Later that night, those of us who just love football and watch the entire league were subjected to Sunday Night Football between the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos. Of course, we already know how disgusting it is that the Bears left Patrick Mahomes there for the Chiefs in favor of Mitchell Trubisky. That wasn’t even, however, the most disgusting part about the game.

Of course, Mahomes played well enough to win the football game but it wasn’t the best game he’s ever played. He still made some of those spectacular plays that we are used to seeing him make but the Broncos, all things considered, did a good job containing him. They aren’t that great of a football team right now but they have a lot of heart, especially on defense.

Well, their head coach is Vic Fangio after all. He was the Bears’ defensive coordinator from 2015-2018 and he was awesome. The defense was so good in 2018 as they had all-time great takeaway numbers. They have schemed so well when he was there and it has been a significant downgrade since Chuck Pagano came in. Pagano hasn’t been awful but things just haven’t been the same since Fangio left.

That Broncos defense was clearly playing well under him and he didn’t even have Von Miller who is one of the greatest of all time. They could be good in the coming years if they can figure out a way to improve their offense. It was tough to watch them play so well under Fangio right after watching the Bears defense break against the Detroit Lions. Even when the Bears are done for the day, there are things out there that just make you even more upset about how things have gone.

Blowing a 10-point fourth quarter lead against the Lions who fired both their General Manager and Head Coach less than a week ago is the lowest point thus far in the Bears’ season. The Bears were finally able to run the ball with some authority, and for most of the game, Mitchell Trubisky played like someone who belongs on an NFL roster next season, not in the XFL or selling car insurance.

Yet, the Bears’ defense decided to take the day off work, playing awful down the stretch outside of collecting a nice interception from quarterback Matthew Stafford early in the fourth quarter. Furthermore, the play-calling on offense abandoned the run-game when the team had the lead with under two-minutes left, opting to put the balance of the game in Trubisky’s shaky hands, which ultimately costed them the lead, and the win with one puzzling fumble of the ball.

It’s obvious the Bears have a losing mentality. The players know their season is over. When their defense plays great, their offense goes cold. When their offense finally wakes up, their defense simply is taking a nap.

Clearly the players are not on the same page as their coaching staff. Case in point: other teams with worse records than the Bears are playing with more passion and intensity on both sides of the ball. Bad teams the Bears beat early in the season … the New York Giants for example, are gradually improving each week, while the Bears are only getting worse by the minute.

The Bears are not a team void of talent on both sides of the ball. They’re just playing well-below their capabilities. Blame the front office, the coaching staff, but most importantly, blame the players themselves. Many of them have been Pro Bowlers who are just not living up to their reputations.

To say many of the players who are under contract beyond this season are open to having a fresh start with a new regime in place feels like an understatement, given how the Bears’ public relations team coaches them up for interviews and post-game comments (often to soften up the pushback of another loss). Khalil Mack, Akiem Hicks, and Eddie Jackson, among others have battled and played through many nagging injuries since joining the Pace-Nagy era, only to see their efforts largely go to waste.

Who can blame any player that wants a fresh start with their team when things have been going south for years? That fresh start will likely take place following this season.

It’s too bad the end of the season couldn’t be now. Because all we have as Bears fans is watching endless re-runs of games each week, regardless of who the opponent has been.

Head coach Matt Nagy is probably one of the most heavily searched terms in the sports world right now, as fans continue to wonder just how much longer he will last. It can’t be much longer — that’s for certain.

Chicago’s current 6-game losing streak is one of the more embarrassing stretches in recent memory, and that alone should lead to Nagy’s dismissal. If you add in the fact that the last 6-game losing streak came under Dick Jauron, this whole season becomes even more comical.

Two years ago, if you would have told fans that Nagy would once be mentioned in the same breath as Jauron, most of us would have laughed in your face. The reigning NFL Coach of the Year? Compared to Dick Jauron? That’s ridiculous.

Now, it’s not so funny, is it? The 6-game losing streak is the team’s longest losing streak in 18 years, dating all the way back to 2002 under Jauron.

Most of us remember the Jauron years. Four out of five seasons under Jauron, the Bears finished with a losing record. Aside from the one miraculous 13-3 season that ended with a playoff blunder in the first round, Jauron was an average coach on his best days and a poor coach on most days.

We are now at a whole new low point for Nagy and the Bears. Who would have guessed we would be comparing him to Jauron in some fashion? We even have former players taking shots at Nagy on social media.

The Bears may as well cash in for the rest of the season and look forward to 2021. They will have many issues to fix, starting with the quarterback position which has been botched by Ryan Pace almost as many times as Jennifer Lopez has been engaged.

It’s not just Nagy, though. It’s Pace. It’s Ted Phillips. It’s the entire organization. This organization has been historically cheap, lazy and unwilling to move towards drastic measures. Why not buck the trend and blow it all up right now?

What do the Bears have to lose other than more games? Get rid of them all right now — Nagy, Pace and Phillips.
