Attend the tale of Sweeney Todd—but at your own risk! Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s musical classic, based on the fictional serial killer who first showed up in a “penny dreadful” called The String of Pearls in 1846, gets an intimate revival with Kokandy Productions in the highly atmospheric basement of the Chopin Theatre (1543 W. Division). Kevin Webb and Caitlin Jackson team up as Sweeney and his partner in crime, Mrs. Lovett. (What’s in those meat pies she makes? Don’t ask!) Derek Van Barham directs and choreographs. The show opens in previews tonight at 7 PM (tickets $25). Those continue through 9/15. After the press opening on 9/16, tickets will be $40 ($30 students and seniors, with a limited number of $15 tickets for “students and artists” at each show). Definition Theatre Company is still in the midst of building out a venue at 6400 S. Cottage Grove, but they’ve also been keeping busy with developing new work and digital offerings. They present a virtual encore at 7 PM tonight of their Amplify screening series of new work by “underrepresented theatre creatives.” The lineup includes pieces by Melda Beaty, Reynaldo Dumas, Tina Fakhrid-Deen, Ahon Gooptu, Walker Lee, Julian Parker, Brianna Yrene Ramirez, and Khameron Townsend-Riley. It’s free to stream, but reservations requested at definitiontheatre.org. The series will remain available for virtual viewing through midnight on 9/11. (KR)
The Music Box Theatre (3733 N. Southport) teams up with the National Museum of Mexican Art tonight for a double feature of films from the late 60s featuring lucha libre wrestlers and female lead roles. In the 1968 feature La mujer murcielago (The Batwoman), wrestlers battle against female Satan worshippers, and the 1967 film Las mujeres panteras (The Panther Women) features a sexy and masked crime fighter saving wrestlers from the hands of a mad scientist. Both classic but rarely seen examples of 60s Mexican action fare were restored from the original negatives by Viviana Garcia-Besne of the Permanencia Voluntaria Archivo Cinematográfico, an archive in Tepoztlán, Mexico. Garcia-Besne’s family originally produced both films and she hosts the evening along with Chicago film programmer Raul Benitez. The program starts at 7:30 PM and advance tickets are available at the Music Box’s website. (SCJ)
