Bears’ Justin Fields breaks Bobby Douglass’ franchise record for QB rushing

Bears quarterback Justin Fields set a new franchise record on his 39-yard run in the second quarter against the Eagles, eclipsing Bobby Douglass’ mark that stood for 50 years.

Fields had 71 yards on eight carries after that run, putting him at 976 yards rushing for the season.

Douglass set the record at a time when the NFL schedule was 14 games, compared to 17 now, but Fields broke it in the Bears’ 14th game (he has played 13).

Fields is the NFL’s leading rusher among quarterbacks and went into the Eagles game needing just 63 yards to match the 968 Douglass ran for in 1972. He entered the game averaging a league-best 7.1 yards per carry.

Douglass had two 100-yard games that season and averaged 69.1 per game. Fields went into the Eagles game averaging 75.4, which put him on pace for 1,206 yards — the exact number the Ravens’ Lamar Jackson ran for in his 2019 MVP season to set the all-time record by a quarterback.

If Fields hits 1,000 yards, he’ll be the third quarterback to do so, joining Jackson (2019 and ’20) and Michael Vick (2006).

Justin Fields’ ridiculous run has Bears trailing Eagles 10-6 at halftime

Quarterback Justin Fields is getting little help from a banged-up Bears offense. Still, though, the Bears went into halftime trailing the Eagles, the best team in the NFL, by only four points.

Behind one of his most ridiculous runs of the season — a 39-yard scramble in which he ducked under a sure sack and sprinted up the left sideline on second-and-27 — Fields has the Bears are down 10-6 at halftime at Soldier Field.

Fields’ run set up the Bears’ only score. One play after the scramble — Fields had reached the end zone but officials ruled his left foot stepped out at the 9 — he handed off to David Montgomery for a nine-yard touchdown. Bears kicker Cairo Santos missed yet another extra point. Bizarrely, he’s missed five of them this season — and two in the last two games — while missing only two field goals all year.

Fields’ run made him the Bears’ single-season rushing leader for a quarterback, passing Bobby Douglass, who had 968 yards in 1972.

The Bears defense has at times baffled the league’s best passing offense, too. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts threw a first-quarter interception to rookie cornerback Kyler Gordon, who returned from concussion protocol, and a second-quarter pick to veteran safety DeAndre Houston-Carson.

The Eagles’ lone touchdown came on a 22-yard Hurts run with 43 seconds to play in the half. He took a shotgun snap and sprinted up the middle, untouched, while safety Jaquan Brisker blitzed a different gap. Both the touchdown and the Eagles’ field goal earlier in the quarter were set up by long catches by receiver De’Vonta Smith. He has three catches for 104 yards.

Fields is playing without four of his top six wide receivers. Darnell Mooney is out for the season with an ankle injury, Chase Claypool was ruled out Friday with a knee problem and N’Keal Harry was scratched Sunday because of a bad back. Equanimeous St. Brown was concussed after catching a third-down pass in the first quarter and is out for the game. The Bears also lost starting right guard Teven Jenkins to a neck injury; he was put on a backboard and carted off the field early in the first quarter.

High school basketball: Michael O’Brien’s Super 25 rankings for Dec. 18, 2022

It was a calm week overall and that led to just a mild shakeup near the end of the Super 25.

Bolingbrook, which lost to Bradley-Bourbonnais and a team from Indiana, drops out. Marian Catholic leaves as well after losing to St. Patrick and Benet.

Those are two teams that will almost certainly return at some point this season. The Raiders have been missing some guys, although it appears that Aries Hull is now playing.

St. Patrick and Downers Grove North are the two new additions.

The Shamrocks were an easy call after knocking off Marian Catholic and Marist this week. St. Patrick’s losses this season are to Glenbrook North and Nazareth.

Downers Grove North lost its first game of the season to Lake Park and hasn’t lost since.

Bears RG Teven Jenkins exits Eagles game on stretcher with neck injury

Minutes into the Bears’ game against the Eagles, there was a tense scene on the field as right guard Teven Jenkins went down with a neck injury. It was unclear immediately how he got hurt, but Jenkins was put on a stretcher and carted to the locker room.

Jenkins appeared to get hit in the shoulder while blocking on David Montgomery’s run four plays into the game. When he went down, he was lying face down and kicking his feet in reaction to the pain.

The Bears sent in Michael Schofield for Jenkins.

Jenkins has arguably been their best offensive lineman since making the move from tackle to right guard shortly before the season open.

The Bears drafted him in the second round at No. 39 overall to be a left tackle, but a back injury derailed his rookie season and he played just six games. Jenkins had a history of back trouble at Oklahoma State.

Cubs close to bringing back Drew Smyly

Jesse Rogers is reporting that Drew Smyly is on the verge of finalizing a deal with the Cubs

The Chicago Cubs are on the verge of bringing back a key member of last year’s starting rotation. It sounds like a deal is as good as done, but potential terms have yet to be reported. Chicago’s pitching depth appears to be getting a little deeper with Drew Smyly.

Source confirms: Cubs zeroing in on free-agent left-hander Drew Smyly. First: @JesseRogersESPN

With Drew Smyly returning, the Cubs are going to have numerous options when it comes to starting pitchers. It’s been well-documented that starters across the league are beginning to have shorter and shorter outings. Thankfully, the Cubs will have numerous players in their bullpen who can go several innings. That also means that the team should be well covered when it comes to spot starts.

I’d handicap the rotation and its depth looking like:
1. Stro
2. Steele
3. Taillon
4. Smyly
5. Hendricks
6. Wesneski (*will* find a way in)
7. Sampson
8. Thompson
9. Assad
10. Alzolay/Kilian
Need a breakout from one SP to establish a good enough top, but depth is fantastic.

The Cubs’ rotation found great success in the second half of last season. With so many options, it’s difficult to project the Cubs’ rotation. Last season, the Cubs had 18 different players make starts for them.

After signing Dansby Swanson, it’s clear that Cubs are committed to adding major pieces via free agency. Be on the lookout for the team to target corner infielders and catchers as free agency continues.

Breaking: Bears list QB, 2 WRs on inactive list against Eagles

Bears’ inactive list has a lot of offensive players on it

The Chicago Bears added a couple of pass catchers to their active roster Saturday. It hinted at who would be available for Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Bears had several players doubtful or questionable for their Week 15 game. The Bears’ inactive list clarified the team’s plan for the game against the Eagles.

Chase Claypool’s status was known Friday afternoon. He had been ruled out. According to a statement by the Bears Sunday, wide receiver N’Keal Harry and tight end Trevon Wesco will be out against the Eagles. Offensive tackle Larry Borom is out as well.

With Borom out, it’s assumed Alex Leatherwood and Riley Reiff will rotate Sunday. With his limited snap count, Leatherwood did well against the Green Bay Packers in Week 13. But the Bears appear to be easing him into having more playing time for the Bears.

Riley Reiff and Alex Leatherwood will continue to rotate at right tackle on Sunday, Matt Eberflus says.

Bears WR N’Keal Harry out vs. Eagles

The Bears’ already-thin receiving corps got even worse Sunday morning when the team ruled out former first-round pick N’Keal Harry because of a back injury. Harry practiced all week but was ruled questionable for the Eagles game on Friday.

The Bears ruled out Chase Claypool on Friday because of a knee injury suffered against the Packers. Saturday, they promoted receiver Nsimba Webster from the practice squad. Equanimeous St. Brown, Byron Pringle, Dante Pettis and Velus Jones will play against the NFC’s top team.

Cornerback Kindle Vildor will play after being questionable because of an ankle injury. He’ll be part of an upgraded defensive backfield. Safety Jaquan Brisker and cornerback Kyler Gordon, both rookies, missed the Packers game but were cleared from concussion protocol on Monday.

The Bears ruled out tackle Larry Borom (knee), tight end Trevon Wesco (calf), quarterback Tim Boyle, guard Ja’Tyre Carter and cornerback Justin Layne.

Sources: Cubs, Smyly closing in on agreementon December 18, 2022 at 4:46 pm

The Chicago Cubs are closing in on an agreement with left-handed pitcher Drew Smyly, sources familiar with the deal told ESPN on Sunday.

Smyly, 33, made 22 starts last season for Chicago, pitching well in the second half after dealing with an oblique strain in late May. For the season, he was 7-8 with a 3.47 ERA, which included a 0.90 ERA over five stellar starts in August.

The nine-year veteran will rejoin a rotation that includes Marcus Stroman, newcomer Jameson Taillon and youngster Justin Steele. The Cubs also have Keegan Thompson and Adrian Sampson available to start along with holdover Kyle Hendricks, who is recovering from a shoulder ailment.

Smyly, a second-round pick of the Detroit Tigers in 2010, has played for seven teams in his career, including five since 2019. The Cubs had him in the organization in 2018 when he was recovering from Tommy John surgery, but he never pitched for them in the big leagues until last season.

The move is the latest in a series of deals by the Cubs, which include Taillon, shortstop Dansby Swanson and center fielder Cody Bellinger. The Cubs finished third in the National League Central last season at 74-88.

Smyly is 53-47 in his career with a 4.10 ERA in 239 games (156 starts).

Week 15 betting: Why Eagles might overlook Bears; Raiders have edge over Patson December 18, 2022 at 1:22 pm

play

Why Fulghum expects lots of points from the Eagles vs. the Bears (0:38)Tyler Fulghum explains why he is taking the over for the Eagles’ team total against the Bears in Week 15. (0:38)

Betting worlds will collide when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers host the Cincinnati Bengals (-3.5), delivering the league’s most financially rewarding team against the costliest one. This matchup also pits the wise guys against recreational bettors, affectionately known as “Pros vs. Joes”.

Tom Brady and the Bucs have only covered a league-worst three games this season (3-9-1 ATS), while Cincy is at the top with a 10-3 ATS mark, covering 10 of its past 11 games. Yet, the Bucs are drawing sharp money, just as they have done nearly every week this season.

“I still don’t know what I’m missing with Tampa, other than they are old and bad,” SuperBook head oddsmaker Ed Salmons told ESPN, also referencing how the betting market favored the Bucs over the Chiefs in Week 4. “I argued to open KC as a three-point favorite. They bet it to TB -1.5 and the Chiefs won (convincingly).”

The irony is palpable. For nearly two decades, the public raced to the counter to back Tom Brady. However, the 45-year-old has been a profitable fade this season and recreational bettors have turned on their former good luck charm. Reportedly around 80% of wagers on this game are backing Cincinnati.

“It would seem like a walk in the park for the visiting team and that’s where the recreational money is landing,” BetMGM vice president of trading Jason Scott told ESPN. “However, some of the smartest and most successful individuals and syndicates view it through a different lens and are with Brady and the Bucs. BetMGM will be with the pros.”

A handful of pro bettors have insisted to me that Tampa Bay is the only side worth backing. If this matchup occurred a few weeks ago, the Bucs might be favored at home. While I understand the concept of “line value”, I also remember that sharps backed Tampa last week as 3.5-point underdogs to Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers. The Niners rolled, 35-7.

I lean to the Cincy side, but I just cannot pull the trigger. There are better bets out there on the board.

Detroit Lions vs. New York Jets (-1, 43.5)Sunday, 1:05 p.m. ET, MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey

Detroit is back to being the public’s darling, having covered in six straight games. I backed the Lions last week as favorites, but I like the Jets. I would prefer Mike White at quarterback, but I am okay backing Zach Wilson, after waffling a couple days. Truthfully, this is a bet against Jared Goff, who has a 30 QBR in nine career games when the temperature is below 40 degrees. The California product has more interceptions than touchdowns in such games, and now he faces a stout Jets defense. I also lean to the under too.

Pick: Jets -1

Philadelphia Eagles (-8.5, 48.5) at Chicago Bears Sunday, 1 p.m. ET, Soldier Field, Chicago, Illinois

This matchup presents a classic look-ahead spot for Philly, which travels to Dallas next week for a high-profile game that already has seen some trash-talking. I do think there is something to be said about the human element and it would certainly make sense if the Eagles are not entirely focused on the Bears. I lean to the Bears +8.5 for that reason, but I prefer the over. I think Justin Fields will generate enough offense and the Bears defense is fourth worst in efficiency. Seven straight Bears games have gone over for a reason.

Doug Kezirian discusses why Josh McDaniels will be a big factor when it comes to the Raiders’ game vs. the Patriots.

The teacher faces a former pupil and while Bill Belichick is the better coach, I believe Josh McDaniels has the better roster. This New England team has caught a lot of breaks to linger in the playoff picture. Their seven wins have only come against one true starting quarterback (Jared Goff). The other QBs were Mitchell Trubisky, Jacoby Brissett, Colt McCoy and Wilson (twice). The New England defense is solid, but the Raiders offense should be too much for anemic Pats offense to match.

Pick: Raiders -1
