saw the Bears ink backup quarterback Trevor Siemian to a 2-year deal just a couple of days ago.

In the coming hours, following the Siemian signing, rumors and reports surfaced all over in regards to the Bears now looking to trade veteran Nick Foles — also known as a Ryan Pace blunder.

Ryan Poles and the Chicago Bears have more than just the logical options in possibly trading Nick Foles.

If Siemian was signed to a standard 1-year, prove-it type of deal, none of this conversation would be happening. However, it’s interesting to note that Siemian’s deal is for two years and worth a base of $4 million and a maximum of $5 million.

Without a doubt, Foles’ time in Chicago is coming to an end. The Bears could choose to designate Foles as a post-June 1st cut and save $3 million. But, Poles would obviously rather add to their draft capital this year.

The Bears have six draft picks, and while they won’t get much for Foles, Chicago would love to have the standard number of picks in this upcoming draft with seven. Trading Foles now becomes somewhat of a priority, a challenge, and something which would make fans thrilled with their team’s new general manager.

If Poles explored the following three trade scenarios, the Bears could come away satisfied.

Liddell says bye to Ohio St., declares for drafton March 25, 2022 at 11:04 pm

Ohio State junior forward E.J. Liddell will enter the 2022 NBA draft and forgo his remaining college eligibility by hiring an agent, he announced via Twitter on Friday.

“I will cherish the time and commitment of Buckeye Nation,” Liddell’s statement read in part. “I hope the feeling is mutual! With that, I’d like to announce that I will be hiring an agent and entering the 2022 NBA Draft.”

Ohio State’s NCAA tournament run ended with a 71-61 loss in the second round to Villanova. Liddell finished the game with 17 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks in 35 minutes.

“Choosing to play for Coach [Chris] Holtmann has been the best decision for me not only as a player but as a person. Thank you for believing in me Coach,” Liddell said. “To our trainers, managers and the rest of our coaching staff, I appreciate you all for allowing me to carry on the great traditions and culture of being a Buckeye. Most importantly thank you God for everything. Without you none of this would have been possible.”

Liddell, the No. 38 prospect in the ESPN 100 for 2019, was named first-team All-Big Ten for a second consecutive season and averaged 19.4 points 7.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists. Liddell also led the Big Ten with 2.6 blocks per game. The Belleville, Illinois-born Liddell was named a third-team All-American by the Associated Press.

“I’m really excited for E.J. as he begins his NBA career,” Holtmann said. “He has developed and grown significantly as a player every single year as a Buckeye, and that will continue to be the case as an NBA player. E.J. has represented our program at the highest level with his excellent play, leadership and of course, his trademark smile. E.J. will always be a Buckeye. We love you, my man.”

The NBA combine will be held May 16-22 in Chicago, and the draft will be June 23 in Brooklyn, New York.

5 perfect trade-back scenarios for Chicago Bears in 2022 NFL DraftRyan Heckmanon March 25, 2022 at 1:30 pm

Chicago Bears (David Banks-USA TODAY Sports)

As NFL free agency rages on, the Chicago Bears keep on keeping on with their careful and cautious approach.

Ryan Poles hasn’t gone out and made a blockbuster move to bring anybody to Chicago, but actually began the madness with quite the opposite, dealing Khalil Mack to the Los Angeles Chargers.

After signing a handful of second wave, mid-tier types, Poles likely looks to do most of his damage this offseason in the 2022 NFL Draft. The Bears have six picks in the draft, but don’t count on it staying that way.

While the previous regime, under Ryan Pace, traded up quite often, look for Poles and the Bears to trade back and acquire more picks. Poles did say, after all, that he’s always looking at ways to acquire additional draft capital.

The Chicago Bears have a variety of options to gain extra capital in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Chicago has two second-round picks to work with now, after the Mack trade. Those picks come at no. 39 and no. 48 overall. Obviously, the earlier pick is far more valuable and could net the Bears a good haul. But, there could also be a very, very good player available there who might have fallen out of the first round.

It’s a delicate situation, to say the least. But, let’s not even begin to start doubting Poles. He’s demonstrated that he is in this for the long haul, and that the Bears are going to be competitive and far more aggressive with 2023 in mind.

If the Bears wanted to trade back in this year’s draft, the options are endless.

Using the mock draft simulator from Pro Football Focus, these trades came together very well for the Bears.

Jonathan Toews gives a weird quote about his Blackhawks futureVincent Pariseon March 25, 2022 at 11:00 am

Everyone knows that the Chicago Blackhawks are going to execute a rebuild. Kyle Davidson is their new general manager and he seems to know what his plan is. One thing that will be interesting to see is what happens with Jonathan Toews.

He has the rest of this year and all of next year left on his deal. He is still a player that can help any team in the National Hockey League win but he is not worth the 10.5 million dollar cap hit anymore which makes him tough to trade for. The Hawks will likely see him stay through his contract.

Toews was asked about the future a couple of days ago and he didn’t give the response that a lot of people expected. He gave a quote that made it seem like his future after 2022-23 was going to be somewhere outside of Chicago.

That is not something that a lot of Blackhawks fans want to hear but it feels inevitable at this point. The Hawks need to move on and rebuild while Toews should probably end his career on a team that has a chance to win big.

Jonathan Toews on his future after trade deadline moves: “For the longest time, the thought never entered my mind to leave Chicago. In this case, you can’t help but picture yourself and what it’d be like to play for another team and what that experience would bring.” #Blackhawks

— Charlie Roumeliotis (@CRoumeliotis) March 23, 2022

Jonathan Toews doesn’t seem to be into the idea of a rebuilding Blackhawks team.

Toews used to feel like a player that was going to be in Chicago forever. Now, it is obvious that it isn’t going to happen. That is the beginning part of his quote in a nutshell as well. After that, he started talking about what it would be like to play with another team which is the most interesting part.

The Blackhawks should probably force this to happen. Toews did nothing wrong here but you need people on the team that are all in on rebuilding if you are actually going to go through with it. It doesn’t sound like he is into that idea too much.

He shouldn’t want to be in a rebuild either if we are being honest. He is a player on the other side of 30 that had a tough illness scare within the last year so he probably wants to have a chance to win in the back nine of his career. There is nothing wrong with that.

He is still going to go down as one of the team’s all-time greatest players. Nothing can undo what he did with the team helping them to three Stanley Cup championships in a span of six years. When Toews finally does move on, however, it is going to be a win for both sides.

Suns lock up top overall seed in Paul’s returnon March 25, 2022 at 5:03 am

DENVER — Chris Paul returned from a broken right thumb to help the Phoenix Suns wrap up the top seed in the NBA playoffs with a 140-130 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Thursday night.

Devin Booker led Phoenix with a season-high 49 points, and Paul had 17 points — 15 of them after halftime — and 13 assists in the Suns’ seventh straight victory.

The Suns, who won 11 of the 15 games while their 12-time All-Star point guard was out, lead the NBA with a 60-14 record and are trying to make the NBA Finals for a second straight season after losing to the Milwaukee Bucks last year.

The Nuggets got 28 points from Nikola Jokic, 23 from rookie Bones Hyland and 21 from Aaron Gordon. They shot 59.3% from the floor, but Phoenix was even hotter, hitting at a 60.5% clip.

Mikal Bridges added 22 points for the Suns, who trailed by nine points early on but took the lead for good on Bridges’ basket that made it 115-114 midway through the final quarter.

Booker was 16-of-25 from the field, while Bridges was 8-of-9. Booker, Bridges and Deandre Ayton have played well in Paul’s absence, and Ayton had a career-high 35 points Wednesday night in a comeback victory at Minnesota. He had 16 on Thursday night.

Paul returned roughly five weeks after breaking his right thumb in a game against the Houston Rockets on Feb. 16, just before the All-Star break.

“It’s good to have him back,” Suns coach Monty Williams said about an hour before tipoff. “He’s been working diligently to not just get back but play at a level he wants to play. I’m sure the guys are jacked up.”

“I knew he was close to coming back and I was just hoping that wouldn’t be tonight,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said while Paul was warming up at an empty Ball Arena.

The Suns were worried that Paul might miss the remainder of the regular season because of the thumb injury, but the veteran had been active in recent practices in a push to return.

With a nine-game lead over the second-place Memphis Grizzlies with eight games left for both teams, the Suns wrapped up the best record in the NBA and home-court advantage throughout the playoffs.

They also have the NBA-best road record at 30-6.

Chicago Bears look to be trading Nick Foles very soonRyan Heckmanon March 25, 2022 at 3:47 am

The transition from former Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Pace to new and current general manager Ryan Poles has been a sudden one. The Bears hardly have any Pace draft picks left at this point.

Poles has made some tough decisions in parting ways with veterans formerly acquired under the Pace administration, all while taking a “wait and see” approach during the first two weeks of free agency.

One of the remaining, notable players added by Pace is quarterback Nick Foles, who was previously acquired for a fourth-round pick. However, news that broke late Thursday night now fires up the rumor of Foles being traded once more.

The Bears agreed to terms with veteran backup quarterback Trevor Siemian on a 2-year deal, which means that Foles is likely on his way out one way or another.

After signing Trevor Siemian, are the Chicago Bears prepared to trade Nick Foles?

Excited for @TrevorSiemian agreeing to a 2 year deal with the @ChicagoBears

— Mike McCartney (@MikeMcCartney7) March 25, 2022

Foles has spent the last two seasons in Chicago after coming over from the Jacksonville Jaguars. He infamously took over for Mitchell Trubisky in a comeback victory over the Atlanta Falcons back in 2020, creating a whirlwind of quarterback controversy for the remainder of that season.

After being relegated to third string last year when the team signed Andy Dalton and drafted Justin Fields, Foles rarely played until late in the season.

Now that the Bears have Siemian in the fold, it appears their plans for Foles are cut and dry.

Chicago could designate Foles as a post-June 1 cut and save $3 million in the process. Or, they could opt to trade the former Super Bowl MVP to a team like the Washington Commanders, Seattle Seahawks or Carolina Panthers — all of whom have a rough quarterback situation at the moment.

One possibility that would, quite frankly, bring Bears fans to their knees with laughter, is if the team traded Foles to the Atlanta Falcons. Pace has joined Atlanta’s front office and the Falcons have since signed multiple former Bears over the past two weeks.

Atlanta did just trade Matt Ryan to the Indianapolis Colts, but signed Marcus Mariota to a 2-year deal. While Foles ending up in Atlanta would be hilarious, it’s not likely.

Still, if Poles could turn Foles into any asset whatsoever, at this point, it would be a huge victory. He’s clearly not part of this organization’s plans going forward and may have a better opportunity to see the field elsewhere.
