Bloom is back and in the top ten, and two teams make their season debuts in the rankings.

This was a tough week with the rankings. I’ve seen most of the teams that are in the Super 25 play now and it hasn’t always been very instructive.

What do you do when a ranked team loses by 30 at home? New Trier survives this week despite that loss.

I don’t like penalizing teams for losing to good opponents. But it gets tricky when a team has lost to pretty much all of its good opponents. Basically, it is really early and every team is still figuring themselves out. I would bet we aren’t going to see too much consistency until after the holiday tournaments, if at all.

Hyde Park, Batavia and Yorkville Christian all dropped out this week. Batavia lost two games and Hyde Park lost to Yorkville Christian by 16 points.

Bloom is back in the rankings and jumps into the top ten. The Blazing Trojans beat Thornton in Harvey and then took down Evanston a night later at the Team Rose Classic.

Oak Forest and Leo join for the first time this season. I was able to see both teams this weekend and was impressed. The Bengals are a really solid group with two excellent players, Robbie Avila and Fred Robinson. It will be interesting to see how they hold up against some better competition.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Bears return man Jakeem Grant, who’s been pressed into action as a receiver the past few weeks, took a shovel pass from Justin Fields, running right to left, and ran 46 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter Sunday night at Lambeau FIeld.

Per NFL NextGen Stats, he ran 20.86 miles per hour at his fastest point during the touchdown. That’s the fastest any Bears player has run on a play from scrimmage this season.

Jakeem Grant reached a top speed of 20.86 mph on his 46-yard catch-and-run touchdown, the fastest speed reached by a Bears ball-carrier on a play from scrimmage this season.

That wasn’t even the most remarkable Grant moment of the half, though. With 1:54 to play, he returned a punt 97 yards, catching the ball at the 3, probing right and then cutting back left and sprinting up the sideline. It was the first punt return for a touchdown by any player in the NFL all season.

KD one-ups Curry, pours in NBA season-best 51on December 13, 2021 at 3:44 am

In his most explosive game with the Brooklyn Nets, Kevin Durant scored the most points in a game in the NBA this season, going off for 51 points in a 116-104 win over the Detroit Pistons on Sunday at Little Caesars Arena.

With James Harden resting for the first time this season, Durant joined Golden State’s Stephen Curry as the only players with a 50-point game this season.

Durant made 16 of 31 shots from the field, including five 3-pointers, and had 9 assists, 7 rebounds and 2 blocked shots to overwhelm the Pistons, who lost for the 12th straight time.

“Kevin was incredible,” Nets coach Steve Nash said. “Not an easy night. They played extremely hard. Tons of energy. We were playing different lineups. Think there were different guys out there at different times trying to find the spacing and spots and where to be, and so there were some challenges there for us. For him to be able to score 51 and 9 assists, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks and steal. Unbelievable.”

1 Related

With the Nets using their ninth starting lineup this season with Harden, Paul Millsap (personal reasons), Joe Harris (left ankle surgery) and Kyrie Irving (not with team) out, Durant has been the one constant force for Brooklyn this season.

In 25 games this season, Durant is leading the NBA in scoring at 29.4 points per game. Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo is second at 27.3 points per game. Curry, who scored 50 points this season against Atlanta on Nov. 8, is third in scoring at 27.1 points per game. Durant and Curry are two of the favorites to win league MVP and the scoring title this season.

For Durant, this was the eighth time in his career that he has scored 50 points but first with the Nets.

Durant said he did not feel added responsibility to score with Harden resting.

“I feel like we got enough scoring,” Durant said. “I feel like defensively we come out and stick to the game plan, play physical, then the offense will take care of itself. We went cold there for a second, so I figured that I should be more aggressive.”

He made 7 of 8 shots and scored 16 points in the third quarter, including the first 13 points for the Nets in the quarter.

“It was very special,” Nets point guard Patty Mills said. “Obviously, special for him, but I think it’s special for everyone that was able to take part in that and be up close and personal to what happened tonight.”

Bears WR Jakeem Grant goes 97 yards for first punt return touchdown in NFL this seasonon December 13, 2021 at 3:19 am

Green Bay, Wis. — Jakeem Grant loves the left sideline at Lambeau Field.

About eight minutes after the Chicago Bears receiver scored Chicago’s first touchdown off a jet sweep he took 46 yards down the Green Bay Packers‘ sideline into the end zone, Grant returned a punt 97 yards for a touchdown after the two minute warning in the first half, the longest punt return touchdown in Bears’ history.

It took 14 weeks into the season for the NFL to see its first punt returned for a touchdown. Grant caught the ball inside the 5-yard line, started to his right, felt the Packers closing in on him and cut back to his left to race down the sideline into the end zone.

Grant now has now returned four punts for touchdowns throughout his career. The play gave Chicago a 24-14 lead.

Two games, two pick-sixes.

For the second straight game at Lambeau Field, Green Bay Packers cornerback Rasul Douglas returned an interception for a touchdown. He beat Darnell Mooney to the ball on the left sideline, picked off Justin Fields‘ pass that was thrown slightly too far inside and returned it 55-yards for a touchdown to give the Packers a 14-10 second-quarter lead.

In the Packers last game before the bye, Douglas picked off Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford and returned it 33 yards for a touchdown.

This is the first time the Packers have multiple pick-sixes in a season since 2015, and Douglas has them both.

Douglas is the same player who basically won the Oct. 28 game at the Arizona Cardinals with a walk-off interception in the end zone just weeks after the Packers plucked him off the Cardinals practice squad.

Chicago Bears running back Jakeem Grant cranked up his afterburners to give the Bears their first touchdown of the night against the Green Bay Packers.

The play will go down as a 46-yard passing touchdown by Justin Fields, but it was actually a well-executed jet sweep Grant pulled off on second-and-4 from near midfield on Chicago’s third offensive drive.

The Bears sent five lead blockers to the left of the line of scrimmage to create openings for Grant to run through, in which he reached a maximum speed of 20.86 miles per hour, according to NFL Next Gen Stats.

Grant tip-toed down the sideline once he reached the end zone and was narrowly able to stay in bounds to score. The touchdown gave Chicago a 10-0 lead over the Packers with 11:17 to play in the second quarter.

The play is the longest reception of Grant’s career. He gained 50 yards after the catch on the play, tied for his most yards after the catch in a game in his career, according to ESPN Stats and Information.

Chikasi Ofoma’s name has been floating around in Chicago high school basketball circles for several years.

Chikasi Ofoma’s name has been floating around in Chicago high school basketball circles for several years.

He was home-schooled for most of high school but still popped up on recruiting rankings of players in the Class of 2023. He was ready to attend a high school and play basketball last season, but COVID put those plans on hold.

So there was some anticipation surrounding Ofoma this season. The 6-7 junior has made an immediate impact for Curie. He posted 22 points and 10 rebounds earlier this week against Brooks and 15 points and 10 rebounds against Fenger on Dec 3.

“People have the wrong opinion about me because they haven’t really seen me play,” Ofoma said. “So it is fun this year getting to show everyone what I can do instead of listening to what other people have to say about me.”

Sunday was Ofoma’s debut at a major local shootout. He formed a productive, dominant post duo with 6-5 junior Jeremy Harrington in the Condors’ 64-51 win against Leo in the Team Rose Classic at Mount Carmel.

“It’s exciting seeing all the crowds and how the runs go back and forth,” Ofoma said. “You just have to stay focused and listen to your coach.”

Ofoma finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Harrington had 18 points and 12 rebounds.

“We’re both versatile so we just listen to whatever the coach’s game plan is,” Ofoma said. “Today they had smaller guys so we knew we to play like posts in this game.”

Leo (3-1) started well. The Lions played fast, hard and smart and led 33-30 at halftime. They ran into a bit of a brick wall in the third quarter.

“We came out with no energy,” Leo coach Jamal Thompson said. “They made their free throws and we missed ours. That’s how the cookie crumbles sometimes. But this was a good learning experience for us.”

Senior Cameron Cleveland led Leo with 15 points and seven rebounds, junior Jakeem Cole scored 10 points and Austin Ford added eight points and 10 rebounds.

Curie (9-0) opened the third quarter with an 11-0 run and never surrendered that lead.

“We only have one senior and he never played that much,” Condors coach Mike Oliver said. “We are still trying to find our identity. When they play the Curie way we are good. But they don’t have enough talent to play as individuals, so when they try that we look bad. That’s what happened in the first half.”

Oliver had high hopes that his post duo would be effective this season.

“They both played on Team Rose over the summer and they worked hard,” Oliver said. “I knew they had a chance. They are finding their way now.”

Senior Phoenix Bullock added 13 points and four rebounds for Curie, who picked up the top seed at the prestigious Pontiac Holiday Tournament on Sunday. The Condors will face Bloomington in the first round on Dec. 28.

“We don’t rebuild, we just reload through our lower levels,” Oliver said. “These guys understand our system now. But everyone is going to be out for them now so they had better come out and play hard.”

Rep. Marie Newman, in a Democratic primary with Rep. Sean Casten, faces political damage from ethics probeLynn Sweeton December 13, 2021 at 1:22 am

Iymen Hamman Chehade, at the center of the controversy over Rep. Marie Newman offering him a job, is announcing this week a run for Congress from the 3rd District.

WASHINGTON — Looming over Rep. Marie Newman’s 2022 Democratic primary campaign against Rep. Sean Casten in the new 6th Congressional District is a renewed spotlight on a contract she signed in 2018 promising a government job to Iymen Hamman Chehade — a successful inducement, he said in court filings, for him not running against her in 2020.

Newman, 57, from La Grange, faces political damage as the employment agreement with Chehade is now the subject of a potential House Ethics Committee probe.

On Friday, the ethics panel said it will decide by Jan. 24 if it will pursue the case.

Newman campaign manager Ben Hardin told the Chicago Sun-Times on Sunday, “I believe that information will be made public on January 24th and that it will be definitively clear that there was no ethical wrongdoing.”

Complicating matters politically for Newman is Chehade’s own June 2022 primary bid for Congress and a series of very large salary payments Newman’s campaign fund has been making to him since July 1.

Iymen Hamman Chehade

The disbursements started two days after a June 29 settlement — the terms were never made public — was reached in his breach of contract case that ended up in federal court.

Chehade, 47, a Palestinian-American, told the Sun-Times he is officially launching a primary bid this week in the new 3rd Congressional District, anchored on Chicago’s Northwest Side and sweeping in northwestern suburban turf.

He becomes the third contender in a district Democratic mapmakers drew in the wake of the 2020 census intended to yield a Hispanic member of Congress.

Chehade, the son of Palestinian immigrants, currently teaches at the Art Institute and Columbia College. His courses focus on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

He is also the founder of the Uprising Theater, 2905 N. Milwaukee Ave., a nonprofit dedicated to, according to its mission statement, “working to give voice to people of Palestine and others who are marginalized.”

The resume Chehade provided to the Sun-Times made no mention of being employed by the Newman campaign.

Between July 1 and Sept. 28, according to the latest Federal Election Commission report, Chehade was paid $29,500, making him the highest paid staffer in the third quarter — more than double what two other Newman campaign staffers were paid during the same period.

Chehade told the Sun-Times his job with Newman is continuing through next year, even as he is running for his own congressional seat.

Chehade said he is the “Director of Foreign Policy and Research” for the Newman campaign, which the campaign confirmed Sunday.

The Sun-Times asked the Newman campaign to provide examples of Chehade’s work product and was sent two briefing papers: 12 pages of policy recommendations on the Palestinian-Israeli crisis and 9 pages on Kashmir.

Chehade earned an undergraduate degree in history and a master’s in history and education from the University of Illinois Chicago.

THE TIMELINE: BREAKING THIS DOWN

2018: On March 20, Newman narrowly loses a Democratic primary to Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Ill., 51.13% to 48.87%. Winning the primary in the Democratic district is tantamount to clinching the seat in the November general election.

According to Chehade’s lawsuit, in March, after Newman was defeated, he started exploring a 2020 3rd District run.

Chehade lives near O’Hare Airport on Chicago’s Northwest Side. Candidates do not have to live in districts they want to represent. The current 3rd District takes in parts of the South Side and southwest suburbs.

The largest Palestinian community in the U.S. is clustered in and around the current 3rd District.

On Dec. 26 — almost two years before the 2020 election — Newman and Chehade signed an employment agreement, an effort, his lawsuit said, “to induce Chehade not to run against her in the primary.”

The “inducement” worked, Chehade admitted. “Chehade accepted the offer and did not run against Newman in the primary.”

The employment agreement, filed with the lawsuit, stated if Newman won, Chehade would be her chief foreign policy adviser as well as either the district or legislative director. Chehade would be one of Newman’s highest paid staffers — a salary between $135,000 to $140,000 a year.

The contract would automatically renew and continue as long as Newman was in the House, a very unusual provision.

2019: On June 11, Newman tells Chehade she won’t give him a House job, the lawsuit states.

2020: In the March 17 Democratic primary, Newman beats Lipinski, 47.26% to 44.72% Hoping to leverage the growing Palestinian population in the district, Rush Darwish, a Palestinian-American, runs in the primary and gets 5.73% of the vote.

Newman is elected to the House on Nov. 3.

2021: Newman is sworn-in on Jan. 3.

Chehade sues her for breach of contract on Jan. 19. That Newman signed the contract is not disputed by her lawyers.

On May 26, a conservative watchdog group, the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust, files a complaint with the Office of Congressional Ethics, alleging an “apparent violation of federal law and ethics rules.”

The OCE investigates and on Oct. 25 sends its findings to the Ethics panel.

On Dec. 2, Chehade registers with the Federal Election Commission to create his congressional campaign committee, “IM IN WITH IYMEN.”

On Friday, Dec. 10, the Ethics Committee said its next move will be announced by Jan. 24.

Bears’ inactives: WR Allen Robinson returns vs. Packers after 3-game absenceJason Lieseron December 12, 2021 at 11:50 pm

The Bears also scratched backup quarterback Andy Dalton with a non-throwing hand injury, leaving Nick Foles as the backup to Justin Fields.

The Bears are getting top wide receiver Allen Robinson back against the Packers tonight, and he’ll try to salvage his season over the final five games.

Robinson, who was out the last three games with a hamstring injury, has just 30 catches for 339 yards and a touchdown this season. He topped 1,100 yards each of the last two seasons.

Quarterback Justin Fields also is returning from an injury after missing two games with cracked ribs and will be backed up by third-stringer Nick Foles. The Bears ruled out No. 2 quarterback Andy Dalton with an injured non-throwing hand.

The Bears traded a fourth-round pick for Foles in 2020 and signed him to a three-year, $24 million contract, but he has had a rocky run with them.

He lost the preseason quarterback competition to Mitch Trubisky last season, then replaced him in Week 3, then was benched late in the season. He has been active occasionally, but has not played a snap this season.

Here are the Bears’ inactives:
