After his team’s second straight loss – and consecutive weeks of subpar offensive play – Southern Illinois head coach Nick Hill put the blame for his team’s struggles squarely on his own shoulders Saturday.

“I’m the one who calls the plays,” Hill told the Saluki Radio Network after the team’s 38-28 home loss to Missouri State. “It starts with me. I’m just disappointed. It’s just not good enough.”

After taking a 13-10 halftime lead, the No. 7 Salukis punted on four consecutive second-half drives, which netted a total of 43 yards.

In that time, 17th-ranked Missouri State put up 21 unanswered points and 219 yards of offense to take control of the game and bolster their FCS playoff hopes, improving to 6-3 overall and 5-2 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.

In two weeks, the Salukis (6-3, 4-2) have gone from trailing the MVFC leader by half a game to sitting in a three-way, third-place tie. With two games remaining in the season, there’s little margin for error if the Salukis want to make a second consecutive playoff trip.

“There’s a lack of consistency in putting 60 minutes together,” Hill said. “There’s times on offense where we’re just not very good. It shows up in every game, just too many inconsistencies. We were up 13-10 at halftime. We needed 30 minutes to go win a game, and we didn’t do it.”

Sophomore quarterback Nic Baker threw two fourth-quarter TDs to close the gap and finished 21-for-38 for 262 yards and three scores. However, 12 of his completions came in the fourth quarter with SIU trailing and his 55.3% completion percentage Saturday was his lowest of the season.

“We have to be better,” Hill said. “I have to be better.”

In four straight games against top-20 opponents, the Salukis are 2-2.

“They’re all good teams,” he said. “They’re not going to let you just be inconsistent for too long without beating you.”

Senior wide receiver Landon Lenoir caught seven passes for 104 yards and a touchdown in the game, but said SIU needs to become a more efficient offense.

“We’ve got to do a better job of executing, pulling out games, finishing games and not getting too complacent,” he said. “It’s tough, but I believe in this team, and I think we can turn it around quickly.”

Run game goes quiet

With a stable of four running backs, SIU managed only 36 rushing yards and 1.2 yards per carry against the Bears.

“That’s disappointing,” Hill said. “We’ve got to do a better job. We’ll look at everything. There’s too many lulls.”

SIU’s leading rusher was senior Donnovan Spencer, who gained 15 yards on 11 carries. No other back rushed for more than six yards.

The biggest contribution out of the backfield came from sophomore Justin Strong, who caught three passes for 36 yards, including a 17-yard TD pass from Baker in the first quarter.

2. Defense takes a hit

Saturday was a tale of two halves for the SIU defense. In the first half, the Salukis’ pass rush put together seven sacks of dynamic Missouri State quarterback Jason Shelley.

In the second half, he ran for a 14-yard touchdown, threw a 31-yard scoring pass, connected on a 74-yard pass play and guided the offense to 28 points while being sacked only once. He also had five runs of nine yards of longer in the final two quarters.

“He’s a playmaker,” Hill said. “He made more plays individually. Most of the plays they made were off-schedule plays, him running around. We knew that. That was the key to the game. It was, ‘Could we contain him for an entire 60 minutes?’ Unfortunately, we weren’t able to do it.”

The Salukis allowed MSU to convert 13 of 20 third-down opportunities on the day and gave up 237 rushing yards, including an 87-yard TD run to Kevon Latulas early in the fourth quarter.

3. Special teams standouts

Senior kicker Nico Gualdoni connected on a career-long 55-yard field goal to give SIU its 13-10 halftime lead. He also booted a 50-yarder in the second quarter.

Meanwhile, senior punter Jack Colquhoun averaged 50.9 yards on seven punts. His long of the day was 66 yards, and four of his punts were 50 yards or better. Three of the punts were downed inside the MSU 20-yard line.

News and notes

At long last, senior defensive end Anthony Knighton took over the career sack lead at SIU with his second-quarter sack of MSU quarterback Jason Shelley. He now has 24 career sacks. … Freshman linebacker Jakari Patterson, who sustained a broken bone in one hand last week, did not play Saturday and will miss the remainder of the season, according to Saluki Radio Network. Patterson had 33 total tackles this season and a team-high four pass breakups. His biggest play of the season was a tackle on a two-point conversion in overtime against Western Illinois to secure a victory. … Hill said third downs continue to be a struggle for the SIU offense. On Saturday, the Salukis converted three of 15 third downs, a 20% success rate. “Our third downs have not been very good,” he said. “If you look at teams that are going to score a lot of points, they’re efficient on third down. They’re in the mid-to-high 40s to 50%. Those are an extra two to three series a game that you get to stay on the field.” For the season, SIU is at 35.2%. … Over the two-game losing streak, Southern has allowed seven sacks. “Sacks kill drives,” Hill said.

What’s next?

The Salukis travel to Terre Haute, Ind., for a noon kickoff against Indiana State on Saturday, Nov. 13.

Eliminate the “omnibus” bills, packed with everything like the $3.5 trillion Pelosi monstrosity.

One reason that Congress is hung up on President Joe Bidden’s $3.5 trillion”Build Back Better” and $1.5 trillion “infrastructure” bills is because who the hell knows all of what’s in them?

As House Speaker Nancy Pelosi famously said a few years ago when massive ObamaCare legislation was up for consideration, “We have to pass it to find out what’s in it.”

This lunacy now is back as Pelosi is trying desperately to pas opaque legislation that she’s crammed everything (including the kitchen sink?) in it. Private negotiations are being conducted in the backroom, trade-offs are being quietly made, items are snuck in at the last minute and promised programs are cast by the wayside.

What emerges are literally thousands of pages that can’t be read and by anyone. Is there one person in the cosmos who knows everything that’s lurking within? Are lawmakers expected to do their job in the dark? Is the public supposed to be satisfied with a law massaged by lobbyists and special interests behind close doors?

Of course not, and that’s the purpose of jamming so much into a single (omnibus) bill and passing it lickety-split. Like Pelosi wants.

How much better would it be if the bill was broken down into manageable segments that are limited to a single subject? Want to require two months of parental leave? Then let’s debate that–on its merits. How about free college? Then let everyone have his say, let the press dive into the content, disclosure the special interests behind it, fully disclosure the costs and subject it to an up-or-down vote. On its merits.

That’s instead of a take-it-or-leave it all bill that requires political loyalty above all else and divides lawmaking into either-or-everything opposing camps.

This isn’t some wacko idea. Dozens of state constitutions including Illinois’ have single-subject provisions.

A legislative guide explains the benefits the single-subject provision of the Illinois Constitution:

The single-subject requirement is intended partly to prevent “log-rolling” (putting diverse provisions in a bill to appeal to various groups of legislators, most of whom would not vote for individual parts if each part were put to a separate vote). It is also intended to prevent surprise of legislators and the public by inclusion in a bill of provisions they did not suspect it contained. Such provisions in state constitutions result from a 1795 Georgia law that was slipped past legislators with a provision selling land to speculators for nearly nothing. Illinois courts have said that the single-subject requirement does not limit how comprehensive a bill can be, if the matters with which it deals have a natural or logical connection. And an act amending a comprehensive law may contain any provision that might have been included in the law being amended without violating this section.

But a law is invalid if it includes “incongruous and unrelated matters” or “discordant provisions that by no fair intendment can be considered as having any legitimate relation to each other.”

Well said. (If you want to delve deeply into the topic, you might be interested in reading a scholarly analysis, “No Law Shall Embrace More Than One Subject.” While it was written in 1958, I think it remains relevant.)

How well single-subject laws are followed or enforced is, of course, another matter. What exactly constitutes a “subject” can be broadly interpreted, as numerous courts have. It might require a constitutional amendment. If not, it still would have to get the approval of lawmakers who are just fine with keeping the sneaky omnibus option.

Except for Rep. Russell Fulcher, an Idaho Republican. He has introduced H.R.872, the One Subject at a Time Act. It provides that, “Each bill or joint resolution shall embrace no more than one subject.” And in a dart aimed directly at the “Reconciliation” madness for lumping everything possible into an appropriations bill, Fulcher’s bill states:

(c) Appropriation Bills.—An appropriations bill shall not contain any general legislation or change of existing law provision, the subject of which is not germane to the subject matter of each such appropriations bill provided however, that this section shall not be construed to prohibit any provision imposing limitations upon the expenditure of funds so appropriated.

I don’t hold out much hope for passage. After Fulcher introduced the bill last March, it was assigned to the House Judicial Committee, which passed it on to the Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet, where it will wither and die.

But there’s this: While everyone in Congress might understand the problem, there at least someone out there trying to do something about it.

I typically stay clear of vending machines, given that I am overly health-conscious. Pre-pandemic, when I was traveling (remember that?), I would buy an occasional snack. Aside from the food items not being attractive to me, what about those serving sizes. Five chips in a bag aren’t going to do much for a craving anyway.

How the vending machine works

The vending machine accepts bills (ones, fives, and tens) and credit cards. There’s a note in place telling you that your card will initially be charged $20 as a “hold” before you make your selections. Depending on your bank, you may not see any funds returned right away if you don’t spend the entire $20. I can assure you it’s legit, and the owner is readily available online or by phone for questions or concerns.

What I brought home

Looking through the glass to see all the possibilities is stimulating. There are so many great choices, but I had to start small like my budget. I settled on an adorable paper baby cut-out. When opened, it’s a handmade mini-comic entitled “Changelings.” This artwork is brought to you by Rachel Bard. Rachel also has an Etsy shop. 

The other item is a cone of heavy lavender incense tucked inside a glass test tube with a cap. The incense is handmade and dried with ethically sourced aromatics. Despite having no artistic skills, I’m determined to turn the inside of the test tube into something interesting. Wish me luck.

CHICAGO, IL. Friday, November 5, 2021. 50 more days until Christmas. Not surprisingly, it’s beginning to look and feel a lot like Christmas. Macy’s just announced that they are taking reservations for holiday dining in the Walnut Room and all the holiday menu favorites will be back including Mrs. Hering’s beloved chicken pot pie.

This year’s Official Christmas tree will be taken down today at a home in Logan Square and began its journey to Millennium Park for the grand lighting ceremony on tap for November 17.

A few days later, on November 20, the Mag Mile Light Festival and Parade will attract huge crowds along Michigan Avenue and the River for a host of events, the parade and fireworks.

So here goes, ready or not.

Ice Skating

Skating at the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink in Millennium Park returns for its 20th anniversary season open daily from November 19 through March 6 (weather permitting).

Admission is free, but online reservation tickets will be required. Snacks and hot drinks will be available from Momentum Coffee. Additionally, DCASE will present free skating lessons (reservations required) from 8–9am on most Saturdays and Sundays from November 20 through March 6, 2022, teaching beginner and intermediate ice skating and hockey skills. Free lessons are made possible by the McDonald’s Active Lifestyles Endowment managed by the Millennium Park Foundation. Art Market

The Millennium Park Art Market (following popular 2018 and 2019 editions), to kick off the holiday shopping season. The Art Market in the Chase Promenade North tent will feature 30 local artists selling a variety of items including jewelry, pottery, drawings, paintings and more. Macy’s 114th Annual Great Tree

For 114 years, the Great Tree has been the centerpiece of the Chicago holiday season. This year’s Great Tree theme features a journey of discovery and triumph as a very special reindeer takes to the

Located inside the historic Walnut Room at Macy’s on State Street, the Great Tree stands 45-feet-tall and hangs from the ceiling versus sitting on its base.

While there are some great locations for couples to take pictures of the skyline together, nothing beats being up on the top of a tall building where one can look out over the entire city.

The Bristol

Built-in 1927, this bar has become a prominent location for those looking to enjoy nice drinks with good food.  

It’s located on the North Side of Chicago just off the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Clark Street.  The Bristol is known for being both classy as well as comfortable at the same time.
