The powerful storm system killed at least one person at an Amazon facility in downstate Edwardsville.

A monstrous tornado killed dozens of people in Kentucky and the toll was climbing Saturday after severe weather ripped through at least five states including southern Illinois, leaving widespread devastation.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said upwards of 70 may have died when a twister touched down for more than 200 miles in his state, but the number of deaths could exceed 100 across 10 or more counties.

“This has been the most devastating tornado event in our state’s history,” Beshear said at a news conference.

The storms that started Friday night hit a candle factory in Kentucky, an Amazon facility in Illinois and a nursing home in Arkansas. Officials had confirmed 29 deaths, including 22 in three Kentucky counties. Beshear said about 110 people were in the Mayfield factory when the tornado roared through.

Debris from destroyed buildings and shredded trees covered the ground in Mayfield, a city of about 10,000 in western Kentucky. Twisted metal sheeting, downed power lines and wrecked vehicles lined the streets of what was barely recognizable as a town.

The missing at the candle factory included Denise Johnson Williams, a 50-year-old mother of four whose family members kept vigil at the site Saturday.

“It’s Christmastime and she works at a place that’s making candles for gifts,” her brother, Darryl Williams, said. “To give up the gift of life to make a gift. We haven’t heard anything, and I’m not presuming anything. But I’m expecting for the worst.”

He said Johnson Williams called her husband overnight to report the weather was getting bad, the last time anyone heard from her.

Kyanna Parsons-Perez, an employee at the factory, was trapped under 5 feet of debris for at least two hours until rescuers managed to free her.

In an interview with NBC’s “Today,” she said it was the “absolutely the most terrifying” event she had ever experienced. “I did not think I was going to make it at all.”

Just before the tornado struck, the building’s lights flickered. She felt a gust of wind, her ears started “popping” and then, “Boom. Everything came down on us.” People started screaming, and she heard Hispanic workers praying in Spanish.

Among those who helped rescue the trapped workers were inmates from the nearby Graves County Jail, she said.

“They could have used that moment to try to run away or anything, but they did not. They were there, helping us,” she said.

Kentucky State Trooper Sarah Burgess said rescue crews were using heavy equipment to move rubble at the candle factory. Coroners were called to the scene and bodies were recovered, but she didn’t know how many. She said it could take a day and potentially longer to remove all of the rubble.

Rescue efforts were complicated because Mayfield’s main fire station and emergency services hub were also hit by the tornado, said Jeremy Creason, the city’s fire chief and EMS director.

“We have been working tirelessly through the night,” he said. “We had to at times crawl over casualties to get to live victims to get them out.”

President Joe Biden tweeted Saturday that he was briefed on the situation and pledged the affected states would “have what they need as the search for survivors and damage assessments continue.”

At least one person died at an Amazon facility in Edwardsville, Illinois, Police Chief Mike Fillback told reporters Saturday morning. The roof of the building was ripped off and a wall about the length of a football field collapsed.

Two people at the facility were taken to hospitals in St. Louis, about 25 miles away, Fillback said. The chief said he did not know their medical conditions. About 30 people who were in the building were taken to the police station for evaluation.

“My prayers are with the people of Edwardsville tonight, and I’ve reached out to the mayor to provide any needed state resources,” Gov. J.B. Pritzker tweeted late Friday, adding that state police and other staff “are both coordinating closely with local officials and I will continue to monitor the situation.”

Pritzker was scheduled to deliver an update from Edwardsville Saturday evening.

Earlier in the day, rescue crews were still sorting through the rubble. Fillback said the process could take several more hours. Cranes and backhoes were brought in to help move debris.

“This is a devastating tragedy for our Amazon family and our focus is on supporting our employees and partners,” Amazon spokesperson Richard Rocha said in a written statement.

Workers at a National Weather Service office had to take shelter as a tornado passed near their office in Weldon Spring, Missouri, about 30 miles west of St. Louis. One person died and two others were injured in building collapses near the towns of Defiance and New Melle, both just a few miles from the weather service office.

“This was an incredible storm that lasted a long time and covered a lot of territory,” said Larry Vannozzi, meteorologist in charge of the National Weather Service office covering the Nashville area.

Meteorologists haven’t determined whether the storm spawned a single tornado or multiple tornadoes, he said.

In Arkansas, a tornado struck a nursing home in Monette, killing one and trapping 20 people inside as the building collapsed, Craighead County Judge Marvin Day told The Associated Press. Five people had serious injuries, he said.

Another person died when the storm hit a Dollar General store in nearby Leachville, Gov. Asa Hutchinson said.

“Probably the most remarkable thing is that there’s not a greater loss of life,” Hutchinson said after touring the wreckage of the nursing home. “It is catastrophic. It’s a total destruction.”

Three storm-related deaths were confirmed in northwestern Tennessee, said Dean Flener, spokesman for the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency.

The storms swept through Bowling Green, Kentucky, near the Tennessee border, tearing roofs off homes and flinging debris into roadways. Western Kentucky University’s president said on Twitter that one of its student who lived off-campus was killed. The school called off commencement ceremonies that were planned for Saturday because the campus was without power.

Hicks sprained his ankle late in the Bears’ Nov. 8 loss to the Steelers.

The Bears ruled out defensive tackle Akiem Hicks on Saturday, almost 24 hours after the emotional leader of the defense said the plan was for him to play Sunday night against the Packers.

Hicks sprained his ankle late in the Bears’ Nov. 8 loss to the Steelers. He had not practiced since the injury before being limited on Wednesday. He had the same designation Thursday and was a full participant in Friday’s light practice. He was ruled questionable for the rivalry game on Friday.

It wasn’t until last week that the swelling in Hicks’ ankle reduced enough for him to run.

Hicks rushed back from a groin injury to face the Packers earlier this season. Two years ago, he returned from a dislocated elbow to play the Packers.

“Beating the guy across town — you like to have bragging right,” he said Friday. “You like to be able to talk trash. That’s what we play sports for, to compete and have fun.”

In the final year of his contract, Hicks is headed for free agency and will likely sign elsewhere this off-season.

The Bears also ruled out safety Teez Tabor with an illness and promoted rookie outside linebacker Charles Snowden from the practice squad.

Keep up with the action from all six games at Mount Carmel on Saturday.

North Lawndale 60, Lincoln-Way East 57: The Phoenix held off Lincoln-Way East courtesy of some late-game heroics from juniors Damarion Wyatt and Aidon Parker.

Wyatt’s driving layup with 13 seconds to play put North Lawndale ahead 58-57. Parker grabbed a key rebound off a missed free throw on the next possession, was fouled and made two free throws to seal the win.

Junior Ronald Chambers led the Phoenix (5-4) with 22 points and Parker finished with 11.

Tylon Tolliver led the Griffins (1-7) with 19 points and George Bellevue added 14 points and eight rebounds.

Oak Forest 80, Lane 60: There is a universal appreciation for Robbie Avila’s game that is uncommon. Opposing coaches, referees and fans marvel at the way Oak Forest’s 6-8 senior plays basketball.

His mind always appears to be a few steps ahead of everyone else on the court. And he has the skills to pull off his vision.

“It’s amazing how he runs our team,” Bengals coach Matt Manzke said. “He brings the whole program to another level. There’s been multiple times this year where he’s suggested that we need to do something different on the court. And we do it and it’s the right thing to do.”

Avila, an Indiana State recruit, had 30 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and four steals in Oak Forest’s win against Lane on Saturday.

Riverside-Brookfield 78, Romeoville 50: The Bulldogs opened the third quarter with a 14-4 run and dominated the second half.

John Paul Hanley scored 26 and Joevonn McCottry added 18. Meyoh Swansey led Romeoville with 14 points.

The Bulldogs are now 8-1 and the only loss was a close game to Curie. The Spartans fall to 5-3.

Avila, an Indiana State recruit, had 30 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and four steals in Oak Forest’s 80-60 win against Lane on Saturday in the Team Rose Classic at Mount Carmel.

That’s a typical stat line for Avila.

“I could tell that he knew all of our sets,” Lane coach Nick LoGalbo said. “He’s just a really impressive kid.”

Avila has a lot of basketball ahead of him. But don’t be surprised to see him coaching some day.

“I’ve picked up a thing or two,” Avila said. “I’ve been playing basketball forever. I enjoy coaching and helping teammates out so it might be something I think about in the future.”

Oak Forest (9-0) is off to an impressive start this season. Avila was expected to be one of the state’s best players but the team around him is much better than anticipated.

“Over the summer we struggled a little bit, everybody knows that,” Avila said. “We got in there in the fall as a team and we’ve been working hard and it shows. We are really committed to keeping people out of the paint and getting on the ball [defensively] on the catch and not allowing any easy shots.”

The Bengals were excellent defensively against Lane (8-2) and only turned the ball over six times.

“We’ve got some athletes and some smart kids that understand what they’re supposed to do and where they are supposed to be,” Manzke said. “So when you have smart guys in the right spot and a couple guys that can create a little bit of chaos you have something.”

Kirsten Stickney/For the Sun-Times
Oak Forest’s Fred Robinson IV (5) takes the ball to the basket past Lane.

Guard Fred Robinson has taken his game to another level this season. The Oak Forest senior had 28 points and eight rebounds. He’s a strong guard that excels at getting to the rim.

“Fred is the real deal,” Manzke said. “He’s been consistently terrific so far this season.”

Senior Taurean Mickens added 12 points for the Bengals and Drew Pagnusat, a three-year starter, had five points and four rebounds for Oak Forest.

“Everybody knows their niche on the team and they have bought into it,” Manzke said. “That’s always the key to being successful.”

Robinson admitted he is a little surprised that his team is unbeaten this far into the season.

“We’ve come a long way,” Robinson, a William Woods recruit, said. “We came together. It’s all about energy. We all share the ball and if we keep playing as a team it will all be good.”

Joseph Perona scored 12 off the bench for Lane and Stephen Goonan added 12 points.

3 Tips For Choosing The Right Sports Team TentNed Fon December 11, 2021 at 11:00 am

Do you know all that goes into choosing the right sports tent for your team? If not, don’t stress—this article will guide you through its process. A tent can be handy at any athletic event. Tents give shade and temporary cover to spectators and competitors, making watching a racing car or a golf tournament more convenient.

It is essential to pay close attention to every element of the occasion when organizing a sporting event. So, what exactly should you look for in a canopy tent? Before you settle on one, here are some tips for choosing the right sports team tent:

Determine The Size You Need

To start, consider the scope of your activity to determine the size and number of tents needed. This is one of the essential parts of the process. Nothing is worse than ordering your sports tent, which is ideal in every manner, only to discover that it is not tailored to your needs because it is too small. A custom 10×10 canopy is recommended for any standard event. However, more extensive and smaller sizes are also available. So, here’s what you’ll need to consider when deciding on the size of your tent:

Number Of Attendees – Even if you don’t know the precise number of people, or if you’re purchasing a tent that will be used for any occasion, it’s best to round up. It’s better to have an overly large tent than to squeeze guests into a small tent.
Seating Arrangement – The seating layout for your event is the second most crucial element in deciding which tent size you’ll need once you’ve determined how many people you’ll need to accommodate in your tent. Ensure the seats will fit in your tent when spaced accordingly.
Weather – On a hot or humid day, people will prefer to have more space to themselves for air to move freely. If you’re arranging an outdoor event in a warm or tropical area, take note that you may need more room for each of your guests so that your tent doesn’t become confining.

Remember to consider the canopy’s height as well. If you have taller guests, ensure they don’t hit their heads on the way in and out. Make sure your tent is practical and comfortable for your team.

Pick Out The Type Of Tent

Once you’ve determined the size, you’ll have an idea of what type of tent suits your sports team. Set-up time, appearance, and functionality vary by tent model, so don’t ignore this step and think any type of tent will suffice. Here are some of the most common tent styles, as well as the places and events where they are most appropriate:

Pole tents – One of the most common tents used, they can be created in almost any size and possess the traditional canopy style that many clients seek in a tent. As the name implies, the primary foundation for this tent style is a center pole. These tents function well and look fantastic in the grass for any outdoor event. These tents, however, must be anchored into the ground, making them unsuitable for use indoors, concrete, and asphalt.
Pop-Up Tents – Pop-up tents are smaller tents that are ideal for starters because of their easy set-up, tear-down, and maintenance. Pop-up canopy tents, as the name indicates, have a basic frame that can be set up and taken down by one person and transported to multiple areas if needed. Pop-up tents are ideally suited for smaller gatherings, casual outdoor events, or medic stations since they are usually smaller and have a simple frame.
Frame Tents – The frame tent is perhaps the most practical sports tent available. Like a pole tent, a frame tent can be adjusted to accommodate any number of people and is ideal for large gatherings. Unlike a pole tent, frame tents do not need to be anchored into the ground and do not have a central pole. Frame tents are ideal for most occasions, especially if you require a large tent for indoor use.

Select The Best Tent Fabric

Select the best fabric suited for your tent after determining the size and picking a style. Whatever tent you choose, ensure that the material it’s made of is good quality and can withstand any weather, or you’ll end up with a tent that doesn’t serve what it’s designed to do: protect your team. One of the following fabric types is recommended:

Coated Vinyl – Coated vinyl is a protective film coated with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) that weatherizes the tent and maintains it in good condition. This is the finest material you can have for your tent if you anticipate needing one that can resist extreme weather conditions or has to be up and robust for an extended amount of time.
Laminated Vinyl – Unlike coated vinyl, the tent material is ‘laminated’ between two protective layers. This is very protective, as it is waterproof, fire-resistant, and rustproof. It’s a good choice because laminated vinyl provides a high degree of protection at a lower cost.

Conclusion

With so many variations to choose from, finding the right tent for your team might be overwhelming, but with this article, you’ll learn the essential factors in selecting the tent for your sports team. Once you’ve found the right tent for your needs, you’ll be able to relax and create unforgettable memories with your team.

Bellamy, who played for the Bears from 2014-18, admitted being part of a scheme to defraud the government of pandemic relief funds — illegally obtaining a $1.2 million PPP loan for personal use.

Former Bears wide receiver Josh Bellamy was sentenced Friday to three years and one month in prison for his part in a fraud scheme in which he illegally acquired $1.2 million in pandemic relief funds for personal use.

Bellamy, 32, of St. Petersburg, Fla., pleaded guilty on June 9 in the Southern District of Florida to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. According to court documents, Bellamy used falsified documents to receive a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan of $1,246,565 for his company, Drip Entertainment LLC.

Bellamy, who played for the Bears from 2014-18, admitted to using the money on personal items, including jewelry and more than $62,000 on a stay at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. He also admitted, according to court documents, paying $311,000 to an alleged co-conspirator as a kickback for his assistance in the scheme.

Bellamy was sentenced to 37 months in prison. He also must serve three years of supervised release and pay the full amount of the loan in restitution and forfeiture.

Bellamy, an undrafted free agent out of Louisville in 2012, played eight seasons in the NFL with the Chiefs (2012), Redskins (2013), Bears (2014-18) and Jets (2019). He played 67 of his 82 games and made all 14 of his NFL starts with the Bears, under coaches Marc Trestman, John Fox and Matt Nagy.

His best season was 2017, when he started seven games in Fox’s final season and had 24 receptions for 376 yards (15.7 avg.) and one touchdown. He also had a 34-yard catch against the Eagles in the wild-card game in the 2018-19 postseason.

Pritzker was scheduled to deliver an update from Edwardsville Saturday night.

A tornado struck the Monette Manor nursing home in Arkansas on Friday night, killing one and trapping 20 people inside as the building collapsed, Craighead County Judge Marvin Day told The Associated Press.

Five people had serious injuries, and a few others had minor ones, he said.

Three storm-related deaths were confirmed in Tennessee, said Dean Flener, spokesman for the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency. Two of the deaths occurred in Lake County, and the third was in Obion County — both in the northwestern corner of the state.

The storms swept through Bowling Green, Kentucky, near the Tennessee border, tearing roofs off homes and flinging debris into roadways. A GM Corvette Assembly Plant and the nearby Corvette Museum sustained light damage. A semitrailer was overturned and pushed against a building just across the street.

Western Kentucky University’s president said on Twitter that one of its students who lived off-campus was killed. The school called off commencement ceremonies that were planned for Saturday because the campus was without power.

Ronnie Ward, a Bowling Green police spokesman, said in a telephone interview that rescue efforts were hampered by debris strewn across roads. Ward said numerous apartment complexes in Bowling Green had major structural damage, and some factories had collapsed during the storms.

“Right now we’re focusing on the citizens, trying to get to everybody that needs us,” Ward said.

The powerful storm system killed at least one person at an Amazon facility in downstate Edwardsville.

At least 70 people were feared dead in Kentucky after tornadoes and severe weather tore through multiple states — including southern Illinois — causing catastrophic damage.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said at a news conference Saturday that the death toll may exceed 100.

“This has been the most devastating tornado event in our state’s history,” Beshear said, adding that experts think one massive tornado touched down for a staggering 227 miles.

The storms hit a candle factory in Kentucky, an Amazon facility in Illinois and a nursing home in Arkansas. Beshear said about 110 people were in the Mayfield factory when the tornado hit.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Sarah Burgess said search and rescue teams were going through the rubble Saturday but didn’t yet have a number for how many have died.

“We just can’t confirm a number right now because we are still out there working, and we have so many agencies involved in helping us,” Burgess said.

She said rescue crews were using heavy equipment to move rubble at the candle factory in western Kentucky. Coroners were called to the scene and bodies were recovered, but she didn’t know how many. She said it could take a day and potentially longer to remove all of the rubble.

President Joe Biden tweeted Saturday that he was briefed on the situation and pledged the affected states would “have what they need as the search for survivors and damage assessments continue.”

Kyana Parsons-Perez, an employee at the factory, was trapped under 5 feet of debris for at least two hours until rescuers managed to free her.

In an interview with “TODAY,” she said it was the “absolutely the most terrifying” event she had ever experienced.

Elsewhere in Graves County, the landscape was a scene of devastation with uprooted trees, downed utility poles, a store destroyed and homes severely damaged.

At least one person died at an Amazon facility in Edwardsville, Illinois, Police Chief Mike Fillback told reporters Saturday morning. The roof of the building was ripped off and a wall about the length of a football field collapsed.

Two people at the facility were taken by helicopter to hospitals in St. Louis, Fillback said. The chief said he did not know their medical conditions. Edwardsville is about 25 miles east of St. Louis.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether the damage was caused by straight-line storms or a tornado, but the National Weather Service office near St. Louis reported “radar-confirmed tornadoes” in the Edwardsville area around the time of the collapse.

About 30 people who were in the building were taken by bus to the police station in nearby Pontoon Beach for evaluation.

Early Saturday, rescue crews were still sorting through the rubble. Fillback said the process could take several more hours. Cranes and backhoes were brought in to help move debris.

“The safety and well-being of our employees and partners is our top priority right now,” Amazon spokesperson Richard Rocha said in a written statement Friday night. “We’re assessing the situation and will share additional information when it’s available.”

Caboni, the school’s president, offered condolences and asked all students to check in with loved ones. He said the school’s main structures were mostly spared of major damage and that workers were trying to restore power, campus networks and phone lines.

The school called off commencement ceremonies that were planned for Saturday because the campus was without power.

Ronnie Ward, a Bowling Green police spokesman, said in a telephone interview that rescue efforts in Bowling Green and elsewhere were hampered by debris strewn across roads.
