Fear is as or more dangerous than COVID-19
today at 1:43 pm
I discovered this in my “draft” folder. It’s something I wrote in March but never got around to publishing. It seems pertinent now that President Donald Trump is being accused of falsely trying to calm Americans. Seems that Gov. Andrew Cuomo should likewise be accused.
FEAR IS MORE DANGEROUS THAN COVID-19
That’s the view of New York Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo, as he said during this morning’s news conference.
Just to make sure he wasn’t misunderstood, he said, “Misinformation, emotion, fear panic, is truly more dangerous than the virus.” Adding, “Let’s take a deep breath.”
Good for him.
Look around. The rush on water and the fight over toilet paper. The crumbling stock market. Empty stores and laid-off workers. A deep recession or worse on the horizon. Cancelled social, religious, civic and other gatherings. Theaters closed; cruises abandoned.
The costs so far are incalculable. Retired Americans are horrified as they watch their retirement savings in 401Ks disappear. Money set aside by everyone to make that necessary or long-planned purchase vanish.
The coronavirus didn’t do that. We did to ourselves.
Public health experts are virtually setting policy and no one dares challenge them.
Public health “experts” continue to set policy, adding immeasurably to the continuing fear.
