Los Angeles Lakers head coach Frank Vogel has entered the NBA’s health and safety protocols, the team announced Sunday morning.

David Fizdale will coach the team for Sunday night’s game in Chicago, which will be the Bulls‘ first since a COVID-19 outbreak on the team led to the postponement of their last two games.

In addition to Vogel, Lakers swingman Kent Bazemore has also entered the protocols. Bazemore joins teammates Avery Bradley, Talen Horton-Tucker, Dwight Howard, Malik Monk, Kendrick Nunn and Austin Reaves in the league’s health and safety protocols.

The Lakers are also without Anthony Davis, who will miss about four weeks with an MCL sprain in his left knee.

Kurtis Gabriel will get ‘every opportunity’ to earn steady role with Blackhawks

The Blackhawks acquired Kurtis Gabriel on Dec. 9 to give the journeyman grinder a steady NHL opportunity.

For a variety of reasons, that hasn’t happened.

Gabriel, 28, was a healthy scratch Dec. 11 against the Maple Leafs, his former team, because he had just joined the Hawks that day. Then the Dec. 13 game was postponed. And he missed the Dec. 15 game against the Capitals because of U.S. immigration paperwork delays.

He finally debuted Friday against the Predators but played only 5:24 over seven shifts — four in the first period, two in the second and one in the third. Gabriel was a healthy scratch again Saturday against the Stars to let Brett Connolly back in the lineup.

But interim coach Derek King still envisions giving Gabriel that opportunity soon.

“I know it was only five [minutes Friday], and I recognized that after the game — I probably should’ve added a few more minutes in there,” King said. “But when you start killing penalties and you have power plays, it’s hard to get a guy like that on the ice.

“He’s going to get every opportunity to play. That’s why we brought him in. It’s more just getting him acclimated to our team [and] our systems and me getting to trust him.”

It was King, after all, who asked interim general manager Kyle Davidson to add a player like Gabriel to the group. Although the price to acquire him — struggling AHL defenseman Chad Krys — was low, the trade was made for a reason.

“I talked, when I first came in here, about maybe trying to get some guys in here that can protect our star players and protect themselves,” King said last week. “He’s going to finish his checks. He’s going to play a nice fourth-line role for us. [And] if guys are going to start taking liberties on our players, he’s the type of guy I know is going to defend them.”

Indeed, Gabriel’s most notable activity in his pro career to date has been fighting.

In his 49 previous NHL appearances with the Wild, Devils, Sharks and Leafs, he had five points, 156 hits and 153 penalty minutes. In 332 career AHL games, Gabriel had 68 points and 555 penalty minutes — including two points and 36 penalty minutes in 13 appearances this season for the Toronto Marlies.

“[I’m] physical,” Gabriel said Friday. “[I’m] going to play a north-south simple game. I try to be extremely detailed and play a really team-oriented game. And whenever the rough stuff gets going, that’s when I get going — I’d love to play that game; it’s no secret.”

While his playing style has become firmly established, his playing time, however, has not. The 2013 third-round pick has bounced around year to year, operating as more of a depth fill-in and fighting mercenary than regular NHL player.

Gabriel is hopeful — just as the Hawks are — that he can finally earn and maintain a consistent role in Chicago.

“It makes sense,” he said. “The [Hawks’] old regime never had any interest in me, so when there was a change, it’s pretty cool that they thought I fit the bill for this role. That’s what I’ve been working my whole life toward. I’m 28. This is my eighth year as a pro. I’ve had stints and never been able to stick. So I’m really trying to find a home here.”

Despite his limited ice time in his Hawks debut, he did play well. Gabriel was on the ice for six Hawks shots and only four Predators attempts, making him one of only four Hawks to finish above 50% in that regard.

The challenge will be keeping that up as his opportunities increase.

Bears’ Matt Nagy probably can’t save his job, but can make most of final 4 games

Matt Nagy has nothing left to lose as he finishes what will almost certainly be his final season as Bears head coach.

That’s because he has already lost virtually everything.

The Bears’ inept offense, which has looked viable only in isolated stretches over the last three seasons, has left them sitting 4-9 with four games remaining. While the final month of the season will be a thrilling scramble for playoff spots for most of the NFL — 26 of 32 teams were in the playoff field or within one game of it going into Sunday — there’s very little chance of excitement for the Bears.

So there’s minimal, if any, long-term significance in the last four games for Nagy. But in the immediacy, he must make the most of them for his own sake — he needs one more victory to assure himself a winning record over his tenure — and for a television audience desperate to be entertained.

If he has anything at all left in his bag of tricks, and he’d surely be scraping the bottom of it by now, this would be a great time to break it out.

Somehow the Bears have gotten more tiresome this season than when they went 8-8 last season and the season before.

The most “fun” they’ve been, as Nagy put it, was having one good quarter in what later unraveled as a 45-30 loss to the Packers last week. Their nine losses have come by a staggering 127 points. The tantalizing potential of rookie quarterback Justin Fields is the only thing keeping anyone’s attention at this point.

But amid the dreariness and the looming likelihood of being fired, Nagy has an opportunity to make his remaining games compelling. They’re all winnable, starting Monday night against the Vikings. The Bears finish with Seahawks, Giants and a rematch with the Vikings after that.

There’s no point, by the way, in the Bears checking out of these games in the interest of improving their draft position. Their 2022 first-round pick goes to the Giants as part of the trade for Fields.

Anyway, not only can Nagy show everyone a good time by igniting the offense, he gets another shot at showing he can be a creative, timely and effective play caller. That won’t impact his standing with the Bears, but it would help his chances of getting even a coordinator job when he leaves. With offensive coordinator Bill Lazor sidelined by the coronavirus, it’s likely Nagy will resume play calling.

That was supposedly a strength of his when the Bears pried him from the Chiefs in 2018, but that reputation has disintegrated. Under Nagy, the Bears have scored the eighth-fewest points in the NFL, managed the third-fewest yards per play, rushed for the sixth-fewest yards per rush, posted the seventh-worst passer rating and been fifth-worst on third downs.

Those numbers alone are conclusive to compel the Bears to fire him, but his odd handling of play calling has been just as troubling. In addition to his ongoing allergy to running the ball and various confusing decisions, he gave play calling to Lazor last season, took it back in the offseason with no clear explanation, then knew he had to give it back to him three games into this season.

Nothing Nagy does Monday or the rest of the season will negate or offset the pile of failures that has accumulated, but he can at least reclaim a bit of respectability. And in doing so, he’d allow for a semi-happy ending to his run with the Bears. The joy of 2018 is irretrievably lost, but he has a chance to bring back a semblance of that excitement with the time he has left.

One person was killed and a 14-year-old boy was wounded in a shooting in Pullman on the Far South Side Friday night. A 14-year-old boy stopped two officers about 7 p.m., telling them he and his brother had been shot in the 11100 block of South Doty Avenue, Chicago police said. Police followed the teen about two blocks and found another person shot, police said. That person, a male whose age was not immediately known, was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he later died, police said. His name hasn’t been released. The teen was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital with a gunshot wound to the wrist, police said. He was listed in good condition.
Hours later, a man was fatally shot early Saturday morning at a red light in Old Irving Park on the Northwest Side. The man, 35, was stopped at a red light about 3 a.m. in the 4700 block of West Irving Park Road when someone inside a black SUV opened fire, striking him in the chest and right side, police said. He then struck a parked car a block away, police said. He was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said. His name hasn’t been released yet.
A 54-year-old woman was shot to death Saturday afternoon on a sidewalk in Austin on the West Side. She was outside about 4:45 p.m. in the 4800 block of West Gladys Avenue when someone shot her in the stomach, police said. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where she was later pronounced dead, police said. She was identified as Melinda Crump by the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
In nonfatal attacks, Two people were shot while leaving a restaurant Friday night in the Near North Side. The man and woman were walking out of a restaurant about 9:30 p.m. in the 400 block of North Wabash Avenue when someone got out of a white Audi and fired shots, police said. The couple ran back inside the restaurant for cover, according to police. The man, 22, suffered multiple gunshot wounds on the body and was taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, police said. The woman, 24, was struck in the thigh and was taken to the same hospital in good condition.
A passenger was shot and wounded Saturday night during an attempted carjacking in North Austin on the Northwest Side. About 10:45 p.m., the passenger, a 22-year-old man, and the driver of the car were approached by two gunmen at a red light in the 1200 block of North Laramie Avenue, police said. When the driver sped away, one of the gunmen opened fire, striking the passenger in the neck and shoulder, police said. He was taken to Mt. Sinai, where he was in fair condition, police said.

At least 10 others have been wounded in shootings in Chicago since Friday evening.

Three people were killed and a 16-year-old boy was among 24 others wounded by gunfire in Chicago last weekend.

Blackhawks lose to Stars in overtime after jarring Tanner Kero injury

Barely three minutes had elapsed Saturday before another heart-wrenching injury marred another Blackhawks game.

Stars forward Tanner Kero was knocked unconscious after a crushing hit by Hawks forward Brett Connolly, who drilled Kero’s head as the puck whizzed along the glass past both of them.

The teams recovered from the shock to produce an exciting if sometimes chaotic game, and the Hawks demonstrated more of their resilience under interim coach Derek King by rallying from two goals down to force overtime. John Klingberg’s goal, however, handed them a 4-3 loss in Dallas.

“You always want to beat these teams and climb up the ladder,” King said. “But for us to come back like we did, it’s a huge positive. These guys should be really proud of themselves. Going into our next game, we should think about the little mistakes we made [and try to] stay out of the box. But we did a lot of good things tonight.”

Dominik Kubalik tipped in a shot by Brandon Hagel after an unforced Dallas turnover with 8:05 left in regulation to give the Hawks a third-period game-tying or go-ahead goal in four straight games. Kevin Lankinen kept the Hawks afloat most of the game, finishing with 35 saves.

But the early injury was far too similar to the Jujhar Khaira incident, a jarring moment less than two weeks old that still lingers in the Hawks’ minds.

Kero, a former Hawk, was motionless on the ice for minutes as medical officials stabilized him in a stretcher. He was transported for evaluation to the hospital, where he was conscious, alert and responsive, a Stars spokesperson said.

“These things seem to keep happening all over the place,” Dylan Strome said. “It’s tough to watch. Guys have families and kids, and you never know what’s going to happen.”

Connolly was ejected and also received a five-minute major for interference, giving the Stars an early power play on which they scored twice. King said Connolly was still “shaken up” about the incident after the game.

The Stars later stretched the lead to 3-1 before the Hawks rallied to earn a point for a second consecutive game.

“It’s kind of crazy, to be honest,” said Strome, who scored the Hawks’ second goal. “He’s knocked out cold, gets wheeled off on a stretcher, and you just go right back out there. You have to brush it off and know he’s in good hands and there’s nothing else we can do from the ice.”

Penalty kill struggling

After allowing three goals on eight Dallas power plays, the Hawks’ penalty kill has allowed multiple goals in four of the last six games.

That’s the culmination of an overall poor trend over the last month.

Since Nov. 26, the Hawks have conceded 13 goals on 33 chances — a 39.4% conversion rate.

Predators shut down

The NHL shut down the Predators — one day after they beat the Hawks in overtime — “due to concern for a rising number of positive cases as well as the potential for continued COVID spread in the coming days.”

The Hawks have yet to have any positive cases, but their potential exposure during the game Friday is worrisome.

The Predators joined the Bruins, Flames, Avalanche and Panthers, who already were forced to pause through the holiday break, and the Maple Leafs and Canucks also are trending in that direction based on their postponements this weekend.

1 killed, another hurt in Belmont Cragin fire

One person was killed and another injured in a fire Saturday night in Belmont Cragin on the Northwest Side, according to Chicago fire officials.

The blaze broke out just before 8 p.m. in the 5100 block of West Grand Avenue, fire officials said.

One person was taken to Community First Medical Center, where they were later pronounced dead, officials said. The other was listed in serious condition at West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park.

Crews have not been able to complete a search of the structure due to the building’s instability.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, officials said.

This is a developing story. Check back for details.

Ex-NBA PG Williams tops ex-RB Gore by decisionon December 19, 2021 at 5:05 am

TAMPA, Fla. — The boxing match between former NBA All-Star guard Deron Williams and star NFL running back Frank Gore was switched Friday to an exhibition inexplicably by the Florida State Boxing Commission.

Make no mistake, though. It was a legitimate — and entertaining — fight.

Williams defeated Gore via split decision (38-37, 37-38, 40-35) on Saturday night on the Jake Paul vs. Tyron Woodley undercard at Amalie Arena. On Thursday at the prefight news conference, Williams said NBA players have the stigma of being soft. He disproved that alleged stigma against Gore with a gritty performance.

1hBrianna Williams

“I always was a physical point guard,” Williams said after the fight. “I never shied away from contact, and I showed that today. People think basketball players are soft, but I never was one. That’s what I was looking to accomplish here today.”

Williams outlanded Gore in total punches 48-39 and power punches 35-28, per CompuBox. Williams’ best round was the fourth, when he outlanded Gore 12-5 in total punches. Gore outlanded Williams in total punches 16-15 in the second.

The bout was contested at 215 pounds over four rounds with 12-ounce gloves. The commission ruled it an exhibition Friday when it was originally scheduled to be a pro fight. The bout will not go on either man’s pro boxing records.

“Maybe I gained some new fans, but I’m just glad I made my team happy and my family proud,” Williams said. “My mom was nervous. She didn’t want to watch and see her son beaten up, so I hope she was proud of that.”

Williams and Gore were respectful with each other all week. But things got heated in the ring. At one point in the second round, both men shoved each other through the ropes. Gore had to be checked by the ringside physician after falling to the apron, but he was able to continue.

“It’s all good,” Gore said. “He won the fight tonight. He fought hard. I fought hard. I just still have to learn some stuff. He did a good job tonight. We’ll see if I fight again. I had fun tonight. I’ll go back and talk to my team to see what’s next.”

The 6-foot-3 Williams used his reach advantage well throughout, especially in the first round where he showed a solid jab and right hand. Gore might have landed the harder shots overall. But the judges felt Williams was the slicker boxer in more rounds. Both men, though, were competent given their lack of experience in the ring.

Williams, 37, is a former three-time NBA All-Star. He has not played in the league since 2017. Williams has been training in mixed martial arts for years and is a part owner of Fortis MMA in Dallas. Gore, 38, was the big crowd favorite. The Miami native played in the NFL last year and actually turned down offers to play this year to give boxing a try.
