At discretion of doctors, White Sox manager Tony La Russa to miss game Tuesday

At the discretion of his doctors, White Sox manager Tony La Russa will miss Tuesday night’s game against the Royals, the club announced about 45 minutes before the first pitch.

La Russa is scheduled to undergo further medical testing tomorrow in Chicago. The Sox said they expect to provide an update on La Russa’s status before to tomorrow night’s game against the Royals.

Bench coach Miguel Cairo will manage the team in La Russa’s absence.

La Russa, 77, held his daily meeting with media at about 4 p.m. and seemed normal. He was also seen talking to general manager Rick Hahn on the field before the game and going through his normal routine.

Cairo, 48, went 2-0 as the White Sox acting manager in 2021.

‘Girlfriend’ review: musical is a winning mix at PrideArts

Can teenagers today understand what it once meant to make someone a mixtape? The careful selection and sequencing of tracks, maximizing the available space on each side of the cassette, fervently hoping you could convey the right tone and coded message through other people’s music. For those who came of age in the ’80s and ’90s, the act of putting together a mixtape was a labor of love, and sometimes a confession of it.

“Girlfriend,” playwright Todd Almond’s sweet and inventive rock musical now on stage at PrideArts, hinges on the gifting of a mixtape; it’s also, in itself, a narratively enhanced example of the form.

‘Girlfriend’

Almond’s chosen tracks all come from the same artist: Matthew Sweet, the power-pop troubadour who found success on the modern rock charts in the early 1990s. Almond pulls mostly from Sweet’s 1991 breakthrough album, also titled “Girlfriend,” which the singer famously wrote in the midst of a divorce from his first wife.

With titles like “I’ve Been Waiting,” “Reaching Out,” and “I Wanted to Tell You,” Sweet’s songs vibrate with the kind of longing and vulnerability that make them well-suited for communicating with a crush or for musical theater. And three decades ago, they spoke to Almond, then a closeted gay teenager in small-town Alliance, Nebraska, who heard something in the music and lyrics of fellow Nebraskan Sweet that felt like a lifeline.

“Girlfriend,” the musical, is not coincidentally set in Alliance, Nebraska, in 1993. It centers on 18-year-olds Will (Joe Lewis) and Mike (Peter Stielstra), who strike up an unexpected friendship in the summer following their high school graduation.

Will has accepted that he’s gay, and tells himself he’s accepted the ostracism that comes with it. He couldn’t be more thrilled to be done with the social hell of high school, as he tells us in one of his frequent asides to the audience; it may be the middle of June, but he declares it “New Year’s Day.” Yet in his focus on reaching the school finish line, Will doesn’t seem to have given much thought to his plans for the new year.

Mike, whose inner thoughts we do not get to hear, is more of a puzzle — for us and for Will. Mike’s in with the popular crowd, a star baseball player headed to college in the fall on a full-ride scholarship. But in the waning weeks of senior year, Mike approached Will with a cassette tape full of songs he thought the latter boy might like.

Mike professes to have a girlfriend — one who “doesn’t go to our school” and “lives far away.” While it isn’t made explicit, this unseen girlfriend is likely a defensive fiction. Meanwhile, their shared taste in music provides an excuse for Mike to keep asking Will to hang out, and a safe-ish way to test new waters: When they sing along in Mike’s car to the title track’s refrain of “I’d sure love to call you my girlfriend,” how much extra meaning is under the surface?

The pairing of Out Nerd and Closeted Jock is almost its own queer coming-of-age trope at this point, powering stories from Jonathan Harvey’s 1993 play “Beautiful Thing” to this year’s Netflix hit “Heartstopper.”

The casting of Lewis and Stielstra in director Jay Espa?o’s production subtly subverts expectations, though. Rather than a sensitive hunk who finds something unexpectedly awakened in him, Stielstra’s Mike is just as neurotic as Lewis’ Will. (In his Chicago debut, Stielstra has an ethereal magnetism and a killer falsetto that mark him as one to watch.)

Mike doesn’t have to have his eyes opened to the closed-mindedness of his friends; instead he’s practically pleading for Will to hear the signals he’s sending out, on tape and in real life, and pull him to the safety, and the danger, of being himself. It’s a compelling twist on the formula, and the two actors have the chemistry — and the honey-sweet harmonies — to pull it off.

Espa?o’s production has some practical drawbacks. Sight lines are a particular problem, which seems like something that should be avoidable at a storefront scale, and he and scenic designer Isabella Noe could work to make scene transitions smoother. And the onstage band, led by music director Robert Ollis, doesn’t quite exude rock-star vibes.

But looking at the track list as a whole — quirky conceit, endearing characters, captivating actors and clever soundtrack — “Girlfriend” is a winning mix.

Chicago White Sox prospect Norge Vera Is turning heads

Chicago White Sox prospect Norge Vera has been promoted to double-A Birmingham

Last week a slue of White Sox prospects were promoted to double A Birmingham in a movement called “Project Birmingham”. This movement included seeing top prospect overall Colson Montgomery and NO.5 overall prospect Bryan Ramos making the jump to double A. While it is exciting to see a team’s best prospects rise through the ranks, sometimes in all the hype surrounding some of the top prospects, others get overlooked.

While Norge Vera is not necessarily overlooked being the White Sox No.6 overall prospect. He is proving that he wants a piece of that potential future star hype himself. Vera has turned heads ever since he has entered the organization. In the Dominican summer league in 2021 Vera struck out 34 batters in 19 innings and only allowed 9 hits. That is a 16.1 SO/9 clip. Clearly Vera has electric stuff. Vera backed up his performance in the summer league in 2022 by being promoted three times in a single season. So far in the 2022 season Vera has pitched 30 innings and struck out 44 batters while only allowing 15 hits posting a filthy 13.2 SO/9.  Vera has also struck out 50% of the batters he’s faced so far in double A (small sample size). Norge Vera also limits the long ball. He has only given up a single homer so far this season which is exactly what you want to see with someone that has the potential to be a future closer.

Norge Vera has serious roots in Cuban baseball history

Norge Vera was signed by the White sox out of the 2020-21 international class for $1.5 million. Vera is the son of Cuban baseball star Norge Luis Vera. Vera’s father won 9 gold medals including a gold medal at the 2004 olympic games. Norge Vera Sr also completed one of the best seasons a pitcher in professional baseball can have. In the 1999-2000 season Vera Sr went 17-2 with 12 of those wins being complete games and 8 of the complete games being complete game shutouts. Vera also pitched to the tune of an unholy 0.97 ERA. He was practically invincible on the mound. If Norge Vera Jr can pitch anything like his father, the White Sox have an absolute stud just waiting in the wings.

Here’s a youtube video if you want to know more about Vera and his background.

Full Bears roster after cut to 53 players

There will still be some end-of-the roster maneuvering over the next few days, but the Bears have mostly settled who’s on the team heading into this season.

The team made its final preseason roster cuts Tuesday and now has 53 player as it scours the rest of the NFL’s waivers and releases to see if there’s anyone they want to add. It seems likely the Bears will look for help at cornerback, wide receiver and on the offensive line.

Here is the roster:

The Bears are maneuvering to get their roster down to 53 players by Tuesday at 3 p.m. and got started by cutting four players Sunday and Monday.

The team waived offensive lineman Jean Delance with a non-football illness designation Sunday, then waived safety Jon Alexander, offensive lineman Corey Dublin and wide receiver Kevin Shaa on Monday to bring them down to 75 players.

It’s a virtual certainty that they’ll pick up a few players cut by other teams. The most likely positions for that would on the offensive line and at cornerback and wide receiver.

The Bears also must keep injured wide receivers Byron Pringle and N’Keal Harry on the active roster Tuesday, but can put them on injured reserve after that if needed.

The Chicago Bears have talented options at wide receiver after roster cuts

The Chicago Bears arent done adding talent to their roster

Today is the day teams have to cut down to 53 players, and already some major receiver talent is available for the Chicago Bears. They’ll be keeping a keen eye on the waiver wire this week, and with the Chicago Bears sitting at number seven, they’ll have a chance to claim some real talent to add to Justin Fields list of weaponry.

Lets take a look at some moves around the league that already have Bears fans excited.

WRs Of Note that have been Released:
1. Tyler Johnson – Bucs
2. Prestan Williams – Dolphins
3. Josh Gordon – KC
4. Kendric Pryor – Bengals

The biggest name here is obviously Josh Gordon.  Having spent most of his career suspended from the league, I seriously doubt the Bears will be interested in his services. That being said though, he is a physical freak, and would fill a massive void of talent on the Bears roster. Personally, I think Josh Gordon would look great in a Chicago Bears uniform also.

Tyler Johnson is the biggest surprise here. At 24 years old, he is young and talented enough that its hard to imagine he makes it to the 7th slot on waivers.  He would be a solid pickup though. He caught 36 of 55 pass attempts last year for 360 yards on a deep Tampa roster.  He caught exactly 0 touchdowns however, which probably factored into this decision with the Bucs signing Julio Jones and Russell Gage this offseason. Again, I’m not sure he will be available for Chicago, but its a name they should definitely try and sign.

This is the rare player that might be worth claiming and putting on your 53 even though he hasn’t been with your offense in camp. Johnson is a solid WR who could benefit from a bigger opportunity somewhere else. https://t.co/gnA3uW3KSM

Preston WIlliams is a very intriguing talent that the Chicago Bears have a real shot at claiming. He has flashed real talent in this league, but he just cannot stay healthy.  Willams has posted 56 catches, for 787 yards and 7 touchdowns in 24 games. This would would be a very low risk, high reward target for the bears in my estimation.  Chicago has also previously shown interest in his services, before they made a deal for N’Keal Harry.

#DaBears were Rumoured to be Interested in Williams Earlier in the Offseason via Trade.
Let’s see if they have interest & if he would even make it to their waiver priority.

Kendric Pryor is an UDFA that showed a lot of flashes this offseason, with 13 receptions for 182 yards and a TD.  The Bengals are very high on him, but they have a very deep receiver room and it just became a numbers game. Teams will take a long look at him, and the Chicago Bears would be smart to be one of them.

Bengals releasing WR Kendric Pryor, per source. Former Wisconsin standout had good preseason but lost in numbers game. Same with Kwamie Lassiter, whom Zac Taylor cited as having a strong offseason/training camp.

Freddie Swain, who was expected to compete for a starting iob this year for Seattle, has been released by the Seahawks. A sixth round pick in 2020, he not only brings experience, but above average special teams value as well. Last year Swain had 25 catches for 343 yards in an inept Seahawks offense. On special teams hes averaged 8.6 yards per punt return, and 22.8 yards per kick return.

#Seahawks have released WR Freddie Swain, per source. A key piece in last year’s offense with 25 catches and 343 yards is now available.

Recapping the Chicago Bulls’ offseason

With training camp right around the corner, we’re looking back at some key moments of the Chicago Bulls’ offseason.

The 2022-23 NBA season is quickly approaching. If the Chicago Bulls tend to fall off your radar during the summer, you’ve come to the right place. It’s been a long offseason; maybe you just need some refreshers regarding some of the key moments. The Chicago Bulls made plenty of headlines over the summer. Let’s start with the 2022 NBA Draft.

NBA Draft and Dalen Terry

Dalen Terry was selected 18th overall by the Bulls way back on June 23rd. The Bulls only had one selection in the 2022 draft. Terry is a versatile wing who has showcased some impressive passing skills. Bulls fans watched the rookie out of Arizona very closely throughout Summer League. Dalen Terry played well in Summer League but suffered a minor hamstring injury in the team’s final game. Thankfully Terry made a swift recovery from this injury.

Besides the NBA Draft and Summer League, a major highlight of Terry’s offseason was his performance in the Crawsover Pro-Am. Former NBA player Jamal Crawford hosts the renowned pro-am league out of his hometown of Seattle. Dalen Terry participated in one game and dropped an impressive 56 points, 15 rebounds, and 7 assists.

Zach LaVine returns

There was never much doubt that Zach LaVine wanted to return to the Bulls. President of Basketball Ops Arturas Karnisovas had made it clear that he wanted to keep the team’s core together. LaVine ended up signing a 5-year, $215.2 million deal to return to the Bulls when free agency opened.

LaVine made it clear later in the offseason that he had no intentions of signing elsewhere. He only met with the Chicago Bulls when free agency opened. This Bulls team feels as though they have unfinished business and a lot more to prove.

Other Free Agent signings

The Bulls didn’t only bring back Zach LaVine, they also reunited with the high-flying wing Derrick Jones Jr. Jones who signed a 2-year, $6.6 million deal to return to Chicago.

The team also improved their rebounding ability by adding veteran center Andre Drummond. Drummond is an incredibly skilled rebounder who signed a 2-year, $6.6 million deal with the Bulls.

Goran Dragic also signed with the Bulls this offseason. The veteran point guard agreed to a 1-year, $2.9 million deal, and his presence gives the roster incredible depth at the point guard position. With the team suffering from many injuries last season, having this depth might bring fans some peace of mind.

Lonzo Ball’s recovery

The health of starting point guard Lonzo Ball has been under a microscope for the entirety of the offseason. Ball has been trying to work his way back to being fully healthy since January.

Sources: Bulls guard Lonzo Ball is expected to be shut down for the remainder of the season. Ball has been rehabbing from meniscus surgery in late January, but continues to feel discomfort amid several recovery methods to return to action and a bone bruise in his knee.

There has been optimism lately that Lonzo Ball will be ready for the regular season. If not, the aforementioned depth at point guard will definitely come in handy.

Summer League standouts

After the NBA Draft concluded, the Chicago Bulls signed Justin Lewis to a 2-way contract. Lewis had an impressive college career at Marquette and played well in the Summer League alongside Dalen Terry, Marko Simonovic, and Carlik Jones. Unfortunately, Lewis suffered an ACL tear in early August and is expected to miss this season.

It also was announced that Summer League standout Carlik Jones recently signed a unique deal with the Bulls.

The Chicago Bulls have confirmed the Carlik Jones signing.
It’s an Exhibit 10 contract which gives the Bulls the flexibility to convert it into a two-way deal if they choose to.

The upcoming season

The 2022-23 NBA regular season begins on October 18th. The Chicago Bulls play their first game on the road against the Miami Heat the following day. Preseason for the NBA starts even sooner. The league’s first preseason game takes place on September 30th, and the Chicago Bulls begin their preseason on October 4th.
