This is the decade of the collaboration and the single. Yes, there are full-length albums coming out, but for the most part, my release radar is full of new singles.
[embedded content]It’s been a while since I’ve heard Chris Cornell’s voice, singing G&R’s “Patience” nevertheless. How much sense does this song make with Chris’s voice at the helm? Gritty, heartfelt, and regretful. It’s absolutely stunning. What a talent, he will forever be missed.
[embedded content]Speaking of covers, how about this Fruit Bats rendition of the Smashing Pumpkins “Today?”
[embedded content]This is new territory for my boy Healy. His big beats have been replaced with a sparse, fingerpicked, arrangement in which he double times his rhyme over the verse. He still does his thing, and I think after a few listens this is going to be a welcome addition to his catalog.
[embedded content]Geographer shines on new single “Alibi,” where he shows his poppy side, trading in the retro for a moment. It’s a really good track, written with and produced by the lead singer of Rooney. Remember them?
[embedded content]The Gorillaz return with what started off as a great song, but kind of lost the vibe once ScHoolboy Q came in. I was loving hearing Damon Albarn croon over the top of this funky, 8-bit gem that is “Pac-Man.” But the rap just stole the whole vibe. Why does he always have to have some random rapper fuck it up? Hey Damon, sometimes, you are enough.
More Murs, and more Maverick, both worth a listen or three, and the return of Maroon 5. “Nobody’s Love” is typical fare for this crew, but it’s also really good. They always come through with that summer hit, don’t they?
[embedded content]The Dirty Heads return to form this week with “Bum Bum,” and the Rolling Stones get new life with Jimmy Page lending a hand on “Scarlet.”
[embedded content]It’s a jam! They definitely get the Led out on this one, but it’s a good combination of both bands.
Finally, I feel like the ‘Tribe right now, cause “I got the jazz!”
[embedded content]This is Eddie Henderson, and his latest single, “Cook’s Bay.” I’ll be cooking out to this one.
