How to Spell Laughter: Recapping Molly Shannon’s Chicago Humanities Festival Q&A with Tim Meadows

Last week, comedian, actress and author Molly Shannon took the stage to a full house of raucous applause for an hour-long Q&A about her new memoir, “Hello Molly!” Fellow comedian, SNL alum and friend, Chicago native Tim Meadows interviewed and moderated the event. Randolph Street’s Harris Theater for Music and Dance hosted the Chicago Humanities Festival (CHF) soiree, with its subterranean stage sneaking by on your right like a cyclist on the lake path. I swear I’ve walked past it about 200 times without realizing, but this was my night to finally go inside and get educated.

Fans waited outside in the rain hours before the show to pick the best seats in the house.

My feelings about “An Evening with Molly Shannon and Tim Meadows” can best be expressed in a monologue by author and comedian Molly Shannon herself, from this very evening. When asked if she gets sick of doing her ‘Superstar move,’ she said, “I could do it every day, 50 times a day! I never get sick of it!”

In the spirit of Molly Shannon being the most adorable, clever and hilarious famous human, let’s do this in the cutest composition style: acrostic.

M aking People Laugh

So affable, bubbly and spirited, it seems rare to find Molly Shannon in a bad mood -at least outwardly. Perhaps it is true that the people who have been through the most in life, never want others to feel badly, and inclusion through laughter is certainly Shannon’s approach. “Hello Molly!” shares personal stories about waitressing and selling gym memberships to pay tuition throughout college at NYU’s Tisch drama program, all to get the chance to make people laugh.

Though she worried the wealthier students were able to take better advantage of all that college had to offer without full-time jobs, this grind ultimately led to her breakout performance: a clown using a fake penis as a prop. Shannon’s entire acting class grade would be based on this performance, dressed as an Italian Arlecchino. “It should not be too rehearsed, and should be spontaneous and organic,” Shannon said in her memoir. “The day came and I had not rehearsed at all. The only think I had done was sew my fake penis, which I have to say was really fun!” Ultimately, she made the class cry laughing, got a standing ovation and “found herself as an artist and a performer.” She learned she could make people “really laugh,” and not to over-rehearse for her personal style. As noted in the book, this is precisely what she ended up doing years later on SNL, but she didn’t yet know she was building the foundation. It was always about making people laugh.

Molly Shannon as Jeannie Darcy, SNL

Toward the end of her Chicago Q&A she touched on her character “Jeannie Darcy,” who she performed on SNL just before leaving show. Darcy displayed many negative tropes of a “female comic,” from raunchy vibrator jokes to period banter. Darcy often performed in ridiculous settings like a nursing home where people were dying around her, and always used her catch phrase, “don’t even get me started!” Shannon explained that at this point, she was feeling such pressure to make people laugh, she made this character to channel it.

Sadly, Shannon’s mother passed away tragically when she was only four-years-old. Her baby sister, Katie, unfortunately died in the same car accident. She and her sister were raised by their father in the Cleveland area. In this live Chicago Q&A, she explained that during the “Darcy” era, it was then that she realized: no matter who she made laugh, or what awards she won, her mom would never be able to laugh, or tell her she did a good job. It was this, Shannon explained, that she was subconsciouly chasing.

O n Friendship

Molly Shannon is a timeless comedy icon, especially for ’90s kids who grew up with her characters. She could make me cry laughing as a kid, as well as my parents and all my teachers too. Thanks to her longevity, she remains an icon for all ages with current roles in “The White Lotus,” “The Other Two,” “Divorce,” and much more. From the time she started out on the public stage at SNL, Shannon has displayed relatable, hilarious characters that made funny women visible. She was pretty, but that wasn’t her focus, and she took risks in physical comedy not seen since the Lucille Ball years. As a young person, maybe most importantly, you could just tell in her eyes she was kind. Her jokes were just for laughs, and she had a big heart.

Growing up, I was fortunate to have a *middle school best friend.* Young people who were lucky enough to have a *middle school best friend,* especially in the ’90s, have had an amazing run recently with Pen15 and Fuller House among other shows. However, if you grew up watching SNL with your sixth/seventh grade bestie when you were supposed to be in bed on scrambled basement TV… you’ll love “Hello Molly!” Throughout her memoir, and throughout this evening with Tim Meadows, Shannon frequently mentioned her childhood best friend, Ann, who was shy to everyone else, but connected with Molly over early improv, trying to make each other laugh. They mimicked their neighbors, made up inside jokes and even took local bus trips together as young children to a nearby hospital ward to see what it would be like to be a doctor who just got out of surgery…or at least have a sandwich near them.

Meadows laughs and looks on as Shannon acts out playing with her childhood best friend, Ann, who was too shy to face her when being creative.

Throughout the evening, Shannon made it clear how friendship has shaped her life. I felt like I knew her friends Alison and Ann after reading her memoir. So many of her funniest personal moments she’s presented as characters publicly, came initially from love. This includes her friend Debbie Palermo calling her ‘Superstar’ each time before her stage show, and then Molly busting the phrase out on a whim for her friend on live TV the first time she got the character on SNL, which led to a veritable franchise of ‘Superstar’ success. In her memoir, she spoke of supporting pals from her past, like her college roommate who was considered an eccentric, ‘real witch’ to their peers. Shannon said in her memoir, “I like that witch. And you know what? I’m gonna be friends with that witch. And she and I are gonna go to the East Village for Chinese food, on Sunday night, and we’re gonna split a bottle of wine, and sit and talk… that sweet, smart witch and I. And that is that.”

One friend mentioned throughout the event and the book, was Shannon’s dad. He put her in what she called “The Jim Shannon School of Acting” from a young age, where she’d try to trick her friends that someone was on the phone for them while over to hang out. “Ann, it’s for you,” Shannon pretended, changing her voice into her father’s deeper tone saying back, “nope, not believable enough, do it again!”

Molly showcases the Jim Shannon school of acting.

Seeing Shannon high kick on stage and laugh with her old friend Tim Meadows felt like a warm hug from an old friend. She was so fit, so petite and so flexible, it felt pretty unbelievable that she is 57-years-old. Even though Shannon summed up her relationship with childhood BFF Ann in this quote from the Chicago show, for many of us, it could apply to our relationships with the characters themselves, like Mary Katherine Gallagher, Sally O’Malley and so many more: “I think when you’re connected like that from your childhood, it doesn’t matter how much time passes, you can always pick up again. Our lives have gone in different directions…but we’re still really close. Like sisters.” Thank you to Molly Shannon for creating the landscapes for so many silly, special memories.

Molly showed Chicago how Sally O’Malley can stretch, kick and stretch.

L et’s Talk About Tim Meadows

Tim Meadows looks AMAZING and is still The Ladies’ Man. He has recently hosted other interviews around town, notably at the Music Box with Bob Odenkirk. His wit and comedic timing remain bastions of crossing taboo thresholds with endearing vibes. He’ll make you think, make you laugh and if you were in the Chicago audience, definitely asked you for weed, but not in an annoying way. If you’re reading this, Tim; I really hope you got what you needed, king. He also reminded the audience of his deadpan Dr. Poop sketch that broke Will Ferrell, Chris Parnell and Molly Shannon all at once. If you haven’t seen that one for awhile, or ever, go ahead and look it up.

Tim Meadows at the Chicago Humanities Festival.

Thanks to his close relationship with Shannon from working together for years on SNL, Meadows as her moderator felt intimate and casual. The pair got comfortable early, mostly discussing topics from Shannon’s memoir. Meadows cranked the heat when asking questions more personal to him specifically, noting how it felt terrible when only some of the SNL cast made it on the cover of Rolling Stone, leaving the rest of the cast feeling a bit cast aside. He asked Shannon, one of four who did make the cover, what she remembered from that time. This could have led them down a dramatic road, but Shannon instead recalled how fun the experience was, mentioned cover photographer Mark Seliger by name and didn’t once buckle.

Rolling Stone, Issue 774 (11.27.97)

The exchange felt like an authentic call and response from both Meadows and Shannon, enhancing the unique corners of conversation explored only in Chicago, with different moderators along each stop on Shannon’s book tour. Meadows touched on how hard the skit “Dog Show” used to make him laugh at SNL table readings, stating frequently to get her skits on the show that Shannon would use for support, “but Tim laughed!” One time, the two went for pedicures together, which Meadows said was his only time doing this with a woman he wasn’t sleeping with. The Ladies’ Man, forever and ever, amen.

Lovingly, Meadows held up Shannon’s new book to start the show, saying the first thing he did was look to find where she wrote about him, getting a huge laugh from the crowd. She of course, did mention him, and the mutual respect and rapport shared between them was a lot of fun to experience. It felt as if we in the audience were just guests for two old friends catching up. Kudos to the Chicago Humanity Festival for cultivating such a show.

L ove & Loss

Lots of funny people are actually sad. I think we all know that and yet, it can be easy to forget when they make you laugh all the time. Part of growing up is learning about love and loss in due time, but since Shannon went through such trauma at such a young age, it was like she had become a woman when she was only four. In her memoir, she says the doctors told her older sister, Mary, “You have to kind of be the mom now.” She was six.

Knowing there is an end someday for all of us is daunting, but it also brings humanity together as a great equalizer. Reflecting on this through Shannon’s comedy surfaced many emptions. Through her memoir, learning that her sisters names were Mary and Katherine, and the head priest for her first grade St Patrick’s Day show was Father Gallagher, showed how what we love, and what we hold close to us inevitably who we become, and we share with the world, for better or for worse. Shannon could have done it differently, but she turned sadness and tragedy into a conquering story of resilience, as radiant protagonist, Superstar and iconic role model.

Y our Birthmark Looks Like Chi-cago

Superstar, 1999

As a young high school student, Shannon auditioned for NYU at a Chicago hotel, as told in her memoir. Making a fun road-trip out of it from Cleveland, she went with her best friend and their dads. She clinched her position in the competitive program w a dramatic monologue. Mary Katherine Gallagher’s soon-to-sprout roots were definitely planted deeper that day.

Chicago loved having Molly Shannon, hosted by Tim Meadows. One audience member told Shannon she has been Mary Katherine Gallagher every year for Halloween since 2009 (12 years), and asked her if she’d ‘do Superstar,’ to which Shannon burst into form (pictured below).

Banchero makes NBA leap after 1 year at Dukeon April 20, 2022 at 11:44 pm

Duke’s Paolo Banchero is leaping to the NBA after one season as a candidate to be the No. 1 overall draft pick.

Banchero announced his decision in a social media video Wednesday, with the school saying the freshman planned to hire an agent.

“It has always been a dream of mine to play at Duke, and it has always been a dream of mine to play in the NBA,” Banchero said. “Duke has prepared me for that on and off the court. … It has been a great journey and I’m blessed to be a part of The Brotherhood for life.”

Banchero had been viewed as a likely one-and-done player even before he stepped foot on the Durham, North Carolina, campus from Seattle. Blessed with a strong frame, size and perimeter skills, Banchero went on to become a third-team All-America pick by the The Associated Press, and ranks No. 2 in ESPN’s latest list of draft prospects.

The 6-foot-10, 250-pound Banchero recently was projected as the No. 3 overall pick in the latest mock draft by ESPN’s Jonathan Givony.

The headliner on a talented recruiting class, Banchero averaged 17.2 points and 7.8 rebounds, cracking the 20-point mark 15 times while failing to reach double figures only twice in 39 games. He helped Duke reach now-retired Hall of Famer Mike Krzyzewski’s record 13th Final Four while also winning the program’s first outright Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season title since 2006.

In a statement from the school, Krzyzewski said Banchero is “absolutely ready to attack the next phase” of his career.

“He is so dynamic, explosive and versatile – a model player in today’s NBA game. He did whatever we asked at a very high level,” Krzyzewski said. “I loved having him and his family in our program and wish him all the best as his professional career begins.”

Banchero also took advantage of opportunities for college athletes to cash in on their fame with endorsements, which began last summer with the NCAA permitted athletes to profit from use of their name, image and likeness (NIL).

In Banchero’s case, he worked with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) for marketing deals and got deals that included becoming the first player featured in the latest NBA 2K video game as well as a basketball trading card from Panini as part of a multi-year deal.

Now he’s off to make even more money in the NBA.

Banchero is the second Duke player to announce an early jump to the NBA, following 7-foot-1 sophomore Mark Williams two days earlier.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Chicago Bulls forward Patrick Williams not scared of GiannisRyan Heckmanon April 20, 2022 at 6:14 pm

Sunday night, the Chicago Bulls looked like they were going to get trounced by the Milwaukee Bucks in Game 1 of their first round playoff matchup.

With the Bucks storming out to a 16-point lead early on and Giannis Antetokounmpo stacking his box score in a hurry, things looked bleak. However, the Bulls’ defense stepped up and allowed them to get back in the game.

Though Chicago lost by a score of 93-86, they had to feel as though they accomplished something. On a night where the Bulls shot just 33 percent from the field, they were able to put the clamps on Giannis and the Bucks in the second half.

Game 2 might be a different story, though, especially if Giannis happens to hear what Patrick Williams said Wednesday morning.

Chicago Bulls forward Patrick Williams tried to play it cool, but may end up regretting his comments about Giannis Antetokounmpo.

When asked about how to prepare for a player like Giannis on Wednesday morning, Williams told the media:

“Same as you get ready for anybody else. First of all, don’t be scared. I feel like a lot of people in this league are scared or nervous to guard guys like that… He puts his pants on the same way I do. He’s good, but he’s not God.” (h/t Rob Schaefer)

So, instead of acknowledging the elite level player that Giannis is, Williams went the opposite direction. He almost made it seem as though Giannis is nothing to worry about and that he’s no more than just a guy.

Let us not forget what Giannis did to three Bulls players by himself on Sunday night. This is no ordinary man, and Williams knows it.

Giannis with the assist & the dunk. ? pic.twitter.com/0glHn76pwf

— Milwaukee Bucks (@Bucks) April 17, 2022

Whether Williams was simply trying to psych himself up or not, the words he spoke will not go unheard in that Milwaukee locker room.

Bulls fans were already afraid that Sunday night was the closest they would get to stealing a game on the Bucks’ home court, but these comments by Williams may have sealed their fate to go down 2-0, heading back to Chicago.

This won’t be a game where just Williams needs to step up against Giannis, though. It’s going to take a group effort defensively. And, the Bulls need more from DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine.

Will the Bulls be able to hang with the Bucks again, or will Milwaukee roll in Game 2? We’re only hours from finding out, now.

4 Way Too Early MLB All-Star Predictions for the Cubs & SoxDrew Krieson April 20, 2022 at 1:17 pm

Don’t worry. We are fully aware that the 2022 MLB season started less than two weeks ago. But here in Chicago, the excitement for the return of baseball is always doubled with our two hometown teams. These teams are exactly who we’re here to talk about, and more specifically, which players from the Cubs and Sox roster we think might have a shot at a 2022 MLB All-Star selection. The 2022 MLB All-Star game won’t take place until July 19th, which is about three months away. A lot can happen between now and then. But, that doesn’t mean we can’t speculate who will be selected this season, even though we’re barely 10 games through it.

So, without wasting anymore time, let’s dive right into our Cubs and White Sox MLB All-Star predictions for 2022!

Liam Hendriks

Up first is two-time MLB All-Star and relief pitcher for the White Sox, Liam Hendriks. Hendriks stats on paper this early in the season might not look the best. Opposing batters are hitting .423 off of him and through five appearances he’s posted a 5.40 ERA. However, despite the struggles, he’s still at 4 saves out of the 5 games played.

The slow start to the season is nothing new for Hendriks, and he and the White Sox pitching coaches think that he’s really close to turning things around. In our minds, the sooner they’re right about that, the better. Once Hendriks is back to his true self, we have no question that the two-time defending Relief Pitcher of the Year will find himself back in the MLB All-Star Game.

Seiya Suzuki

This next name is a newcomer to the MLB, but he’s certainly not playing like one to start the season. Our next 2022 MLB All-Star prediction is 27-year old outfielder, Seiya Suzuki of the Chicago Cubs. Up until this past offseason, Suzuki competed in professional baseball internationally as a player for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp in the Nippon Professional Baseball league in Japan. His signing stirred up plenty of excitement, as Suzuki inked the fifth largest contract in Cubs history with a five-year deal. And now that he’s seeing some regular season action, we’re starting to think it was worth it. Through 11 Cubs games, Suzuki has a whopping .414 batting average, and he even went on a 9 game hitting streak that ended last night against the Rays. If he can keep up half that pace by the time June and July roll around, we’ll be shocked if his name isn’t on the NL All-Star roster list.

Dylan Cease

The third of our 2022 MLB All-Star predictions is another one of our favorite Southside pitchers: Dylan Cease!

In his now four year career, Cease has yet to make an MLB All-Star game appearance. But, he’s shown plenty of promise, and this season might just be the year he breaks through. Through 2 starts, Cease has pitched 10.2 innings, with a video game-esque stat line of 16 strikeouts and a 1.69 ERA through both games. He’s been on fire every second he’s on the mound in 2022. Plus, the White Sox coaching staff plans to keep him firing on all cylinders as they keep a close eye on his pitch count this early in the year. As Cease works his arm into, each successful outing will only boost his confidence going forward. And with his performance so far, there’s no reason he won’t find himself making his first MLB All-Star appearance.

Tim Anderson

Last, but certainly not least, is everyone’s favorite shortstop, Mr. TA7. We have every bit of confidence that this MLB All-Star prediction comes through in 2022. Anderson found himself sneaking into last year’s All-Star game due to Carlos Correa opting not to play. But this year, we think he has a shot at making it without the gimmicks. With the way Tim Anderson is playing through the first nine games of the White Sox season, he certainly has a shot. Anderson actually sat out the first two games of this year due to a lingering suspension from last season that was the result of making contact with an umpire.

If he can keep his base-running clean, his fielding sharp, and his offensive output solid, then TA7 might just find himself in back-to-back MLB All-Star Games. Only time will tell if our MLB All-Star predictions come true, and we’ll be talking about all the Chicago Cubs and White Sox action as it unfolds in 2022!

Betting tips for Wednesday’s first-round matchupson April 20, 2022 at 3:43 pm

Jump ahead: Game of the night | Picks and props | Analytics edge

All odds are provided by Caesars Sportsbook.

What you need to know for Wednesday’s playoff games

Rousing Rivalry: Can Kevin Durant surpass his point prop of 29.5 against a stingy Celtics defense? After all, he has topped this number just once in three meetings with Boston during the regular season. Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart could be a smart bet for two turnovers created after producing at least two stocks in four of five meetings with Brooklyn this season. The Celtics are 24-14 against the spread when playing a team with a winning record this season, including Sunday’s thrilling last-second win. The Nets, meanwhile, are 14-6 ATS when seeking to avenge a loss to an opponent on the road.

Slick Nic: While Game 1 of the Nets-Celtics series was an instant classic with star players making play after play, Nic Claxton was also a solid contributor. Nothing he does is flashy, but on his 23rd birthday, he converted 6 of 8 shots and pulled down a team-best eight rebounds in 31 minutes. Claxton’s minutes count is encouraging against a Celtics defense without Robert Williams III. Efficiency is something we can count on for Claxton as he has made 51 of 65 shots (78.5%) over the past month. It’s not exciting, but Claxton is a live DFS play and worth a look in the various prop markets in this spot.

Bank On Boucher: With Scottie Barnes currently questionable, Chris Boucher should see an increase in usage. He put up 17 points and 8 rebounds (with a pair of blocks) in 30 minutes Monday, and a similar stat line is expected Wednesday night. He played 30 minutes 14 times during the regular season and averaged 17.2 PPG with 10.6 RPG over that span. His double-double prop is worth a look once Barnes’ status is official. Boucher’s expanded role also looks good for those playing the three-game DFS slate as well.

Collaborative Creation: With Lonzo Ball out for the season, the Bulls still don’t have a traditional creator in their rotation. Distribution duties tend to shift between several key Chicago contributors. In Game 1 against the Bucks, the Bulls saw four players post at least 10 potential assists. DeMar DeRozan led the pack with 14 potential assists in Sunday’s loss to Milwaukee. DeRozan’s assist prop currently sits at 5.5, evidence there is untapped upside in his betting prop market.

Game of the night

Brooklyn Nets at Boston Celtics
7 p.m. ET, Barclays Center, Brooklyn

Line: Celtics (-3.5)
Money line: Celtics (-160), Nets (+140)
Total: 226 points
BPI Projected Total: 219.4 points
BPI Win%: Celtics (87.4%)

Key players ruled out: Ben Simmons

Best bet: Nets ML (+140). Kevin Durant is better than how he played Sunday, and the Nets still scored 114 points on the best defense in the league, despite his struggles. However, Brooklyn’s supporting cast must step up after Seth Curry, Patty Mills and Bruce Brown were relatively ineffective in Game 1. Kyrie Irving feeds off the Boston crowd and without Robert Williams III on the court, he will continue to stay hot. The Nets’ defense has improved over the past month, holding the C’s to just 19 points in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game. It is not comparable to the Celtics? Absolutely not, but I still like Brooklyn to win Game 2 outright. — Erin Dolan

play0:28

Doug Kezirian looks at the best bet for the first quarter of Game 3 of the 76ers-Raptors series on Wednesday.

Best bet: Durant over 29.5 points. Durant had one of his worst scoring games of the season in Game 1, requiring 24 field goal attempts to score 23 points and losing six turnovers. While the Celtics have an excellent defense, Durant was visibly out of rhythm, missing a lot of shots that he normally makes. He shot 50% or better from the floor in his two games against the Celtics during the regular season, and dropped 37 points on 21 shots in his last regular-season outing. I fully expect a huge bounce-back game from Durant, who knows the Nets need this game to have a chance to win the series. — Andre Snellings

Best bet: Durant over 29.5 points. Durant has averaged nearly 39 points in his first game following a loss. The only exception was an 11-point performance in 2019 when he ruptured an Achilles. All of the pressure is on Durant tonight. He knows that he must play better in Game 2 if the Nets want to win the series. — Eric Moody

Breaking down the rest of the slate

Chicago Bulls at Milwaukee Bucks
9:30 p.m. ET, Fiserv Forum, Milwaukee

Line: Bucks (-10)
Money line: Bucks (-550), Bulls (+400)
Total: 225 points
BPI Projected Total: 221.2 points
BPI Win%: Bucks (88.5%)

Key players ruled out: none

Best bet: Bucks (-10). The Bucks are 5-0 against the Bulls this season and won their last two regular-season matchups by a combined 49 points, and dominated the early part of Game 1 before the Bulls were able to fight their way back in the second half. The Bucks scored 34 points in the first quarter of Game 1, then managed only 59 points over the next three quarters, which is extremely out of character for a Bucks team that was third in the NBA with 115.5 points scored per game. Look for them to revert to their norm and put a big number on the board Wednesday. — Snellings

Best bet: Bulls (+10). The Bulls’ shooting woes were well documented in Game 1. It’s easy to assume Chicago had problems with Milwaukee’s defense, but it’s also worth noting that the Bucks’ defensive philosophy is to take away the inside and force opponents to shoot jumpers. The Bulls should shoot better and cover the spread in Game 2. — Moody

Best bet: DeMar DeRozan over 27.5 points. DeRozan made only six out of 25 shots from the field Sunday due to the Bucks’ wings harassing him. Milwaukee prefers opponents to shoot jumpers, and after the game DeRozan vowed he would never have a shooting night like that again. I believe him. During the regular season, DeRozan averaged 28 PPG and shot 50.2% from the field, so it’s safe to expect a bounce-back performance.

Philadelphia 76ers at Toronto Raptors
8 p.m. ET, Scotiabank Arena, Toronto

Line: 76ers (-1.5)
Money line: 76ers (-125), Raptors (+105)
Total: 216.5 points
BPI Projected Total: 218.9 points
BPI Win%: Raptors (60.2%)

Key players ruled out: Matisse Thybulle

Questionable: Gary Trent Jr., Scottie Barnes

play0:28

Doug Kezirian looks at the best bet for the first quarter of Game 3 of the 76ers-Raptors series on Wednesday.

Best bet: 76ers -1.5. The Raptors have shown they have no way of stopping Joel Embiid. This trend should continue for the 76ers on the road as well. The 76ers were a stronger team on the road than at home all season, finishing with a 27-14 road record and 24-17 home record. The spread for this game is too small, especially with Philadelphia on a roll. — Moody

Analytics edge

BPI highest projected totals

1. Milwaukee Bucks (117.7 points)
2. Boston Celtics (116.0 points)
3. Toronto Raptors (111.2 points)

BPI lowest projected totals

1. Brooklyn Nets (103.3 points)
2. Chicago Bulls (104.3 points)
3. Philadelphia 76ers (108.0 points)

BPI top probability to win (straight up)

1. Milwaukee Bucks (88.2%)
2. Boston Celtics (87.4%)

Iowa brought their power bats to stadium yesterday. Jared Young hit a two-run homer in his first at bat, and then jacked another in his next at bat as he went back-to-back with Brennen Davis, who showed off his opposite field power.

I didn’t get a chance to watch any of the action from this game, so I can’t report on how they looked doing it, but at least by the scorecard, Robert Gsellman and Eric Stout continue to make a case for eventual call ups to Chicago. The combined to strike out six over seven shutout innings.

For those wondering how the pace of play initiatives are going in the Minors so far:

Not as fast as the one @JeffPassan listed below, but the @IowaCubs and @LouisvilleBats finished their game tonight in 2 hours, 11 minutes.

Was on a 1:50 pace through seven innings. Game still had 5 homers and 9 combined runs.

Game Recap

Rocket City hit a pair of homers, the Smokies hit none.

High-A

South Bend 3, Beloit 0

Game Recap

South Bend was in control of this one from the start. Chris Clarke suffered through some inconsistency (and cold weather) his first two times out this year, but he was locked in yesterday. He tossed the five shutout innings of the game, followed by three from Max Bain. Hunter Bigge polished things off in the 9th for his first save.

In the bottom of the 1st, Fabian Pertuz doubled then was eventually knocked in by Alexander Canario. It was all the offense the pitching staff required but Pertuz would knock in a run in a two-run 8th to give Bigge some breathing room in the 9th.

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

I didn’t check for certain, but Chris Clarke may be the first starter in the Cubs system to earn a win this year. Five inning starts have been rare/non-existent the first couple of times through rotations at every affiliate.

Max Bain threw 43 pitches in what is expected to be his final piggyback outing. He’ll rejoin the Cubs six-man rotation next time through. He’s throwing in the mid-90s with a cleaner and more athletic delivery this year. Hopefully this will lead to better command and more consistency with his velo and secondary offerings. He’s got prototypical starter’s size and arsenal. This year will be a test of his stamina.

It is good to see Hunter Bigge back healthy and locked in after a rough 2021 when his stuff never seemed to match expectations set in his 2019 debut. He’s paired mid-90s with a hammer breaking ball in the early going.

Sometimes, I like just to see some old country hardball. This Qualifies pic.twitter.com/wBVcLdZXuT

— Todd (@CubsCentral08)

April 20, 2022

Danis Correa also pitched two shutout innings in the same EXST game as Alec Mills. He struck out five. Since he is not getting stretched out as a starter like Mills I would assume the hard throwing righty will be ready to join the South Bend bullpen soon.

Low-A

Delmarva 8, Myrtle Beach 3

Game Recap

Five errors helped doom Myrtle Beach in this game. They committed three of them, and Luis Devers also uncorked a wild pitch, during a seven-run 1st for Delmarva which buried the Pelicans early in this one.

The rest of the game featured some fun though.

Pete Crow-Armstrong hit an inside-the-park home run:

And Riley Martin continued to make Low-A hitters look foolish, punching out 10 in just 4.1 innings of shutout work.

Here is his 10th K. Of course, they waited until his final batter to show him pitching from the centerfield camera. This is a pretty nice curve pic.twitter.com/CrKfzojXQr

— Todd (@CubsCentral08)

April 20, 2022

Martin is shaping up as an intriguing find by the Cubs scouting staff. Selected in the 6th round last year out of tiny Quincy (I’m not sure if it is a college or university in Illinois). Even as a IL native I have never heard of it. The Cubs signed the lefty for a paltry $1,000 bonus. He’s only made 11 pro appearances but he’s already struck out 41 batters in just 25 innings, including 20 in 10.1 innings this season.

It’s aggravating that there wasn’t a good camera angle for the broadcast last night, nor for his previous outing this year, but from some previous viewings it seems Martin works in the 92-94 range, though I wonder if he may have increased that this year. He’s got a pretty good breaking ball as well. I had him pegged as an interesting arm to follow this year, and so far he is justifying that, and then some.

With the way the Cubs are stretching him out they must see some future value with him. It is typically a move the Cubs make with college closers (Riley Thompson, Michael McAvene are two in recent memory). In addition to Martin, they are doing the same this year with Zac Leigh Frankie Scalzo, Jr. It doesn’t always mean the club expects them to remain starters long term but it does force the pitcher to expand their stuff, gives them more innings to hone their mechanics/command, and more opportunities to work through jams.

Top Performers

Riley Martin: 4.1 IP, H, 0 R, 2 BB, 10 K (0.87)Jarod Wright: 3 IP, 2 H, R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K (3.00)Pete Crow-Armstrong: 1-4, HR (1), R, 2 RBI (.217)Ethan Hearn: 1-4, HR (1), R, RBI (.148)Kevin Alcantara: 2-4 (.261)

Illinois star big man Cockburn to enter NBA drafton April 20, 2022 at 1:59 pm

Illinois junior Kofi Cockburn will enter the 2022 NBA draft and forgo his remaining college eligibility.

“I’m closing one of the most amazing chapters of my life,” Cockburn told ESPN on Wednesday. “I’m proud of what we accomplished in college, but I am not sure it can get much better than that. It’s a scary challenge now and I’m excited to rise to the occasion and try and prove people wrong.

“Thinking back to where I was three years ago when I entered college — people would be amazed to see the progress I made in becoming a two-time All-American. I’m planning on doing the same exact thing in my professional career: pushing my game to new heights.”

Cockburn already entered the NBA draft twice in 2020 and 2021 and cannot withdraw his name from consideration for a third time, according to league rules, making him ineligible to return to college basketball.

“I’m 100% in now,” Cockburn said. “I’m not going back to college. I’m signing with agent Todd Ramasar. I’ve tested the waters enough, I’m 100% dedicated to going all the way.”

Cockburn, a consensus first-team All-American, was the only player in college basketball to average over 20 points and 10 rebounds per game this past season. He led Illinois to a 23-10 record and a Big Ten championship, which the Fighting Illini shared with Wisconsin. It was the first time Illinois won a regular-season title since 2005.

“If you watched us play, we had a lot of ups and downs,” Cockburn said. “A lot of injuries, COVID, players coming in and out — it was tough. We had to adjust. People are going to be wondering years from now what it was like to play college basketball during a pandemic.

“It was hard to be an All-American two years in a row. We proved to be winners regardless. We had the most wins in the last three years in the Big Ten of any team. People will remember that forever. NBA teams know I’m a winner now. I love to have fun, but I’m a competitor. It wasn’t about my individual goals. Winning was always the priority. That speaks for itself.”

A 7-foot-1 big man born in Kingston, Jamaica, Cockburn was named first-team All-Big Ten for the second straight season. He was a finalist for several player of the year awards, including the Wooden and Naismith as well as the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, presented to the nation’s best center.

“My dream is to be one of the best players in the NBA, especially from Jamaica,” Cockburn said. “I’m playing for something bigger than myself. This is for my country, my people.”

Cockburn, the No. 89 prospect in the ESPN 100, established himself as one of the most physically imposing players in the college game the past three years, with his 7-foot-4 wingspan, 9-foot-3 standing reach and 285-pound frame. His 341 points scored with his back to the basket ranked second in college basketball, according to Synergy Sports Technology.

“I know I’ll have to be a different play in the NBA than I was in college,” he said. “I’m excited about the opportunity. It won’t be about being a low-post scorer against double teams. I’m actually excited about not seeing double teams anymore. From now on it’s about my dedication to being the most fit athlete possible. I look around the league and I’m inspired by the level of physicality and conditioning. That’s where I need to get. There’s no fat on my body, but I can lean out and get faster, quicker, more athletic.

“The NBA values players like Steven Adams and Jonas Valanciunas — guys who set great screens, who know the pick and roll game, how to slip and seal, how to be a physical defender and rebounder who blocks shots. My size can be a major advantage in the NBA. I don’t need the ball to be happy.”

With Cockburn off to the pro ranks, Illinois will need to replace possibly five of its top seven scorers, with Alfonso Plummer, Trent Frazier and Da’Monte Williams all out of eligibility after five years in college. Sophomore Andre Curbelo elected to transfer to St. John’s, while senior Jacob Grandison is currently undecided about returning for his fifth season of eligibility.

Illinois is bringing in a strong recruiting class with three top-100 prospects in Skyy Clark, Ty Rodgers and Jayden Epps, and is expected to be aggressive pursuing veterans in the transfer portal, especially in the frontcourt. Sophomore power forward Coleman Hawkins looks poised for a breakout season, and freshman small forward RJ Melendez was highly regarded coming into college.

The NBA draft combine will be May 16-22 in Chicago, and the draft will be June 23 in Brooklyn, New York.
