Winter clothing drive, Public Media Institute Halloween party, and more

Do you have spare coats, boots, gloves, hats, or socks? The Rogers Park People’s Survival Program, which is connected to the Chicago-wide collective For the People is leading a winter clothing drive, and searching for these priority items to be redistributed locally. They are also looking for underwear (never worn!), blankets, and basic hygiene products. Please do not bring anything else; the group does not have the capacity for it. For the foreseeable future, donations will be accepted every Saturday from 11 AM-1 PM in Willye B. White Park (meet near 1610 W. Howard). Questions can be sent through Instagram DMs or email: [email protected]. (MC)

The Avondale horror-themed coffeeshop The Brewed (2843 N. Milwaukee, owned by Jen Lemasters and Nick Mayor of Bric-a-Brac Records along with Jason Deuchler, aka DJ Intel) seems like it would be a great place, thematically speaking, to hang out this weekend. Thankfully the shop is collaborating with retailer The Horror House to give you extra reason to come over. Today and tomorrow, you can attend Halloween Hangout, a two-day Halloween-themed market featuring small business and artist vendors, themed drinks for sale, giveaways, and horror movies playing in the background. Plus there’s a costume contest both days, so dress up you and yours before heading to shop. The festivities run from noon-5 PM today and again Sunday evening from 6 PM until 1 AM Halloween Monday. (SCJ)

Looking for a spooky good time while supporting the arts? Maybe a little pre-gaming before some late night Halloween fun? Public Media Institute, which runs Lumpen Radio, Lumpen Magazine, and programs art and cultural events, is holding a festive fundraiser at Co-Prosperity (3219 S. Morgan) featuring DJs Fanita Banana, Logan Bay, and Jeremiah Meece. There will be a costume contest, a drinkable “blood” fountain installation by the art group Spacore, and visual design by August Abitang. The party kicks off at 7 PM and is free for donors and members of PMI; otherwise, it’s $16 to enter. (MC)

If you’re in the spooky spirit but parties aren’t your thing, check out the University of Chicago’s University Symphony Orchestra tonight. At 7 PM and 9 PM, they offer a program entitled “Enchantments & Spells,” a selection of haunting music including Goldmark’s Merlin Overture, Revueltas’ Sensemaya, the Dream Pantomime from Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, and the Dream of a Witches’ Sabbath from Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique. The orchestra will be supported by the University of Chicago Women’s Ensemble and solo singers from the University of Chicago Vocal Studies Program, as well as dancers from the Hyde Park School of Dance. Costumes are highly encouragedespecially for little ones! Catch the show at Mandel Hall (1131 E. 57th) at the University of Chicago. Admission is free, but donations ($10/adults, $5/children and students) are welcome. The 7 PM performance will be livestreamed; go to the ensemble’s website for more information. (MC)

3 sneaky trades the Chicago Bears should make with current glimmer of hopeRyan Heckmanon October 29, 2022 at 12:00 pm

Use your (arrows) to browse

This past Monday night, the Chicago Bears gave fans a glimmer of hope for the remainder of the 2022 season.

For the first six weeks, the offense had been stagnant. Second-year quarterback Justin Fields struggled to stay upright, but also to see the field and make the correct decisions. But, Fields did make enough of those “wow” plays to keep hope alive in his development.

Then, Monday Night Football in Foxboro happened. In a game where the Bears weren’t given a chance, Matt Eberflus’ team went out and dominated the New England Patriots in every aspect of the game.

Now at 3-4, the Bears are no where near being out of contention for a playoff berth — and yes, it seems crazy to be talking about the playoffs right now. But, even if the Bears aren’t a playoff team, they are clearly a team that chooses to compete and ensure they’re in every game. They’re a team that feels as though they’ve garnered some momentum.

With that said, maybe it’s worth the Bears being buyers at this year’s NFL trade deadline.

The Chicago Bears have already been active in the NFL trade market, but after selling, Ryan Poles should also look to buy.

The Bears traded the guy who, just last season, set the single-season franchise sack record. Robert Quinn was shipped off to the Philadelphia Eagles for a fourth-round pick earlier in the week — a trade that made a lot of sense for both sides.

It’s a 4th rounder going to the #Bears, source said https://t.co/Igyf2LqhWr

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) October 26, 2022

Dominique Robinson and Trevis Gipson are the future of the position, and Quinn hadn’t done much yet. This was a victory for the Bears.

On the flip side, Poles should now be looking to add talent if he can do so. There are plenty of teams, right now, who are clearly going to trade some key names.

If the Bears want to add talent at the glaring holes within their roster, and also allow their quarterback to continue developing the right way, Poles needs to analyze the market in order to find some potential bargains.

The following three players would be well-worth the Bears going after, so long as they can land them for the right price.

When will LeBron break the NBA’s points record?on October 29, 2022 at 3:42 am

When LeBron James passed
Karl Malone for second
on the NBA’s career regular-season points list
, he set his sights firmly on Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the
NBA’s current all-time leading scorer.

Abdul-Jabbar has been atop the career points list since April 5, 1984 — eight months before James was even born — when he broke the mark previously held by Wilt Chamberlain. Now James has that record within reach, needing 1,197 points to surpass Abdul-Jabbar’s career total of 38,387.

At his career scoring average of 27.1 PPG, James would need 45 games to rack up that total, putting him on track to break the record on Jan. 28 against the Boston Celtics if he plays every game between now and then. If James misses games at the same rate he did last season, the record-breaking game would come March 12 against the New York Knicks. Through four games this season, James is averaging 25.8 PPG, leaving him slightly behind his career pace.

We’ll have ongoing coverage of LeBron’s quest, including updated game-by-game projections and complete stats, throughout the season.

JAMES VS. ABDUL-JABBAR

James is now in his 20th season, the same number Abdul-Jabbar played in his
career. And while the legendary Lakers big man posted bigger scoring numbers early in his playing days, James’ lengthy prime (18 consecutive seasons averaging at least 25 PPG) has allowed him to close
the gap.

YEAR-BY-YEAR POINT TOTALS

20TH YEAR COMPARISON

“If LeBron breaks the record, and it looks like he has every reason to break
it, I’ll be very happy for him. The game will always improve when records like that are
broken.”

James finished with 28 points in a loss to the Timberwolves, the 1,135th 20-point game of his career — the most in NBA history, surpassing the mark previously held by Karl Malone.

LAST 5 GAMES

“To know that I’m on the verge of breaking probably the most
sought-after record in the NBA, things that people say would probably never be done, I think it’s
just super humbling for myself. I think it’s super cool.”

The lone 40-point performance for James against the Nuggets came more than a decade ago. In the last game before the 2010 All-Star break, James had a 43-point, 13-rebound, 15-assist triple-double, but Denver, led by Carmelo Anthony’s 40 points, prevailed in overtime.

3 Chicago Blackhawks to trade while they’re currently hotVincent Pariseon October 28, 2022 at 10:15 pm

Use your (arrows) to browse

The Chicago Blackhawks finally lost a game after winning four in a row. This looks like a team that can become one of the worst in the league based on their roster. They got off to a good start and that was fun but they might come back down to earth very soon.

The Edmonton Oilers beat them but it took a last-minute (literally in the last minute of regulation) goal by Leon Draisaitl (and four points from Connor McDavid) to get it done. Now, you have to wonder what is going to happen next for them.

We know the stars are going to produce throughout the season and can have good trade value no matter what.

However, there are some depth players that could be traded for more right now while they are hot. These are the three to trade at this stage of the season while they’re playing very well:

1. Sam Lafferty

Sam Lafferty has been very good to start his Chicago Blackhawks season.

The Chicago Blackhawks have seen some great play from Sam Lafferty so far this season. Through seven games so far this season, he has two goals and three assists for five points. That is not bad production at all for a player that gets just under 15 minutes per game.

He has been incredible on the penalty kill as both of his goals were short-handed. That is the type of player that a Stanley Cup contender might pay a lot for. He provides a fair amount of value as a depth piece.

Lafferty is 27 years old so it isn’t like he is a part of the big future plans so if a team is willing to give up something of value for him. The future needs to be the main priority of this team and getting something for him might help him.
