Young people & big bucks: Youth put hope for future in deer season, sandhills all over, plus Stray CastDale Bowmanon November 24, 2021 at 1:07 pm

Garrett Glennon stands with his big 10-point buck, taken Friday on opening day of Illinois’ firearm deer season at Des Plaines State Fish and Wildlife Area. | Dale Bowman

For those who love deer hunting, a couple of stories/notes of youth bagging big bucks during Illinois’ opening days of firearm deer season; plus sandhills all over and the Stray Cast.

I could see the smile busting out on Garrett Glennon’s face Friday at Des Plaines State Fish and Wildlife Area, even in the dark evening.

I first thought he and his dad, Randy, were just loading their tree stands and cart into a pickup at closing time on opening day of Illinois’ firearm deer season.

Then I saw a big 10-point rack sticking out of a blue tarp on the cart.

Good God, you all. An unremarkable opener turned remarkable.

”It’s the only deer we saw all day,” Glennon, 19, said.

But this is not new for him.

”He’s taken bigger deer than I have,” his dad said.

Glennon, a Conant graduate attending Harper College, started deer hunting at 11. At 13, he took a 10-pointer. The mount of that one is in his room.

”I decided not to mount this one,” Glennon said. ”It won’t fit in my room.”

Instead, he will do something like a European mount.

On this buck, he made a good quartering shot at relatively close range. But the buck kept running on adrenaline in brush until it crashed to the ground.

Then came the hard work of bringing the deer — all 250 pounds of it — out at another parking lot than the one they had parked in.

”I’m starving,” Glennon said. ”That was a workout.”

”I’m so happy for him,” his father said. ”I was wanting it for him more than my own deer.”

Hunters standing around paying homage Friday to Garrett Glennon’s big 10-point buck at the check station at Des Plaines State Fish and Wildlife Area.

The deer was so big that to hoist it to the back cargo-carrier rack, Glennon handled the rack and head while his dad and I each grabbed a back leg.

The rack was so big that it would have dragged on the ground. I dug a bungee cord out of my trunk, then Glennon’s dad roped the buck and its rack safely up.

Back at the check station, where we turned in our parking marker and back patch, Glennon’s buck drew the attention of every hunter and staffer. We stood around in a half-moon, half admiring and half paying homage.

”It’s like a freaking cow,” a staffer said.

Erin Henne, 16, with her nine-point buck, second year in a row that she took big-buck honors in her hunting group in Edwards County.

Erin Henne continues to make memories. The 16-year-old bagged a nine-point buck in Edwards County. It was her second consecutive year with big-buck honors around her hunting group.

”All the men here never killed bucks like that,” messaged Gary Bloom, the great Chicago angler and hunter who hunts with the same group. ”Less points but bigger rack.”

Henne took a 12-pointer last year.

When the Illinois Department of Natural Resources releases the harvest report, I plan to post promptly at chicago.suntimes.com/outdoors.

Wild things

The big push of sandhill cranes around the area and the counts at Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area in Indiana were weeks behind.

That changed.

On Thursday, Tom Jurich emailed: ”They’re coming! Out briefly about 10:30 a.m. in Munster [Indiana] and heard, then saw, two groups of about 50 or so riding a strong tailwind from northwest to southeast toward Jasper-Pulaski. They were making great time!”

On Sunday, reports came on Illinois Birders Exchanging Thoughts (IBET). My favorite was from Leslie Borns, who posted: ”During a run on the lakefront path between 2:30 and 4 p.m., I witnessed continuous flocks of sandhills flying overhead. Some flew right over DuSable Lake Shore Drive and others were coming in off the lake, all headed south or southwest. I couldn’t hear their vocalizing over the traffic on LSD, but it was an awesome sight and one I will not forget.”

On Tuesday, the count at Jasper-Pulaski had jumped by 24,200 to 28,652.

Stray cast

Tracking the Bears game on your phone while sitting in a deer blind does nothing for either experience.

Tuesday morning, things started to get real interesting when it came to whether or not the Chicago Bears would hang onto head coach Matt Nagy through the rest of the season. In the midst of catastrophe, here are some reasons to give thanksMichael Sneedon November 24, 2021 at 11:30 am

One thing I’m thankful for: This display in the Country Shop in Winnetka’s windows. | Sun-Times file photo

Michael Sneed’s annual list, begun more than 30-years ago, comes as we are a nation in the grips of a pandemic and split politically.

Gosh.

Once again, it’s time for Sneed’s annual Thanksgiving gratitude list — begun … more than 30 years ago!

The list once lauded good deeds by good dudes, but eventually turned in a different direction: giving thanks for the many things we take for granted.

The world may be in the midst of a catastrophic rough go, our country splitting along political lines despite the election of a new president, our city reeling from the epidemic of gun violence and the COVID contagion.

And who would have figured the word “subpoena” has now become so common, spellcheck is no longer necessary.

So let us give thanks for family returning to the Thanksgiving table this week, for the wisdom to deal with the unexpected and gratitude for the things we take for granted.

Such as …

o Family.

o Forgiveness. Empathy.

o Mental health.

o Magical thinking.

o Listening.

o Reciting an entire poem out loud.

o Making a new friend.

o Trusting someone enough to share a secret.

o Confidence.

o A sweet dream.

o Sunrise anywhere.

o Birdsong, especially the meadowlark.

o Living in the present; finding joy in the past … and letting go of what wasn’t.

o Good knees (please).

o Daydreaming.

o Live music and live theater … among vaccinated crowds.

o The socialization of school … safely.

o Takeout; transportation; technology … used wisely.

o The freedom of a car; stops along the road.

o Separating fools from folly.

o Trees … and a giant cottonwood tree growing among the detritus near the intersection of Willow Road and the Edens Expressway.

o A brave heart; a kind heart.

o Fireflies; grasshoppers; the chirrup of crickets at night; bees; owls; frogs.

o A cherished children’s book: “Tubby the Tuba” … and what could be a lesson to our fractured citizenry when Tubby sings, “If I went away from me, how unhappy I would be.”

o “The Song of Wandering Aengus” by poet William Butler Yeats; the poems of Elizabeth Bishop and Mary Oliver.

o Trust.

o The comfort of animals. My pandemic pup pals Pip and Two-Two.

o Curiosity.

o A vodka martini.

o The memory of mom’s mincemeat pie.

o Dusk.

o Time off. Timeout.

o Newspapers, always.

o Truth. Candor. Tempered by understanding.

o Adoption.

o Breath.

o A smile on a policeman’s face … especially in a mask.

o A perfect sentence. A great first paragraph.

o Adjectives. Atonement.

o Quiet. Silence.

o Listening.

o Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

o A father’s legacy; my garden. The lovely month my mother was born and her namesake: June.

o Laughter. The hysterical kitchen scene in the film “Moonstruck.”

o Close friends. And just friends. And childhood friends, who knew what you were like at 13, keeping you humbled.

o The Missouri River.

o A prairie childhood in a town with a name listed nowhere else in the world: Mandan, North Dakota.

o The acidity of a fresh garden tomato; tree peonies.

o The wonderful photo of a long-gone Thanksgiving window taken late one night, which now highlights my column.

o Great neighbors.

o Sunflowers pointing up.

o Whistling in the dark; laughing until it hurts.

o Books you remember forever.

o Calling Chicago my home and my heart since 1965.

For all of this this, I give thanks … always.

Before the Sneed list ends, quotes from the past for reflection:

One is a poem from the English poet Chidiock Tichborne, who penned “Elegy” in 1586:

“My tale was heard, and yet it was not told,

My fruit is fallen, and yet my leaves are green,

My youth is spent, and yet I am not old,

I saw the world, and yet I was not seen:

My thread is cut, and yet it is not spun,

And now I live, and now my life is done.”

But, finally, apt words in a time of worldwide turmoil from the Trappist monk Thomas Merton, who faced despair in a powerful prayer … hoping God would never leave him to face the unfaceable as so many Americans have the past two years:

“My Lord God.

“I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. … I cannot know for certain where it will end. Therefore will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.”

Sneedlings …

Congrats to former Illinois attorney general and political heavyweight Neil Hartigan on his impending nuptials. … Thanksgiving birthdays: Former first daughters Barbara and Jenna Bush, 40; actor Ben Stein, 77; Christina Applegate, 50; actor John Larroquette, 74, and singer Amy Grant, 61.

Bears predictions: Week 12 vs LionsPatrick Finleyon November 24, 2021 at 11:00 am

The Sun-Times’ experts offer their picks for the Thanksgiving game in Detroit:

The Sun-Times’ experts offer their picks for the Thanksgiving game in Detroit:

Rick Morrissey

Bears 17-13

The brave, resilient, still-united Bears snap their five-game losing streak against a pesky Lions team that is much better than its 0-9-1 record indicates! Afterward, coach Matt Nagy rightly points to the character and culture in the locker room that produced such a glorious outcome! Is that positive enough for you? Good. Enjoy the turkey. Season: 8-2.

Rick Telander

Bears 12-11

A combined 19 straight games of non-winning here? Genius scheduling! A great way help bloated Americans eat less on Thanksgiving: Give `em football nausea! Somebody has to win, you say? Not necessarily, friends. The Lions already have one tie this year. Season: 7-3.

Patrick Finley

Bears 23-20 (OT)

This will be closer than most Bears fans want to admit. Over the last month, the Lions have lost to the Rams by nine (the Bears lost to them by 20), tied the Steelers (the Bears lost by two) and lost to the Browns by three (the Bears lost by 20). Season: 8-2.

Jason Lieser

Bears 26-17

The winless Lions have played two consecutive close games against decent opponents, so there’s some concern. But they’ve (almost) always been a reliable friend to the Bears. They’re the cure to the losing streak. Season: 8-2.

Mark Potash

Lions 20-17

The Bears are desperate for a victory to pull out of this free fall. And this seems like the spot to do it. But the Bears seem resigned to their fate, and that of their coach, at this point. Season: 8-2.
