Today is the second day of Pilsen Open Studios, happening in the neighborhood from noon-8 PM along 18th Street and elsewhere in the area from Halsted to Western. Yesterday we mentioned where to catch some of our favorite highlights, but you can see a more complete list of vendors and activities on the Pilsen Open Studio’s Vendor/Event Map. (MC)

Tonight the Chicago Humanities Festival (CHF) brings singer-songwriter Margo Price to the Old Town School of Folk Music’s Maurer Concert Hall (4544 N. Lincoln). The Grammy-nominated country superstar will be in conversation with Jes Skolnik, Bandcamp Daily senior editor and past Reader contributor. Price will discuss her new memoir, Maybe We’ll Make It, and her approach to carving a path in an industry famously hostile to women. Then she’ll perform an intimate solo set and sign books. Tickets are $20-$35 (free for CHF members), and books are available as a $23 add-on (that’s 20 percent off the cover price. (MC)

Here are some music options for today with links to past coverage by our music writers:

If you’re curious about Chicago’s Christian Tabernacle Concert Choir after reading contributor Robert Marovich’s review of their new album Legacy, you can catch members of the gospel ensemble online as they perform during the Christian Tabernacle Church service. It’s livestreamed to the church’s Facebook page every Sunday at 1:30 PM. Baltimore hardcore and rock band Turnstile headline the Aragon Ballroom tonight (6 PM; 1106 W. Lawrence, all-ages), where they’ll be joined by fellow Baltimorians: rapper JPEGmafia and indie rocker Snail Mail. Advance tickets are still available through Live Nation. The Flying Luttenbachers, described in Gossip Wolf last week as a “brutal prog squad,” bring their sonic assault to Liar’s Club this evening (1665 W. Fullerton), where they’ll be joined by Pittsburgh noise-rock band Microwaves and the grimy rock of Chicago band Something is Waiting. It’s a $10 show open to those 21+, and tickets are available at the door. My Agenda colleague and fellow Reader staff member Micco Caporale told us about rising art-punk band Automatic last week. They’re performing tonight at Empty Bottle (1035 N. Western) in a 21+ show with Chicago pop-punk band Clickbait opening. DJs from the Chicago label Beloved will start the show with a set at 8:30 PM. Advance tickets ($15) are available at Eventbrite. (SCJ)

Success hasn’t blunted Margo Price’s sobering vision of a dysfunctional America

It’s been heartening to see a wave of country artists who have rejected the hat-act simplicity and cornpone sentiment that’s tarnished the genre now verging on becoming the new mainstream. Among this rising crop of players is Margo Price, whose surprise success with her 2016 debut, Midwest Farmer’s Daughter (Third Man), hasn’t altered her sober…

Chicago’s Christian Tabernacle Concert Choir honors its own traditions with its first album release in two decades

Legacy, the Christian Tabernacle Concert Choir’s first release in 20 years, is a joyous collection of gospel songs and hymns, including many from the Chicago group’s original repertory. Dedicated to Christian Tabernacle’s founder, Pastor Maceo Woods, who died in January 2020, Legacy evokes the church’s 60-plus-year history of gospel supremacy with its old-school playlist, its…

‘Brutal prog’ maestro Weasel Walter debuts a Chicago lineup of the Flying Luttenbachers

Guitarist and drummer Weasel Walter, the “brutal prog” purveyor best known as longtime leader of the Flying Luttenbachers, left Chicago in 2003 for San Francisco and later moved to New York—but he sure has been popping up around here an awful lot lately. This wolf is starting to suspect he’s living in our town once…

Chicago Bears: 5 things to watch against the New England PatriotsTodd Welteron October 23, 2022 at 4:06 pm

Use your (arrows) to browse

The Chicago Bears will be on national television again. Apologies in advance to America. This time it is a Monday Night Football matchup against the New England Patriots.

The last time the Chicago Bears played at Foxboro the Patriots won 51-23. It was such a blowout that New England scored 21 points in less than a minute.

That was when quarterback Tom Brady was still with New England. Legendary head coach Bill Belichick is still around and you can bet after the debacle the Bears had two Thursdays ago, he will have a game plan in place to get another blowout victory.

The Chicago Bears’ chances of winning are not great. The main reason is the Bears’ offense continues to sputter.

The Chicago Bears rank dead last in the NFL in passing and are 30th in scoring. The other reason is the Bears’ run defense ranks 31st at stopping at the run. New England loves to run the football.

It might be a long night but there are a few things to keep an eye on that might allow the Bears to pull off a stunning upset (or at least make it worth your while to tune in).

Can the Chicago Bears’ offense avoid the 1 thing Bill Belichick will gameplan for?

Belichick is tied with Chicago Bears founder and legendary head coach George Halas for the second-most career victories by a head coach. One way Belichick has racked up all those wins is by making sure his defenses take away the opposing team’s best weapon or the one thing they do best.

The Bears’ offense is abysmal right now so there is not a whole lot to take away. Belichick could choose to game-plan wide receiver Darnell Mooney out of the picture. Mooney has caught 13 passes for 214 yards in his last three games.

The more likely scenario is Belichick will make sure the Patriots’ defense does everything it can to stop the run. The one thing the Bears’ offense has been able to do is run the ball. They currently rank second in the league in rushing.

David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert have formed an effective one-two punch at running back. While the offensive line has struggled mightily in pass protection, they are a wrecking crew when it comes to run-blocking. Quarterback Justin Fields has shown he can be a great runner when flushed out of the pocket.

Expect Bill Belichick to have a lot of eight-man fronts to contain the Chicago Bears’ rushing attack. He will do everything he can to force the Bears to throw the ball and keep Fields from getting out of the pocket.

The offensive line along with Montgomery and Herbert has to be up to the task to stay effective in the game. Also, it appears head coach Matt Eberflus may switch things up and have Herbert as the starting running back.

The Bears seemed to have a regular RB rotation between David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert: 2 or 3 series for DMo, then 1 for Herbert.

Eberflus hinted that may change.

“We’re going to go with the hot hand. Whoever’s hot right there we’re going to stay with him & go from there.”

‘Explosive’ LaVine debuts with 23 in Bulls’ losson October 23, 2022 at 3:32 am

CHICAGOBulls guard Zach LaVine made his season debut against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday, scoring 23 points in 28 minutes in the 128-96 loss.

LaVine missed the first two games of the season as he continues to recover from offseason surgery on his left knee. He played in the Bulls’ first three preseason games and reiterated throughout early training camp that his knee felt good before he began to experience discomfort after practice ahead of the season opener.

Coach Billy Donovan acknowledged the Bulls will have to monitor LaVine’s workload throughout the season, especially when they are playing back-to-back games.

“There’s nothing wrong with him structurally, he’s fine,” Donovan said prior to the game Saturday. “It’s just something that we’ll have to manage. We knew we were going to have to manage that going into the season. We just didn’t know when or what it will look like.”

LaVine, who signed a five-year, $215 million extension this summer, made his second straight All-Star team last season en route to averaging 24.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.5 assists on 47.6% shooting.

Sources: Silver talks possible tanking solutionson October 22, 2022 at 7:56 pm

NBA commissioner Adam Silver, in recent comments to Phoenix Suns employees, addressed possible solutions for tanking while noting that he understands why teams would do it when a “once-in-a-generation player” is about to enter the league, according to sources who were present.

Calling it a “serious issue” that has sparked “hundreds” of meetings, Silver’s comments came this week during a question-and-answer session in the Suns’ arena, where Silver also apologized multiple times on behalf of the league office to a large group of Suns employees for workplace misconduct under majority team owner Robert Sarver.

During the session, one employee asked Silver about tanking, a theme that is widely expected to dominate the league conversation with 7-foot-4 French phenom Victor Wembanyama — a potentially franchise-altering prospect — being projected to be the No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft.

“We put teams on notice,” Silver told employees. “We’re going to be paying particular attention to the issue this year.”

1 Related

Speaking of a concept in European soccer, Silver told employees that the league has thought about relegation as a potential solution to ensure the worst-performing teams are incentivized to compete. But the commissioner then said relegation would be “destabilizing” to the NBA.

In such a scenario, Silver told employees, relegation would essentially mean demoting the worst one or two teams to the G League while promoting the best team or two from the G League to the NBA.

“It would so disrupt our business model,” Silver told employees. “And even if you took two teams up from the G League, they wouldn’t be equipped to compete in the NBA.”

In an effort to help reduce tanking, the NBA flattened draft lottery odds in 2019, so now teams with the three worst regular-season records each have a 14% chance of winning the lottery. (Before that, the team with the worst record had a 25% chance, the second-worst team had a 19.9% chance and the third-worst team had a 15.6% chance.)

Still, Silver told employees that tanking remains an issue this season.

“It’s something we have to watch for,” Silver said. “A draft is, in principle, a good system. But I get it, especially when there is a sense that a once-in-a-generation player is coming along, like we have this year.” Silver didn’t mention Wembanyama by name, sources present said, but added that the league will adjust as necessary.

“Teams are smarter, they are creative, and they respond — we move, they move — so we’re always looking to see whether there’s yet a better system,” Silver told employees.

Silver also addressed a question about league expansion, which he told Suns employees the league will look at more closely once it is through its upcoming television rights negotiations. (The NBA’s current TV rights package, a nine-year deal with ESPN and Turner Sports, is slated to expire after the 2024-25 season.)

“In order to evaluate any teams coming in, we need to know where we stand from a media standpoint; that’s obviously our most significant form of revenue overall,” Silver told employees.

But Silver also discussed the “potential dilution of talent” — that is, adding more teams would weaken the overall product.

“None of us can remember going into a season where there was a perception of so much competition, but, still, the goal is to have 30 competitive teams, not 20, or whatever it is, so think we do pay attention to the dilution factor,” he told employees.

Still, Silver said that the league is, overall, doing well and that there is no shortage of strong candidates for new teams in new cities, though he didn’t name any specific cities. Las Vegas and Seattle are considered likely candidates for new NBA teams should the league expand.

Chicago Bulls: This heartbreaking loss is their first of the yearVincent Pariseon October 22, 2022 at 2:00 pm

The Chicago Bulls are a team that needs to get as many wins as possible as they are dealing with a bit more adversity to start this season than they did last season. Last year, their impressive start allowed them to tread through some tough months to end the season and still make the playoffs.

It is a team that might not be afforded the opportunity this year because it is going to be much harder this year because of a few key injuries. They are going to be without Lonzo Ball for a while and Zach LaVine is missing from these first couple of games.

Earlier in their week, they stunned the Miami Heat on the road to sneak away with their first victory of the season. That was a great win without LaVine to begin the year and start hot. That made a game against a much weaker Washington Wizards feel so much more important.

These might be the types of games that the Bulls need to take in order to be a playoff team this year. That is why this one felt so heartbreaking even though it was the second game of the year. It is the fact that they had the chance to take it and they missed it.

Although they were down 15 at one point, they came all the way back. Guys like DeMar DeRozan, Ayo Dosunmu, and Nikola Vucevic had strong games down the stretch but it wasn’t enough to outlast the Wizards who took a 102-100 victory on their home court.

The Chicago Bulls came so close to pulling off a major comeback victory.

DeRozan made a great play to finally get it tied at 100. The Wizards scored a two to make it 102 to 100 with enough time for the Bulls. DeMar took a game-winning three-point shot but it missed as time expired. As mentioned before, it was a heartbreaker that they could have had but didn’t.

Even a stud like DeRozan misses a big shot every now and again. Making it close without LaVine is huge but it would have been nice to start 2-0.

However, they have a chance to bounce back big with their home opener on Saturday night against the Cleveland Cavaliers. This should be a lot of fun.

This potential Blackhawks prospect was amazing on FridayVincent Pariseon October 22, 2022 at 1:00 pm

The Chicago Blackhawks are 2-2-0 and most fans are not thinking about the 2023 NHL Draft at this point of the season. However, looking at the roster and the potential transactions that might be made this season would lead anyone to believe that the Hawks will be near the top of the draft.

If they are, there are a few good players that will be of consideration. Connor Bedard is the number one guy on most people’s big boards right now. Anything could happen but he has been the consensus number-one prospect in this draft for a long time now.

However, being the worst team in the league guarantees you nothing considering the lottery system. That is why it is important to look at other prospects. This draft is a little bit different though because it has a player that could push for number one but be a very good number two.

That player is Adam Fantilli. He is a centerman that plays for the University of Michigan. He has some elite already drafted NHL prospects on his team already helping him develop his game which is nice to know too.

The Chicago Blackhawks could certainly use a prospect like Adam Fantilli.

On Friday, he had the game of his life as he scored his first career NCAA hat trick against Lake Superior State University. That came in a 5-2 victory for the blue.

HAT TRICK! ???? pic.twitter.com/h6SMev5ToF

— Michigan Hockey (@umichhockey) October 22, 2022

It should be a very good season for Fantilli as he has a lot of talent on that team to work with. By the end of the year, their number five ranking might be a number one ranking but that remains to be seen. If this freshman continues to score like this, it could happen.

There is no guarantee that Fantilli ends up with the Hawks but they could certainly be in the mix for him. There will be people that try to say he should go ahead of Bedard as the number one pick but that feels out of touch.

However, landing a player like this would be amazing for the future. Fantilli joining the young group of prospects that the Hawks have put together would really help them. For now, we will just have to keep watching him dominate as a freshman at Michigan and see what happens.

It should be noted that college hockey is amazing right now. Fantilli is there and so are other already drafted prospects like Luke Hughes (New Jersey Devils), Logan Cooley (Arizona Coyotes), and Isaac Howard (Tampa Bay Lightning) to name a few.

This league is becoming a great place for developmental hockey and it is also incredibly entertaining. More and more NHL teams will be impacted by it as the years go along. The Blackhawks could really take advantage.

Chicago Blackhawks send United Center crowd home happyVincent Pariseon October 22, 2022 at 12:00 pm

The Chicago Blackhawks front office secretly wants them to lose way more than they want them to win. There are some very good players at the top of the 2023 NHL Draft that they would like to have the opportunity to look at.

However, the players on the current roster trying to make a living aren’t thinking about that. That is especially true for the home opener. After a long summer of big moves being made using the word “rebuild”, it was nice to just see some hockey back at the United Center.

It wasn’t an easy game for the Blackhawks at all against the Detroit Red Wings. They found themselves down 3-1 at one point. Two former Blackhawks in Pius Suter and Dominik Kubalik scored in addition to Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin.

The one goal scored there was a penalty shot goal for Andreas Athanasiou. It was a very pretty goal for him as he went for it on the most exciting play in hockey. You don’t see penalty shots every day and he didn’t miss his chance.

The Chicago Blackhawks needed a comeback effort to try and win on Friday.

When down 3-1, they started to turn the tide when Alex Stalock came in to replace an injured Petr Mrazek who has had better games as an NHL goalie. Stalock went the rest of the game without allowing a goal to Detroit.

Philipp Kurashev scored at 3:46 of the third period to bring them within one. Just over six minutes later, Connor Murphy scored a short-handed goal to tie the game when it was least expected. It was starting to feel like one of those special home games.

Max Domi made sure of it when he found himself with a point-blank shot in overtime and he did not miss. He scored his second of the season to give the Hawks the 4-3 comeback victory in overtime. It was a fantastic way to break into the home schedule.

There are going to be a lot of people supporting the tank method throughout this season but it was nice to see the Hawks get a big home win in their first game of the year at the United Center. The crowd certainly went home happy.

You never know if this was the last-ever home opener for Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane in Blackhawks sweaters so it was nice to see it end like that. The Hawks are back in action on Sunday afternoon when they take on the Seattle Kraken in a matinee. That should be fun.
