The guards were loading an ATM Monday morning in Chatham when two to four gunmen came up and demanded the cash, police say.

Two armored truck security guards were shot and critically wounded during an attempted robbery Monday in Chatham on the South Side.

The guards were loading an ATM at 10:20 a.m. at a Bank of America branch in the 200 block of West 83rd Street when two to four gunmen came up, demanded cash and opened fire, Chicago police said.

One of the guards, a 47-year-old woman, was shot six times and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, police said. She was in traumatic arrest as paramedics brought her to the hospital, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Merritt said.

The other guard, a 46-year-old man, was shot twice in his abdomen and taken to the same hospital in critical condition, police and fire officials said.

Police said the suspects, who were at-large, were wearing all black clothing and masks.

The gunmen did not take any of the cash, according to a spokeswoman for the FBI, which was handling the investigation.

In March, an armored truck crew shot a gunman who tried to rob them at a BMO Harris Bank branch in the North Austin neighborhood.

Monday’s shooting happened across the street from where a 15-year-old Simeon High School student was gunned down in September, just a block away from campus.

Kyle Rittenhouse provoked the bloodshed in Kenosha: ProsecutorAssociated Presson November 15, 2021 at 7:32 pm

Kyle Rittenhouse, right, looks on as the jury is let out of the room during a break during his trail at the Kenosha County Courthouse in Kenosha, Wis., on Monday, Nov. 15, 2021. Rittenhouse is accused of killing two people and wounding a third during a protest over police brutality in Kenosha, last year. | AP

“You lose the right to self-defense when you’re the one who brought the gun, when you are the one creating the danger, when you’re the one provoking other people,” Thomas Binger told the jury.

KENOSHA, Wis. — Kyle Rittenhouse provoked the bloodshed on the streets of Kenosha by bringing a semi-automatic rifle and menacing others, and when the shooting stopped, he walked away like a “hero in a Western,” a prosecutor said in closing arguments Monday at Rittenhouse’s murder trial.

“You lose the right to self-defense when you’re the one who brought the gun, when you are the one creating the danger, when you’re the one provoking other people,” Thomas Binger told the jury.

Binger repeatedly showed the jury a segment of drone video that he said depicted Rittenhouse pointing the AR-style rifle at protesters in the streets.

“This is the provocation. This is what starts this incident,” the prosecutor declared.

Rittenhouse, now 18, killed two men and wounded a third during a tumultuous night of protests against racial injustice in the summer of 2020, in a case that has stirred bitter debate in the U.S. over guns, vigilantism and law and order.

Rittenhouse said he feared for his life and acted in self-defense. Prosecutors sought to portray him as the aggressor who bears responsibility for the bloodshed.

Binger zeroed in on the killing of 36-year-old Joseph Rosenbaum, who was the first man gunned down that night and whose shooting set in motion the bloodshed that followed. The prosecutor repeatedly called it “murder,” saying it was unjustified.

The prosecutor reminded jurors that Rittenhouse testified he knew Rosenbaum was unarmed. Binger also said there is no video to support the defense claim that Rosenbaum threatened to kill Rittenhouse.

Binger disputed the notion that Rosenbaum was trying to grab Rittenhouse’s rifle. “Mr. Rosenbaum is not even within arm’s reach when the first shot occurs,” Binger said. He rejected the idea that Rittenhouse had no choice but to shoot, saying he could have run away.

And Binger argued that once Rosenbaum was wounded, he was not even capable of taking away the gun, which was strapped to Rittenhouse’s body, since he was falling to the ground with a fractured pelvis. Rittenhouse kept firing, delivering what the prosecutor called the “kill shot” to Rosenbaum’s back.

“I think we can also agree that we shouldn’t have 17-year-olds running around our streets with AR-15s, because this is exactly what happens,” Binger said.

The young man from Antioch, Illinois, faces a mandatory life in prison if convicted of the most serious charge against him, first-degree intentional homicide.

After killing Rosenbaum, Rittenhouse shot and killed Anthony Huber, 26, and wounded Gaige Grosskreutz, 28. But he testified that Rosenbaum had chased him down and made a grab for his weapon, that Huber hit him with a skateboard, and that Grosskreutz came at him with a gun of his own — an account largely corroborated by a wealth of video and some of the prosecution’s own witnesses.

Binger said that Rittenhouse also provoked the bloodshed that followed Rosenbaum’s shooting: Huber, Grosskreutz and others in the crowd were trying to stop what they believed was an active shooter, exercising their own right to self-defense.

When it was all over, Rittenhouse walked away like a “hero in a Western — without a care in the world for anything he’s just done,” Binger said, adding: “This is someone who has no remorse, no regard for life, only cares about himself.”

When the prosecutor displayed a photograph of Rosenbaum’s bloodied body lying on a gurney during his autopsy and another of Rosenbaum’s mangled hand, some jurors appeared to avert their eyes from the TV monitors.

As he spoke, Binger walked up to the jury box and lifted the actual rifle used in the shootings as if he were firing, the prosecutor looking down its barrel and pointing it at courtroom wall.

Rittenhouse was 17 when he traveled the few miles from his home to Kenosha on Aug. 25, 2020, as the city was in the throes of violent protests that erupted after a white police officer shot and wounded Jacob Blake, a Black man. Rittenhouse said he went there to protect property.

Supporters have hailed him as a hero who took a stand against lawlessness; foes have branded him a vigilante.

Binger began his closing arguments by telling the jury that Rittenhouse had no connection to the business he said he was going to protect that night, he ran around with an assault-style rifle, and he lied about being an emergency medical technician.

“Does that suggest to you that he genuinely is there to help?” Binger asked.

Each side was given 2 1/2 hours to make its case to the jury before deliberations were to begin. The defense was expected to deliver its closing argument in the afternoon.

Earlier Monday, Judge Bruce Schroeder dismissed a count of possession of a dangerous weapon by a person under 18, a misdemeanor that had appeared to be among the likeliest of the charges to net a conviction for prosecutors.

The underage weapon charge was punishable by up to nine months in jail.

But the defense argued that Wisconsin law has an exception related to the length of a weapon’s barrel. After prosecutors conceded Monday that Rittenhouse’s rifle was not short-barreled, the judge threw out the charge.

Public interest in closing arguments was evident in the morning, when more people than usual stood in a line outside Courtroom 209 to get a seat.

Rittenhouse’s mother, Wendy Rittenhouse, listened intently in court during the jury instructions.

Rittenhouse is white, as are the three men he shot. The case has polarized Americans, raising questions about racial justice, vigilantism, the Second Amendment right to bear arms, and white privilege.

Perhaps in recognition of weaknesses in their case, prosecutors asked the judge to let the jury consider several lesser charges if they acquit him on the original counts. Schroeder agreed to do so Monday as he launched into 36 pages of instructions to the jury, explaining the charges and the laws of self-defense.

In the case of Huber’s slaying, the judge said that if jurors find Rittenhouse is not guilty of first-degree intentional homicide, then they can weigh whether he is guilty of second-degree intentional homicide. If he is not guilty of that count, then they can decide whether he is guilty of first-degree reckless homicide

In his instructions, the judge said that to decide that Rittenhouse acted lawfully in self-defense, the jury must find that he believed there was an unlawful threat to him and that the amount of force he used was reasonable and necessary.

After closing arguments, names were to be drawn to determine which 12 of the 18 jurors who heard testimony would deliberate, with the rest dismissed as alternates.

With a verdict near, Gov. Tony Evers said that 500 National Guard members would be prepared for duty in Kenosha if local law enforcement requested them.

Central Park Bar Taking Avondale by Its Heart this WinterXiao Faria daCunhaon November 15, 2021 at 3:43 pm

Since it’s opening by the end of October, Central Park Bar has quickly swooned the Avondale neighborhood off its feet with their playful retro interior, premium cocktail, and endless fun times. Located at the intersection of Central Park Ave and N Milwaukee Ave, Central Park Bar is a classic corner bar with the charm of an old-school Chicago tavern.

Owned and operated by Four Entertainment Group (4EG), the bar features a massive outdoor 3,500 square-foot “backyard bar” in what was previously an empty city lot adjacent to the bar. Meanwhile, other 4EG bars include aliveOne, Easy Bar, Estelle’s, Remedy and The Owl in Chicago along with several concepts in the Columbus, Cincinnati and Kentucky area. This is 4EG’s first opening in the Chicago area with a developed private patio space.

According to Managing Partner David Halpern, 4EG wanted to retain the character of a classic Chicago tavern while making renovations that were both respectful of the bar’s spirited history and something that the neighborhood would get excited about.

“With many of our long-time staff members living in the area, our pursuit to open a concept in Avondale has been years in the making,” said Halpern. “We always strive to be that go-to bar by your home and Central Park Bar will be no different. Our goal is to keep the charm of the original space, giving it a feel like it’s been here forever. We hope to make the neighborhood proud to call us a resident!”

Central Park Bar offers a signature cocktail menu, craft cocktails, local and international beers. And of course, you’ll also find 4EG’s signature half-price happy hour every Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. In the future, there are plans to have rotating food trucks visit the bar.

Step Back into the Old Chicago Tavern

Located in a building dating back to the early 1940s, CBD Architects and general contractor Go Management Group designed the space. Inside, guests will find easy-going, welcoming vibes at the 80-year-old original wood bar that spans the length of the space and is accompanied by 20 green vinyl barstools with cowboy backs.

Upon a closer look, we see exposed brick walls complemented by warm wood accents from salvaged wood paneling and custom brass tube lighting. And such a vintage charm indeed adds contrast from the original tin ceiling painted in light mint green. Meanwhile, jungle-themed black fabric wallpaper adds some drama by the doors leading out to the patio.

Outside, the 3,500 square-foot “backyard bar” is a casual, down-to-earth gathering spot for relaxing and unwinding. A brand new open-air covered bar sits atop blue mosaic flooring with fans and cafe lights overhead. The outdoor bar features three 55-inch TVs and in the cooler months, the outdoor bar area is equipped with overhead heaters.

Adjacent to the covered area, stone landscaping gives the expansive space a backyard feel. Seven picnic tables sit under mulberry trees while hammered copper tiki-style gas torches line the space. Guests can opt to hang out on two white porch swings or Adirondack chairs surrounding a large 60 x 36-inch above-ground brick fire pit. Patrons can also enjoy a bumper pool table which will be situated on astroturf alongside the fire pit area.

Breathing Fresh Air into Classic Cocktails

General Manager Sarah Crossley (The Owl) and Assistant General Manager Levi Tyma (Estelle’s) created an approachable menu featuring a classic cocktail take on each spirit. Inspired by Mr. ZJ’s Podhale, the bar’s previous occupant, Central Park Bar’s signature cocktail will be The Wildflower with Polish Zubrowka Bison Grass Vodka, Singhani 63, St Germain, Dolin Dry Vermouth and lemon. Podhale translates into “under the mountains” and is Poland’s southernmost region.

Other cocktails on the menu include Merry Go Round Memories with Tanqueray, Orgeat syrup, Giffard Creme de Peche, Apologue Aronia, lemon and sugar, the Layer Weather with Rittenhouse Rye, Benedictine, Cynar, Pernod, and Peychaud’s Bitters, One Last Bonfire with Union Mezcal, Giffard Banane du Brésil, creme de cacao, Fee Brothers Aztec Chocolate Bitters, and Fee Brothers Cranberry Bitters, and more.

UK raises terror threat level following taxi explosionAssociated Presson November 15, 2021 at 5:26 pm

An armed police officer holds a breaching shotgun, used to blast the hinges off a door, at an address in Rutland Avenue in Sefton Park, after an explosion at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital in Liverpool, England, Monday, Nov. 15, 2021. British police arrested three men under terrorism laws Sunday after a car exploded outside the hospital, killing one man and injuring another. | AP

Prime Minister Boris Johnson condemned the “sickening attack” at Liverpool Women’s Hospital and told reporters that the British people “will never be cowed by terrorism.”

LONDON — British authorities raised the country’s threat level to its second-highest rung on Monday, after police said a blast in a taxi outside a Liverpool hospital that killed one man and injured another was caused by a homemade bomb.

Investigators said they were treating the explosion in Liverpool as a terrorist incident, but that the motive was unclear.

The Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre raised the U.K. threat level from substantial — meaning an attack is likely — to severe, meaning it is highly likely, following the U.K.’s second fatal incident in a month. Conservative lawmaker David Amess was stabbed to death in October in what police said was an act of terrorism.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson condemned the “sickening attack” at Liverpool Women’s Hospital and told reporters that the British people “will never be cowed by terrorism.”

“We will never give in to those who seek to divide us with senseless acts of violence,” he said.

A male passenger in a taxi was killed and the driver injured when a blast ripped through the vehicle as it pulled up outside the hospital on Sunday morning. Russ Jackson, the head of Counterterrorism Policing in northwest England, said the explosion was caused by “the ignition of an explosive device” that was brought into the vehicle by the passenger.

Three men in their 20s were arrested elsewhere in the city under the Terrorism Act on Sunday, and a fourth was detained on Monday. All are believed to be “associates” of the dead passenger, police said.

Suspicions about a motive for the explosion have been aroused by the timing — just before 11 a.m. on Remembrance Sunday, the moment people across Britain hold services in memory of those killed in wars.

Jackson said investigators had not found a link to remembrance events, “but it is a line of inquiry we are pursuing.”

“Although the motivation for this incident is yet to be understood, given all the circumstances, it has been declared a terrorist incident,” he said at a press briefing.

He said the passenger had been picked up by the cab a 10-minute drive away and asked to be taken to the hospital, where the explosion occurred. The driver, named by local media as David Perry, managed to escape from the car. He was treated in the hospital and released.

Police said officers had searched two addresses in the city linked to the passenger and found “significant items” at one of them,

Liverpool Mayor Joanne Anderson said the taxi driver locked the doors of his cab so the passenger couldn’t leave. Police did not confirm that account.

“The taxi driver, in his heroic efforts, has managed to divert what could have been an absolutely awful disaster at the hospital,” Anderson told the BBC.

The prime minister also said the driver appeared to have behaved “with incredible presence of mind and bravery.”

Nick Aldworth, a former senior terrorism investigator in Britain, said the taxi appeared to have sustained “a lot of fire damage with very little blast damage.”

He said “whatever was in that vehicle was either a low yield or didn’t work properly, or possibly an incendiary. So I think it’s very much open to debate at the moment about what has happened.”

Britain’s official terrorism threat level was lowered from “severe” to “substantial” in February. It has been at severe most of the time since 2014, briefly rising to “critical” amid a spate of violent attacks in 2017.

The Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre sets the threat level based on intelligence about international terrorism at home and overseas.

Britain has experienced attacks by both Islamic and far-right extremists over the years, including a May 2017 suicide bombing at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester that killed 22 people.

Amess was stabbed to death Oct. 15 while meeting with constituents, in what police said was an act of terrorism by a supporter of the Islamic State group. The slaying came five years after Labour Party lawmaker Jo Cox was shot and stabbed to death by a far-right extremist.
