Chicago Bulls Injury Report versus Brooklyn Nets

The Chicago Bulls have a growing list of players doubtful for Tuesday’s game versus the Brooklyn Nets.

Ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Brooklyn Nets, the Chicago Bulls are somewhat depleted as their latest injury report includes a number of names that make the team tick.

Backup center Andre Drummond, who is nursing a left shoulder sprain sustained in Friday’s loss to the San Antonio Spurs, was ruled out on the team’s latest injury report. It will be his second consecutive absence, in addition to Saturday’s loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.

In addition, Ayo Dosunmu, Zach LaVine and Coby White are all questionable for the Nets game.

Drummond’s injury is not thought to be serious by the Chicago Bulls medical staff, according to Coach Bill Donovan’s recent update, but his absence will be felt for however many games he misses. The Center averages 9 points, 10.2 rebounds and 1 steal while playing just 16.8 minutes per game this season, stabilizing a second string frontcourt that runs small without him.

Dosunmu, meanwhile, suffered a thoracic contusion after taking a hard fall in the third quarter of the Spurs game. He, like Drummond, missed the 76ers game Saturday, but unlike Drummond, practiced with the Bulls on Monday.

LaVine being listed on the injury report continues an early-season trend for back-to-back sets as he manages his left knee, which underwent surgery in the offseason and experienced soreness in the wake of the preseason. Donovan said Monday the team has not yet formalized how they will manage this week’s back-to-back at Brooklyn on Tuesday then home for the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday.

White’s injury, a left quadricep contusion, is a fresh addition to the report. He is averaging 21.9 minutes off the bench so far this season, but is of increased importance in the game’s LaVine or Dosunmu miss.

The Chicago Bulls enter Tuesday’s game 3-4, while the Nets’ 2-5 record places them ahead of the Miami Heat, Detroit Pistons and the 1-6 Orlando Magic in the Eastern Conference standings.

White Sox to hire Royals’ Pedro Grifol as manager, replacing Tony La Russa

The White Sox will name Royals bench coach Pedro Grifol as their manager, a club source confirmed Tuesday.

The announcement is expected Friday.

Grifol, 52, has worked for the Royals as their bench coach and quality control and catching coach. He was in the Mariners organization before that, including time as a manager and director of Seattle’s minor league operations.

A former catcher, Grifol played nine seasons in the minor leagues, including five as a catcher in the Twins’ system and four with the Mets. The highest level he reached was Triple-A.

Grifol, who interviewed with the Marlins this offseason, also interviewed with the Tigers, Giants and Orioles in previous seasons. He was a candidate for the Royals’ manager job, but Kansas City hired Rays bench coach Matt Quatraro Sunday.

Grifol will replace Tony La Russa, who stepped down due to health reasons after two seasons at age 78. He takes over after the Sox finished 81-81 in one of their most disappointing seasons.

The Sox are expected to make changes in their coaching and training staffs as well. Pitching coach Ethan Katz is expected to return.

The Sox’ search lasted four weeks and included an interview with former manager Ozzie Guillen last week.

Grifol, who is bilingual, was born and raised in Miami. He will be the first Sox manager hired from outside the organization since Jerry Manuel in 1997. Since then, they have been managed by Guillen, Robin Ventura, Rick Renteria and La Russa.

Pedro Grifol is expected to be the next manager of the Chicago White Sox, an announcement that could come later this week, according to multiple sources.

Grifol, 52, has been on the staff of the Kansas City Royals since 2013, most recently as the bench coach. The Royals interviewed him recently for their managerial opening but hired Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Matt Quatraro to fill that spot.

Grifol was born and raised in Miami and played collegiately at Florida State University before nine seasons in the minors, reaching Triple-A.

Tony La Russa began his second stint as manager of the White Sox for the 2021 season, at the behest of owner Jerry Reinsdorf, and the team made the playoffs. But the White Sox had a disappointing showing in 2022, finishing at .500 and out of the playoffs. La Russa, 78, was sidelined because of his health late in the year, with Miguel Cairo serving as the interim manager. At season’s end, the White Sox announced that La Russa would not return as manager for next year.

Cairo, Houston Astros bench coach Joe Espada and New York Yankees bench coach Carlos Mendoza were among those who interviewed for the White Sox vacancy.

Is Ryan Poles and evil genius or is he going to destroy the 2022 Bears?

Ryan Poles is going for broke in the teardown of Ryan Pace’s old Chicago Bears team.

Ryan Poles traded Khalil Mack, Robert Quinn, and now Roquan Smith.  It appears no one is safe no matter how valuable they may appear to Bears fans.  With Smith being the latest player traded it’s time to evaluate what Poles may do next and what he’ll also be doing during the 2023 offseason.

The Bears are rumored to not be finished trading players

David Montgomery and Teven Jenkins are still a possibility to be traded according to NBC Sports Chicago.  The new regime still hasn’t given much praise to Jenkins despite what he’s done.  Jenkins moved from right tackle to right guard and has become the Bears’ best offensive lineman this season.

No one should be advocating for the Bears to move Jenkins, but the rumors persist that Jenkins may be gone.  Ryan Poles may have more faith in the players he drafted in Ja’Tyre Carter Zachary Thomas and Doug Kramer three interior offensive line prospects

David Montgomery has 92 carries and 361 yards in a contract year.  Khalil Herbert his back up has 91 carries and 563 yards.  Montgomery’s remaining value is as a blocker that helps pick up blitzes or fix mistakes by someone else along the offensive line.  Trestan Ebner looks like a decent backup option with Herbert as the starter.  If Montgomery gets moved it may not be for more than a fifth-round pick at this point.

Where do the Bears stand with 2023 draft picks and what’s next?

The Bears have been adding draft picks with these trades so where do they currently stand?

Bears 2023 draft picks:
1st round (own)
2nd round (own)
2nd round (Ravens)
3rd round (own)
4th round (own)
4th round (Eagles)
5th round (own)
5th round (Ravens)
7th round (own)
Plus over $100M in salary cap space to upgrade the roster.

This doesn’t even begin to cover the next moves Ryan Poles is likely to make.  The Bears have their franchise quarterback, and they are going to try and bottom out in the draft.  This means on draft day Ryan Poles is going to be getting phone calls from teams who need a QB and are going to need to move up to the Bears’ draft spot to get one.  I would put the odds that the Bears add another first-round pick and an additional second in the 2023 draft at least 50-50 as it stands today.

That’s a nearly ideal scenario for the Bears being able to add minimally two more first-round picks to an already stacked pick list and over $120-million in cap space.  The Bears couldn’t be in a better position to add talent and begin the process of building with players that Ryan Poles picks.

It may be a rough last two months to the NFL season, but the payoff for the Bears in free agency and draft capital could be huge if Ryan Poles plays his cards right, and there’s no reason to believe he isn’t holding pocket aces.

Managerial Search : Carlos Mendoza to interview with White Sox

Per Jon Heyman, the White Sox have received permission to interview Yankees’ bench coach Carlos Mendoza.

The Chicago White Sox organization have secured permissions to interview Yankees bench coach Carlos Mendoza in their managerial search, reports Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

It is not clear whether Mendoza has already sat down with Chicago brass or is planning to in the coming days, but he marks a new entrant into the mix.

Mendoza, 42, has spent more than a decade in the coaching ranks. A Venezuela native, he began his career as a player in the Giants system back in 1997. He played professionally for 12 years in the San Francisco and Yankees organizations, briefly topping out at Triple-A.

He transitioned into coaching in the New York farm system, spending the 2011-12 seasons at the lower levels of the organization, and worked his way onto the MLB coaching staff by 2018.

White Sox got permission to interview Yankees bench coach Carlos Mendoza for manager opening. White Sox search has been mostly a mystery. Ozzie Guillen, Ron Washington and Joe Espada have been mentioned but none of those 3 are seen now as especially likely.

Mendoza has, over the past five seasons, worked on manager Aaron Boone’s staff, breaking in as an infield instructor and was bumped up to bench coach going into the 2020 campaign.

The White Sox are the only team without a manager currently in place. Tony La Russa held the position for the past two years, but he stepped away from the team late in the season due to health concerns and subsequently announced he wouldn’t return to the role in 2023.

The south-side team has interviewed bench coach Miguel Cairo (who served as interim manager for the stretch run while La Russa was out), Royals bench coach Pedro Grifol, Astros bench coach Joe Espada and former Chicago bench boss Ozzie Guillén. They have also been tied to Braves third base coach Ron Washington, although it is not known if both parties officially sat down at any point.

Chicago will likely wait until the World Series is over at this point before making a managerial decision. But with the GM Winter Meetings just a week after the World Series ends, the club will likely look to make a decision before then.

Bears never fell in love with Roquan Smith

Trading Roquan Smith was unthinkable before Ryan Poles and Matt Eberflus were hired, but a distinct possibility almost from the moment they entered the door at Halas Hall.

At the time, Smith was the best thing the Bears had going for them as the Ryan Pace/Matt Nagy era ended in January –a two-time All-Pro linebacker, yet still considered overshadowed and underrated, and still only 24.

He was the kind of proven star a general manager and coach inheriting a bad roster but eager to accentuate the positive could have hung his hat on in the opening press conference for Poles and Eberflus in January.

But given the opportunity to gush about the most accomplished player on their roster, both Poles and Eberflus passed. Poles didn’t even mention a single player. Eberflus lumped Smith in with the rest.

“There’s a lot of guys that excite me. Roquan is one of them,” Eberflus said when asked the roster he was inheriting in general and Smith in particular.

It was the first sign the Bears’ new management was not as enamored with Smith the same way those who had watched him play in four seasons with the Bears were. They liked him, but didn’t love him, which put them at odds with Smith from the start.

That difference of opinion continued during a contentious offseason negotiation for a long-term contract that was complicated by Smith representing himself without an agent. And then through a training camp “hold-in” that turned acrimonious when Smith demanded a trade and accused Poles of negotiating in bad faith — the low-point of a “distasteful” process that left Smith feeling bitter, unloved and under-appreciated.

And even into the season, where Smith ended up playing middle linebacker when he was presumed to be playing the weak side linebacker position in Eberflus defense that made Shaquille Leonard a $19.8 million a year star.

The dam broke Monday when Poles traded Smith to the Ravens for a 2023 second-round draft pick (currently No. 57 overall), a 2023 fifth-round draft pick (currently No. 162) and 31-year-old veteran linebacker A.J. Klein, a former starter with the Bills whom the Ravens signed off the Giants practice squad in Week 5.

The Bears also agreed to pay $4.833 million of the $5.4 million left on Smith’s 2022 salary. They really didn’t want to pay this guy $20 million a year.

And that’s why Roquan Smith is no longer a Bear. He drove a hard bargain — all the way to Baltimore. The headstrong 2018 first-round draft pick (No. 8 overall) — the NFL leader in tackles this season — vowed to bet on himself and become the highest-paid inside linebacker in football. And the Bears didn’t think he deserved it. Until further notice, it’s as simple as that.

It might turn out to be the prudent move, but for now it’s a bad look. Chicago cherishes defense and worshipslinebackers and Smith was the latest in a lineage of All-Pro players at that position — from George Connor to Bill George to Dick Butkus to Mike Singletary to Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs.

Truth be told, he is closer to Briggs than Urlacher at this stage of his career — more of a highly potent tackle machine than a destructive game-changing Hall of Fame. His 2022 season was typical of the conundrum the Bears faced. Smith leads the NFL with 83 tackles and has 2.5 sacks and two interceptions.

You could point to those numbers and say he’s winning his bet. Or you could point to the quiet five-tackle game against the Cowboys on Sunday, when he was unable to rise above the muck of a poor overall defensive performance and see why the Bears didn’t want to pay him $20 million a year.

That’s been the theme of the entire Roquan episode. Smith had every reason to think he should be the highest-paid inside linebacker in football –he’s accomplished and still young. And Poles has a case for not splurging on an off-the-ball linebacker who — even if he is the best inside linebacker in football — is not a dominant, destructive, $20 million-a-year force.

We’ll see what happens. And it’s not without risk for Poles. Smith figures to flourish in a Ravens defense that has a history of maximizing talented linebackers. And the Bears defense, which allowed 42 points to the Cowboys with Smith on Sunday, isn’t likely to be better without him. Who will replace Smith in the middle? Somebody who doesn’t want $20 million year. Other than that, it doesn’t really matter.

And that’s the point. Smith might be worth $20 million to somebody, but not to Ryan Poles, Matt Eberflus and the Bears. They’ll fill his hole with a workmanlike player and invest that $20 million in a position that can make a bigger difference — a defensive tackle, a defensive end or a wide receiver. That’s their plan and they’re sticking to it.

Smith embraced the legacy of the great linebackers who preceded him, but wanted to be a Bear for life at his price and not the Bears’. So now he gets his wish, “to play for an organization that truly values what I bring to the table.” But it remains to be seen if both sides will come out ahead.

Blockbuster Bears Trade Nets Former 2-Time First-Team All-Big 12 LB

Monday’s Bears trade sends the team a former 5th-round pick

Roquan Smith is now a Baltimore Ravens linebacker. The former Chicago Bears All-Pro linebacker was rumored to be on the trading block before Tuesday’s deadline. The Bears trade will save the team money in the future and will give the team draft capital in the short term future. A second and fifth-round pick will be valuable to a team that needs help all over the roster.

One of the pieces the Bears received in the trade is linebacker A.J. Klein. Klein was a former Carolina Panthers’ 2013 fifth-round selection. He has spent time with the New Orleans Saints, Buffalo Bills, New York Giants, and Baltimore Ravens before the Bears trade Monday.

Klein played college football for the Iowa State Cyclones. He was a two-time first-team All-Big 12 honoree during his time at Iowa State. Klein has started 81 games in his NFL career. He’s recorded 454 total tackles, four interceptions, and eight fumble recoveries during his time in the league.

Klein has a 54.2 overall rating for the 2022 season by Pro Football Focus. That’s a higher rating than PFF has for Smith this season (50.8). Smith has seen a lot more snaps this season than Klein. Klein has 18 total defensive snaps in two games for the Ravens.

Here are some highlights of Klein:
