Is ChicagoBlackhawks’ Patrick Kane the greatest United States-born player of all time yet?
When you ask a hockey fan who the greatest player of all time is, there is a 99 percent chance they will say it was either Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Bobby Orr, or Gordie Howe. A case might be able to be made for Sidney Crosby by the time he is all said and done but you never know. All five of those guys are Canadien so the hot debate is who is the greatest American player of all time? Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane certainly has a case for himself.
There have been some great ones in the past like Mike Modano, Jeremy Roenick, and Chris Chelios. There are some more great ones on the way in guys like Auston Matthews, Charlie McAvoy, Jack Hughes, and Jack Eichel. Well, the greatest of all time might have played in the middle of those two eras. He might not be quite on that level yet but he is right there. Kane has 389 goals and 633 assists for 1022 points in 973 games.
Kane has had some incredible production and at 31 years old, he has a lot of gas left in the tank. He is going to have a chance at 1500 or more points but he needs to be consistent and stay healthy. If he does all of those things, he will go down as the greatest American player ever. On this Fourth of July, people should remember and appreciate how good Kane has been for this country,.
The regular season points are awesome but Kane has some hardware to go with it. Everyone knows that he has won the Stanley Cup three times. In the 2013 edition of that cup, Kane won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the playoffs. Kane has also won the Hart Trophy as the league MVP and the Art Ross Trophy as the league’s leading scorer. He even won the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie in 2008.
This has all been so fun to watch as fans of USA Hockey and the Chicago Blackhawks. It has been a treat to watch Patrick Kane and he isn’t even close to being done. By the time his career is over, there will be no debate that he is the greatest American to ever play.

Despite the lack of national recognition throughout his career, Matt Forte was a great running back who deserves Hall of Fame votes when eligible in 2023
Over his ten year NFL career, Matt Forte was one of, if not the most complete running back in the entire league. When the Chicago Bears decided to not resign him, he went to the New York Jets to finish off one of the most underrated careers in NFL history.
During his eight years in Chicago, no player had more total yards from scrimmage (12,718). Only three more players had more rushing yards (8,602) and no running back had more receptions (487).
Forte finished his playing days with the Jets, adding another 1,750 total yards from scrimmage before he signed a one-day contract in April 2018 to retire as a Bear.
Despite his fantastic numbers, he only received two invites to the Pro Bowl and never made an All-Pro team. Why is this?
It is certainly not due to a lack of consistency. Other than his final NFL season, he finished every year with over 1,000 total yards from scrimmage.
It isn’t due to any glaring injury concerns. Forte missed 14 games in his career, and in the 146 games he played in, he was the starter for 137 of them.

The reasons? For one, his prime years were played when the division rival Minnesota Vikings had a prime Adrian Peterson who won an MVP. So, Forte was often overshadowed.
In addition to that, the lack of team success often weighs heavily on media attention. The Bears only made the playoffs once during Forte’s tenure, and the Jets never even touched them.
It happens all the time; great players on bad teams get under-appreciated due to team failures. Football is a team game, but Forte always did his part.

Trey Burton has been released by the Chicago Bears
But even when he caught 102 passes out of the backfield in 2014, he didn’t get an invite to the Pro Bowl. Even though that number set a record for the most receptions by any running back in a single-season, still no invite.
The record didn’t last long though, as Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey caught 106 passes last season. But without Forte, is there a Christian McCaffrey?
Probably. But to say that Matt Forte didn’t help pave the road for the McCaffreys or Le’Veon Bells and any other dual-threat running back is nonsense.
So despite playing on bad teams, despite being in a division with arguably the greatest back of the decade, Matt Forte has a solid case to be enshrined in Canton, Ohio. Will he be first ballot? Probably not, but he’s worthy of getting inducted during his eligibility.
Under-appreciated by many, Forte’s career was one that demanded respect and recognition. It’s well past the time to give it to him, and in 2023 and beyond, it will be time for the voters to step up and put his name in.
ChicagoBears (Photo by Jason Miller/Getty Images) David Njoku
With tight end David Njoku requesting a trade, should the Chicago Bears trade for him?
Everyone in the NFL knows that the Chicago Bears have a tight end problem. The Bears currently have nine tight ends on the roster and with training camp set to begin in a few weeks, that number will go down to just three or four by the time the regular season begins.
With Cleveland Browns tight end David Njokuofficially requesting a trade, most would argue that the Bears should just stay away from him. There is no point in giving up more future draft capital for Njoku. Additionally, the Bears have already heavily invested in tight end this offseason by drafting Cole Kmet and signing Jimmy Graham.
For every argument that exists for why the Bears shouldn’t trade for Njoku, there can be arguments made for why general manager Ryan Pace should pull the trigger on a trade for Njoku and make him the tenth tight end on the Bears roster.
First, by the time that the 2020 NFL regular season will begin, Njoku will have turned 24 years old. Youth is the first thing to keep in mind. He’s only entering his fourth season and has 20 starts under his belt. While he dealt with injuries in 2019, he did start 14 games as a sophomore and had 56 receptions for 639 yards and four touchdowns.
Second, pairing Njoku and Kmet up would give the Bears two versatile pieces that would make the offense more dangerous. By having two big tight ends, the Bears would have a more lethal passing game, while also being able to use 12 personnel more. With one running back and two tight ends, head coach Matt Nagy would be able to run the pass-heavy offense he seems to want to employ.
Third, Njoku is a former first-round pick who’s got a low cap hit for 2020. Financially speaking, for the Bears to have a first-round talent on the roster that’s making just three million dollars in 2020, makes sense. While the cap hit would increase to six million dollars in 2021, the Bears could work out a contract extension that would lower Njoku’s cap hit for 2021 and 2022, giving the team some much needed financial flexibility.

One of the biggest obstacles in trading for Njoku will end up being the compensation required. What exactly are the Browns looking for? If it’s draft picks, the Bears likely would need to reach into their 2022 draft capital to make an enticing offer.
Trading for Njoku ultimately would be a low-risk, high-reward move that could give Nagy two tight ends to use in the offense while also giving opposing defenses another playmaker to gameplan for.
Right now, there appears to be a long way to go until Njoku is traded but with each passing day, it’s likely that he gets more anxious for a fresh start and the Browns could be forced to lower their asking price for him, giving the Bears a golden opportunity to get a good player for a bargain price.

Lucky absolutely loves his walks and car rides … he just lights up when you pull out his leash. He’s even good on road trips. In the home, he likes to be with you and stay by your side.
He never goes on furniture or in your bed. Instead, he’ll sleep in his own dog bed right on the floor. He will however help himself to any edible treats he smells within his reach.
Lucky came to Friends of Petraits Rescue in February when his human passed away of cancer. Now it’s time for him to find a permanent loving guardian for his golden years.
He is protective of his food and bowl with other dogs and cats, so he is best as the only pet in the home and without children.
Lucky has very thick hair that needs to be professionally groomed at least a couple times a year.
He is perfectly housebroken, no crate needed, and non-destructive in the home.
He’s typically quiet, but he will bark for food, or attention when someone new visits the home.
Lucky is a happy and healthy senior. He is neutered, micro-chipped, up-to-date on rabies, distemper, leptospirosis, bordetella and the H3N2 canine flu vaccines. He is fecal and heartworm–tested, dewormed and on monthly heartworm protection.

Premise: Filmed version of the Tony-award winning Broadway musical about Alexander Hamilton and the “damn fool that shot him” (Aaron Burr, sir), created by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Behind-the-Scenes: Filmed during one of the original cast’s final performances in June 2016. [Fun fact: I bought tickets for August 2016 and just missed the original cast – didn’t matter, the show and performers were still amazing.] Disney paid a pretty penny (approx. $75M) for the distribution rights. It was originally set to debut in theaters in October 2021, but due to the pandemic, Disney moved it up a whole year to coincide with the Fourth of July holiday.
The Good: If you’ve never had a chance to see Hamilton on stage – didn’t come to your city, too expensive, just got lazy, now you get to be in the room where it happened. And not just in the room – but sitting center orchestra level with a front row seat! I’ve always said Hamilton is one of the top 5 pieces of art (music, painting, movies, theater, books) of all time – don’t ask me the other 4, I just know Hamilton takes one of those slots – so any film version of that show is an automatic 5-star film. Just need to point the camera and shoot. How great then to be able to report that this film is pretty much perfect at what it is. Director Thomas Kail and his editors do a fantastic job of cutting between wide shots and close-ups on the actors, and it’s those close-up shots that really deliver the goods. Getting to see these actors in that way – the cast here is one of the finest assembled – is a thrill, and some of the songs really take flight in this format. Angelica’s (Renee Elise Goldsberry) “Satisfied” is a stunner, as is George Washington’s (Christopher Jackson) “One Last Time.” Daveed Diggs and Jonathan Groff steal every scene they’re in, and the film helps you appreciate all of the smaller comedic moments sewn throughout the show. And those songs! Each one a banger. Musicals just don’t get any better.
The Bad: I loved this, but it can’t quite match seeing it live, and I still want a movie adaptation of the show. Think that could be amazing.
Should You See It?: Uh, do you even need to ask? Of course, yes. I have to admit though it was super weird to finish this brilliant, ambitious, inspiring ode to America, while still living in the nightmare age of Trump. Hamilton feels like what we could be as a country, rather than what we currently are. I hope November offers us a new opportunity to “look around, look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now.”

Eric Trump has been my favorite of Don’s children. I don’t count Tiffany and we media types aren’t suppose to acknowledge the little boy living on Pennsylvania Avenue, so I only consider the first three for my ratings.
Eric isn’t as blatant about his greed as his sister, Ivanka, who has made more than one hundred million dollars while holding a government position in daddy’s administration. He stays out of the limelight more than his brother Don Jr., who thinks he’s a powerful celebrity because he has the same name as his father. So while it may be by default, Eric gets my top spot among the Trump offspring.
I also think that at one time, Eric had a good heart and cared about other people besides himself. It was his idea to start the children’s cancer charity. Apparently Eric realized he was living a charmed life. He knew he was born on third base and it wasn’t his triple that got him there. The charity was his way to give back to humanity. It was doing great work, too…until dad got involved. Don saw a way to make money off sick and dying children. As usual, with Donald Trump greed takes precedent over everything.
Saturday Night Live has been doing political humor for more than four decades. No one is off limits. The adult children of politicians are fair game, especially if they are in the public eye and involved even slightly in politics. That describes the Trump children to a tee. For the last few seasons, the Trump brothers have been making regular appearances during the Weekend Update segment. Mikey Day plays slick big brother Don Jr. to Alex Moffat as child-like Eric. The portrayals are way over the top, especially Eric, who is almost always acting like a not so bright first grader. We’ve seen scenes such as Eric intrigued while playing with a fidget spinner and also trying to color between the lines. Word on the street is Eric isn’t too happy with how he’s being played….and can you really blame him? He can’t really be as dumb as SNL makes him out to be, right? After all, the dude has a degree in business and finance from Georgetown University, where he graduated with honors. You don’t get that playing with a fidget spinner for four years!
That brings us to Thursday. The FBI arrested Ghislaine Maxwell, the associate and madame for the late Jeffrey Epstein. Maxwell was charged with sexual abuse of minors, as well as perjury. The FBI has been searching for her for a year and finally found her hiding out in an estate in New Hampshire. It was a good day for justice.
The good day for justice quickly turned into a bad day for Eric Trump. Epstein and Maxwell were known to hobnob with the rich and famous. It doesn’t get more famous than the Clinton’s. Eric found a photo of Bill walking his daughter Chelsea down the aisle on her wedding day. Looking on, with a red circle around her head, is Ghislaine Maxwell. Eric couldn’t help himself and tweeted out the photo with his caption: “Birds of a feather”
Oh My….what could possibly go wrong with that tweet?
Apparently Eric didn’t know that his dad also had a relationship with Jeffrey Epstein? Hell, we’ve all seen the quote to New York Magazine from 2002:
“I’ve known Jeff for 15 years. Terrific guy. He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side.”
Eric had to know about this, didn’t he? He couldn’t be that dumb, could he? And to make it worse, immediately after posting his tweet came the responses. Multiple photos of daddy with Epstein and Maxwell. Even Donald’s new BFF George Conway tweeted a photo of them together, with the question, “Why would he tweet this?” Eric, you want to answer that? You had to know these pictures existed? So, why Eric, why? You can’t be that dumb, can you?
It’s a good thing SNL is on hiatus for the summer….at least for Eric Trump. If they weren’t, you know that Don Jr. and Eric would be making a 4th of July visit to Weekend Update. You know they’d be playing this up big. Fake Eric would be spinning that fidget thingy hard. He’d have it moving in overdrive!
SNL isn’t due to return until late September. By then, this story will be long forgotten. We’ll be on to whatever is the next big news item. But if Eric Trump continues to act like he did on Thursday, I’m sure we’ll see him again on SNL. Keep that fidget spinner ready.
My so called friends think it’s time to edit this section. After four years, they may be right, but don’t tell them that. I’ll deny it until they die!
I can’t believe I’ve been writing this blog for four years.
It started as a health/wellness thing and over the years has morphed to include so many things that I don’t know how to describe it anymore.
I really thought this was going to be the final year of the blog but then Donald Trump came along. It looks like we’re good for four more years..God help us all!
Oh yeah…the biographical stuff. I’m not 60 anymore. The rest you can read about in the blog.

What a surprise to find the Charlatans in my Release Radar. Nearly 20 years old, Between 10th and 11th (Expanded Edition) got a proper expansion, and on double, clear vinyl to boot. Probably the most exciting thing on my #4THOFJULYRADAR.
Expanded, available on double clear vinyl and double CD, the reissue contains the original album plus remastered tracks from the often-bootlegged live show from Chicago in 1991, known as Isolation 21.2.91, a holy grail amongst fans.

The latest news gives the Chicago Bears’ incumbent a big advantage.
Recently, the NFL announced the Chicago Bears, along with the rest of the league, would only be playing two preseason games. The preseason schedule was cut short due to concerns over COVID-19 and the logistical challenges it present.
As this global pandemic continues to wreak havoc on professional sports, leagues are trying their best to adapt to the ever-changing environment.
Case-in-point — today NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that the NFL Players Association is opposed to playing preseason games and has proposed an alternative preseason schedule.
With the NFLPA still opposed to preseason games, one possible camp schedule the union has discussed:
3 days: medical/equipment 21 days: strength & conditioning 10 days: unpadded practice 14 days: practice (10 max/8 padded)
The proposed schedule lasts approximately seven weeks and includes padded and unpadded practices, but no exhibition games. This means the teams would roll out of practices and directly into Week 1 with no dress rehearsals.
If that proposal prevails, and there are no preseason games, would it give one Bears’ quarterback the edge over the other in this competition?

Probably, and although it wouldn’t be a huge advantage, it would tend to favor Trubiskyy. Foles has little to no experience with any of the wide receivers on the Bears’ roster. With only 24 days worth of practice time, 10 of which wouldn’t even be in pads, it would be tougher to build a strong rapport with the core.
Moreover, it would be a little more difficult for Foles to show off what he does better than Trubisky, which is diagnosing defenses and recognizing coverages.
Chicago Bears fans know all too well from last year how well Trubisky performed in practice. We heard countless times how he looked great all week in practice, only to fizzle out on Sunday. Trubisky seems to be comfortable in the practice environment and where he shines. Having it serve as the only environment in which head coach Matt Nagy will be able to evalaute his two quarterbacks tips the scales a little in Trubisky’s favor.
Foles, it appears, will have his work cut out for him, and a lot to overcome when training camp begins. Trubisky has the support of his teammates, with whom he’s built strong relationships, and the general manager, who clearly wants (and frankly needs) him to succeed. And this latest news is just one more hurdle.
The famous fairy tale is unclear on the specific brick construction employed by the diligent pig.
The vast majority of Chicago homebuyers don’t know that there are really two different types of brick homes. They see brick and…well…they think the home is made out of brick. It’s a little more complicated than that actually. There is brick veneer and then there’s solid masonry and you can’t typically tell the difference between the two very easily.
Brick Veneer Construction
A lot of the brick homes you see at $1.5 MM and less are actually a frame construction with brick veneer and that’s because they are less expensive to build than solid masonry. The term veneer kinda sounds like it’s a fake brick covering but it’s not. It’s regular, real brick but it’s laid around a wooden frame structure. So the core of the house is the same as you would find in a home with siding but the outer layer is brick. In between the frame and the brick is a layer of sheathing, which is often gypsum (a drywall-like material) or maybe even plywood, usually wrapped in Tyvek or something similar.
Most of the brick construction in Chicago is brick veneer around a wooden frame.
Here are a couple of photos I took of a brick veneer house in my neighborhood that was under construction. Notice how they used plywood for sheathing in some places and gypsum in others. I have no idea how they decide between the two.
Wooden frame house with sheathing waiting for brick
Brick is laid as a final layer around the perimeter of the house which serves as the main weather barrier.
Brick is laid around the wooden frame with wrapped sheathing.
Solid Masonry Construction
In contrast, the basic structure of a solid masonry house is made from an interior layer of brick – the floor joists sit on this interior layer instead of wood framing. Here is a photo I took of such a house under construction in Lake View.
Solid masonry construction uses an internal layer of large bricks to form the structure of the house.
Note that instead of internal wooden framing the structure of the house is built using thin cinder blocks or CMUs (concrete masonry units). Then another layer of more expensive and attractive brick is applied to the outside of the house. If you look closely at the photo you’ll see that there are protruding, corrugated metal strips set into the cinder block mortar joints that then get sandwiched into the brick veneer mortar joints. This provides additional support to the outer wall and keeps it from separating from the inner wall.
In this particular photo you’ll see that there is a very small gap between the two layers of brick. This is not a great construction technique because that gap is supposed to allow any water that penetrates the outer layer to harmlessly run down the outside of the gap. This close spacing could allow water to penetrate the inner layer of brick.
There are actually a couple of variations of solid masonry construction. When brick homes were built in Chicago 100 years ago they actually used 3 layers of the smaller brick – I assume cinder block hadn’t been invented yet. There are plenty of these 100+ year old brick buildings still around the city and if you have to open up their walls to do some work you often encounter these three layers.
Then, right after the turn of the century, during the housing boom, it became very popular to use a single layer of wide (8 inches) cinder blocks on the sides and backs of buildings to reduce the construction costs. To make these buildings look nicer they often used split face blocks. The only problem is that split face block is extremely porous and needs to be sealed. And because it often wasn’t sealed that usually resulted in some severe water infiltration issues.
Comparing Brick Veneer To Solid Masonry Construction
Everyone knows the story of the Three Little Pigs. The house that best withstood the trials of the Big Bad Wolf was clearly the brick one. The only thing is that we’re not sure whether that was a solid masonry house or a brick veneer house. Dr. Klaus Faust of Harvard’s Department of Comparative Literature has spent his life and a generous federal grant studying this fairy tale. Unfortunately, even after going back to the original clay manuscripts and illustrations he is unable to provide additional insight into this pressing issue. Nevertheless, it’s clear that brick is better than straw or twigs and you can assume that two layers of brick are better than one layer of brick.
In principle you should expect solid masonry construction to be more wind and fire resistant and it isn’t susceptible to rotting or termites. So it’s clearly better and higher end homes are built this way. However, don’t expect a solid masonry house to save you money on your property insurance. While a brick veneer house could come down quickly in a fire a fire that burns long enough will also eventually destroy a solid masonry structure. And a solid masonry house is more expensive to rebuild. When it comes to home ownership you just can’t win.
