Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Wade Miley will throw a bullpen today to see how his arm responded to his first rehab appearance the other day. If he feels good, I think it is possible he joins the Cubs and starts May 10th even though he is not fully stretched out. It’s not like any of the Cubs starters have been working beyond four innings consistently anyway.

St. Paul 9, Iowa 2

Game Recap

The Iowa bullpen has been one of the strengths of the team over the first month of the season, but it fell apart on Saturday. Sure, it didn’t help that this was a bullpen day from the start but James Bourque and Eric Stout put in some good work early for the club, allowing just one earned run through four innings. But from there the wheels fell off. Anueris Rosario gave up three runs, Cayne Ueckert continued to struggle with his command/control which led to three walks and a run allowed, and then Erich Uelmen struggled through the final inning (four runs, two earned).

To be fair, the bullpen didn’t get much help from the defense (two errors led to three unearned runs on the afternoon) and the offense mustered just two runs despite getting five combined doubles from Jared Young, Nelson Velazquez, and Nelson Maldonado in the middle of the order.

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Andrelton Simmons started at SS and played about 2/3 of the game. The ball never did find him while he was in there so I’ve got nothing to report regarding how his throwing looks as he comes back from his sore shoulder. He did go 1-for-3 at the plate. If he suffers no setbacks Simmons should be ready to go before Nico Hoerner requires another day off in Chicago.

Birmingham 6, Tennessee 2

Game Recap

This was a rough one, as the Smokies just couldn’t get their offense going all night. Darius Hill had three singles, but the rest of the squad combined for just one hit. Tennessee didn’t much done on the mound either. Anderson Espinoza put up another inconsistent effort. He looks good against most of the batters he faces, but there are always slips ups in command/control which lead to mistakes to several hitters a game. He gave up a four runs over four innings.

Just a forgettable day all around.

High-A

South Bend 3, Peoria 2 (Game 1)

South Bend 4, Peoria 0 (Game 2)

Game Recap

South Bend managed to put up a decent amount of runs in both games based mostly off of stringing together a bunch of singles, which is admirable, but not the story of the day.

In Game 2, Max Bain was lights out with five punchouts over four innings. We are starting to see the guy who impressed in workouts and bullpen sessions the last two offseasons show up more often on the mound in game action. He’s gotten himself in top shape this year and reworked his delivery to become a bit more fluid which has helped his command. He’s also settled into a consistent repertoire after doing a lot of experimenting with different grips and pitches last season.

Riley Martin followed with three shutout innings and five strikeouts of his own. A breakout story for the Pelicans throughout April, Martin had dominated in Low-A with an insane K rate. His first foray in High-A was less successful however, as he was knocked around for six runs over three innings. He returned to his Myrtle Beach form in this one though.

Game 1 it was Jordan Wicks and Chris Clarke combining to shut down the Chiefs. Wicks did allow two runs but they were both unearned. The two weren’t quite as dominant as the Game 1 duo, but still, the Chiefs rarely threatened.

Low-A

Myrtle Beach 9, Salem 6

Game Recap

The red hot Myrtle Beach offense was held in check through the first four innings, but finally exploded for six runs in the fifth to break the game open. Kevin Alcantara delivered the big blow, a three-run homer. He also doubled later in the game and delivered a nice play in the outfield as well. The young outfielder has had some rough games mixed in throughout the first month, but he’s always responded with good efforts soon after.

And of course, would it be a Pelicans game if it didn’t include Pete Crow-Armstrong reaching base multiple times? Yesterday, it was three singles from the 20-year old centerfielder to push his average over 400, his OBP to 500, and his SLG well above 600. Not bad for a 20-year old with 26 games of total pro experience.

One of the guys who turned heads in April, Porter Hodge, was on the mound for Myrtle Beach. It was the first time though the opposition was able to get to him a bit this season. He gave up four runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings. Luis Rodriguez came on in relief and shut down any hopes of a Salem comeback, earning a well deserved win in the process. The lefty doesn’t overpower but he’s been very effective for Myrtle Beach since he joined the team last season.

Once we get more games with better cameras for Pelicans games I hope to provide a bit more detailed insight into their games. It’s been a bit of a frustrating first month as a watcher, despite the stellar performance, simply because I can’t do much evaluating beyond boxscores.

Top Performers

Kevin Alcantara: 2-5, 2B, HR (2), R, 3 RBI (.247)B.J. Murray Jr.: 2-3, 2 R, HBP (.306)Pete Crow-Armstrong: 3-5, R, RBI, SB (8) (.410)Cole Roederer: 0-3, R, 2 BB, SB (1) (.429)Liam Spence: 1-3, RBI, BB (.143)Luis Rodriguez: 3.2 IP, 4 H, R, 2 BB, 5 K (W, 2-0, 1.26)

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Another 3 hit game for Pete Crow-Armstrong gets him to the coveted 400/500/600 triple slash. His current batting line is 410/500/627 in 20 games for Myrtle Beach.

In 26 career Low-A games (his entire pro career) he has hit 411/515/598

DeVon Franklin Reveals The Village That Raised Him In “It Takes A Woman”

DeVon Franklin Reveals The Village That Raised Him In “It Takes A Woman”

Named one of the “Top 10 Producers to Watch” by Variety and heralded by Oprah as “a different kind of Spiritual Teacher,” DeVon Franklin is the driving force behind some of our favorite feel-good films and the author of multiple New York Times bestsellers.

He produced the inspirational Miracles from Heaven and Breakthrough and wrote The Success Commandments: Master The Ten Spiritual Principles To Achieve Your Destiny. Recently, he worked alongside director Eva Longoria to produce Flamin’ Hot for Disney. The soon-to-be-released film chronicles the journey of the Mexican-American Frito Lay janitor responsible for turning Flamin’ Hot Cheetos into the cultural phenomenon they are today.

His past projects have inspired millions, but when we sat down together recently, we discussed a much more personal project. DeVon’s new audiobook It Takes a Woman, released on April 21, offers a personal twist on the African proverb, “it takes a village to raise a child.” After his father’s untimely death, a village of women surrounded him and his two brothers, shaping them into the men they are today.

His new audiobook is a 4.5-hour candid conversation with his “village of love”– his mother, Paulette, and his five living great aunts, Aunt Nuna, Aunt Ida, Aunt Enis, Aunt Sondra, and Aunt Donna. Their wisdom helped DeVon tap into his inner resilience, and his audiobook ensures their legacy will continue to encourage others, too. The topics span dating and marriage to money, regret, and death. Nothing is off the table, and their genuine conversations reveal an unbreakable family bond that encourages readers to fortify their own familial relationships.

For some, it takes a village to raise a child. For DeVon, It Takes a Woman. Mother’s Day is coming up, and *wink, wink, nudge, nudge* It Takes a Woman is a perfect gift for the mother or mother-like figure in your life.

Betting tips for NBA playoffs: Suns-Mavericks, Heat-76ers Game 4son May 8, 2022 at 3:57 pm

All odds are provided by Caesars Sportsbook.

What you need to know for Sunday’s playoff games

— Jim McCormick & Kyle Soppe

Impact Of Embiid: Joel Embiid returned for Game 3 and the 76ers won by 20, so everything is great and we should bet all things Philadelphia moving forward, right?

Be careful. On Friday night, for just the third time since Christmas, the 76ers averaged fewer than 87 possessions per 48 minutes, the second such game for them that occurred against the Heat and an 8.2% dip from the pace of Games 1 and 2. Not ideal if you’re looking to bet overs for any player on either team. Is it likely that both teams fail to reach 100 points again? Maybe not, but blindly assuming that the return of a stat sheet stuffer results in counting number goodness (for him or anyone else in this game for that matter) is dangerous.

Experience the 2022 WNBA season like never before with the first full-featured fantasy league game dedicated to a professional women’s sport. Get a team or start a league today!.

Book a bounce-back: Devin Booker underachieved in almost all regards on Friday night, scoring just 18 points in his 40 minutes and just didn’t ever look comfortable (five turnovers and more missed FTs than he had entering action in these playoffs). He cost you in Game 3 and you’re mad. I get it. None of those struggles, however, impact today’s action and going back to the well isn’t a bad idea. Nearly 79% of Phoenix’s shot attempts came from their starting unit, a sign that they are going to ride or die with their primary options.

That sort of role stability is great to have in the prop market and let’s not overlook the fact that Booker has made 9-of-14 triples over the past two games. Nothing is ever a lock, but there is far more upside than downside in backing Booker (and the Suns for that matter) in this spot as the market overreacts to Game 3’s result.

Breaking down today’s games

Phoenix Suns at Dallas Mavericks
3:30 p.m. ET, American Airlines Center, Dallas

Line: Suns (-2)
Money line: Suns (-140), Mavericks (+120)
Total: 214.5 points
BPI Projected Total: 213.2 points
BPI Win%: Mavericks (58.8%)

Questionable: Torrey Craig (elbow).

Ruled Out: Dario Saric (knee), Tim Hardaway Jr. (foot).
Note: BPI numbers factored in players who are ruled out but assumes questionable players will play

Notable: The Mavs are 8-1-1 ATS in their past 10 home games (won Game 3 by nine points as a 1-point favorite).

Best bet: Chris Paul over 30.5 total points + assists + rebounds

Paul is coming off a nightmarish Game 3, in which he lost almost twice as many turnovers (seven) as assists (four) and scored only 12 points in a Suns loss. The only time he scored fewer points this postseason was in Game 4 against the Pelicans, the last time the Suns lost, and in that case Paul bounced back with 22 points, 11 assists and 6 rebounds in the next game. Paul has played extremely well in the postseason, averaging 21.4 PPG, 9.2 APG and 4.9 RPG (35.5 PAR) and should return to his typical level in Game 4. — Andre Snellings

Best bet: Suns -1.5

With 17 turnovers in Game 3, the Suns played sloppy. Paul committed seven of them. Nevertheless, Paul is a veteran and one of the best point guards of all time, and he will bounce back along with the rest of the team. The Suns will be able to win Game 4 if they limit their turnovers and score inside the paint more often. Phoenix will cover. — Eric Moody

Best bet: Deandre Ayton over 27.5 points + rebounds

Ayton was solid in Game 3 with 16 ponts and 11 rebounds. He’s averaged 19.2 PPG and 9.0 RPG thus far in the playoffs while shooting 65.3% from the field. In Game 4, Paul will look to redeem himself, so Ayton will be heavily relied upon as the Suns look to assert their dominance in the paint after being outscored 50-32 in Game 3. — Moody

Best bet: Under 214.5

In my opinion, Game 3’s final score plummeted because the Suns missed so many shots and the Mavericks didn’t shoot well from beyond the arc. Phoenix’s field goal percentage this postseason is 52.6%. The Suns should have a better offensive performance while improving on defense. I’m taking the under. — Moody

Best bet: Chris Paul over 25.5 points+assists

Snellings and I both anticipate Paul will bounce back. Paul’s birthday was spoiled by the Mavericks as his seven turnovers in the first half were the most in any half of his career. I’d be shocked if the veteran point guard didn’t bounce back today. During this postseason, Paul has averaged 21.4 PPG and 9.2 APG. — Moody

Miami Heat at Philadelphia 76ers
8:00 p.m. ET, Wells Fargo Center, Philadelphia

Line: 76ers (-2)
Money line: 76ers (-130), Heat (+110)
Total: 207.5 points
BPI Projected Total: 208 points
BPI Win%: 76ers (62.1%)

Questionable: Kyle Lowry (hamstring), Max Strus (hamstring), Gave Vincent (knee), Isaiah Joe (ankle), Joel Embiid (orbital).

Ruled Out: None
Note: BPI numbers factored in players who are ruled out but assumes questionable players will play

Notable: After going 10-1-1 ATS in 12 road games, the Heat are just 1-3 ATS in their past four away from Miami (lost Game 3 by 20 as a 1-point underdog).

Best bet: Tyrese Maxey over 19.5 points.

1 Related

Maxey has been able to get his shot against the Heat, particularly in heavy spurts when the defense isn’t focused on him. In Game 1, with Embiid out, the Heat defense was geared to prevent penetration, which negatively affected both James Harden and Maxey. In Game 2, though, Maxey was able to get loose and post a career-high scoring effort. In Game 3, in the first half, Maxey seemed to overly defer to the newly returned Embiid and went scoreless. In the second half, though, Maxey got loose and popped 21 points. For Game 5, Embiid is expected to play again and Maxey has had time to mentally adjust to that. The Heat’s defense will have to focus more on Embiid, but he’s also unlikely to be ready for his typical volume. This combo works well for Maxey, who will be relied upon to score but should be facing a less focused defense. — Snellings

Best bet: Under 207.5

Only one of the first three games have hit the over, and that was because both teams shot over 45% from the field and Miami made nearly half of its 29 3-point attempts. Otherwise, both teams have endured scoring lulls. Additionally, Embiid does not seem to be his usual self, returning from an injury and wearing a face mask. Finally, typically as a series goes longer, both defenses become more familiar with offensive sets and player tendencies. This should be a sluggish game. — Doug Kezirian

Best bet: Kyle Lowry over 14.5 points + assists

Let me remind you that Lowry returned in Game 3 after being absent for two weeks. For the second time in the last 10 years, he failed to score in a playoff game. Lowry should have a better outing tonight. The last five seasons, he averaged 15.4 PPG and 6.7 APG in the playoffs. — Moody

Best bet: Heat +1.5 In Game 3, Joel Embiid returned. He wasn’t his usual dominant self on offense, but made up for it on defense. Miami scored 79 points. It was their second game under 80 points this season. The Heat will regroup and adjust for Game 4. Miami has been an underdog by two points or more on 20 occasions this year, and has covered the spread on 16 of those occasions. — Moody

Best bet: Jimmy Butler over 34.5 points + assists + rebounds

In Game 3, Butler scored 41.8% of the Heat’s 79 points. In the regular season and playoffs, it was the third-most in a game in his career. Butler has averaged 27.4 PPG, 5.4 APG and 7.9 RPG in the 2022 playoffs. The Heat will continue to rely on him. — Moody

Warriors brush with history after scorching Grizzon May 8, 2022 at 6:58 am

SAN FRANCISCO — The Golden State Warriors almost made history on the way to their 142-112 rout of the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinals.

The Warriors shot 63.1% from the field and had a 76.1 true shooting percentage — the second-best in both categories in NBA postseason history.

The Clippers had a 77.8% true shooting percentage against the Mavericks in Game 5 of their 2020 first-round series.

“When we trust each other and we just hit the open man, we’ve got so much great shooting that we’re capable of nights like this,” Klay Thompson said.

Heading into Game 3, the Warriors emphasized the need to find their offensive rhythm, starting with better shot selection. Thompson’s performance through the first two games — and then the third — was the epitome of that.

“When we’re getting good shots, the chances of Klay getting hot are much greater,” Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said. “And when he gets hot our team takes on a different look. … So it’s all connected.”

Heading into Saturday night, Thompson was shooting just 28.9% from the floor, including just 5-of-22 from 3, in the series. In Game 3 he finally broke out, scoring 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including 4-of-6 from 3.

“He got better shots,” Kerr said. “When you establish a tone where you get good shots, then the tough ones tend to go in.”

The “tough ones” Kerr speaks of were highlighted by a one-legged runner from just outside the 3-point line over Desmond Bane in the third quarter.

“As long as my shoulders are squared up to the rim, I can take a one-footer, two-footer,” Thompson said. “I think it’s a good look and I’ve done it before.”

Kerr disagreed: “[It] was not a good shot. But by the time he was comfortable, he was in rhythm and he’s very capable of making those shots.”

While Thompson found his scoring rhythm, the Warriors’ other two main guards, Steph Curry and Jordan Poole, continued their already strong play this series.

Curry scored a game-high 30 points on 7-of-14 shooting, while Poole finished with 27 points on 11-of-17 shooting. They also made an impact on defense, holding the Grizzlies to just 4-of-17 shooting when they were the primary defenders.

Game 2 saw the Grizzlies continuously attack Poole, but Saturday he did the same to them, penetrating the paint any chance he got.

“I thought it was beautiful the way he was attacking offensively, but even more so I thought it was incredible how he defended and competed on that side of the ball,” Draymond Green said.

“When you come out and give effort on that side of the ball, No. 1, your teammates can rally behind you, but more so from an X and O standpoint you put up some resistance and guys can get there to help you if you need help. I mean, we didn’t need to help him much tonight.”

The Warriors’ defense helped feed into their offensive flow. Early on, Golden State was turnover heavy. Green said the Warriors were getting too deep into the paint, trying to kick the ball out, and “dancing” a bit too much on their cuts — generally being careless with the ball — which forced them to constantly defend Memphis in transition.

It didn’t help that the Grizzlies began the game torching from beyond the 3-point line. But as the Warriors started to stop Memphis from scoring, they settled on the offensive end.

“When you get your defense set, you come down with a balanced floor and you can get transition opportunities,” Green said. “They all go hand-in-hand. I think we finally, we’re not driving too deep and trying to pass the ball. You kind of get into a space, see the first open guy, just move in.”

The bow that tied the Warriors’ offensive revelation together was the play of Andrew Wiggins and Otto Porter Jr.

Porter finished with a plus-33 net rating, easily making this his best playoff performance this season. He has been reliable on the boards, but recently has been a non-factor on offense. After not making multiple 3-pointers in a game since April 7, Porter knocked down three in Game 3 on his way to 13 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks and a steal.

“It’s not coincident. He just understands how to play,” Kerr said. “He’s in the right spot all the time.”

Wiggins finished 17 points, 15 of which he scored in the first half — the most he’s ever had in the first half of a playoff game.

“That’s what we’ve been asking Wiggs to do all year … put your head down and get to the hole,” Green said. “It’s very hard to stop him from getting to the basket.”

Green continued: “It’s bigger than just dunks. The way he’s been rebounding and the physicality that he’s been playing with and boxing out … he’s been doing an incredible job no matter who he gets matched up on.”

The Warriors look at their scoring onslaught in Game 3 as a blueprint of what they can do. Coming off the first two games of the series — the first won by one point, the second lost by five — they knew that both of those games could have ended differently if their offense was a decimal better. Game 3 proved that.

“It was a performance that I knew was in them,” Kerr said. “On tape, we saw that if we were a little more patient and a little more poised that we could get some good shots. I think our players have adapted … and they did a great job tonight of generating better looks.”

“First Weekend at the Cottage,” from the “Beer Belongs” series of ads by the U.S. Brewers Foundation, 1954

Not a lot to say in preface this week, as I’m gearing up for a string of listings for Illinois Craft Beer Week, starting this weekend. More later.

This week, the World Beer Cup medals were awarded at the Craft Brewers Conference & BrewExpo America, meeting in Minneapolis. Medals were award in 100 categories, in a competition sponsored by the Brewers Association,

Local winners included Mickey Finn’s Brewery of Libertyville, whose Moon Rocks took a Silver medal for Session India Pale Ale. Roaring Table of Lake Zurich took a silver for Beth in the Classic Saison competition.

In northwest Indiana, Shoreline Brewery of Michigan City, IN won a bronze in Scottish-Style Ale for Beltaine.

An exhibit celebrating the key role of Asian Americans on the Blockchain

An exhibit celebrating the key role of Asian Americans on the Blockchain

In celebration of AAPI Month, SuperRare is pleased to announce the first ever exhibition dedicated to showcasing the work of Asian American artists.  Running the entire month of May and entitled #TheGoldStandard, the exhibition is curated by artist-technologist-activist and CEO of Drue Kataoka Art Studios, Drue Kataoka#TheGoldStandard spotlights the vast contributions of Asian American artists in the digital art world.  Ten artists refract the Asian American and global pan-Asian experience through their diverse practices.

“Vitruvian Woman” by Artist: Drue Kataoka x Concept Art House

“Asian American artists have been the backbone of digital creativity for decades: from pushing visual technology to its limits in Hollywood special effects, to building virtual worlds for top gaming experiences, to advancing the frontier of technology art.   Asian Americans have played a critical role in turning the best-known digital franchises into household names, all the while toiling in the shadows.  Now, as crypto art and NFTs liberate artists, armies of incredible talent are claiming their sovereign artistic identities along with their Asian heritage.  So, for this first of its kind show, I came up with the name #TheGoldStandard in reference to Asian skin, but also to excellence, and of course– to the roots of cryptocurrencies (and crypto art) as the ‘new gold.’” shared Kataoka.

#TheGoldStandard collection features ten artworks from prominent Asian-American artists, ranging from rising stars in the NFT space to scientists and researchers who are pushing the frontier of what is technically possible in crypto to veterans of some of the world’s leading special effects houses in the entertainment industry, to art entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley.  All works will be on exhibit and available for purchase during the month of May on SuperRare exclusively.

“SuperRare is thrilled to be the first NFT platform to highlight the work of Asian American artists in this way,” states SuperRare CEO John CrainWe have a track record of identifying trends in the NFT space early and saw a big wave coming with Asian American talent in the NFT ecosystem.  It’s a pleasure to collaborate with Drue Kataoka who leveraged her art to raise over $750,000 USD for social justice causes in 2021 alone.”

Participating artists include: internationally exhibiting research-based artist Ani Liu, internationally exhibited photographer Billy Dinh, award-winning global studio Concept Art House, multidisciplinary filmmaker Curry Sicong Tian, renowned artist, technologist & activist Drue Kataoka, 40-year National Geographic photographic artist & Sony Ambassador Mike Yamashita, multidisciplinary artist Reuben Wu, award winning CG Artist Te Hu, new media artist/designer/researcher Weidi Zhang, artist and engineer Xin Liu, and poet/artist Anand Venkateswaran.

‘Focused’ Giannis dominant in Bucks’ Game 3 winon May 8, 2022 at 3:20 am

MILWAUKEE — The Boston Celtics made everything difficult offensively for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo through the first two games of this series, but Antetokounmpo broke through with a dominant performance in Game 3, scoring 42 points to lead the Bucks to a 103-101 victory Saturday.

An extra off-day between Games 2 and 3 gave Antetokounmpo more time to stew on his performance from Milwaukee’s most recent loss — which included going 2-for-12 shooting in the first half. A team source described Antetokounmpo’s demeanor in practice in the days leading up to Game 3 as “angry” to ESPN because he believed he could play better.

“He was absolutely ready for this game,” Bucks center Brook Lopez said. “I think he was ready for this game right after Game 2.”

Antetokounmpo bounced back from a poor shooting night in Game 2 to finish 16 of 30 (53%) on Saturday, adding 12 rebounds, 8 assists and 2 blocks to help the Bucks take a 2-1 series advantage.

The Celtics had been keeping him off-balanced by throwing a mix of talented, physical defenders to guard him on each possession, but Antetokounmpo found some answers Saturday. He scored against five different primary defenders, including 14 points against Celtics forward Al Horford, and scored 26 points in the paint, his most in a playoff game this season, according to research by ESPN Stats & Information.

2 Related

And when Antetokounmpo drove to the basket, the Celtics had no answer. He scored 17 points when shooting after his own drives, according to Second Spectrum, his most in a game this season.

“I just tried to read whatever is in front of me, play to my strengths as much as possible,” Antetokounmpo said after the game. “I know what my strengths are. Sometimes I’ll make the right play, sometimes I’ll make the wrong play, but as long as I play within my strengths, I’m going to be in a good place.”

He added: “At the end of the day, I’m not going to change something that’s been working for me. I live or die with it. … Now, I’ve got to be smarter with it and I’ve got to pick and choose the time. I feel sometimes I might rush stuff. I have to slow down and take my time and get to my spots.”

But Antetokounmpo also found a variety of ways to punish the Celtics on Saturday.

He did so in transition; the Bucks outscored the Celtics 21-11 in fast-break points and Antetokounmpo scored 11 points on 3-of-6 field goals (5-for-5 free throws). He did so by getting his teammates involved — Milwaukee shot 8-of-17 for 19 points off a pass from Antetokounmpo. And he disrupted Boston defensively, holding the Celtics to just 3-of-10 shooting whenever he was the primary defender.

“He does a great job of that, reading what they’re giving him or what they’re trying to take away, whatever it is,” Lopez said. “They throw a lot of different guys at him, a lot of different looks and everything like that. He does a great job of being smart, taking his time and either making a play for himself or someone else.”

The Bucks were pleased with their effort defensively following the first two games of this series, so they spent the days leading up to Game 3 focusing on how they could generate easier offense, especially for Antetokounmpo. The Celtics smothering defense contested just about everything for Antetokounmpo, making him work hard for each basket, so the Bucks wanted to get him the ball with room to score less-strenuous points.

Usually, the Bucks turn to forward Khris Middleton in such instances, running their offense through pick-and-rolls between Middleton and Antetokounmpo. However, with Middleton expected to miss the rest of the series with a sprained left MCL, Milwaukee utilized guard Jrue Holiday as Antetokounmpo’s pick-and-roll partner more frequently.

Antetokounmpo set 13 on-ball screens for Holiday that led to a direct action (shot, turnover, foul), their most in a game as teammates, according to research by ESPN Stats & Information. It wasn’t very successful in Game 3 — averaging 0.39 point per direct pick, down from 1.05 points during the regular season — but it’s a look the Bucks want to have in their disposal to generate offense with Middleton sidelined.

“It feels pretty good,” Holiday, who scored 25 points on 11-of-30 shooting, said after the game. “Sometimes with us, they switch, but there were a lot of times where they didn’t. Coming off [the screen], getting to the paint, getting to the basket, I felt like with the ball in my hands, I can make those plays.

“I can make that shot or even kick out. Me and Giannis have done pick and roll plenty of times. In this series, I feel like it’s good to go to it, especially with Khris out. Down the stretch, it’s going to be us two.”

Holiday and Antetokounmpo each took 30 shots Saturday and helped close out Boston in crunch time with a basket from both in the game’s final minute to rally from a one-point deficit with 50 seconds remaining.

Milwaukee’s stars outdueled Boston’s and the Bucks have a series lead because of it. And because Antetokounmpo was determined to respond after an off night.

“He was very focused, mentally composed,” Lopez said about Antetokounmpo’s preparation this week. “Getting his work in when we’d come in for practice, watching a lot of film, just going over a lot of stuff. He was definitely prepared for tonight. That’s just Giannis.”

Mavs fined $25K by NBA for leaving bench in G2on May 8, 2022 at 2:19 am

NEW YORK — – The Dallas Mavericks were fined $25,000 by the NBA on Friday for players and coaches straying too far onto the court from the bench in a Game 2 loss to Phoenix in the Western Conference semifinals.

Coach Jason Kidd criticized the decision before Game 3 in Dallas, saying the league is focusing on the wrong things. He said players cheering their teammates should be celebrated rather than punished.

The NBA said the violations occurred during live action in the Suns’ 129-109 victory on Wednesday. The win gave Phoenix a 2-0 lead in the series.

76ers violate injury reporting rules, fined $50,000on May 8, 2022 at 12:44 am

PHILADELPHIA — The NBA announced Saturday night that the Philadelphia 76ers have been fined $50,000 for violating league injury reporting rules for its handling of Joel Embiid in the lead-up to the club’s 99-79 Game 3 victory over the Miami Heat Friday.

The NBA said the 76ers “failed to disclose center-forward Joel Embiid’s participation status in an accurate and timely manner.”

Embiid was listed as out for Friday’s game as late as noon Friday — even after being cleared from the NBA’s concussion protocol and participating in the 76ers’ morning shootaround.

2 Related

Then, at 12:30pm, Embiid was upgraded to doubtful — which he remained until he was named as part of the starting lineup about a half-hour before the game tipped off.

Embiid, who had missed the first two games of the series with a facial fracture and concussion he suffered when he was hit in the face with a Pascal Siakam elbow in Game 6 of Philadelphia’s first round series with Toronto, finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds in 36 minutes in Philadelphia’s win, which saw it climb back to within 2-1 in the best-of-7 series.

Last week, the league hit the Phoenix Suns with a $25,000 fine after listing Devin Booker as out before he played in Game 6 against the New Orleans Pelicans.

Miami and Philadelphia will meet again in Game 4 Sunday night. Embiid is listed as questionable to play with his facial fracture and the right thumb ligament injury he also suffered in the first round against Toronto.

Let’s play two.

AAA

Iowa 6, St. Paul 2

Game Recap

He hasn’t posted a very high average or on base percentage so his slugging has probably gone a bit under the radar, but Jared Young has been the one consistent power threat for the I-Cubs in the early going. His 7th home run yesterday tied him with Alexander Canario for the second highest total in the system behind Nelson Velazquez. It’s also been a bit weird in that none of Young’s power has translated into extra base hits outside of homers (just 1 double) but that is sure to even out a bit as the season progresses.

Robel García also homered, and Nelson Maldonado is making a habit of multi-hit games in Iowa just as he did in Tennessee and before that in South Bend and before that in…

The Cubs have stockpiled enviable depth of left handed pitchers in Iowa and we got to see three of them shut down the opposition yesterday. Matt Dermody got the start and held the Saints to two runs over his five innings. He’s not a long term answer but Dermody got a cup of coffee with the big club a couple of years ago and looks to be throwing just as well this year, so if the need arises the Cubs could call upon him again.

Brandon Hughes followed with two scoreless. Like Maldonado and multi-hit games, Hughes and two scoreless innings are pretty much synonymous at this point. Stephen Gonsalves also fired a scoreless inning. Not a lefty, but Ben Leeper finished off the game with a pair of strikeouts in the 9th. He’s starting to round into the form we saw from him all of last season.

Top Performers

Jared Young: 4-5, HR (7), 3 R, 2 RBI (.250)Robel García: 1-2, HR (3), R, 3 RBI, 3 BB (.263)Nelson Maldonado: 3-5, 2B (.333)P.J. Higgins: 1-3, RBI, BB, HBP (.340)Dixon Machado: 1-3, 2 BB (.295)Matt Dermody: 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 5 K (W, 2-1, 3.27)Brandon Hughes: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K (0.00)

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

He wasn’t in the lineup, but the long awaited callup of Nelson Velazquez to Iowa has occurred. The outfielder is among the Cubs top 20 prospects, and some would argue the top 15. He can certainly hit the ball as hard as anyone in the system. The 23-year old is slugged .700 for the Smokies over the first month of the season. Despite playing just 56 games at the AA level he smacked 17 home runs and added 14 doubles and 2 triples for good measure. We could certainly see him get some time in Chicago during the second half of the season. My guess is his offensive profile as a Major Leaguer will shade more towards that of Patrick Wisdom as I expect the better right handed pitchers will make it difficult for him to make consistent contact. But Velazquez, like Wisdom, has shown that when he does make contact it tends to be very hard contact.

AA

Tennessee 9, Birmingham 5

Game Recap

Christopher Morel. Christopher Morel again. His two homers yesterday (I’ve seriously lost track of how many Cubs farmhands have pulled off that feat in the past few weeks) led Tennessee to an easy 9-5 victory.

Morel mash x2!

May 7, 2022

One of my favorite prospects to watch over the years thanks to his stellar defense at multiple positions, we may finally be witnessing the full breakout of Christopher Morel as an offensive player. The flashes have always been there. His bat speed has always allowed him to make hard contact, but he swung at too many bad pitches and it took a while to add enough mass to his wiry frame to take full advantage.

It’s been a slow build over the last five years. The plate discipline and pitch recognition has improved in small increments each season. He’s gotten stronger. Now that he is waiting for better pitches, when he does make contact it is no longer just hard contact. Morel is now making some of the hardest contact in the system. Far from the biggest guy, his exit velos and home run distances approach or match all of the top slugging prospects the Cubs possess.

John always liked to say that development isn’t always linear… but means that sometimes it is, and I can’t think of a better example of that over the past few years than Morel. Few leaps from him, just steady progress.

Bryce Ball also blasted a homer, his third, and Yonathan Perlaza (who should now get more regular playing time with Velazquez in Iowa) launched his second.

The offense wasn’t the only story though. Javier Assad has long been a solid but unspectacular starter for the Cubs at whatever level he’s pitched. Above average command and control, a feel for spin, and a solid pitch mix has let him keep hitters off balance and limited hard contact. I always assumed he had a shot at a middle relief job if he was able to bump his velo into the mid-90s in shorter stretches.

But, Assad looks to be in fantastic shape and is now starting to sit in the mid-90s as a starter. That takes him to a new level of interesting. I need to see more. And he has to show he can maintain this level for more than the first month, but he’s become yet another interesting arm to watch in the Cubs system.

Top Performers

Christopher Morel: 2-5, 2 HR (5, 6), 3 R, 3 RBI, SB (3) (.311)Bryce Ball: 3-5, 2B, HR (3), R, 2 RBI (.290)Yonathan Perlaza: 1-4, HR (2), R, RBI, BB (.154)Darius Hill: 1-3, 2B, 2 R, RBI, 2 BB (.303)Andy Weber: 2-5, 2B, RBI (.286)Christian Donahue: 2-5 (.176)Javier Assad: 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, ER, BB, 9 K (W, 1-1, 2.10)

High-A

South Bend 4, Peoria 2

Game Recap

South Bend didn’t generate a ton of offense, but they managed to bunch much of what they got into two innings. RBI singles by Matt Mervis and Owen Caissie in the 1st gave them the early lead, and then a two-run double by Fabian Pertuz in the 6th gave them a cushion after Peoria had drawn within a run.

Meanwhile on the mound, Daniel Palencia put together a really solid outing. The hard thrower has struggled a bit out of the gate, but he was hitting as high as 101 on the gun yesterday, and limited the Chiefs to one run over four innings. Manuel Espinoza did the same (minus the 101 gun readings) but even without the velo he managed to punch out an impressive 9 batters. Hunter Bigge earned his third save with a scoreless 9th.
