Sun Belt Football: Louisiana Lafayette vs Southern Miss betting preview

The Louisiana Lafayette Ragin Cajuns look to stay hot in the Sun Belt conference Football as they take on Southern Mississippi on Thursday night.

The ULL Ragin Cajuns head to Hattiesburg, Mississippi tonight to clash with Sun Belt Conference foe Southern Miss. Both teams are riding two game winnings streaks as Southern Miss downed Texas State last week 20-14 and ULL defeated Arkansas St. 38-18.

Let’s get into our betting preview for this key Sun Belt conference game on Thursday night.

ULL has gotten on track after a slow start and has covered 3 straight games including a 10 point outright road win over Marshall as a -10.5 point underdog. What has sparked this offensive turnaround for ULL has been the play of Fresno St. transfer Ben Woolridge at QB.

Since he has taken over at QB Woolridge has thrown 10 TD passes to only 1 INT and is no longer sharing snaps with former starter Chandler Fields. ULL also gets starting RB Chris Smith back tonight who has missed the last two games with injury. Smith has averaged over 6.1 yards per rush for his career at ULL.

Southern Miss has covered only one of their last 3 games and has turned the ball over 8 times during that span. Despite still winning some games, the offensive struggles have persisted since losing starting QB Ty Keyes in week 1.

I think that trend continues again tonight for Southern Miss, and I look for ULL to generate some turnovers against either backup QB for Southern Miss (Zach Wilcke or Jake Lang). The ULL defense is is tied for 3rd in the nation in INTs per game at 1.7, and also tied for fourth best turnover differential in the nation at +1.2 per game. Conversely, Southern Miss is ranked 128th out of 130 FBS teams in turnover differential at -1.5 per game.

Our play for this Sun Belt Showdown

I do see heavy public money coming in on  the ULL spread of -1.5, which concerns me a little bit, but I still think Ben Woolridge can stay hot and lead ULL to a road win tonight like he did against Marshall two weeks ago.  Ragin Cajuns on the money line tonight -115.

Blackhawks embrace rebuild in commercial series

Chicago is the rebuild capital of the sports world. The Bears, Blackhawks and Cubs are in the process of rebuilding, and the White Sox emerged from it in the last few years. The Bulls are the lone holdout, essentially skipping the rebuild phase by acquiring other teams’ veteran players.

Though their methodology was obvious, the Bears and Cubs have bristled at the word “rebuild,” and for good reason. It’s an indication that they’re probably going to lose a lot of games. The Sox didn’t have a problem with the word, but they certainly didn’t use it to promote the team.

That’s not the case with the Hawks. Not only have they publicly embraced their rebuild, they’re using it in TV commercials. In the first of their new series of spots, with the slogan “Ready to work,” the Hawks come right out and say it:

“They say rebuilds are hard,” the actor says. “And make no mistake, this is a rebuild.”

When I first heard that, I was taken aback. We all know the Hawks are basically restarting the organization, from the front office to the locker room. But to prolong that narrative, rather than, say, focus on the game-day experience at the United Center, seemed counterintuitive.

“This is Chicago,” the actor continues, shrugging a shoulder as if to brush off the meaning of a rebuild. “We love ourselves a good rebuild. They once rebuilt the entire city after a fire so big, they’re still calling it great.”

That’s clever, but while fans might agree that a rebuild is best for the team, I can’t imagine they love it.

“Was it easy? No,” the actor says. “And keep in mind, these are the same people who drink Marlot by choice. So yeah, rebuilds are hard – for other cities.”

That’s an appeal to the toughness of Hawks fans – as well as a nod to an iconic Chicago liquor known for its bitter taste. Get the message?

Though the ad is well produced, I wondered if it was a case of over-sharing. Why hit fans over the head with a hockey stick about this rebuild?

“We are committed to being honest and transparent with our fan base,” Hawks president of business operations Jaime Faulkner said. “The reality is, we are rebuilding both on and off the ice. So we want to be honest about that. But we also want to have fun with it. We’re going to lean into it.

“Fans have confused the rebuild with, we want to lose. So we were hopeful in the marketing campaign that we could be clear that rebuilding in no way means we’re showing up to lose a game. Hopefully, the fans are seeing that when they’re seeing the level of play and the competitiveness of the players.”

The campaign was born out of summertime meetings with season-ticket holders, who predominantly asked about the state of the team. The answer is clear, and Faulkner isn’t concerned that the Hawks are talking too much about it.

“On Tuesday, we had two standing ovations in the middle of the game,” she said. “One of the things that our players lean on our fans for is to help make the United Center a very hard place [for opponents] to play in. Our fans have been delivering on that. So it is still a very fun and electric environment.”

Fans watching from home might have noticed another form of advertising that’s new to Hawks broadcasts. NHL teams are using Digitally Enhanced Dasherboards, which displays graphics on the boards that only viewers of the broadcast can see. They’re visible when the coverage camera position (center-ice view) is in use.

DED allows for the digital replacement of the static ads with dynamic advertising and other graphics, including animations. Seeing movement on the boards during game play can be distracting, but the Hawks are cognizant of that.

“The technology has a lot of capability to animate and almost be an additional screen for us when you’re watching a game,” Faulkner said. “But we do have to be very careful to not distract from live play. So how we implement that going forward will be making sure that we’re using it in the right way.

“We’re going to be really smart about when we animate. They’ll be at whistles. So if we’re going on the power play, the boards might have some animation that says that. But then we’ll go back flat once the puck drops. We want to add to the viewing experience, not take away from it.”

Where viewers will tune in for that experience in a couple of years is in question. The rights agreement among the Hawks, Bulls and Sox with NBC Sports Chicago expires in October 2024. Wherever they end up, Faulkner said the teams will stay together.

“We’re committed to staying with the Bulls and the White Sox, and NBC is a great partner right now,” she said. “We’re just trying to learn and figure out what’s happening on the media landscape so we know what our next step is going to be.”

Jon Sciambi looks forward to 2023 World Series, looks back on 2022 Cubs broadcasts

The World Series that begins tonight between the Phillies and Astros will be the last one Jon “Boog” Sciambi will watch from home for some time.

Next season, Sciambi, the Cubs’ TV voice on Marquee Sports Network, will replace Dan Shulman on ESPN Radio’s broadcast of the Fall Classic. Shulman, who has called it since 2011, decided to step away from the Series but will continue as ESPN TV’s lead college basketball announcer.

Shulman will call his last World Series, which can be heard on ESPN 1000, with analysts Jessica Mendoza and Eduardo Perez and reporter Buster Olney.

“Since [MLB] started with a national play-by-play in 1979, it’s been Vin Sully, Jack Buck, Jon Miller and Dan Shulman,” Sciambi said. “That’s a pretty amazing list. That I get to be the fifth person on the list, it blows me away. It’s humbling.”

Sciambi has called “Sunday Night Baseball” for ESPN Radio since 2010. Shulman had been allowed to continue calling the World Series even after leaving the “SNB” TV booth following the 2017 season.

It was strange having Shulman drop in after Sciambi had been calling games all season. Not that Shulman, an outstanding broadcaster, couldn’t handle it, but that Sciambi was deserving of the honor. In a most amicable passing of the torch, it soon will be his.

As for his second season in the Cubs’ booth, Sciambi was effusive in his praise of the Marquee crew, particularly broadcast partner Jim Deshaies.

“I just love working with JD,” Sciambi said. “I feel like he and I have really found a pretty good space. We both enjoy what we’re doing for this network, for this team and with each other.

“I’m so happy with the Cubs job. We were 74-88 this year, and I had a blast. We have really good, fun people who bring good energy every day. When I get out of my car at the park, I’m like, this is where I want to be. That’s the best feeling.”

After decompressing from three rounds of playoff games for ESPN, Sciambi will turn his attention to college basketball for the network. His first game is No. 4 Kentucky at No. 2 Gonzaga on Nov. 20.

Chicago Bears place Lucas Patrick on IR; cut wide receiver

The Chicago Bears will miss Lucas Patrick for a while

The Chicago Bears hinted on Wednesday that center Lucas Patrick would be headed to the injured reserve this week. This week, the Bears promoted an offensive lineman as the team placed Patrick and offensive tackle, Larry Borom on the injury report. The Bears will be shorthanded when they take on the Dallas Cowboys in Week 8.

According to a statement by the Bears, the team has officially placed Patrick on the injured reserve. They also announced they had signed defensive lineman Gerri Green to the practice squad. Wide receiver Reggie Roberson has been released from the practice squad.

#Bears make roster move:
We have placed OL Lucas Patrick on Reserve/Injured, signed DL Gerri Green to the practice squad and released WR Reggie Roberson from the practice squad.

Roberson’s cut made sense as the Bears signed Daurice Fountain to the practice squad this week. Green was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in 2019 in the sixth round. He played for the New England Patriots for a short time before returning to then-defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus’ defense in 2020. He was cut in September 2020. The Tennessee Titans most recently waived Green on Oct 24th.

Will Patrick Willams Sour Play Hold The Chicago Bulls Back This Season?

Will Patrick Williams Live Up To The 4th Overall Pick?

The Chicago Bulls have done a wonderful job turning around the franchise from the abyss it was in just three short years ago. After the hiring of Arturas Karnisovas in April 2020, many fans were excited about his vision for the Bulls team.

And it all started with the 2020 draft, in which the Bulls drafted Patrick Williams as the fourth overall selection. Williams had all the potential to be a great player coming out of Florida State University. Standing at 6’7 with a wing span of 7 feet, many people compared him to Kawhi Leonard due to their similar builds.

At this point, that’s where the comparison ends. Williams has not been able to progress through his first couple of seasons in the NBA quite as Leonard has. Williams has actually been going in the opposite direction.

Since entering the league in 2020, all of his major statistical categories have gone down. His points per game in the Bull’s four games this season is a lowly 4.2. Less than half of what he averaged in his rookie season. The Bulls were expecting a big jump out of Williams this season. So far he has not lived up to the part, forcing Billy Donovan to use his bench early in often.

Patrick Williams doesn’t have an assist yet this season… https://t.co/AUHVlytHhI

Although he has started all four games this season, Williams’ minutes have gone down heavily from last season, dropping from 24.7 to 20.8 minutes per game according to BasketballReference.com.

Donovan sampled Patrick Williams coming off the bench during the preseason. It seems that might have to be the direction the Bulls go, especially if Derrick Jones Jr. and Javonte Green can continue to give them solid minutes.

To be fair to Patrick Williams, he has only played in 91 total games in his three-year career due to a handful of injuries, which is an entirely different problem for another day. I pull that stat out to say he essentially just finished his rookie season, meaning he still can develop into that player that many Bulls fans, including myself expect him to be.

But it is getting to that point where he needs to make some real progress and bring good minutes to the floor if the Bulls want to be contenders in a highly competitive Eastern Conference.

Too early to tell? Bulls’ Goran Dragić might be most underrated signing in the NBA.

Goran Dragic is slowly turning into a key player for the Chicago Bulls.

The Chicago Bulls did not have a lot of roster change-up from the 2021-2022 season, to this current one. In fact, the Bulls only added three new additions to the roster according to spotrac.com. Two of the signings were two-way contracts to Kostas Antetokounmpo and Malcolm Hill, while the other has slowly turned into one of the most underrated signings in the league.

Goran Dragić has made an immediate impact on the Bulls’ second unit and team in general.  Dragić has brought a multitude of benefits to the team. He brings an upgrade in 3-point shooting, of which he’s currently shooting 61.5%, good for 9th best in the NBA according to statmuse.com.

Chicago struggled with 3-point shooting last year, finishing 31st in the league in 3-pointers made last season. So, it’s a good sign to see a Bulls player knocking down threes at such a high rate, regardless that it’s only been five games.

Not only does Dragić bring a consistent three-point option off the bench, but he also brings a high-level IQ and leadership to the entire team. Dragić is a 14-year veteran in the league and has experienced nearly every possible scenario on the court. Being able to go to a point guard who can read defensive tendencies with ease, just makes the entire team around him better and it shows. Dragić has averaged 4.2 assists per game, which is 2nd best on the team only behind DeMar DeRozan.

Goran Dragic had a real effect on the Bulls bench mob especially. The bench play for Chicago was another main big struggle for the team last year, ranking 2nd worst in the league in average bench points with 27.2 according to statmuse.com The Bulls currently rank 7th this season in bench points, averaging 34.4 a seven point increase from last year.

Goran Dragic’s veteran leadership and overall understanding of the game has helped improve this Bulls team in ways not may would have expected when he was signed back in August.

The Bulls’ DeMar DeRozan looking to make history, share it with ‘Pop’

In one aspect, it was a premise that made DeMar DeRozan laugh out loud.

Then the Bulls veteran thought about it for a second, and was quickly swept over with the realization that it could actually be a possibility.

Needing only seven points Friday night in San Antonio to reach the 20,000-milestone mark for his career, he’ll have to do it against Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, who he played under for three seasons and considered the closest thing he’s had to an NBA father figure.

But what if “Pop” has other ideas, and throws a box-and-one at DeRozan on the defensive end to try and prevent it from happening?

“You know what’s crazy?” DeRozan said, as he laughed. “That’s something he would definitely do. That’s why if it happens, it’d be special against Pop. Soon as I get seven points I’m gonna go thank Pop.”

Throw the Spurs organization and the fan base in that list of thank you cards.

“That place will always be special for me,” DeRozan said. “Just the community as a whole, I’ll always remember my time there.”

Considering DeRozan never wanted to be there? Quite the change of opinion.

DeRozan was drafted by the Raptors back in 2009, and spent the first nine seasons in Toronto. In his mind, he never wanted to leave.

The organization, however, had different plans, and when the opportunity presented itself to acquire Kawhi Leonard from San Antonio, they jumped. An aggressive move that had an immediate pay-off, especially with Toronto winning the championship that season.

It left DeRozan distraught, however.

He’s told the story several times, but he was so upset when he was given the news of the deal that he had his driver pull over immediately, as he “sat in front of a Jack-in-the-Box for 40 minutes … I couldn’t believe it.”

But just when he felt like he was drowning, it was his new coach in San Antonio that not only provided a life preserver, but resurrected his career, both on the court and off of it.

“[Popovich] challenged me beyond my imagination on and off the court to develop, to be a better individual,” DeRozan said.

So it’s only fitting that the coach will likely be sharing the court with DeRozan when he reaches a scoring mark that he could have ever imagined achieving when he first came in the Association out of USC.

“I wanted to save it for Pop,” DeRozan said, half-joking. “Going back to a place that I spent some time, learned so much from, a place that embraced me, wasn’t nothing but love. And it was definitely a learning curve for me in my career at a critical time in my career … Pop really helped me a lot in my career. I think it’ll be cool to be able to do it there.”

And if he does, DeRozan would be joining elite company, becoming just the 54th NBA/ABA player to accomplish that feat.

A definite golden ticket to the Hall of Fame? Very likely.

“Just knowing the amount of players that played in this game for 75 years, it’s crazy.” DeRozan said. “Not too many people even get to that point. Some of my favorite players that I watched never even got to that point.

“When I got to the NBA, I wanted to be a guy that lasts and be around for a long time, but to be [at this scoring milestone] it would be something I never would have imagined.”

With only a box-and-one possibly slowing down the inevitable.

Bears OC: Justin Fields improving but ‘nowhere near where he wants to be’

Quarterback Justin Fields is getting better but still not close to where he wants to be — or where the Bears expect him to end up.

“I think it’s gotten better each week, and it needs to continue to get better because he’s nowhere near where he wants to be or where we want him to be,” offensive coordinator Luke Getsy said Thursday. “But it gets better each week. He gets more confident each week, not only in our relationship, our scheme, but being on the field and understanding what it looks like, what it feels like, coverages, fronts and all that stuff.

“I think just as he continues to get that experience, it will keep feeling better.”

Asked whether Monday night’s 33-14 win was Fields’ most complete game, Getsy steered the conversation toward steady improvement.

“I say this every week, right? But I truly think every week it just gets a little better,” he said. “I know there were only seven points against Washington, but it was probably one of our best execution games — until we got inside that 5-yard line, for some reason.”

Fields went 13-for-21 for 179 yards, one touchdown and one interception Monday night. He ran 14 times for a team-high 82 yards. Ten of his carries were designed runs.

Bears predictions: Week 8 at Cowboys

The Sun-Times’ experts offer their picks for the Bears’ game Sunday in Dallas:

RICK MORRISSEY

Cowboys, 17-13

Forget all that stuff I said last week about Bill Belichick having a plan for Justin Fields. Eighty-two Fields rushing yards later, it was apparent the old ball coach didn’t. The Cowboys don’t give up points or passing yards or many of the things opponents typically need for success. They do give up rushing yards, though. Hmmmm. Season: 4-3.

RICK TELANDER

Bears, 18-17

I’ve been wearing a hair shirt and crawling on my knees in penance for being so wrong about Bears-Patriots on Monday night. The Bears only beat the spread by 28 points, and it easily could have been 35. Are they decent or was that the luckiest game they’ll ever play? Send thoughts to oddsmakers everywhere. Season: 4-3.

LAURENCE HOLMES

Cowboys, 27-20

I can’t wait to see the speed of Fields vs. the speed of Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons. The Bears showed some real positive signs vs New England. It’ll be interesting how they handle success, with a short turnaround, against a better team. Season: 3-4.

PATRICK FINLEY

Cowboys, 23-10

The first round of the 2021 draft featured five quarterbacks, Ja’Marr Chase, Rashawn Slater and others, but there’s nobody I’d rather have than Parsons. He enters the week with 8 sacks — and will leave it with 10. Season: 3-4.

JASON LIESER

Cowboys, 24-13

This is a significant step up in competition for the Bears, and despite the promising victory against the Patriots, they aren’t ready for that yet. And Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott will only get better as he works back from injury. Season: 3-4.

MARK POTASH

Cowboys, 23-16

The Bears are on a high after beating the Patriots at Gillette Stadium. If Fields takes another step forward, they could pull off another upset. But that will be a tough chore against a Cowboys defense that ranks second in points and yards per play. Season: 4-3.
