Chicago Bears: The Seahawks want what for Russell Wilson? by Ryan Heckman

The Chicago Blackhawks are in a very good spot right now. Going into the season it looked like doom and gloom after they announced that Kirby Dach would be out for a long time. He sustained a wrist injury during the World Junior Classic and that has put his season on hold. Some people wondered if the Hawks were going to be one of the worst teams in the league as a result. These expectations on them made it seem bleak that Dach would return at all because what would be the point?

Well, this team has been awesome. They are firmly in the playoff mix with a record of 13-8-5. They are firmly above the payoff line in the Central Division with six points on the fifth-place Columbus Blue Jackets. Their practice on Monday came after a somewhat successful three-game set with the Tampa Bay Lightning. They collected three out of a possible six points (1-1-1) in that little series which is good for facing the defending Stanley Cup Champions.

Now, in Monday’s optional practice, we saw Dach participate. He also participated in certain non-contact drills with some teammates. It was really good to see him out there working on these drills along with some individual puck handling.

Scott Powers of “The Athletic” confirmed that Dach is going to travel with the Chicago Blackhawks on their upcoming road trip but he will not play. He also states that Jeremy Colliton confirmed he is still a little bit away.

The Chicago Blackhawks, as mentioned before, would get a major boost to having Dach back. He would come right in and be their new top-line center. Jonathan Toews has been out all year long so having Dach come back would really help. Some of the wingers on the team have been awesome so getting a top-end center back would really help.

This is also a huge year in Dach’s development. He is one of the younger players on the team right now but of the young guys, he might have the highest ceiling. It is really good to see him progressing with his injury the way that he is and maybe he can be in the lineup sooner than later. It sounds like he will get a lot of practice in before he gets in a game which is probably a smart idea. No matter the timeline, this is a good sign.

An Austin neighborhood man faces charges after allegedly firing shots during a police chase Sunday in the Homan Square neighborhood.

Latrell Prowell, 28, faces a felony count each of possession of a machine gun as a felon and reckless discharge of a firearm, Chicago police spokeswoman Kelli Bartoli said in an email.

About 10 p.m., officers approached a man they drinking on the sidewalk in the 3900 block of West Polk Street, Chicago police said in a statement.

The man ran from officers and allegedly fired a gun, police said.

Officers arrested him without incident in the 3900 block of West Lexington Street, police said. No injuries were reported and a weapon was allegedly recovered on the scene.

Prowell pleaded guilty in 2011 to aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, court records show.

He was expected to appear in court Monday.

These days, State Street is not such a great street. On empty downtown storefronts, placards read “Retail Space Available.” Tantrum and Forever 21 are closed for good, as are Morton’s the Steakhouse, Everest, and Toni Patisserie. On Adams, the Berghoff Restaurant is boarded up, awaiting an uncertain reopening.

Anyone who remembers the desolate Loop of the 1970s would feel a strong sense of déjà vu walking among the aimless, socially distanced pedestrians on State Street today. Early this year, reports from the Chicago Loop Alliance said foot traffic is less than half of what it was prepandemic, probably because only 20 percent of offices are open with staff working onsite.

“There without question is concern that vacancy in the Loop is higher than it has been,” says Todd Siegel, senior vice president at CBRE Group, a commercial real estate agency. “The biggest challenge that retailers have faced is this inherent lack of footfalls. Since last March, there’s been a focus on the suburbs, on urban submarkets like Bucktown and Lincoln Park.” As Loop businesses sent workers home, retailers followed them to their neighborhoods. Now, as retailers anticipate a partial return of workers to the Loop, storefront business “is starting to claw back a little bit.”

So far, the new businesses don’t look too different from the old ones. Primark, an Irish fast fashion retailer, is scheduled to open on State Street this spring a few doors down from where its spiritual cousins H&M and Forever 21 used to be. Primark chose Chicago as its first Midwest market two years ago and forged ahead despite the pandemic. In the Willis Tower, a new sushi stand and a coffee shop await the return of office workers.

But the Loop won’t make a complete comeback this year, and even when it does rebound, it won’t be quite the same place it was before. The Loop was the city’s fastest-growing residential neighborhood over the past decade, but the pandemic has slowed that growth. And now that businesses have discovered their employees can work remotely, at least part of the time, office footprints are shrinking. Gensler, an architecture and design firm on Madison Street, sent all of its 212 employees home March 16 of last year. They’ve been telecommuting ever since. The company plans to start bringing in its staff once COVID cases decline more, but only 15 to 25 percent initially. They will return to a “new way of working,” in which the office is less a place for focused labor at a desk and more a place “for people to connect,” says Todd Heiser, co–managing director of Gensler’s Chicago office. “We’re not going to go to the office for eight hours. The time in the Loop, the time in their office, maybe because of their commute, people might decide to come in from 12 to 5.”

One reason the Loop has boomed over the past decade is the city’s success in attracting corporate headquarters. Walgreens and Wilson Sporting Goods moved in from the suburbs because young tech talent wanted to live and work downtown. As a result of the pandemic, and the looting and vandalism last spring and summer, demand for residential and commercial real estate is down in the Loop. The Loop currently has two years’ worth of condo inventory (the citywide average is six months), and newly built apartment towers aren’t filling as quickly as expected, says Michael Mandile, who specializes in Loop properties at Mandile + Lorimer Property Group at Compass. Consequently, sale prices are down as much as 10 percent since the pandemic began, and sellers are throwing in amenities such as free parking. Magellan Development Group has scaled back its Lakeshore East project overlooking Millennium Park — lowering the building’s height, eliminating one of two planned hotels, and reducing the number of apartments from 640 to 599.

In office towers, sublease availability is at an all-time high, as businesses such as Uber and the restaurant software startup Toast shrink working space. Demand isn’t coming back this year, or even next, says Peter Billmeyer, cofounder and managing principal of Bespoke Commercial Real Estate. As a result, he doesn’t anticipate much new construction in the 2020s. “[This year] is going to be really challenging for landlords,” Billmeyer says. “If you’ve got an organization of 100 people and 20 to 30 of them work remotely, you’re going to need less space.” Jon Cordell, a CBRE executive vice president, has already helped a law firm move to a new space designed for post-COVID working: The square footage is the same, but it has fewer offices, a larger break area, and a “town hall” where partners and associates can mingle.

Smaller footprints, however, leave commercial landlords with a big problem to solve. Last year, Ben Carson, then the U.S. housing and urban development secretary, suggested transforming office space emptied by the pandemic into affordable housing, though critics call the idea impractical because of how dramatically building infrastructure like plumbing and electric would have to change. Plus, Billmeyer points out, Chicago developers are less likely to make the office-to-apartment switch than Manhattan developers because there is more space to expand outward here than on an island.

Life science is one area where business has flourished during the pandemic, and it just happens to be a field where Chicago sorely needs real estate. A CBRE report from October noted that the city is seeing a surge in demand: The vacancy rate for the 248,593 square feet of lab space in the central business district was zero at the time of the report, while the number of tenants seeking laboratories has tripled since 2019. Sterling Bay and Related Midwest both had large life science projects planned on the fringes of downtown prepandemic, and if the trend continues, it’s not hard to imagine them looking to office conversions, as developers in Manhattan and San Diego have.

Even after the pandemic, the Loop will never return to its ’70s desolation. As the vaccine rolls out, theaters and restaurants will reopen, workers will return, and the area will remain the economic heart of the Midwest. The professional class’s return to cities is a social trend that was interrupted but will not be reversed. Gensler’s Heiser, a Chicago native who lives and works in the Loop, says that if the city could recover from a fire, it can recover from COVID. “Chicago is a very resilient city,” he says. “Chicago understands in its DNA, from 1871, how to reinvent itself.”

Chicago Bears should risk it all for Russell Wilson in 2021 by Vincent Parise

The Chicago Blackhawks were smoked by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first two games of the season at the Amalie Arena in Tampa Bay, Florida. It had some people thinking that the Hawks were going to be the worst team in the league, especially after they went down to play the Florida Panthers in Sunrise and got smoked again. Well, since leaving Florida, it has been a great season for the Hawks. Going into this three-game set with the Lightning, it was hard to forget how the first two went but this team is different now.

The Chicago Blackhawks went 1-1-1 against the Tampa Bay Lightning in their three-game set.

The first of three games was probably as disappointing of an ending as you could see as a fan of the team on the wrong side. Victor Hedman’s shot was deflected by Alex Killorn and crossed the goal line with 0.1 seconds left on the clock in overtime. Boom, the Lightning win before the Hawks even have a chance in the shootout. It was one of the closest calls you will ever see.

The very next night needed the extra session as well. The Hawks bounced back strong and got it to overtime again but they wanted a different result this time. The Lightning had a 4 on 3 power play in the final minute of the OT period and came oh so close to doing it again for the second night in a row but the Hawks prevailed. In the shootout, Malcolm Subban and Philipp Kurashev did what needed to be done and the Hawks won.

Right there they should be proud of how the series has gone. We all said that getting three out of six possible points vs the champs would be acceptable. You know you are feeling good, however, when that final game ends in a loss and you are still mad about it despite the three earned points we wanted.

The Hawks were up 3-0 before the Lightning roared all the way back to score six unanswered and win the game 6-3. It was a tough game because five points out of six were on the table but then they had to settle for only three. Things like that are going to happen, especially against teams like the lightning, but that doesn’t mean it should be acceptable. It stings but they were able to hang with one of the three best teams in the league over three.

Now, they have to look forward. It wasn’t nice of the schedule makers to make the Blackhawks play the Dallas Stars twice right after the Lightning three times but that is the way it is. Both teams are the reigning Stanley Cup finalists but the temporary division realignment has them in the same group.

The Stars have had a tough season because of some COVID-19 related issues along with some poor play in response but they are still the Stars. If the Hawks want to take advantage of a team like that, they need the same energy they had in the first two and a half games of this Lightning series. Now that we know who they can hang with, we have to really believe in them against anyone.

Chicago Blackhawks: Three points vs TB Lightning is outstanding by Vincent Parise

The Chicago Bears are a very overrated franchise in terms of their all-time relevance. They haven’t been a winning franchise in over 30 years. In all of those years, they have never had a franchise quarterback that is considered a superstar. A lot of people consider Sid Luckman as the greatest Bears’ quarterback of all time and he played from 1939-1950. Jay Cutler is statistically the best which just tells you everything you need to know. For these reasons, they need to risk it all to get one of those elite players under center.

It is time for the Chicago Bears to risk it all on a quarterback in 2021.

Russell Wilson is the big name on the block right now. His name has been in the trade rumors over the past few weeks and the Bears are connected to the rumors. That is the type of deal that could change the franchise forever. He wouldn’t have to do much to be the best that the team has ever had.

Wilson has four seasons of 4000 or more yards and one season with 3900. In the 100 years that the Chicago Bears have existed, they have never had a single quarterback throw for more than 4000 yards. Wilson would move the ball on offense in a way that no one ever has for them.

The Bears have a pretty good roster. They went 8-8 for two years in a row with two quarterbacks in Nick Foles and Mitchell Trubisky who don’t help them win at all. If you plucked Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks and placed him on the Bears, they would become an NFC North contender right away. Their defense has been awesome for years but they are being wasted and overused because the offense doesn’t help them at all. Wilson would change all of that.

For every reason mentioned already, the Bears should risk it all to get him. Do the Seahawks want three first-rounders? Awesome, give it to them. It isn’t like Ryan Pace would do anything useful with those picks anyway. Roquan Smith is the only first-round pick that Pace has hit on during his entire tenure with the Bears. Give them away for Wilson if you can.

It would also probably cost a couple of good players that they have on the roster and they should absolutely do that too. This team has been going nowhere for a very long time and they are going to continue going nowhere until they get an impactful quarterback. It is time to change that if you are Ryan Pace trying to keep your job. He needs to risk it all because he will be gone if he misses this year anyway.

As we enter what will be one heck of a week for the NFL, the Chicago Bears are still in the thick of headlines when it comes to a potential Russell Wilson trade.

This is going to be a crucial, eventful, and flat-out shocking week in some respects. Teams are going to make the majority of their cuts as they prepare to move forward with a lower salary cap than typical years. As we have heard by now, it’s going to be a “massacre” of cuts.

Coupled with those types of moves, we could end up seeing a fair amount of trades. Would that include the Bears being able to pull off a deal for Wilson?

The Bears have been rumored to be a front-runner in the race to land Wilson if he is traded, but no one knows for sure if the Seahawks will be willing to actually pull the trigger. What we do know is that the Bears are definitely going after Wilson, and they have made him their priority, per Brad Biggs of The Chicago Tribune.

What will it realistically take for the Bears to get Wilson, though? Everyone has their theories. However, no one knows for sure until it happens.

Austin Fuges, a friend of ours over at the Lake Shore Live Podcast, has an inside scoop on what the Seahawks have been asking for in a trade for Wilson.

It’s important to remember that the initial asking is a base line, and the players involved in talks are not necessarily all going to be in the deal. But, the following assets have been discussed, and as you would probably expect, are quite a bit.
