Blackhawks News: Toews and Kane reach an incredible milestoneVincent Pariseon December 19, 2022 at 8:18 pm

The Chicago Blackhawks are having a terrible season. They are the worst team in the National Hockey League and it is because of the fact that they want to rebuild their roster for the future. They have a plan and are trying to execute the plan by being bad right now.

Unfortunately, that makes things hard on players like Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane. They are each on expiring contracts that pay big money but losing is certainly not something that they are used to. It is possible that they are traded before the season is over.

On Sunday, however, they were able to have a day of celebration. Toews and Kane have been pretty linked for most of their career as the two forwards that led the Chicago Blackhawks to so much championship success.

Now, in this Sunday night game against the New York Rangers, they played in their 1000th game together. Each of them has missed some time (as does every hockey player) for different reasons over the years but they have now laced them up together in 1000 games.

Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane are Chicago Blackhawks legends for life.

This is the second most games played between a duo in the history of the Chicago Blackhawks. Only Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook (1069 games) have played in more games together. Those four are the best core in the history of the team so it is only fitting.

In those 1000 games that Toews and Kane have played together, they went 530-346-123 which is a lot of winning. Toews has 116 goals assisted by Kane and Kane has 110 goals assisted by Toews. Together, they have factored in 298 goals.

These are some pretty impressive numbers for two guys who are almost never on the same line as one another. They have always managed to find a way to work so well together even when they aren’t on the same line. For being so different, they have been so perfect for each other.

Unfortunately, the game didn’t go the way of the Blackhawks while these two were celebrating this milestone. The Blackhawks were beaten badly by the New York Rangers. The final score was 7-1 in a game where basically nothing went right.

The next game that these two are going to play each other will come on Wednesday when the Hawks host the Nashville Predators. It is unclear what the future holds for these two but it has certainly been very fun to have them playing together for these 1000 games.

3 Eagles free agents the Chicago Bears should pursue in the offseasonRyan Heckmanon December 19, 2022 at 2:00 pm

Week 15 saw the Chicago Bears drop their seventh game in a row, losing a close one to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Ultimately, Chicago went down by a score of 25-20 in a game where Justin Fields was once again spectacular at times.

At 3-11, Bears fans can definitively call it a season while still looking forward to seeing Fields close out the year that’s been his breakout campaign. Wins and losses haven’t mattered as much this year, as the Bears are looking forward to a big 2023 offseason.

Next spring, the Bears will have well over $100 million to spend on free agents. If Sunday was any hint at the type of talent they could bring in, the Bears would be wise to look at some of those Eagles coming up on the end of their contracts.

The Chicago Bears could sign Eagles defensive tackle Fletcher Cox in 2023

Fletcher Cox just turned 32 years old, but he continues to play at a high level and looks like he has a couple more seasons in him. After all, he’s been mostly healthy throughout his decade-long career, and fits a huge need for the Bears.

Cox is one of the better interior defensive linemen in the league, and has been for a while now. His ability to rush the passer from the inside is matched by few, but he’s also been great against the run for the majority of his career. It hasn’t been until the last two seasons that his run-stopping skills have declined just a bit.

Still, this is an area the Bears need to overhaul, and in a big way. They’ll likely add defensive linemen through the draft, at some point, but Cox is a great option for the Bears if they want a proven veteran, who stays healthy, and could give them a couple of solid seasons going forward.

3 Chicago Bears who have become cornerstone players for 2023Ryan Heckmanon December 19, 2022 at 12:00 pm

After Week 15, the Chicago Bears fell to 3-11 on the season. Losers of seven in a row, the Bears are essentially looking towards the future, as are the fans.

The game against Philly wasn’t all for naught, though, as some of the highlights include a few things we’re going to love seeing for years to come.

Justin Fields was a star. Kyler Gordon had a fumble recovery and interception. Some of the youth really shined on Sunday.

It was one of those games that made you think, “You know, the future of this team is indeed bright.” There are three particular players who have proven they are now franchise cornerstones going beyond this season and into 2023.

Braxton Jones has become a Chicago Bears franchise cornerstone

Dating back to the 2022 offseason, the offensive line has been one of the biggest concerns for the Bears and their fan base. General manager Ryan Poles didn’t make any sexy moves to try and fix the line last spring, but one of the best moves of the offseason came when the team drafted Braxton Jones in the fifth round this year.

Highest graded rookie Olineman.. (PFF)

1. Braxton Jones, 74.0 2. Jamaree Salyer, 69.9 3. Tyler Linderbaum, 69.7 4. Bernhard Raimann, 68.7 5. Zach Tom, 68.0 6. Abraham Lucas, 67.0

— Adam (@SmartfootbalI) December 7, 2022

Going into Week 15, Jones had become the highest-graded rookie offensive tackle by Pro Football Focus, and the number three overall graded offensive tackle in terms of run-blocking.

For a highly-drafted rookie, Jones’ season would already be remarkable. But the fact is, he was found late. This was arguably Poles’ best pick of the draft, and it came in the fifth round.

The Bears have their franchise left tackle, and didn’t have to spend a first-round pick, nor did they hand out a hefty free agent contract to do so.

Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields breaks 1,000 rushing yards, could break another recordRyan Heckmanon December 19, 2022 at 1:33 am

Michael Vick. Lamar Jackson. Justin Fields.

That’s the list.

The Chicago Bears quarterback hit a milestone Sunday when taking on the Philadelphia Eagles, hitting the 1,000-yard mark on the ground and becoming only the third quarterback of all-time to do so.

Fields’ day once again included what’s becoming his signature play — a wildly-entertaining, long run after escaping pressure.

— Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) December 18, 2022

It was a situation that seemed all too familiar for Bears fans; a 2nd and 27 and a graphic stretched across the screen detailing how much Fields had been under pressure already in the game. Fields was sacked three times in the first quarter and a half, and nearly a fourth time on the above run.

But like he has on many other occasions this season, Fields was able to escape and dazzle us with just another unbelievable run.

In just his second season, Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields has made his mark in NFL history.

Earlier this year, Fields broke a record once held by Michael Vick — the single-game rushing record by a quarterback. In an early November matchup between the Bears and Miami Dolphins, Fields ran for a whopping 178 yards, breaking Vick’s previous record of 173.

It was that day in NFL history which caused the infamous “I told him to stop it” quote from Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel — a quote that will forever go down as one of the most fun-loving, hilarious and genuine quotes we’ll ever see in a postgame presser.

It’s true, Fields has been a walking first down this year when using his legs. He’s averaged over 7.0 yards per carry on the season. It’s because of his dynamic skill set that the Bears have become the number one overall rushing team in the NFL.

There’s one more record for Fields to break this season: the single-season rushing record by a quarterback. That record is held by Lamar Jackson and sits at 1,206. Simple math tells us that Fields needs to average 69 rushing yards per game over the team’s final three games if he is going to break that mark.

The Bears are set to face the Buffalo Bills on Christmas Eve, followed by games against the Lions and Vikings. Detroit and Minnesota, specifically, have been two of the worst defenses in football over the past six weeks. If Fields stays hot, he could hold yet another record by season’s end. Talk about a sophomore breakout.

Chicago Bears stay close with one of the NFL’s best teamsVincent Pariseon December 18, 2022 at 10:43 pm

The Chicago Bears are one of the worst teams in the National Football League. A top-five draft pick is imminent which is nice but it is hard to sit through. It will all be worth it if they make the right decision when the time is right.

With the 12-1 Philadelphia Eagels in town, it seemed like a matchup that could make the Bears look even worse than they usually do. It is hard to play against teams like the Bears if you are the Eagles and that was proven on Sunday.

The Eagles are good enough to beat the Bears by multiple scores on most occasions but the Bears stayed in it. They ended up losing the game by a final score of 25-20 which is great news for Chicago in every way.

They improved their draft stock by losing which is honestly the most important thing at this point but it was nice to see them stay in it with a team like that. Imagine what they might be able to do if they had some weapons and a better defense.

The Chicago Bears lost to the Philadelphia Eagles by a final score of 25-20.

Justin Fields played really well which is also really important. It is pretty obvious that Fields is the guy at this point but he is extremely limited due to the team around him. Seeing him do these things against one of the best teams in the NFL speaks volumes.

Matt Eberflus and his staff deserve credit for helping this Bears organization rebuild. They don’t have enough talent to compete for a lot of wins but they do play the game the right way which is good.

If they do add this talent in the upcoming draft and free agency period, they could be a really good team. When the talent meets that effort level, they will certainly win games.

Now, after this good game against one of the league’s best, they will have an even harder task next week against the Buffalo Bills.

The things that Josh Allen does to a defense are scary so the Bears might struggle here but a good effort like this one against the Eagles would be amazing. Getting this team to become a Super Bowl contender is more of a marathon than a sprint. Keep running, Bears.

Fantasy baseball: Will Dansby Swanson still be a fantasy star on the Cubs?on December 18, 2022 at 2:20 am

Dansby Swanson produced career-bests in batting average (.277), RBI (96), stolen bases (18) and runs scored (99) in 2022 and played in all 162 games AP Photo/Matt Slocum

New Chicago Cubs SS Dansby Swanson was a fantasy star during the 2022 season, even though he did not get the same money or commitment as the other top free agent shortstops did this offseason. He earned a lucrative seven-year deal after finishing the 2022 season as the No. 2 shortstop on the Player Rater — behind new Phillies SS Trea Turner — and sixth in points formats. He picked the right time for his best season, producing career-bests in batting average (.277), RBI (96), stolen bases (18) and runs scored (99) as well as playing in all 162 games.

While Swanson was more valuable in fantasy than both Carlos Correa (Giants) and Xander Bogaerts (Padres), he does not offer quite the same career pedigree and perceived statistical upside. In seven big league seasons with the Braves, Swanson was an above-average hitter by OPS+ in only one full season (2022) and only missed three games over the past three seasons. Well, ask a Correa investor if durability matters in fantasy. It sure does.

There’s still time to play Fantasy Basketball this season! With leagues tipping off every Monday, it’s the perfect time to get started. Create or join a league today.

Play for free! “Not Too Late” draft guide

Some may presume Swanson is in for major regression going from a contending team to the Cubs but let’s not be so hasty. He figures to hit in one of the top lineup spots, and while the offense around him may pale in comparison to what he boasted in 2022, he still has 52 home runs and 27 stolen bases over the past two seasons while occasionally hitting near the bottom of the lineup. He’s a safe, reliable hitter with the potential to keep hitting for power and perhaps even steal more bases.

If you’re worried about runs scored, you shouldn’t. The Cubs struggled to score runs last season but things appear to be much improved moving forward, with Swanson and Nico Hoerner likely at the top of the lineup, followed by a potential outfield of Ian Happ, Seiya Suzuki and newcomer Cody Bellinger, plus Patrick Wisdom and perhaps rookie 1B Matt Mervis. Why can’t Swanson continue to improve and perhaps score 100 runs if he stays healthy? He should be a top-50 fantasy pick in roto leagues, and top-75 in points formats.,

Don’t worry about the Braves, who likely turn to 2B Vaughn Grissom to handle shortstop duties. Despite playing only 22 games at the Double-A level and none at Triple-A, Grissom was a rookie revelation until mid-September, when he lost his grip on a starting role. Statistically, he may be even better than Swanson soon. Grissom hit .315 in more than 1,000 minor-league plate appearances and displayed modest power and excellent speed. Atlanta will be just fine.
