Suns wallop Bulls, courtesy of Devin Booker’s 51-point explosion

PHOENIX — Bulls guard Zach LaVine didn’t flinch when discussing his recent shooting slump.

And why should he? He’s from the school of ”shooters gotta shoot,” and he graduated summa cum laude.

”I’m confident in what I do,” LaVine said. ”I work at it every single day, and it’s coming. I’m going to keep taking those shots, and pretty soon I’ll be back to doing what I do.”

It didn’t happen Wednesday against the Suns and guard Devin Booker.

All Booker did was steal the show, scoring 51 points in three quarters, as the Bulls (9-12) were throttled 132-113.

As for LaVine, he continued to be very un-LaVine-like in his shooting, going a respectable 7-for-15 from the field but only 1-for-6 from three-point range.

In the eight games leading into the matchup against the Suns — perhaps LaVine’s worst shooting slump in years — he had shot 57-for-153 (37%) from the field and 21-for-72 (29%) from three-point range. He had been even worse late in games, shooting only 17-for-49 (34.7%) in the fourth quarter, including 8-for-28 (28.6%) from three-point range.

To put that in perspective, during his breakout All-Star season in 2020-21, LaVine shot 50.7% from the field and 41.9% from three-point range and averaged 27.4 points.

That seemed like a long time ago with the way he had shot the ball through the second half of November.

In LaVine’s defense, he did have surgery on his left knee last spring — before the Bulls signed him to a five-year, $215 million max contract — so his usual summer workout program was compromised. But there’s also more going on than just rust.

LaVine had been asked about missing bunnies at the rim and his overall inconsistency several times this season and would give a generic answer about ”getting closer.”

He went into more detail about the topic when he was asked specifically whether it was mental or physical obstacles that he still was dealing with.

”It’s just timing,”’ LaVine said. ”Nothing mental. I didn’t get to play — didn’t get to shoot — as much as I usually do [in the offseason], but it’s coming. It’s timing. There’s stretches I’m feeling like my old self and then other stretches where I’m trying to get that timing right.

”But I’m not going to be too hard on myself. It’s frustrating because I don’t expect to be shooting like this. I hold myself to an extremely high standard. But I’ve got to understand that for me to get out of this, I’ve got to stay confident and continue to take my shots. I know that. I work too hard at this, so it’s going to come through and I’ll be getting back to what I do.”

The problem Wednesday was a defense that allowed Booker to do what he does.

Like LaVine, Booker signed a contract extension during the summer, but his was a super-max deal that will pay him $224 million over four years.

All Booker did in the first half against the Bulls was go 10-for-14 from the field for 25 points. He then went 10-for-11 and scored 26 points in the third quarter.

”[Booker] got too much in a rhythm, and when a guy like that gets hot, it’s too late,” LaVine said. ”He gets it going, and it’s over.”

Even with coach Billy Donovan trying everything he could to slow Booker down.

”We threw everything at him,” Donovan said. ”We trapped him, threw a box-and-one at him. He really, really got it going.”

Donovan’s hope is that LaVine can follow suit — and soon.

Insider links Chicago Bulls to Kevin Durant in trade rumors

Kevin Durant is a name that is brought up by a Bulls beat writer in terms of a dream trade

The 2022-23 NBA season hasn’t started off on the right foot for the Chicago Bulls, and recently the team has been subject of trade rumors.

Most of those rumors involve the Bulls blowing it up and trading away DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine, Coby White, Nikola Vucevic and more. That would usher in a rebuild in the Windy City, which is something the franchise may not want to do.

But on Wednesday, a Bulls insider had a suggestion that the team should key in on one superstar player — Kevin Durant.

Bulls reporter Sam Smith talked about the Bulls and recent wins over the Bucks and Celtics in his mailbag from November 25th. In there, he mentions that he’d make a run at a player like Kevin Durant if he was available:

“The Nets remain the ground zero of the NBA with star players and average results. They’re always one losing streak (or Durant crisis of conscience) from that new direction. There seems no way they bring back free agent Irving after this season, and though Ben Simmons has played better of late, that guy from a few years ago seems gone. Durant is just starting his last best four years of his career with a new contract. If he’s there and I’m the Bulls, I’m all in unless they believe they have a title team now,”

Interesting.

Now, this doesn’t say that the Bulls will indeed pursue him but more that he would take a chance on Durant if he’s there.

Either way, the Bulls are going to have to make some decisions in the coming months with this roster.

High school basketball: Sophomore Anthony Demirov’s late heroics help Crystal Lake South beat Dundee-Crown

Anthony Demirov is just a sophomore, but he has the scoring ability to carry his team for a crucial quarter and the confidence and resolve to knock down free throws with the game on the line.

Demirov’s two free throws with 0.8 seconds left gave Crystal Lake South a 41-39 win against Dundee-Crown on Wednesday in Carpentersville.

“My teammates were hyping me up and telling me to go hit the free throws to win the game,” Demirov said. “It gave me a lot of confidence.”

Demirov finished with a game-high 21 points. He scored all 10 of the Gators’ points in the fourth quarter.

“My teammates did a good job of creating shots for me and [Crystal Lake South coach Matt LePage told me to keep shooting,” Demirov said.

The Gators (5-0, 1-0 Fox Valley) led 19-6 early and 31-23 late in the third quarter but Dundee-Crown’s big man duo of 6-8 Kuba Senczyszyn (13 points, nine rebounds) and 6-6 Tyler DiSilvio (nine points, five rebounds) led an energetic rebounding effort the got the Chargers (1-3, 0-1) back in the game.

Kali Freeman’s steal and basket with 1:26 to play pulled Dundee-Crown within two points and two free throws from DiSilvio tied the game with 56 seconds to play.

The Chargers inbounded the ball after Demirov’s free throws but weren’t able to get a shot off.

“[Demirov] shoots a little over 90 percent [from the free-throw line] so it was the right guy in that spot,” LePage said. “Between him and [Cooper LePage] one of them had to make a play there in the closing seconds and he [Demirov] had the ball and saw a little window and took it to the basket.”

Dundee-Crown’s Kuba Senczyszyn (5) drives down the lane against Crystal Lake South.

Allen Cunningham/For the Sun-Times

Cooper LePage, Matt’s son, is a four-year varsity player for the Gators. He’s signed with Northern Michigan. The senior finished with 11 points and five rebounds.

“We all trusted [Demirov] at the end and he came up big,” Cooper LePage said. “That’s just the start. He’s going to be a very good player.”

Junior Zach Randi contributed eight points for Dundee-Crown and Freeman finished with six points, five rebounds and three steals.

“We’ve played five close games and we have five wins,” Matt LePage said. “That’s a good thing but we are just taking it game by game. We have a lot of experience but also a lot of new guys.

“Burlington Central hasn’t lost a conference game in 27 or 28 games. So until they get beat it is their conference. That’s the way I look at it. But I think it will be a balanced conference this year and you know, a win on the road at Dundee-Crown is big for us.”

Progress of Bulls point guard Lonzo Ball in his knee rehab remains slow

PHOENIX – Billy Donovan would have loved nothing more than actually giving a positive update on point guard Lonzo Ball on Wednesday.

Unfortunately for the Bulls coach, there just aren’t a whole lot of those right now.

While there’s been no setbacks for Ball and his recovery from a second left knee surgery back in September, the progress forward also remained very slow.

Enough so that Donovan said, “To be honest with you, there’s a lot of people that have tried to wrap their head around this in terms of trying to figure it out.”

The “figuring out” part remained the pain that Ball was still experiencing in the knee as they try and move him along through the rehabilitation.

Last month, the update was Ball was at least on a treadmill in the water, but a source told the Sun-Times that when they’ve tried to get him beyond that onto the next steps, the pain has persisted.

Not exactly what the organization was hoping for when they acquired Ball in a sign-and-trade, and now haven’t seen him play in a game since Jan. 14.

“It’s not like I can give you any report, ‘Hey, he’s running, he’s cutting, he’s jumping, he’s doing individual skill work, the next step is we’ve got to get him some contact.’ ” Donovan said. “To be honest with you we’re not even close to that.”

What Donovan would rule out is the organization having a set date in which they just shut Ball down for the season. Like last year, Ball is still 100% committed to try and return to the court as soon as possible, even with the slow progress.

“I haven’t been a part of any discussions like that at all,” Donovan said, when discussing shutting Ball down. “It’s been more about how to get him back on the floor to where he’s playing. We haven’t gotten that far. I feel bad for him because I feel like he’s worked hard to try and get back. He’s a young guy, he’s a really good player, and you hate to see a guy – I guess it’s another month or so, right, that’s coming up on a year? I hurt for him because he’s a great guy, he loves playing, and when something like that is taken away from a guy you feel bad for him.”

While Ayo Dosunmu has done a solid job trying to fill Ball’s spot in the starting lineup, he simply can’t duplicate what Ball does. Few can. Not only is Ball the team’s best two-way player, causing havoc on the defensive end, but his ability to rebound and push the ball up the floor is visibly missed.

“He has his mind, his heart, everything set on getting himself back this year,” Donovan said. “But there’s no timetable. That’s where he’s at mentally. That’s what he’s working towards. I have no timetable for it. But if it gets so far into the year, there’s that [shutting him down]. But there’s also a piece to a guy being out and getting some games under his belt to getting back to playing.”

Contract talk

Donovan was still discussing the secret contract extension the Bulls signed him to back in the fall, and had a very honest answer when asked if he felt he deserved to get an extension.

“I don’t know if anybody deserves anything,” Donovan said. “I never have. I always looked at it the other way, I looked at it as being fortunate to have an opportunity to go to work every single day.”

Denver Broncos sign former Bears cornerback to practice squad

The Denver Broncos signed a former Bears player

The Denver Broncos are having a difficult season. The Broncos are on the receiving end of a deal the Chicago Bears tried to make under general manager Ryan Pace. Betting the farm on the unstable arm of Russell Wilson hasn’t worked out for the Broncos. Their inability to score points will likely get first-year head coach Nathaniel Hackett fired, as the Broncos’ record sits at 3-8 before Week 13.

Like most NFL teams, the Broncos are dealing with injuries during the long 18-week NFL season. They’ve had injuries in their secondary. According to the NFL’s transaction wire, the Broncos signed former Bears cornerback Lamar Jackson this week. Jackson was signed by the Jets in 2020 undrafted rookie free agent. The Bears signed Jackson to a reserve/future contract this offseason. The Bears waived Jackson this past week.

Even with several injuries in the secondary, Jackson couldn’t make the Bears’ active roster. The Bears have since added a cornerback to the practice squad.

With the Bears in his sights, Aaron Rodgers feeling ‘pretty good’

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Where Aaron Rodgers once new names — Urlacher, Briggs, Peanut, Pep … Khalil, Danny, Akiem, Roquan — he only knows numbers with this Bears defense.

“They still have a lot of talented players — I think 33 is one of the top corners in the league,” Rodgers said, referring to cornerback Jaylon Johnson. “They’ve got a couple of young guys in the secondary [rookies Kyler Gordon and Jaquan Brisker] who’ve been battling injuries, but when they’re playing, they seem to be playing better. Ninety-nine [Trevis Gipson] is a real solid end, rush guy off the edge. It’s a talented group. They’re simplifying things probably for them, but they’re still professionals.”

Once upon a time, Rodgers loved the chess matches with Brian Urlacher and enjoyed the personal rivalries he developed with Lance Briggs, Peanut Tillman, Khalil Mack, Akiem Hicks and other established stars of the Bears defense.

Not so much this week. With Robert Quinn and Roquan Smith traded and safety Eddie Jackson on injured reserve with a foot injury, the Bears have a cast of young, nondescript defenders that Rodgers has little to no rapport with.

But one thing hasn’t changed. “I always enjoy playing against the Bears,” Rodgers said.

Therein likes at least part of Rodgers motivation as he tries to recover from a rib injury that forced him out of the Packers’ loss to the Eagles last week and put his season in jeopardy. The Packers are 4-8. Rodgers is 38. But the notion of missing a game is the last thing on his mind.

“Pride, for one,” he said. “Love of the game. They’re paying me to play. A lot of different issues. I love to compete and want to be out there with my guys.”

And the chance to beat the Bears at Soldier Field — maybe for the last time — is an elixir right up there with “my herbs and teas and all the other things” as a healing agent for Rodgers.

“For sure,” Rodgers said. “It was back in 2013 and still is today in 2022.”

Of course, Rodgers remembers 2013. How can anyone forget it? It looked like the Bears had vanquished their nemesis when Shea McClellin broke Rodgers’ collarbone in the first quarter in Week 9 at Lambeau. Rodgers missed the next seven games — the Packers went 2-5-1 without him.

The Bears under Marc Trestman stumbled just enough to give Rodgers hope — and that was all it took. With the NFC North Division championship on the line in Week 17, Rodgers returned and overcome some rust to throw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Randall Cobb with 38 seconds left to lead the 8-7-1 Packers to the playoffs, burnish Rodgers’ legend and crush the Bears’ soul. It wasn’t the first time. And wouldn’t be the last. Rodgers is 24-5 against the Bears in his 29 career starts, including 11-3 at Soldier Field.

So here we are again, with Rodgers nursing what he hinted was rib cartilage damage similar to what Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert had earlier this season. But all expectations are that Rodgers will play Sunday. He usually does in these situations.

Rodgers did not practice Wednesday, but was encouraged enough by some light work (“I was tossing the ball around and felt pretty good”) to practice Thursday — though, let’s face it, Rodgers could get out of traction on Saturday and beat the Bears on Sunday.

Packers coach Matt LaFleur said he is expecting Rodgers to start. He’s not surprised Rodgers is going all out to do that.

“It just speaks to how competitive he is and how much he’s invested in the game, [and] this team, regardless of the circumstances,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said.

Indeed, the circumstances aren’t what they were in 2013. Rodgers is unlikely to spark a Packers’ late-season rally with a victory — though you can’t put anything past him. And Rodgers can’t crush the Bears’ soul this time. On the contrary, beating the Bears at this point could actually help them, if it pushes them into a difference-making player in the draft.

But that’s not Aaron Rodgers’ concern. He always wants to beat the Bears.

“I’ve enjoyed the rivalry over the years and have been a part of a ton of these games,” Rodgers said. “This is the 37th one I’ll be a part of and I’ve enjoyed all of them. It’s a great rivalry. Been around for a long time. Happy to be on this side of it. A lot of good memories of Soldier Field.”

Chicago Bulls at Phoenix Suns: 1 Best Bet

The Chicago Bulls continue their Western Conference road trip as they travel to Phoenix as betting underdogs.

After a back and forth battle, the Chicago Bulls jumped back into the win column on Monday with a 114-107 victory over the Utah Jazz. Former Bull, Lauri Markkanen gave Chicago a run for their money with 32 points, shooting 7-11 from behind the 3-point line.

Tonight’s game will be a different test, as they travel to Phoenix to face a Suns team that stands atop the Western Conference at 14-6, and having won their last five games. Contrary to last season, the Chicago Bulls have had success against the league’s top teams this season.

The injury report is light for Chicago tonight, as Ayo Dosunmu and Alex Caruso are listed as probable, however for Phoenix, the Suns will be without Chris Paul and Cameron Johnson. Both players have been absent dating back to early November.

As for the best bet of the day, I’ve got a bone to pick with this Bulls team and the second half usage of Nikola Vucevic. Two games in a row, Vucevic has hit double digit scoring in the first half against two bottom five teams in points per paint allowed, and have totally abandoned the strategy in the second half.

Of course, Monday’s game against the Jazz ended positively, but the lack of usage in those situations remains bizarre. I’ll be going away from him tonight as the Suns rank near the top of the league in points in the paint allowed, but of course as soon as I jump away from him, he’ll drop 20 on my head.

Nonetheless, I am happy with the effort and defensive boost that this team has shown over the last week, and think we could see more of the same tonight. Best of luck tonight, see red, and GO BULLS!!

2022 Bulls Best Bet Record: 9-11 (2L Streak)Last Pick: Vucevic Over 16.5 – L

Chicago Bulls +5.5 (Sportsbook odds may vary)

The strategy for tonight’s game is going to be betting on some expected regression for the Phoenix Suns. After a five game winning streak, and now standing on top of the Western Conference, while also facing a currently losing team in the Chicago Bulls, this line seems fairly short to me.

In cases like these where I personally believe the line is too good to be true for that favored team, I also like to get some confirmation with public bias. Betting against the public is not always a strategy to play, but when you couple it with a line that seems fairly short, it can be successful. In tonight’s case we have about 70% of bettors playing the Phoenix Suns at home tonight.

I like the Chicago Bulls’ chances of winning tonight, but at the very least, I believe they have a great opportunity to keep this game close. As mentioned in the intro, this Bulls defense has really improved and with Chris Paul out of this game, the focal point will be slowing down Devin Booker, and forcing him to score entirely by creating his own shot.

During the Suns’ win streak and in the absence of Chris Paul, Deandre Ayton has been extremely efficient scoring in the paint, but looking back, a large portion of that work is against some of the worst teams in the league at defending big men. The Bulls certainly aren’t the tops of the league in that category, but are far more serviceable than Phoenix’s recent opponents.

The Bulls will need to find consistent offense themselves, but I think the story tonight will be the Suns showing some offensive struggles finally in Chris Paul’s absence.

Against the spread, the Chicago Bulls have had success in Phoenix over the past few seasons, as they are 9-3 in their last 12 meetings on the road against the Suns.

I think we see a nice showing from the Bulls defense, and a solid chance of ending the Suns’ five game win streak. Take the Bulls and the points, let’s see some red, and GO BULLS!!

Bears notebook: Injuries abound as practice for Packers game begins

Leading up to their stunning win at the Patriots in Week 7, the Bears put out an injury report every day, but only because it was mandatory. Each day, all it said was “no injuries to report.”

It was a rare, blissful week.

This is the opposite.

As quarterback Justin Fields continues working through a separated non-throwing shoulder, the Bears began the week by putting mainstays Darnell Mooney and Eddie Jackson on injured reserve.

Mooney needs surgery on his ankle, and the Bears aren’t sure yet whether Jackson will need surgery on the Lisfranc injury in his foot. Those two are done for the season.

If only the trouble ended there.

The Bears opened practice Wednesday for the Packers game with nine players — many of them key — limited or out of practice.

Both of their second-round picks — safety Jaquan Brisker and cornerback Kyler Gordon — were still in the concussion protocol from hits they took in Week 11 against the Falcons.

The other problem in the secondary is that starting cornerback Kindle Vildor was limited by an ankle injury.

Offensively, they ended the last game without a right tackle after starter Riley Reiff and backup Larry Borom got hurt. Reiff remained out with a back injury Wednesday, but Borom was able to partially practice through ankle and knee issues.

That could open the door for former first-round pick Alex Leatherwood to make his debut.

Leatherwood starred at left tackle for Alabama, leading the Raiders to draft him No. 17 overall last year. When he struggled in training camp, they moved him to right guard for his rookie season. He started every game there, but the Raiders had seen enough and waived him at the roster deadline this year.

Leatherwood declined to talk to the media Wednesday.

Whoever plays quarterback behind that line will need someone to throw to, and the options could be slim. Wide receiver Chase Claypool was limited by the knee injury he suffered against the Jets, and Dante Pettis was out with an injury.

The only receivers who were full-go for practice Wednesday were Equanimeous St. Brown (14 catches) Byron Pringle (five), N’Keal Harry (four) and rookie Velus Jones (three).

Jones developing

When general manager Ryan Poles bypassed wide receivers with both of his second-round picks this year and took Jones in the third, the Bears needed him to make an immediate contribution.

Due to injuries and inconsistency, though, that hasn’t happened. It got bad enough for Jones that he was a healthy scratch in Weeks 9 and 10, but he practiced well enough to get another chance.

Jones has gotten 20 snaps over the last two games and got two carries for six yards against the Jets. It sounds like he’ll be even more involved this week as coach Matt Eberflus credited him for being “really better” at knowing his assignments.

“That’s why he’s seeing more touches and seeing more [snaps],” he said. “He’s an explosive player, and we want to get him involved.”

Insiders

With the wind hitting 20 miles per hour Wednesday, the Bears opted to practice indoors. Eberflus said he wanted to replicate the anticipated game conditions — the forecast shows a high of 39 degrees with no unusual wind Sunday — so practicing in high winds wouldn’t be productive. They expect to practice outside Thursday and Friday.

Chicago Bears workout former All-SEC defensive back in Week 13

The Chicago Bears took a look at a former Lions DB

The Chicago Bears’ secondary looked bad last week. The Bears gave up over 300 yards to Mike White in his first start for the New York Jets in Week 12. The Bears had several starters out in the secondary before the game. Bears safety Eddie Jackson was injured during the game and was placed on the injured reserve this week.

The Bears needed to look at possible players to add to the roster depth in the secondary. According to Aaron Wilson with KPRC, the Bears worked out defensive backs J.R. Reed and Richard LeCounte III. Both defenders played in college at Georgia.

— Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) November 29, 2022

J.R. Reed made the All-SEC team in 2019. He went undrafted in 2020. Reed was signed by Jacksonville Jaguars as a UDFA. He was most recently released by the Detroit Lions this season.

The Bears currently have several defensive backs not at practice for Wednesday with injuries. The Bears have not signed Reed or LeCounte yet. The Bears did sign defensive back Adrian Colbert this week.
