Justin Jefferson could have a field day against the Chicago BearsRyan Heckmanon December 20, 2021 at 5:30 pm

Monday night, the Chicago Bears get their first crack at the Minnesota Vikings this season. While the Bears are essentially out of the NFC playoff race, the Vikings are very much alive.

Minnesota sits at 6-7 and currently in the ninth seed, with the same record as the Washington Football Team. With the New Orleans Saints beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday night, pulling their record to 7-7, the Vikings have to beat Chicago to keep pace.

One of the ways Minnesota has been able to stay in the thick of the playoff picture is due to the play of second-year wide receiver Justin Jefferson. After the Vikings’ loss to Baltimore back in Week 9, the team made a conscious effort to get Jefferson more involved.

The result? Jefferson has been on a tear since then, and the Bears could be in huge trouble Monday night.

The Chicago Bears could be without their entire starting secondary, leaving Justin Jefferson to feast.

Since that verbal commitment to Jefferson in Week 9, the former LSU standout has caught 39 passes for 656 yards and four touchdowns. That is an average of 131.2 yards per game for Jefferson.

The Bears, meanwhile, are depleted in their secondary. Cornerbacks Artie Burns and Duke Shelley, along with safety Eddie Jackson, had already been on the COVID-19/reserve list going into Sunday.

Then, in addition to those guys, the Bears added safety Tashaun Gipson and cornerback Jaylon Johnson to the list. That now means the Bears will likely suit up without their entire starting secondary against the Vikings.

With Marqui Christian, Xavier Crawford and DeAndre Houston-Carson out, Chicago could have only four members of the active roster in their secondary against Minnesota. They will have to end up calling some members of the practice squad to add depth.

Jefferson will likely draw Kindle Vildor Monday night, which is bad news for Chicago. Heck, even if it’s not Vildor, it will end up being Teez Tabor. Those are the top two corners currently available to the Bears — and neither one will keep up with Jefferson.

The young wideout is well on his way to a Pro Bowl bid and potentially an All Pro selection, depending upon how the year shakes out. He’s playing at that type of level, and is one of the sole reasons Minnesota’s offense has been able to put up some points over the past few weeks.

With this being such a pivotal game for Minnesota and their playoff chase, expect a flurry of targets for Jefferson. Along with that, expect it to be an ugly night for the Bears’ secondary. It’s going to be on the shoulders of Robert Quinn and that defensive line to make sure Kirk Cousins doesn’t get many clear opportunities.

DeMar DeRozan gunning for revenge as Chicago Bulls take on Houston RocketsRyan Heckmanon December 20, 2021 at 4:47 pm

Last time the Chicago Bulls and Houston Rockets met, Billy Donovan’s crew was the face of the beginning of a historical streak. The Rockets were then 1-16 before pulling off an improbable win over the Bulls.

From there, Houston ripped off seven wins in a row. You could say that victory is what changed the whole season for the Rockets.

Monday night, though, should be much different. The Rockets (10-20) face a Bulls team that’s 18-10 and coming off a big victory over LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers. Sure, it’s a back-to-back, but the Bulls are still considerably fresh.

It was a win that saw DeRozan go off in the fourth quarter, scoring 19 of his 38 in that period. Once again, DeRozan proved why he is the best fourth quarter scorer in all of basketball. The last meeting against Houston, however, DeRozan wasn’t up to snuff.

Chicago Bulls star DeMar DeRozan should be in for a bigger night against the Houston Rockets.

In the Bulls’ loss to Houston earlier this year, DeRozan only scored 17 points on 6-for-19 shooting. Tonight, he’s coming in fairly well-rested after missing two weeks and showing up big time against Los Angeles.

Last meeting, the Rockets enjoyed an unusually great shooting night as they finished 50 percent from the field and made 17 from beyond the arc. The Bulls had a tough time staying with Houston’s shooting from start to finish.

Since the Rockets’ 7-game winning streak ended, they are just 2-4 and most recently topped the Detroit Pistons.

DeRozan enters this second meeting with Houston averaging 26.8 points per game, good for fifth in the NBA this season. The Bulls will still be without Zach LaVine, who also finds himself in the top-10 in scoring.

LaVine will be out through Christmas, still coming back from health and safety protocols. After the Bulls’ win over the Lakers, DeRozan said he texted LaVine, “get your a** back” as soon as he possibly can. DeRozan also mentioned how much easier LaVine makes it on him when they’re both in the lineup.

DeRozan and LaVine remain the NBA’s top scoring duo, and one has to imagine that once they’re reunited on the court, they will continue to keep that top spot.

Monday night, it will be mostly on DeRozan again, though. For at least a couple more games, DeRozan will have to shoulder the weight and keep up his extraordinary effort. The Bulls are currently the second seed in the Eastern Conference, just behind the Brooklyn Nets — whom they have beaten twice already this season.

4 killed, 21 wounded by gunfire in Chicago over weekend

Four people were killed and 21 others wounded by gunfire in Chicago over the weekend.

The homicide victims were a 17-year-old shot on the Far South Side, a 54-year-old woman killed in Austin, a 35-year-old man killed in Old Irving Park and a 30-year-old man killed in North Park.

Three police districts were tied with three shootings each: The 4th District, which responded to the homicide in Pullman; the 10th District covering Lawndale; and the 7th District covering Englewood and Gresham.

With four dead, the period was about as violent as last weekend, when three people were killed and 24 others wounded. The weekend before then, nine people were killed and 23 others wounded.

Weekend murders

A 17-year-old boy was killed and his younger brother wounded in a shooting in Pullman on the Far South Side Friday night. The 14-year-old brother stopped two officers about 7 p.m., telling them he and his sibling had been shot in the 11100 block of South Doty Avenue, Chicago police said. Police followed the teen about two blocks and found the brother. The 17-year-old was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he later died, police said. His name hasn’t been released. The 14-year-old was taken in good condition to Comer Children’s Hospital with a gunshot wound to the wrist.
A man was fatally shot early Saturday morning at a red light in Old Irving Park on the Northwest Side. The man, 35, was stopped at a red light about 3 a.m. in the 4700 block of West Irving Park Road when someone in a black SUV opened fire, striking him in the chest and right side, police said. He then struck a parked car a block away. He was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His name hasn’t been released.
A 54-year-old woman was shot to death Saturday afternoon on a sidewalk in Austin on the West Side. Melinda Crump was outside about 4:45 p.m. in the 4800 block of West Gladys Avenue when someone shot her in the stomach, police said. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
A man was shot to death Sunday night while driving in the North Park neighborhood on the North Side. The 30-year-old was attacked just before 10 p.m. in the 5500 block of North Kedzie, police said. He suffered one gunshot wound to the head and was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was pronounced dead.

Nonfatal attacks

Two people were shot while leaving a restaurant Friday night in the Near North Side neighborhood. The man and woman were walking out of a restaurant about 9:30 p.m. in the 400 block of North Wabash Avenue when someone got out of a white Audi and fired shots, police said. The couple ran back inside the restaurant for cover, according to police. The man, 22, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, police said. The woman, 24, was struck in the thigh and was taken to the same hospital in good condition.
A 17-year-old boy was shot Sunday afternoon while riding his bike in Lawndale on the West Side. Just after 3 p.m., the teen was biking in the 3500 block of West Douglas Boulevard when a black sedan pulled up and someone got out and began firing shots, police said. He suffered gunshot wounds to the right hand and left elbow, and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, according to police.
A passenger was shot and wounded Saturday night during an attempted carjacking in North Austin on the Northwest Side. About 10:45 p.m., the passenger, a 22-year-old man, and the driver of the car were approached by two gunmen at a red light in the 1200 block of North Laramie Avenue, police said. When the driver sped away, one of the gunmen opened fire, striking the passenger in the neck and shoulder, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in fair condition, police said.

At least 16 others were wounded in shootings in Chicago from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.

Bears defensive coordinator Sean Desai to return from coronavirus

Bears defensive coordinator Sean Desai has recovered from the coronavirus and will call plays Monday night against the Vikings, head coach Matt Nagy told WBBM-AM on Monday morning.

Desai tested positive for the coronavirus Dec. 13. Thursday, he said he felt fine but was frustrated by working remotely.

It’s unclear if either offensive coordinator Bill Lazor or special teams coordinator Chris Tabor will come back Monday night. The Bears said quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo will be the offensive coordinator if Lazor remains out, but Nagy hinted to the station that the head coach would be the one to call plays.

Tabor would be replaced by assistant special teams coordinator Brian Ginn.

Coronavirus ravaged Halas Hall over the past week. As of Monday morning, some of the team’s best players — receiver Allen Robinson, safety Eddie Jackson and cornerback Jaylon Johnson, among others — were on the NFL’s reserve/COVID-19 list.

The Bears could take players off the list — or, if anyone tests positive, add them to it — Monday afternoon.

Bears DC clears COVID protocols, back for MNFon December 20, 2021 at 2:25 pm

Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Sean Desai has cleared COVID-19 protocols and will return for the Monday Night Football game against the Minnesota Vikings, coach Matt Nagy said on WBBM-AM in Chicago.

Desai, along with offensive coordinator Bill Lazor and special teams coordinator Chris Tabor, entered COVID-19 protocols last week.

With Lazor and Tabor still out, John DeFilippo and Brian Ginn will serve as the offensive and special teams coordinators, respectively, on Monday night, Nagy said. Nagy suggested that he will be the Bears’ offensive playcaller and will work closely with DeFilippo.

The Bears (4-9) placed cornerback Jaylon Johnson and safety Tashaun Gipson Sr. on the reserve/COVID-19 list Sunday and now have 14 players on the list, including the entire starting secondary, with Johnson and Gipson joining safety Eddie Jackson and cornerback Artie Burns.

The list includes receiver Allen Robinson, backup quarterback Andy Dalton, right tackle Larry Borom and defensive end Mario Edwards Jr.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
