Sault’s Untitled (Black Is) is the soundtrack for the 2020 revolutionon July 16, 2020 at 1:00 pm

Sault are an anonymous UK trio who create music grounded in the tenets of Black rights and Black freedom, and there’s never been a better time than now to hear their message. Last year they put out their debut album, 5, and an almost immediate follow-up, 7, and this summer they released their third record, Untitled (Black Is)–like its predecessors, it came out on UK label Forever Living Originals without the fanfare of a typical promotional campaign. Though the band omit biographical information from their liner notes and website, the metadata buried in the digital versions of these songs reveal that they were written by Forever Living Originals labelmates Dean Josiah Cover (aka UK producer and singer Inflo) and Cleopatra Nikolic (better known as singer Cleo Sol). And if the voice on tracks such as “Black Is” sounds familiar, that might be because it belongs to fellow Forever Living Originals artist and Chicago native Melisa Young, aka Kid Sister, who’s listed in the metadata as a writer on six of the album’s 20 songs. Sault announced the release of Untitled with a short statement on their website that suggests the album is the first in a series and provides context for its release: “We present our first ‘Untitled’ album to mark a moment in time where we as Black People, and of Black Origin are fighting for our lives. RIP George Floyd and all those who have suffered from police brutality and systemic racism. Change is happening . . . We are focused.” The moving, protest-ready march “Hard Life” and the Afrofunk-infused “Bow” (featuring guest singer Michael Kiwanuka) make it clear that the revelatory jazz-soaked soul music on Untitled is a call to action. Sault have released a new album of freedom songs that we should all sing together as the revolution plays out during this Amerikkkan summer. v

A different kind of ‘car jams’ on the gig poster of the weekon July 15, 2020 at 10:55 pm

drive-in_fest_web.jpg

We’re featuring another “drive-in” concert for this week’s gig poster. Live event production companies Sigma Chris, Afrotrak, and Civilized Lifestyle put together a show in August to take place in the south parking lot of Soldier Field. Tickets are sold per vehicle, with a maximum of four people allowed in each. It’s a new/old way to attend larger concerts (and though it’s a more parochial concern, we’re hoping that innovative bookings like this will result in more gig posters).

We’re still happy to take your suggestions for posters to feature each week–and given how thin on the ground actual concerts continue to be, fantasy gig posters remain fair game. E-mail [email protected] with your contact information and poster submission. Even though a few venues are back in business in a limited way, please continue to support staffers who’ve lost work and tips in recent months or who still can’t return to their jobs–here’s our list of fundraisers. And don’t forget record stores! The Reader published a list of local stores that will let you shop remotely.

ARTIST: Brandon Graham at Welldamme
GIG: The Drive-In Fest featuring Lloyd, Bobby V, Pleasure P, Do or Die, DJ LMS, and DJ Sean Mac, Sat 8/22 outside Soldier Field

Paisley Fields makes out and open country musicon July 15, 2020 at 5:00 pm

The country-music world has been slow to embrace its queer community, so it’s been refreshing to see a new generation of queer country artists and songwriters–among them Brandi Carlile, Ty Herndon, and Shane McAnally, who frequently writes for Kacey Musgraves–live out and open lives in the spotlight over the past decade or so without their identities damaging their careers. The songs of New York singer-songwriter James Wilson, who performs as Paisley Fields, have some of the spirit of this new wave of contemporary country rock and pop, but their sound owes more to what legendary out-and-proud Seattle group Lavender Country did in the 1970s than to anything that’s going on now in Nashville. Wilson, who’s queer and nonbinary (and who uses he/him or she/her pronouns interchangeably), was raised in Iowa and moved to Brooklyn in his early adulthood, where he assembled an alt-country band called the Paisley Fields. Shortly after the release of 2015’s Oh These Urban Fences . . . (Red Butterfly), Wilson adopted the band’s name to refer to his own fully realized onstage persona. His latest album, Electric Park Ballroom, is titled after the banquet hall in Waterloo, Iowa, where he learned line dancing, and Ballroom’s songs have a certain boot-scooting exuberance and playfulness that wasn’t quite there on Paisley Fields’ earlier releases. Fields toured with Lavender Country last year, and the two acts later collaborated on the Ballroom track “Stay Away From My Man,” a spirited trad-country bounce in the vein of a Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty duet. Electric Park Ballroom probably won’t be embraced by the Nashville country-pop scene any time soon (the frisky “Ride Me Cowboy” is about exactly what you think), but it’s smart, fun music for folks who want to give new queer country a spin. v
