Giannis scores 41 as Bucks blow out Suns, cut NBA Finals lead to 2-1Brian Mahoney | Associated Presson July 12, 2021 at 3:38 am

MILWAUKEE — Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks made the NBA Finals’ return to Milwaukee a slamming success.

The way the Greek Freak is going, the party might just be getting started.

Antetokounmpo had 41 points, 13 rebounds and six assists, and the Bucks pounded Phoenix 120-100 on Sunday night, cutting the Suns’ lead to 2-1.

The first NBA Finals game in Milwaukee since 1974 went to the home team in a romp, with Antetokounmpo and the bigger Bucks overwhelming the smallish Suns to the tune of a 20-2 advantage in second-chance points.

“We knew what type of game it was going to be,” Antetokounmpo said. “We knew we had to come here, play good basketball and compete as hard as possible.”

Game 4 is Wednesday night, with the series guaranteed to go back to Phoenix afterward.

Antetokounmpo, who missed the last two games of the Eastern Conference finals because of a hyperextended left knee and was no sure thing to even be ready to start this series, followed up his 42-point, 12-rebound performance in Game 2 by doing it all again — even making his free throws this time.

Back in front of his own fans and free of the loud counts he’s been hearing on the road, Antetokounmpo went 13 of 17 at the line.

Chris Paul had 19 points and nine assists, but the Suns got next to nothing from his star backcourt mate. Devin Booker shot 3 for 14, scoring just 10 points.

Jrue Holiday bounced back from two poor games in Phoenix with five 3-pointers and 21 points to get the Bucks going again onto the comeback trail, having already overcome one 2-0 deficit in this postseason. Khris Middleton added 18.

Fans broke out their “Bucks in 6! Bucks in 6!” chant as Milwaukee started to pull away in the first half and then again as the benches emptied with the final minutes.

“We knew what we had to do,” Holiday said. “We’ve been in this position before. We knew what this game meant to us and meant to the city.”

The Bucks are seeking their second NBA title and hadn’t even played for one in 47 years. They grabbed control of this game by outscoring Phoenix 30-9 over the last nine minutes of the second quarter, then ending the third with a 16-0 finish.

Fans began making their way to the Deer District outside the arena in the middle of the afternoon, with so many fans decked out in green that Fiserv Forum felt more like Fiserv Forest.

They didn’t get to cheer as much as they wanted early after a strong start by the Suns, who got 12 points from Deandre Ayton in the opening period.

But Ayton was hampered by foul trouble and the Bucks soon ran by the Suns and kept right on going.

Antetokounmpo had seven straight points to finish a 9-0 run in the second that gave Milwaukee a six-point lead, and after Phoenix scored four straight, the Bucks took off again on a 16-3 run.

Bobby Portis had the last two baskets in the half, finishing off a pretty fast break with a dunk for one of them, and it was 60-45 at the break.

The lead was 13 with under eight minutes left in the third when Cam Johnson took a pass near midcourt with an open path to the basket. P.J. Tucker tried to step in but was too late, and Johnson threw it down over him while drawing the foul.

That triggered a 14-5 run that cut it to 74-70 and seemed to have the Suns back into the game. Just as quickly, they were out of it again.

Holiday made two 3-pointers in the next minute and Milwaukee pushed the lead back to nine, and by the end of the third it had ballooned to 98-76.

The Bucks, who lost the first two games against Brooklyn in the second round, avoided falling into a 3-0 hole from which no NBA team has escaped.

They limited the Suns to nine 3-pointers after Phoenix hit 20 in its Game 2 victory.

Ayton and Jae Crowder each had 18 points for the Suns. But Mikal Bridges, who had a career playoff-high 27 in Game 2, took only four shots and had four points.

TIP-INS

Suns: Torrey Craig had two points in 15 minutes after hurting his right knee in Game 2. He came up gingerly after lunging to save a bad pass by Paul that went out of bounds in the second quarter. … Frank Kaminsky, the former college player of the year at Wisconsin, had six points after going scoreless in the two games in Phoenix.

Bucks: Antetokounmpo had his 11th game with 30 points and 10 rebounds, passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1974 for most by a Bucks player in one postseason. Only Shaquille O’Neal (13, 2000) and Elgin Baylor (12, 1962) had more. … Portis and Brook Lopez each scored 11 points.

ALL IN THE FAMILY

Monty Williams, in his second season as coach, said he has received text messages from Steve Nash and others from the Suns’ past as he tries to lead the organization to its first title.

“That’s been pretty cool because I’m new to it and they have adopted me like I’ve been in it for a long time, but it’s really not even two years yet,” Williams said. “So the way that they have embraced me has been pretty cool.”

Man killed, 2 others wounded in shooting outside Cook County Jail: policeJermaine Nolenon July 12, 2021 at 3:20 am

A man was killed, and two women were wounded in a shooting Saturday night outside of Cook County Jail in Little Village on the Southwest Side.

About 8:50 p.m., the 31-year-old man, identified as Londre Sylvester Sunday night by the Cook County medical examiner’s office, and a 60-year-old woman were walking in the 2700 block of West California Boulevard when two people got out of a car and began firing at them, Chicago police said.

Sylvester was struck in the face and chest and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The woman was struck in the knee and taken to Stroger Hospital, where she was listed in good condition.

A 35-year-old woman who was standing nearby was grazed by a bullet on her face, police said. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and was also listed in good condition.

Tyler LaRiviere/Sun-Times

Officers combed California Boulevard in a light rain for evidence, and dozens of markers were seen in the street in front of an area of the jail where visitors can enter. A bloody shirt could be seen on the sidewalk near some markers.

A woman who had gone to the jail complex to visit a detainee said she heard what she thought were fireworks going off as she talked with another visitor at the entrance to a parking lot a block south.

“We were talking from car-to-car and I looked at her and said, ‘Those sounded really close,” she told the Sun-Times. “Moments later, I heard two pops in front of the visiting area, then more in a cadence that couldn’t be anything but gunshots.”

The woman, who asked her name not be used, said they ducked inside their vehicles and waited for the shots to end.

“When the shooting stopped, a Cook Country [sheriff’s officer] said to me, ‘Young lady, I think you better move your car,’ and at first I laughed it off because I didn’t believe him, but he was serious and told me those were gunshots.

“I can’t stop thinking to myself that had I not stopped to talk to my friend, I could have been in that area when they were shooting. I was supposed to be over there,” she said.

Gov. Cuomo’s gun ’emergency’ nothing but political cover for his many mistakesLetters to the Editoron July 12, 2021 at 2:56 am

I find it almost inconceivable that anyone with even a modicum of knowledge would opine that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, with his gun emergency announcement, has put the issue of gun violence and out-of-control-crime on his back.

On the contrary, this action by Cuomo intentionally ignores the primary reasons for a surge in violence and lawlessness — bail reform legislation initiatives and anti-policing policies and rhetoric by him and New York’s legislative bodies.

Cuomo may have succeeded in placating the progressives in New York, and this blatantly transparent political act may have fooled the Chicago Sun-Times editorial board. But it was not necessary and does nothing to address the root causes of what’s going on in New York State and New York City.

Retirees on Social Security fall behind

As a result in part of federal stimulus efforts during the pandemic, as well as a hike in the minimum wage, prices have gone sky-high. They have risen beyond the ability of seniors on Social Security to meet their essential needs. There’s talk now of an increase in Social Security benefits, but it had better be huge.

I find it ironic that millions of Americans are on unemployment when in fact they can work. Older retired Americans worked all their adult years, earned their retirement and paid all those years into Social Security. I have a federal pension, having worked for the Post Office, that needs to be hiked, too. I get very little in the way of Social Security, but I’m speaking up here for other seniors.

Federal crackdown on expressway crimes

As I see it, it is imperative to attack criminality and attempted murder by the use of guns with every forceful measure available, bringing the ultimate penalties and federal charges upon offenders.

If I’m not mistaken, the federal highway systems (our expressways) were created in the 1950s. They are interconnected to create the labyrinth of expressways and freeways we all have become accustomed to, as drivers and passengers, over the decades. These roadways, through various funds, receive federal support for upkeep and upgrades.

Why, then, would criminal offenses committed on our expressways not be subjected to federal penalties, including incarceration? Expressways might otherwise become the wary and fearful passageways of the Wild West stagecoach era.

Such measures deserve support from governmental officials at all levels, including U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin and U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush. It’ time to fight fire with bigger and more effective fire. Let’s stop the mayhem.

Cubs take LHP Jordan Wicks, Sox take SS Colson Montgomery at 21 and 22 in first round of draftSteve Greenbergon July 12, 2021 at 1:51 am

DENVER — The Cubs and White Sox picked back-to-back at Nos. 21 and 22 Sunday in the first round of Major League Baseball’s first-year player draft.

The Cubs took Kansas State left-hander Jordan Wicks, a 6-3, 220-pounder with a mid-90s fastball and what analysts covering event on MLB Network called the best changeup in the draft. Analyst Harold Reynolds predicted Wicks will be the first player in the draft to reach the big leagues.

“It’s a surreal moment,” Wicks said. “It’s something you dream about. And I just couldn’t be happier to be wearing blue right now.”

Cubs vice president of scouting Dan Kantrovitz called Wicks the best college lefty in the draft and said he was in the top 10 overall on the team’s internal draft board.

“To get one of them was definitely exciting,” Kantrovitz said.

The Sox took high school shortstop Colson Montgomery, a 6-4, 205-pounder projected by some scouts as a third baseman. Montgomery, who hits from the left side, said moments after the pick that he wants to be a shortstop. He was his high school football team’s starting quarterback and the basketball program’s career scoring leader.

He seems to have picked the right sport.

“Especially with this moment here,” he said, choked up. “So I guess I made the right decision.”

Sox director of amateur scouting Mike Shirley was in on in Montgomery from the start of his high school career.

“He’s famous,” Shirley said, “and he really piqued my attention early on.”

Catcher Henry Davis, a first-team All-American at Louisville, went No. 1 overall to the Pirates. At No. 2 to the Rangers went Vanderbilt right-hander Jack Leiter, son of longtime big-league lefty Al Leiter. Mississippi State pitcher Will Bednar, the Most Outstanding Player in the College World Series, went 14th to the Giants.

The remaining 19 rounds will unfold Monday and Tuesday.
