Chicago indie sensations Dehd go big-time with Blue SkiesLeor Galilon May 31, 2022 at 11:00 am

Chicago trio Dehd sound like they’re trying to levitate by fusing the ineffable but often incompatible powers of frigid postpunk and wispy indie rock. Dehd are dedicated minimalists: their lonesome, echoing guitars and sturdy, straightforward rhythms tend to show the seams in their songs, but they don’t reveal too much of the magic that makes them work. Dehd get some of their charm from the worn-in, skeletal feel of their music, which leaves little to distract you from the vocal interplay between bassist Emily Kempf and guitarist Jason Balla—both of whom seem to write killer pop hooks as offhandedly as they might doodle in a notebook. On Dehd’s new fourth album, Blue Skies (Fat Possum), the band play around with their sound ever so slightly: on the spiky, upbeat “Bop” and swaying ballad “Memories,” drummer Eric McGrady augments his blunt beats with sharp snatches of electronic percussion. For the most part, though, Dehd stick with what’s served them well since they formed six years ago, putting that bare-bones formula to work making bittersweet songs that can wallop like Top 40 radio hits with six producers. On the single “Bad Love,” Kempf leans into the majestic yearning of McGrady’s galloping drums and Balla’s dreamy, looping guitar with a focused, triumphant performance that showcases her vocal range—if there’s one moment that crystallizes the band’s flair for dramatically bridging joy and sorrow, it’s Kempf’s wordless, strained howl at the song’s end.

White Sox put Cease, Graveman on restricted liston May 31, 2022 at 3:54 am

TORONTO — The Chicago White Sox put right-handers Dylan Cease and Kendall Graveman on the restricted list Monday ahead of a three-game series at the Toronto Blue Jays that begins Tuesday night.

The team also waived left-hander Dallas Keuchel, who was designated for assignment last week, and recalled right-hander Kyle Crick from Triple-A Charlotte.

The Canadian government requires a person must have received a second COVID-19 vaccine dose — or one dose of Johnson & Johnson — at least 14 days prior to entering the country.

Players who go on the restricted list because they are not vaccinated against COVID-19 are not paid and do not accrue major league service time, according to a March agreement between Major League Baseball and the players’ association.

Cease (4-2) started Sunday against the Cubs and would not have faced Toronto in the upcoming series. Under the agreement, however, a pitcher who has pitched at least four consecutive innings in a game cannot be replaced on the active roster unless three days have elapsed.

Graveman has two saves in five chances and has struck out 19 batters in 22 2/3 innings over 21 appearances. Drafted by Toronto in 2013, he debuted with the Blue Jays in 2014 before being traded to Oakland that offseason in the deal that sent Josh Donaldson north.

Keuchel, 34, went 2-5 with a 7.88 ERA in eight starts before being designated for assignment on Saturday. Keuchel won the American League Cy Young Award with Houston in 2015 and has a 101-87 record with a 3.86 ERA in 262 career games, including 251 starts.

The veteran left-hander signed a $55.5 million, three-year contract with the White Sox in December 2019. He’s owed $14,456,044 for the remainder of his contract — $12,956,044 in salary for the rest of this season, plus a $1.5 million buyout of his 2023 option.

Stay Hydrated

Stay Hydrated

As we journey to live healthy, we need to remember that staying hydrated is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. They say our bodies are 60% water. Our cells, tissues, and organs need water to perform properly. For example, water helps our kidneys function by removing toxins. Our bodies need water to survive, and dehydration has a negative impact on our bodies. It causes dry skin, constipation, muscle cramps, headaches, and irritability. Your muscles perform better when they are hydrated. Water helps to cushion and lubricate your joints.

How much water should you drink? You have probably heard you should drink 8 glasses of water each day totaling 64 ounces. However, everyone should determine how much water they need based on their lifestyle and environment. People who exercise and sweat a lot need more water. If you are in hot or humid weather, you should consume more water. Try to avoid or limit drinking sodas or sugary drinks because they are unhealthy. Alcohol can dehydrate you because it is a diuretic. There is some debate whether sports drinks like Gatorade are healthy. If you work out a lot, drinking a sports drink may have some benefits and help with hydration.

I know there are some people who have a hard time drinking water. There are some things you can do to make water more appealing to you. Get a large water bottle and add fresh fruit to the water. I add lemon and lime to my water. Sip water throughout the day.

It is difficult to be healthy if you are dehydrated. Find a way to consume the water you need.

Cubs rookie Suzuki (finger) placed on 10-day ILon May 31, 2022 at 12:40 am

CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs placed rookie outfielder Seiya Suzuki on the 10-day injured list with a left ring finger sprain prior to the second game of Monday’s doubleheader against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Suzuki was injured in Thursday’s game against the Reds in Cincinnati when he stole second in the third inning and jammed his hand on the bag. He left the contest and has not played since.

Suzuki is batting .245 with four homers and 21 RBIs in 41 games. The roster move was retroactive to Friday.

The Cubs also designated veteran right-hander Robert Gsellman for assignment and selected the contract of left-hander Brandon Hughes from Triple-Iowa.

Gsellman is 0-2 with a 4.70 ERA in eight relief appearances, including a scoreless ninth inning in the first game. After six seasons with the Mets, the right-hander joined the Cubs as a non-roster invitee in spring training.

Hughes is 0-0 with a 2.57 and nine strikeouts for the Cubs in five relief appearances.

The beginning of the end of skyrocketing crime in Chicago and Cook? Who could lead funding of a slate of such crime fighters? Watch Berkowitz w/Fioretti on these state & local political/public policy issues: Web and Cable

The beginning of the end of skyrocketing crime in Chicago and Cook? Who could lead funding of a slate of such crime fighters? Watch Berkowitz w/Fioretti on these state & local political/public policy issues: Web and Cable

1. To reduce violent crimes sharply in Chicago and Cook County, we must treat criminals as criminals, not as victims. But Chicago Mayor Lightfoot, Cook County Board President Preckwinkle, State’s Attorney Foxx, Cook County’s Chief Judge Tim Evans & Cook County’s Sheriff  Dart refuse to do that, no matter the mayhem, violence, physical harm and death to people- and destruction of businesses and property- their policies cause in Chicago, Cook County and Illinois

2. In short- Lightfoot, Preckwinkle, Foxx, Evans, and Dart do not believe in real, effective, and pro-active policing. That is, they won’t employ a unified and sensible set of law enforcement policies to stop skyrocketing violent crime.

3. Such crime fighting policies require vigorous lawful and constitutional investigation of crimes, charges and arrest of individuals with probable cause they committed a crime, detention in jail imposed by judges (after being sought by assistant State’s Attorneys- not bonding out with little or nothing at stake from the accused) of those arrested repeatedly for violent crimes, vigorous prosecution (not continuous dropping of charges) by the State’s Attorney of the accused, followed by stiff and serious sentencing by judges if the accused is convicted, followed by incarceration (not probation and parole) for a length of time in prison that fits the crime.

4. Democrat Fioretti, a former two-term Chicago Alderman, could be appointed by the Cook County and Chicago GOP in July 2022 to be their candidate to stop Toni Preckwinkle (Cook County Dem Party Chair) in her November 2022 bid for a fourth term as Cook Country Board President.

******************

To watch the “Public Affairs” show w/Bob Fioretti discussing how to stop Chicago’s & Cook County’s lethal violence, please click here.

Or you can watch the show w/Bob Fioretti on cable in the City of Chicago on Ch. 21 (CAN TV):

Tonight, 8:30 pm and midnight.

Tomorrow night, 9:02 pm (as lead segment of the Illinois Channel two-hour block of programming airing around the State this week)

This Saturday morning, 9:02 am

This Sunday morning, 8:32 am (Ch 19)

************************

Jeff Berkowitz: “Bob, we are taping this on May 24th, we’ll find out about Paul Vallas perhaps this weekend, what if Paul ran for Mayor (Watch Vallas on a potential run), what if you ran for Cook County Board President…do you think you would have a team?”

*******************************

Many think Vallas and Fioretti could radically reduce crime by replacing Lightfoot (2023) and Preckwinkle (2022). Further, if the voters also tossed out Chief Judge Evans (79, 20-year Chief Judge) by voting not to retain him as a judge in November 2022, Foxx and Dart might get the message, giving Chicago and Cook County quite an impactful change on violent crime policy and crime reduction.

Would Ken Griffin help form and fund such a slate to reduce crime in Chicago and Cook County, which he says is one of his major policy goals? Inquiring minds want to know. Berkowitz hints in the show with Fioretti at this action by Illinois’ richest citizen, clocking in with a net worth of $30 billion.

This Memorial Day, lets honor and remember Captain Humayun Khan and Sergeant La David Johnson

This Memorial Day, lets honor and remember Captain Humayun Khan and Sergeant La David Johnson

Each year more than 350 flags are set into a Field of Honor by Veterans Network Committee of Northern Illinois, every flag representing a service person killed in acton in Operation Desert Storm, Iraq and Afghanistan.

This year the field is located next to Aldi’s at 3340 Three Oaks Rd, Cary, IL and the closing ceremony will be today at 6:00 PM.

As I sat in the middle of the field, as I do most years, I thought about the awful waste of human life. Each flag was tagged with the name of one of the soldiers who died, along with a short history of their lives and deaths. I never knew any of them, but I attended some of their funerals as a motorcycle escort.

Almost as tragic as their deaths is the way we’ve normalized and condoned disrespect for their sacrifice. More than just being shameful, it underscores the withering soul of America.

For his actions of selflessly protecting the men in his command in Iraq in 2004, 27-year old Captain Humayun Khan was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. You can read more about Captain Khan HERE.

25-year old Sergeant La David Johnson was part of an elite Army special forces group that got ambushed in Niger in 2017. Johnson was one of four U.S. servicemen killed in that ambush during a mission shrouded in mystery. You can read more about Sergeant Johnson HERE.

Johnson and Khan never met, but they had two things in common. They were both described as men who loved their country and neither one was White. Those are just facts.

Another fact is that Eddie Gallagher, a White Navy SEAL accused of war crimes and described by his team mates as pure evil was pardoned in 2019 by the president who attacked the Gold Star families of both Johnson and Khan. You can read about that HERE.

You can call that critical race theory, but they’re just facts and they seem to speak very clearly for themselves.

In 2016, Captain Khan’s parents, Khizer and Ghazala spoke out against the dystopian picture candidate Donnie Trump was painting of America, a picture that seemed to preclude non-White participants. Trump immediately went on the attack, excoriating Gold Star parents for standing up to message of racial hatred.

The men and women I rode with on missions escorting dead soldiers to their final resting places would once have suffered no such thing from anyone, not even a presidential candidate or the president himself.

That norm was shattered when Donnie took aim at John McCain, an undeniably patriotic and heroic America who endured the horrors of one the most brutal POW camps ever to intern American soldiers.

If you thought that Trump’s anti-McCain strategy would have been the end of him, we were both wrong.

In a phone call with Sergeant Johnson’s pregnant widow, Myeshia, Donnie told her that her husband knew what he signed up for. In the car with Mrs. Johnson was Florida Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, who confirmed Trump’s scornful message of condolence.

That episode ended with Trump’s Chief of Staff, John Kelly calling Congresswoman Wilson an empty barrel.

Take all this for what you will. Things have changed in America and not in a good way. Political opponents, people of color or other-than-usual sexual orientation have become mortal enemies.

If you’re of a mind to think about the sacrifices made for the lives we lead today, I would ask you to spend a moment thinking about the sacrifices of Captain Humayun Khan and Sergeant La David Johnson and their families. They deserved better from America.

In fact, don’t we all deserve better?

MLB

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Ok, let’s do this…

In: Mark Leiter Jr., Nelson Velazquez, Matt Swarmer

Out: Chris Martin (Bereavement List), Jonathan Villar (10-day IL), Wade Miley (15-day IL retro to May 26th)

Good for Matt Swarmer.
He’ll throw strikes.
He’s tall and and with an over the top delivery the ball comes from a unique arm angle and release point.
Pretty good slider.
Competitor.
Consistent.
I think he gives the Cubs 4-5 solid innings tomorrow.

— Michael Ernst (@mj_ernst)

How far has Matt Swarmer come? Two years ago, he was pitching in a men’s wood bat league full of college kids and retired players.

He’ll be a big league pitcher tomorrow.https://t.co/Rpnp3fiQha

Anderson Espinoza, the lone healthy 40-man roster pitcher, has also been recalled from AA to function as the 27th man for the doubleheader today.

The Cubs have added Anderson Espinoza to the roster for today’s doubleheader.

If he gets into the game, he’ll join rare company. There cannot be many big league pitchers who had a four-year stretch during their MiLB careers where they didn’t get into an official game.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Swarmer, Ethan Roberts was transferred from the 15 to the 60-day IL.

That, I think, covers it.

But that isn’t the only big promotion news throughout the system…

AAA

Memphis 4, Iowa 2

Game Recap

Iowa fell behind early as the Redbirds pecked away at starter Luke Farrell for single runs in each of the first three innings. It was 4-0 heading into the 7th when the Cubs offense finally managed to threaten. The first two men reached and Iowa had the middle of their order coming up. But groundouts by Nick Madrigal and David Bote only managed to move one runner and bring one in. Nelson Maldonado followed with a single, but Dixon Machado was held up at 3rd. Both would be stranded when Robel Garcia popped out. Greg Deichmann did homer the following inning, but no other I-Cubs reached base in the 8th or 9th.

The I-Cubs did get continued good work from relievers Brendon Little and Erich Uelmen to help keep the game within striking distance in the late innings. Little threw 1.2 more scoreless innings, and the former 1st rounder has now run his scoreless streak to begin his season up to 9.2. He has been walking some guys, but the lefty has allowed just 3 hits thus far.

Erich Uelmen just struck out two in another scoreless outing for the @IowaCubs.

Last 6 outings: 10.1 IP, 1 ER, 11 K.

Season ERA down to 2.19.

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Eury Ramos has been promoted to Iowa. The hard thrower has been improving his breaking ball this year and has been looking good of late. He’s another guy pushing for a 40-man spot later this season or offseason.

A couple MLB rehab updates tonight for the @IowaCubs.

Nick Madrigal: 1-for-4, single, lineout
David Bote: 0-for-4, RBI groundout, walk, stolen base.

South Bend 7, Great Lakes 5

Game Recap

South Bend clustered together base runners in three different innings in order to post seven runs. They managed it without hitting a homer and with only one double in the mix. The scorching hot Owen Caissie reached all four times up, and Luis Verdugo reached in three of his four plate appearances.

Jordan Nwogu has been heating up at the plate as well and he proved a great catalyst at the top of the order in this one.

Um, it’s been a quiet resurgence but Jordan Nwogu has has a very nice run the last three weeks. It’s all coming together for him. Hopefully, it carries over to June. pic.twitter.com/heZFRN4N2m

Low-A

Augusta 3, Myrtle Beach 1

Game Recap

Not much to write about in this one. Lefty Luis Rodriguez dominated after starter Porter Hodge had his pitch count run up in the 2nd inning. Rodriguez isn’t overpowering but he’s got solid stuff and is one of those guys with great feel. He did not allow a hit over 4.2 innings of relief, while striking out 6. Hard throwing Frankie Scalzo Jr. followed with 1.2 hitless frames off his own.

Oh, and we got one last Low-A PCA highlight:

Pelicans’ McCollum joining ESPN as NBA analyston May 30, 2022 at 6:33 pm

New Orleans guard and National Basketball Players Association president CJ McCollum has added another title to his busy schedule — NBA analyst for ESPN.

The network announced Monday that they have signed the Pelicans star to a multiplatform deal. He will make his ESPN debut on Thursday during “NBA Finals: Celebrating 75,” which will be ESPN2’s alternate presentation of Game 1 of the NBA Finals between the Golden State Warriors and Boston Celtics.

McCollum graduated from Lehigh University with a journalism degree and has made past appearances on ESPN as an analyst.

“I am excited to bring what I feel is my unique perspective, based on my vast knowledge of the game that I’ve gained during my nine years as a player in the NBA,” McCollum said in a statement. “To have an opportunity to put my journalism background to use on the largest stage with the many talented professionals at ESPN is a dream come true.”

McCollum will work with ESPN to develop a new podcast. He will also be an analyst for games during coverage of the NBA Summer League, as well as making some appearances on studio shows throughout the year.

“CJ is one of the most respected players in the NBA, which is evident by his role as President of the NBA PA. Furthermore, he’s an extremely talented member of — and leader on — one of the most interesting teams in the league: the New Orleans Pelicans,” said David Roberts, ESPN head of NBA and studio production. “CJ’s commitment to this opportunity, combined with his passion for journalism and sports broadcasting, will be a clear benefit for NBA fans.”

McCollum was traded from Portland to New Orleans near the February trade deadline. He averaged 24.3 points once he joined the Pelicans and helped them make the playoffs.

McCollum is part of an increasing number of players who are year-round analysts while still playing. Los Angeles Sparks forward Chiney Ogwumike has been working for ESPN since 2018, including a stint hosting an afternoon radio show. Golden State’s Draymond Green signed a multiplatform deal with Turner Sports in January.
